Cisco Firewall :: Can't Reload ASA 5505 After Flash And Memory Upgrade
Mar 1, 2013
I recently upgraded the flash and the RAM on one of my ASA 5505 lab machines. The flash was upgraded from 128 to 512MB and the RAM was also upgraded from 256 to 512MB. I am using asa845-k8.bin. The firewall boots and runs file until you issue the reload command. The system shuts down but never reloads.

I am trying to get experience with 8.4 code on my 5505. I purchased a Cisco 512MB memory upgrade and installed it. It booted up once and I thought I was ok. I then looked down and noticed that all lights were blinking on the front panel and I had no console access.

We have a customer that has a ASA 5525-x reporting only 4g flash memory rather than 8g has any 4g version of the 5525 or is the IOS reporting incorrectly the size, as it seems to be embedded on these units as a USB disk internal.

I am needing to upgrade the Flash card on our current ASA from 64mb to a 1GB card to make way from upgrading from 8.0 to 8.4. When i copy all the contents from the 64MB card through a card reader i am not getting the startup-config file copied over. I checked to make sure that all hidden files are shown, but i am not seeing it. I backed up the startup-config from the old 64mb card to a tftp server before switching the cards out. Is their something that i am missing?

I need to add memory to my ASA 55xx's (running 8.2(2)), some of which are config'd active/active or active/standby. The docs say that ram must be identical, which makes sense for production. My question is this: can I upgrade the standby units first, make them active, and then upgrade their mate? Or must I schedule downtime to take the pair down for the upgrade?

I upgraded our ASA5540 to 8.4, THEN noted the increased requirements for Memory. I purchased the 2Gig upgrade, but when installing in the Primary unit today, noted that there were 4 slots. Slots 1/3 had 512Mb modules, so I installed the 2 x 1Gig modules in slots 2/4.
The ASA5540 came up clean, and it "sees" the entire 3Gig of memory.
My question: Is this a SUPPORTED configuration? All documentation I have read only mentions 2Gig of memory. Also, If I had FOUR x 1Gig memory modules, would the ASA5540 support the 4Gigs of memory?

We want to run ASA 8.4.x on an old ASA5540. We need to upgrade its memory to 2 GB with the following memory upgrade: ASA5540-MEM-2GB=
I suspect that we will completely remove the existing 1 GB of memory and replace it with 2 GB. If this is the case, can I use this 1 GB of memory removed from the ASA5540 and put it in a ASA5510 instead of buying a ASA5510-MEM-1GB= for the ASA5510?

I tried last night to upgrade the memory in my old 5510. It's about 5 years old and has the single memory socket. I followed the instruction included in the kit:
Mfr. Part#: ASA5510-MEM-1GB
I did wear an ESD wrist strap (genuine Cisco at that!) and ensured the memory was fully seated, the handles locked in.Upon restarting the ASA, for over 15 minutes, it stayed in mode: Power LED steady, Status LED flashing, other LEDs off. No response to attempts to SSL via Putty. I powered it off, verified the memory was indeed fully seated, and re-installed the original 256 MB module. It powered up normally in less than 5 minutes. Is there anything else to try before returning the memory? Tonight, I can try the same new memoy module and see if it works.

Currently my ASA5510 has a 64MB internal flash. Does the ASA require a higher capacity flash for an IOS upgrade from 7.2(x) to 8.2(x)? The Cisco Release Notes does not state any internal flash requirement, but just wanted to double check.

I need to upgrade the flash memory of the ASA 5520 from 256Mb to 512Mb. As far as I realized the built-in flash memory called system compact flash and there is also an empty slot which it is possible to install a user flash.
What is the difference between user and system compact flash? and for upgrade can I just insert the user compact flash or do I need to upgrade the system compact flash? Where can I find the part number for each type?

