Cisco :: Cat3750x Stack Upgrade From CiscoWorks
Jul 26, 2011
I am trying to use Ciscoworks LMS3.2 with RME 4.3.1. to upgrade many, many Cat3750x stacks we have laying around. The problem I am having is that Ciscoworks downloads the new image to the Stack’s master switch only and not to all switches. When I reload the stack after the download, any switch could become the master. I already set up the priority to always have the same master, but the process is unreliable and more than once I ended up with another switch as a master. In any case if the master is not the switch with the new image, the stack will keep the old image as their running image and the switch with the newer image has problems joining the stack (after a while it downgrades and become stable)I know how to do it manually, but I was hoping Ciscoworks would be able to do this for me. It would make my life much easier.

I have a situation where a specific unit on my network is booting using BOOTP.The unit is connected to a stack of two Cat3750X switches running IOS 12.2(55)SE1. The server and client is on the same VLAN on the same physical switch, so it is purely L2 between the server and client. The BOOTP server is a computer running a specific software connected to the switch. There is no DHCP server on the switch. IP-helper is not configured on the switch.
If I do a monitor-session on the client port I can see the BOOTP request packet enter the switch, however this packet is never flooded out of any ports in the switch, so the BOOTP server never receives the request. I have tested the server and client in a cheap dumb switch and there it is working just fine. Regular DHCP requests are flooded correctly. It apprs the there is something in the clients BOOTP request that is not correct, since the Cisco switch apparently discards the packet.
Are there any BOOTP gurus that can have a look on the attached (Wireshark) BOOTP client request and perhaps determine if it is infact malformed? Why the switch is not flooding the packet. What is the meaning of the BOOTP broadcast flag in a client boot request?

I upgraded CiscoWorks LMS from 3.0 to 3.2 today. Everything worked prior to the upgrade. The upgrade was successful, with no errors, and all services started. check everything and I see no problem. The system creates the file MDCSupportInformation.zip me clean without any content.I add the installation log file; And tell them that after upgrading to 3.2, you carge the following patches:
LMS321-win-CSCtr77570-0.zip,
cm5.2.1-nt-CSCtw88763-1.0.zip,
lms3.2.1-win-CSCts95764-0.zip,
lms3.2.1-win-CSCts82530-0.zip
in that order. He added the logs generated by the LMS services Tomcat and Apache

I was thinking of upgrading the IOS of a number of c3750 stack (roughtly about 50-100 stacks around the country)...I would like to know is this feasible?
My CiscoWork NMS is connected with a low bandwidth (2Mbps) management link. I was thinking if I upgrade via CW2k, then RME will take "ages" to push the IOS to the stack, right? Is this feasbile for 100+ stack of switches?

I'm trying to upgrade the IOS ver on a 3750G stack (2 switches), but the img on the switch is too old.The stack is running IOS c3750-i9-mz.121-19.EA1d.bin, and when I tried to upgrade to a newer version, I tried to go to IOS ver c3750-advipservicesk9-mz.122-35.SE5.bin since I need to enable ssh on the switch, but the switch did not reload.
Here's a prtscreen of the switch ver:

I'm trying to use LMS to upgrade a stack of switches that have 1 or more 3750x's and other 3750's. In Software Distribution, if I choose Distrube to devices, basic, it finds the x switch, which is the master but says the others are not candidates. I don't see a place where I can tell it it is a mixes stack and choose multiple IOS's.

Switch 2 has an interface configured in RSU Standby.Switch 3 has an interface configured in RSU active. The upgrading sequence is : Switch 2, Switch 1, Switch3.The aim of the test is to prove that there is no loss of IP connectivity throught the RSU process.During the RSU process, there are ping between all the computers.
IOS starting version : 15.0-1.SE3
IOS upgrading version (with OVERWRITE) : 15.0-1.SE3 (same version)
1rst step : Switch 2 reboot and come back master but isolated from original stack (switch 1 and 3)
2nd step : Switch 1 reboot, and come back with switch 2 into the upgrading stack.
Issue : at this step :
- Switch 1 put its interface (IP 192.168.5.254) up :
- Switch 3 has not reboot and still has its interface (IP 192.168.5.254) up
=> we have some OSPF adjencies and mac flapping issues : switch 1 and 3 are trying to mount there OSPF adjencies on the same IP. We loss our IP connectivity since step 3 is not over.
3rd step : Switch 3 reboot and come back up in the upgrading stack. The IP connectivity is back, and the RSU process is done.Is that a normal behaviour ?How can we avoid to loose IP connectivity during RSU process ?

