Cisco Firewall :: 5540 / 5510 - Memory Upgrade
Jul 6, 2011
We want to run ASA 8.4.x on an old ASA5540. We need to upgrade its memory to 2 GB with the following memory upgrade: ASA5540-MEM-2GB=
I suspect that we will completely remove the existing 1 GB of memory and replace it with 2 GB. If this is the case, can I use this 1 GB of memory removed from the ASA5540 and put it in a ASA5510 instead of buying a ASA5510-MEM-1GB= for the ASA5510?

i need to upgrade ASA 5540 from 7.1 to 8.4 for secure connect feature of Cisco Jabber Configuration. Support forum guides that, i need to follow upgrade path from 7.1 --> 7.2 --> 8.0 --> 8.2 -->8.4 and also do a memory upgrade from 1GB to 2GB.

I need to use this feature for only three or maximum four users in company then would i really need to do memory upgrade? or can i go with 1GB memory?also how i can get the prices of part number "ASA5540-MEM-2GB=" at cisco.com?

Just upped our external ASA-5540 pair to 8.4(1), and now one of our nat's is busted.
Here's the lowdown:
Our public IP for our IronPorts ends in .167. That IP is natted to a VIP on our ACE, which load balances to the IronPorts.
The outside interface of the ASA uses .162, which has been the pat for all outbound traffic for a few years... except for the subnet that houses the IronPorts. Due to reverse lookup, that subnet uses the .167 IP address for all outbound traffic.
After the code upgrade, the nat won't work. No email sent or received. Nothing but Deny's on the ASA with flags reading either "SYN" or "RST". IE: Apr 27 12:56:11 10.22.151.41 local5.crit %ASA-2-106001: Inbound TCP connection denied from 69.25.174.17/36917 to 207.236.211.167/25 flags SYN on interface outside
If I return the subnet pat back to the outside interface, then inbound traffic works fine, though reverse lookup fails and anyone running a reasonable spam filter won't send to us.

I have two Cisco ASA 5540, these ASA running ver 7.2. and used mainly as VPN gateways. My question is simple, Apart from the extra AnyConnect client functionality and the higher encryption, is there any specific security benefits (related to the VPN use) for upgrading to ver. 8.x ?

I am trying to get experience with 8.4 code on my 5505. I purchased a Cisco 512MB memory upgrade and installed it. It booted up once and I thought I was ok. I then looked down and noticed that all lights were blinking on the front panel and I had no console access.

We have a old Cisco ASA5540 firewall running on firmware version 7.0 and also a Firewall Service Module (FSWM) running on firmware version 2.3.
My question is if I would like to upgrade the Cisco ASA5540 firmware version to 7.1 above and the FWSM firewall version to 3.1 above, any requirement on the memory size or hardware to perform the firmware upgrade activity, do I require to do some memory or hardware module upgrade activty first before the firmware upgrade ?
Any restriction, shortcoming and pre-requites to do before the firmware upgrade activity ?

I need to add memory to my ASA 55xx's (running 8.2(2)), some of which are config'd active/active or active/standby. The docs say that ram must be identical, which makes sense for production. My question is this: can I upgrade the standby units first, make them active, and then upgrade their mate? Or must I schedule downtime to take the pair down for the upgrade?

I upgraded our ASA5540 to 8.4, THEN noted the increased requirements for Memory. I purchased the 2Gig upgrade, but when installing in the Primary unit today, noted that there were 4 slots. Slots 1/3 had 512Mb modules, so I installed the 2 x 1Gig modules in slots 2/4.
The ASA5540 came up clean, and it "sees" the entire 3Gig of memory.
My question: Is this a SUPPORTED configuration? All documentation I have read only mentions 2Gig of memory. Also, If I had FOUR x 1Gig memory modules, would the ASA5540 support the 4Gigs of memory?

I tried last night to upgrade the memory in my old 5510. It's about 5 years old and has the single memory socket. I followed the instruction included in the kit:
Mfr. Part#: ASA5510-MEM-1GB
I did wear an ESD wrist strap (genuine Cisco at that!) and ensured the memory was fully seated, the handles locked in.Upon restarting the ASA, for over 15 minutes, it stayed in mode: Power LED steady, Status LED flashing, other LEDs off. No response to attempts to SSL via Putty. I powered it off, verified the memory was indeed fully seated, and re-installed the original 256 MB module. It powered up normally in less than 5 minutes. Is there anything else to try before returning the memory? Tonight, I can try the same new memoy module and see if it works.

I recently upgraded the flash and the RAM on one of my ASA 5505 lab machines. The flash was upgraded from 128 to 512MB and the RAM was also upgraded from 256 to 512MB. I am using asa845-k8.bin. The firewall boots and runs file until you issue the reload command. The system shuts down but never reloads.

We recently added about 400 users to our network for a total of 1000. Looking at the ASDM we are holding very tight to 75% utilization and we have 256mbs. This is also running IOS 8.2(1). Our firewall recently crashed after a major download was forced through it. This was after only being booted up for about a week. We had reloaded it a week prior after having ran it for about a year without issue. We havent made any changes in the last month other than adding more users to our network.

I want to privatize the outside interfaces of my ASA firewalls however I need a public IP address bound to an Interface to support L2L and client VPN (using the Cisco client software). What I'd like to do is route to the firewall privatized outside interface and have a DMZ interface with a public IP address on it for VPN peering. Ideally this would allow me to build rules on the outside interface limiting communication to the DMZ interface to IPSEC only. Thus VPN tunnels would traverse the outside interface and terminate on the DMZ interface giving me granular control of the peers and protocols allowed to the each the DMZ interface.
Platforms: ASA 5510, 5540, 5550, 5580
Versions: 7.2(4)33, 8.2(2)

We terminated about 25 site-to-site VPN tunnels on the Cisco ASA 5540 (2 GB RAM). It appears that the memory utilization is getting higher when adding the tunnel. We are planing to remove those 25 VPN tunnels out 5540, and soon we will add additional 40 VPN tunnels on it. So it will be total around 65 tunnels, and maybe add couple tunnels per year for the future grow, but about 25 VPN tunnels are using at all the time, the others are just backup purpose, standby only. We are looking for the new network device (router or ASA) to accommodate the needs. Which network device is better to handle VPN tunnel for this infrastructure?

One of my clients has an ASA 5510 running version 7.0(8) and ASDM 5.0(8). My question, to what versions of each software can I update the appliance to? Additionally, must I upgrade incrementally? i.e from 7.0 to 7.1 then to 7.2? I did find this article ,URL,That states you must go from 5.0 to 5.1 to 5.2, but 5.1 and 5.2 do not appear to be on the download page. The earliest release I could find was 6.2. Can I update the ASA version all the way up to v8 and then update ASDM? Also, noob question, updating the software doesn't erase any of the configurations does it? This is a live firewall and downtime for reconfiguration isn't much of an option.

we recently upgraded our ASA 5510 active/standby cluster from ASA Version 8.3.2 to 8.4.1(11). Unfortunately the standby ASA is now crashing a few seconds after the configuration was synchronized from the active ASA.
Also completely disabling HA, bringing the default config to standby ASA again and activating HA afterwards did not work. Also tried through the Wizard provided by ASDM to be sure to have no errors with requirements.
How to solve this without doing a downgrade back to 8.3.2. ?

Upgrading the memory on an 1841. After inserting a 256MB/PC133/SDRAM/DIMM it would not post during the boot, hangs. If i take out the chip it works fine. The on-board memory is 128, so the 256 is the max it would take to a total of 384. According to the documentation this should work. The memory chip is a Transcend chip, basically Samsung.