Got an ASA 5505 with the standard 256MB memory. I recently upgrade from 8.2.5 to 8.4.4, and converted over the NAT rules. Problem is, I'm now running very low on memory (RAM): [code]
The ASA doesn't do anything too fancy. Just 1 VPN and 4 inside hosts. Is there any easy way to free up memory, or do I just have to bite the bullet and upgrade to 512MB?

I was trying to erase some bad test configs on my 5505 with a write erase, but all VLAN and Ethernet configs remained. I hastily decided to do an erase flash. No I'm stuck at a ROMMON prompt with no image found to boot I'm hoping I don't have to TFTP a factory image. How do I find the images on disk0 and copy them?

if there is a Flash Memory upgrade option for the ACE4710 that they have.He says he needs more memory so that he can have two images on flash at once. From what I can find, there does not seem to be an upgrade option to increase the flash from the 1 Gig that comes with the platform.

I've had occasional issues with 5505 upgrades going south when the boot hangs on the image load due to a corrupt image. I need a way to validate the checksum of the new image after it is copied to flash. Remote upgrades become a real pain when you have to go onside just to delete an image, copy it into flash again, and boot.

I have a cisco 2821 router configured as a CME version 7.1. Now I want to upgrade the IOS to version 15 to get a CME version 8.6 but I faced a problem that the flash of the 2821 is 64MB and the IOS version 15 required flash 128MB. I tried to replace this flash with another 128MB installed on Cisco 2811 router but when I installed the 128MB flash on the 2821 CME the 2821 didn't boot from it.

I read that there are internal and external flash memory in 3725 router that can max up to 128mb. So adding the sizes of internal and external flash memory, will that total to 256mb?
And also is the internal flash of 3725 just the same with its external flash?

I've been having a problem with a brand new SG300-10 switch that I posted about yesterday. I checked the firmware and it was at 1.0.0.27 and the lastest is 1.1.0.73. So I backed up the current firmware and loaded the 1.1.0.73 version and it seem to be CLI based only, with no web GUI.
If so is there an easy way to reload the 1.0.0.27 using the CLI? There is nothing in the CLI docs that I can see unless it's buried.
The release notes for 1.1.0.73 don't say it's CLI only either, maybe something just went wrong but the CLI seems to be functional.

I'd like to see some REAL LIFE comparisons of ASA firewall throughput (a bit like this one for ISR G2 Routers - [URL].
The reason I ask is that I recently upgraded a firewall from an ASA5505 to an ASA5520 on a small network where the only outside connectivity was a single 10meg Internet circuit with an IPSEC VPN (not landed on the firewall but on a router) to another site.
When I swapped out the firewall the users noticed a big improvement. The firewall is not doing anything out of the ordinary - no IPS or VPN, just standard state full inspection.

I have been delaying an upgrade past 8.2.5 because it is stable and I didnt feel like learning a new way of doing NAT because of the way the code was changed. What is forcing me to go down this path is that I need to be able to let protocol 41 pass through the firewall which doesnt work in 8.2.5 and is what is making me look at 8.3 or 8.4
I know that I will have to install a memory upgrade on both my lab 5505's before I can install the upgraded binary. Will be ordering that in the next few days.
Any suggestions on going to 8.3 or 8.4 based on the reason for the upgrade ? I had been told by TAC to stay away from 8.3 but never got a good reason for that. My lab config (i.e. home ASA) is pretty straight forward (no SSL or IPSEC config), so I would hope it would go fairly smooth. I had heard a lot of horror stories early on but wanted to see how things had been going for everyone with the later versions of code.

I have been browsing the forum and the support notes for a couple of hours and haven't found a definitive answer to my question. Our ASA is on the subject versions. I watched a video on YouTube stating that upgrading the ASA is easiest if you upgrade ASDM, then the ASA. Problem is, I don't think I can upgrade ASDM first because I don't see a version that is compatible with ASA 7.2.x and 8.0.x.

1. if i upgrade, did it change any of my present configurations ?
2. is there any name change or property changes for VLAN's or VPN's
3. did it affect the firewall functions
4. If anything goes wrong, can i restore it in to my old state using my previous dump.