IOS upgrade tried on the stack of 2XWS-C3750X-24T-S , Upgrade was tried to support WCCP on the platform. Current version is Cisco IOS Software, C3750E Software (C3750E-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 12.2(58)SE1, Not able find any IP Plus ios in the site ? Only available are IP base and Universal K9 , Tried upgrading to c3750e-universalk9-tar.122-58.SE2.tar by using stack upgrade method as per document [URL]
Upgrade fails with error :
%Error opening flash:update/info (No such file or directory)

Why current ios is not supporting WCCP , I hope it is there in the featureset. ( tried "sdm prefer routing" but no success) Does c3750e-universalk9-tar.122-58.SE2.tar will give me wccp support ? What is the issue with my upgrade and how do I do a successfull upgrade ?

I was just curious about something with upgrading a 2960s stack.
To copy the image to the switches in the stack I use: Switch# archive download-sw tftp://x.x.x.x/filename
Does this also set the image as the boot image or do I still need to issue the boot system flash command?
can I just issue this command on the master switch and reload and the new config will be pushed to the rest of the switches?

I am trying to do ios upgrade on 5 stacked 3750 switches. All the switches have different model number, so i am wondering which image file i should download. As far as i understand all the stacked switches should have the same IOS, i may be wrong. The switches have the following model numbers and SW images;
Switch Ports Model SW Version SW Image
------ ----- ----- ---------- ----------
1 28 WS-C3750G-24PS 12.2(35)SE5 C3750-IPSERVICESK9-M
* 2 28 WS-C3750G-24PS 12.2(35)SE5 C3750-IPSERVICESK9-M
3 52 WS-C3750G-48PS 12.2(35)SE5 C3750-IPSERVICESK9-M
4 30 WS-C3750E-24PD 12.2(35)SE5 C3750E-UNIVERSAL-M
5 30 WS-C3750E-24PD 12.2(35)SE5 C3750E-UNIVERSAL-M
which image file i should use as they all have different model numbers and Cisco provides different image files for each model.

Is it possible to upgrade a c3750-stack one member at a time to avoid downtime? I need to keep L3-functionality up.
If I have one etherchannel from access-switch (2 channel-ports in 3750, in different stack-members), my 3750-stack as a distribution layer switch, and another etherchannel (also spread over multiple stack members) to core, can I upgrade the entire stack without traffic interruption?

applied an iOS update to a stack via tftp. I used the archive Download-sw tftp:// method. I rebooted the stack after complete and it never came back up. I discovered the master switch upgraded but not the member. The member was sitting there with all amber lights on and frozen after the iOS load. The master wouldn't finish boot until I removed the member from the stack. I had a version mismatch and they would not communicate.

3750G-48TS-S (IPBASE Image)
3750G-48TS-S (IPBASE Image)
I want to upgrade their IOSs to k9 images.
I can not dowload Universal Image file from Cisco website because of the expired service contract. I have IPBASE IOS files for all switches,
Can it be a problem to upgrade master switch IOS from Universal to IPBASE image?

I want to run rolling-stack upgrades on several stacks containing Catalyst 3750X-switches. I have done as follows: Configured the redundant uplinks as active and stand-by.Started to upgrade by using archive download-sw /rolling-stack-upgrade /overwrite /reload The upgrade starts as expected BUT switch number 2 in the stack is reloaded BEFORE switch 1 is finnished, the result is of course downtime for the stack. The documentation says something about the command "boot time", but what is this command doing? The default seems to be 7 minutes, it this parameter the time the upgrade-process waits before booting the next switch in the stack? I would expect that switch number 2 is reloaded when switch 1 is up again after reload, and not after an absolute number of minutes, is the rolling-stack-upgrade not working this way ?

I have 2 Catalyst 2960S-switches configured in a stack. The uplink is configured as a cross-stack etherchannel. Now I want to upgrade the stack with a minimum of downtime for the connected hosts. The hosts are connected to the stack via cross-stack etherchannels. So my question is: How can I upgrade the stack and reboot the members with a minimum of downtime? If I use the archive download-sw command with the /reload-option, the stack is reloaded and the result will be downtime for the hosts while th stack is reloading. Is it possible to upgrade the stack and then reboot the members one by one in a controlled manner?

