Cisco Switching/Routing :: IPv6 DHCP Preferred Lifetime (Cat3750X)

Feb 18, 2013

There are two kinds of time for assinging IPv6 address from DHCP server.Actaully Catalyst 3750X can do this role. however I am not sure about the difference between Valid lifetime and preferred lifetime.In my understanding the valide lifetime is total lifetime for using the assigned IPv6 address but the prefered lifetime when the assinged IPv6 address is expired at the prefered lifetime then the device may generate extended request or something right?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Output Drops On CAT3750x With Multiple Ports

Jan 25, 2013

I've got a recurring them developing across several deployments of Catalyst 3750X series switches, I'm seeing large amount of output drops across multiple ports but there are is no QoS deployed on any of these switches. (standard FiFO). As it happens the ports in question are a member of EtherChannel groups which are connected to ESX Hosts.I've also seen this behaviour also unexplained on another 3750X at a different site, however it's a single port and connects to an Upstream firewall.However in both cases neither switch has any QoS or non-standard configuration, literally a couple of VLAN's and some EtherChannel groups.Here's some output from the case involving the ESX servers.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: BOOTP Client Request Is Not Broadcasted Out Cat3750X Stack

Dec 15, 2011

I have a situation where a specific unit on my network is booting using BOOTP.The unit is connected to a stack of two Cat3750X switches running IOS 12.2(55)SE1. The server and client is on the same VLAN on the same physical switch, so it is purely L2 between the server and client. The BOOTP server is a computer running a specific software connected to the switch. There is no DHCP server on the switch. IP-helper is not configured on the switch.

If I do a monitor-session on the client port I can see the BOOTP request packet enter the switch, however this packet is never flooded out of any ports in the switch, so the BOOTP server never receives the request. I have tested the server and client in a cheap dumb switch and there it is working just fine. Regular DHCP requests are flooded correctly.It apprs the there is something in the clients BOOTP request that is not correct, since the Cisco switch apparently discards the packet.

Are there any BOOTP gurus that can have a look on the attached (Wireshark) BOOTP client request and perhaps determine if it is infact malformed? Why the switch is not flooding the packet. What is the meaning of the BOOTP broadcast flag in a client boot request?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3550 / 2950 DHCP Relay Option To Router Handing Out DHCP

Apr 3, 2012

Have a client wanting to hand out public ip addresses to all clients from a PFSense Firewall terminating the internet connection.

How do I allow the Cisco Switches currently in place, configured with private ip addresses in the 10.10.x.x ranges and Vlans, where the main 3550 layer 3 has defined dhcp scopes for each vlan, to relay dhcp requests from all vlans to the PFSense firewall?

I assume I would take off the currently defined dhcp scopes for the vlans and configure each vlan/switch with the ip helper address and specify the PFSense firewall and that Nat would have to be disabled onthe firewall?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst 2960S IOS 15.0.2 IPv6 Don't Work

Aug 8, 2012

Just I have upgraded some 2960S to IOS 15.0(2)SE from a IOS 15.0(1)SE3 and the catalyst don't switch any IPv6 traffic. Don't work any RA and also don't work any unicast IPv6 traffic from any interface. I can see some references to IPv6 changes in the FHS (First Hop Security) in the Release Notes, but no any reference to changes in the configuration.

The switches don't have any IPv6 specific configuration and the sdm is the default templata. Returning to 15.0(1)SE3 everything work ok.

On Catalyst 2960, and 3560E this IOS version seem to work fine with IPv6.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: IPv6 Filtering / Policing On 2960 Switch?

Jan 3, 2012

Trying to control capacity utilization for guest users connecting to a 2960 switch. No problem for IPv4 users, but IPv6 is giving me fits. What I've found out by trial and error so far implies that there is just enough IPv6 smarts in a WS-C2960-24TT-L running c2960-lanbasek9-mz.150-1.SE to make it impossible to control IPv6 traffic. Blocking IPv6 would be sufficient short term, but MAC filtering on type 0x86DD does not appear to work either. Here are the results I've gotten so far:

What "works":

*  Protocol ipv6 or an IPv6 ACL in a class map.

* Using a class map referencing ipv6 protocol or an ipv6 ACL in a policy map.

* IPv4 inbound filters and policing.

* Blocking of IPv4 traffic by a MAC ACL blocking type 0x0800 (IPv4) - note that the docs explicitly state that MAC filters do NOT filter IP traffic, except for on this box on this release they do.

What does not work:

* Applying a policy map referencing a class map referencing protocol ipv6 or an IPv6 ACL to an interface. The service policy is accepted by the parser, but is not inserted into the running configuration.

* "class-default" in a policy map only matches IPv4 traffic, not all other traffic.

* Blocking of IPv6 traffic by a MAC ACL blocking type 0X86DD. No problem applying the access-group to the interface, it just doesn't do anything.

I am aware that this box is not supposed to support IPv6 other than for multicast, but as implemented, this is a hole an abuser could drive a MAC truck through.