This feature doesn't work as advertised on the Release Notes and other documentation. After 12 hrs of lab work and a tlwo day support call to TAC, they finally came back to me that:
IOS Upgrade works well if you use the command force-reload, without force-reload, it won't work. --"of course with this command the complete stack will go down and the purpose of RSU will not serve"
Then they pointed me to a bug that I could not find in the bug tracker unless I searched by the bug ID number ?? CSCua78897
Unfortunately this bug has a closed status and is not slated to be fixed ?

Are there issues with the auto upgrade feature for 3750X stacks, either historically or currently?
Some people prefer to upgrade switch stacks manually by disconnectiong the stack cables and uprading code on each switch.
I've done the manual procedure in the past and have not tried the auto upgrade (I have the procedure for the auto upgrade).

I have a stack of 4 Cisco Switch 3750 (1 x WS-C3750G-24T, 2 x WS-C3750-48P and 1 x WS-C3750V2-48PS) and I want to do an firmware upgrade of this stack. Actually, all the 4 switches are at the firmware version 12.2(50) SE1 "IPBase" and I want to upgrade them to 12.2(55)SE5 IPBase. According to the release notes, all the switches in my stack are supported.
To upgrade the firmware, I use the command "archive download-sw /imageonly /overwrite tftp://IP_Address/c3750-ipbaselmk9-tar.122-55.SE5.tar" The firmware gets uploaded correctly but then I get the error message "There is insufficient space in flash: to install the required image. Clean up some old images, and try again."
When I do a "show flash", I see that the switch has 5650944 bytes free of 15998976 bytes.
How can i upgrade my switches? Is there an error in my command which I use? Do I need to add an other option?
The problem is, the switches are located in a branch office and there is no direct access to them. Everything must be done remotely.

I've got a recurring them developing across several deployments of Catalyst 3750X series switches, I'm seeing large amount of output drops across multiple ports but there are is no QoS deployed on any of these switches. (standard FiFO). As it happens the ports in question are a member of EtherChannel groups which are connected to ESX Hosts.I've also seen this behaviour also unexplained on another 3750X at a different site, however it's a single port and connects to an Upstream firewall. However in both cases neither switch has any QoS or non-standard configuration, literally a couple of VLAN's and some EtherChannel groups. Here's some output from the case involving the ESX servers.

There are two kinds of time for assinging IPv6 address from DHCP server.Actaully Catalyst 3750X can do this role. however I am not sure about the difference between Valid lifetime and preferred lifetime. In my understanding the valide lifetime is total lifetime for using the assigned IPv6 address but the prefered lifetime when the assinged IPv6 address is expired at the prefered lifetime then the device may generate extended request or something right?

A site that i am responsible for has the following equipment installed:
2 x 3750G Switches configured as a stack using Stackwise - Collapsed Core/Distribution Layer
5 x 2960G Switches as Access Layer switches
WAN connections into the Core/Distribution Layer are all Gigabit Ethernet over Fibre. This is a dedicated CCTV Network with 50 Cameras all streaming video into the Core (decoders connected to access switches)Each 2960G has 2 links to the Core/Distribution 3750G Switches, 1 to each switch - Gigabit.I'm running rapid-pvst on all switches, so spanning tree is blocking one of the ports and effectively halving the 2 gig bandwidth. Next year our customer is going to add in a further 50 - 60 cameras. After monitoring the current loading on the ports in use, we have suggested to the customer that the 2 connections to each should be Ether-channeled together. [code]
First interface takes commands no problem, keep getting the message that etherchannel cannot be configured across different switches in a stack when i try to put the second interface commands on.

We currently have as our stack master a 24 port Non-PoE that we want to replace with a 48 port Non-PoE. The 48 port switch at one time was provisioned as switch 3 in the stack (not the master). Correct me if I am wrong, but theoretically all I should need to do to get this working is to shut off the existing master so it re-elects a master and then provision the 48 port switch as the new switch one and make sure switch 1 has a high priority?
Do I need to write erase the switch that is replacing the current master first?