My questions:

Is this situation unique to this particular 2960 switch or SW release (I also tried 12.2(58)SE2) or does it afflict all 2960's running LANbase?

Assuming the answers to the first two question are negative, what is the minimum requirement to get working IPv6 policing in an edge switch?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 Static MAC Address Entry And MS NLB / IPv6

May 23, 2012

I have seen other discussions regarding Static MAC address entries on IPv4, but what of IPv6?We have MS NLB solutions and they are working fine. We have Cisco 6509/6504, Version 12.2(33)SXI5

But then we have a new one for a new ActiveDirectory solution, and on those networks we have implemented IPv6.

How is Static MAC address entries and MS NLB solved in IPv6 (i.e arp ip.ip.ip.ip mac.mac.mac ARPA gi1/1). I can't seem to find much examples or documentation on this? Is it replaced with another function?The reason I ask is twofold.

1. I really want to know

2. The NLB cluster seem to drop IPv6 traffic at even intervals, witch seems to correspond with NLB transition.

Cisco VPN :: 881 Fails After 24 Hours / IKE Key Lifetime

May 28, 2013

We've got a central office (actually quite small) where several IPSec connections connect to. Two of these connections are Cisco 881 routers. One of them works fine, the other craps out after 24 hours (coincidentally also the IKE key lifetime). When I mean "craps out", it means the VPN worked fine from the get go, until 24 hours later. Only a reload will bring back the VPN tunnel. I've verified my PFS and DPD configurations are solid, because these kind of symptoms would most likely occur when these configurations aren't in order.

The two 881 configurations are quite similar. The only differences between the two are some details in the PPPoE configurations and (quite obviously) the IP address space for the two sites. Both operate on the premise of a point to point connection (no multipoint stuff going on here).

Cisco :: Cat3750x Stack Upgrade From CiscoWorks

Jul 26, 2011

I am trying to use Ciscoworks LMS3.2 with RME 4.3.1. to upgrade many, many Cat3750x stacks we have laying  around. The problem I am having is that Ciscoworks downloads the new image to the Stack’s master switch only and not to all switches. When I reload the stack after the download, any switch could become the master. I already set up the priority to always have the same master, but the process is unreliable and more than once I ended up with another switch as a master. In any case if the master is not the switch with the new image, the stack will keep the old image as their running image and the switch with the newer image has problems joining  the stack (after a while it downgrades and become stable)I know how to do it manually, but I was hoping Ciscoworks would be able to do this for me. It would make my life much easier.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: DHCP For PC At G0/1 From G0/0 For 1941

Mar 12, 2013

I have this Cisco 1941 router with two Ethernet ports g0/0 and g0/1. The g0/0 is connected to office LAN with internet access. As my office LAN is DHCP, it will assigned a IP address for g0/0 since this g0/0 is configured as "ip address dhcp". Now my question is that i have a group of 5 pcs, namely PC1, PC2, PC3, PC4 and PC5 that is connected to the switch and one of the ports of this switch is connected to g0/1 of Cisco 1941. Is it possible that let say PC2 and PC3 (both DHCP enabled) could access the internet access from g0/0 and at the same time, the office LAN assigned IP address for PC2 and PC3 automatically?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 - NAT / DHCP

Nov 30, 2011

We are looking to avoid the need to install an additional device in our network as our core 6509s are not being pushed by any stretch.  However, we are having an issue getting the 6509 to assign DHCP addresses and perform NAT.

Most interfaces and V LAN's on the 6509 are using public IPs and have BGP routing at the edge.  We have a trunk up link coming into the 6509 on a ws-6816 card via a SMF GBIC in slot 9, port 2 that feeds a wifi link where we are looking to provide guest access to our network.

We created 2 V LAN s on the switch 20 and 21.  We assigned a private IP and network to the VLAN20 interface and assigned a new public /30 sub net ip to the V LAN 21 interface.  The following configuration was applied which I thought was the required configuration based on how we would typically configure ISR routers for the same services...

ip dhcp excluded-address 10.200.200.1
!
ip dhcp pool WiFi_Pool
network 10.200.200.0 255.255.255.0
default-router 10.200.200.1
dns-server 4.2.2.1 4.2.2.2
[ code]...

What am I missing in this configuration? Note that if I create an access switch port for v LAN 20 on the switch and plug a laptop in directly to the 6509, the laptop is unable to receive a DHCP address.  If I assign the laptop an address in the 10.200.200.0 /24 range manually, I can ping 10.200.200.1 from the laptop, however, the laptop will not get to the internet as it appears to be failing to perform nat.

The automatic connection to the preferred network (with a strong signal) does not occur immediately. When I choose it in the list of preferred networks and click on 'connect' (with the password present of course), a message appears stating that the computer is connecting to the network. However, after some time nothing happens and the message terminates. There is no other information given (e.g. 'the computer failed to connect..."). After up to 15 mins or so, the network connects automatically (not sure if this has anything to do with turning the router off and on, restarting the computer, turning the wireless adaptor off and on....)
