Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5520 Memory Utilization Over 799%
May 2, 2013I was looking at my CISCO ASA 5520 and i found something really strange
ciscoasa/VPN-context# sh mem detail
Used memory: 4259249568 bytes (793%)
------------- ----------------
Total memory: 536870912 bytes (100%)
but when I look at the system context this is what I see
ciscoasa# sh mem
Free memory: 170829000 bytes (32%)
Used memory: 366041912 bytes (68%)
------------- ----------------
Total memory: 536870912 bytes (100%)
As far as I know the ASA is working good.

Oct 3, 2011I have an ASA that is logging the message %ASA-3-321007: system is low on free memory blocks of size 2048. I ran the "show blocks" command and the "Cnt" value for the 2048 blocks is 0. How do I reclaim these blocks and what are they used for?

Jul 6, 2011We want to run ASA 8.4.x on an old ASA5540. We need to upgrade its memory to 2 GB with the following memory upgrade: ASA5540-MEM-2GB=
I suspect that we will completely remove the existing 1 GB of memory and replace it with 2 GB. If this is the case, can I use this 1 GB of memory removed from the ASA5540 and put it in a ASA5510 instead of buying a ASA5510-MEM-1GB= for the ASA5510?

Sep 13, 2012We recently added about 400 users to our network for a total of 1000. Looking at the ASDM we are holding very tight to 75% utilization and we have 256mbs. This is also running IOS 8.2(1). Our firewall recently crashed after a major download was forced through it. This was after only being booted up for about a week. We had reloaded it a week prior after having ran it for about a year without issue. We havent made any changes in the last month other than adding more users to our network.

Feb 13, 2013I'm having a problem with the memory and also trying to create some rules on the CISCO ASA. The version that I got installed was the 8.2.5.33 on a CISCO 5520 with 512 RAM, the memory usage is on 99% used, 1% free and because of that when I'm trying to create a new rule the firewall brings me the next error..So what I did was a downgrade to the version 8.2 (4) 4 and the memory went down a little (82% used, 18% free) but I still got the error when I'm creating an access rule on the device. One thing and I'm not sure if this could affect on the performance are the number of access list and the object groups that are created.
I already open a case with CISCO TAC and they are checking if the problem is with the memory capacity or maybe a memory leak.Also the doubt that I got is with the memory that I got now available should I can create access rules or 82 is still to hig to create a rule or and object group?

Oct 9, 2012I am currently getting a strange error when trying to use and crypto services on our ASA 5520 (8.0.3)Initially I observed that a connected VPN had dropped.Then when I attempted to use ASDM or SSH I was blocked.
In the end I opened telnet as a test and this was successful. Syslog also shows that traffic is passing as normal.The only obvious error I can see when observing various debug traces is this;

Jul 26, 2012We are using the newest release of AD Agent (1.0.0.32.1, built 598). The ASA Firewalls 5520 are having the software release 8.4(3)8 installed.When somebody tries to connect thru the Identity based firewalls from a citrix published desktop environment (PDI) the connection is not possible. Checking the ip-of-user mapping on the firewalls (show user-identity ip-of-user USERNAME) mostly doesn't show the mapping of the USERNAME and the PDI the user is logged in. The user-of-ip mapping of the PDIs IP-address shows mostly other users, which then are used to authenticate the acces thru the firewalls.
What is interesting, that on the AD Agent using "adacfg.exe cache list | find /i "USERNAME"" i can't see the PDIs IP-address neither because it is mapped to another user.Is Citrix Published Desktop environment supported to connect thru Identity based Firewalls? How AD Agent, Domain Controllers and Firewalls are working together? On the firewalls with "show user-identity ad-agent we see, the following:
-Authentication Port: udp/1645
-Accounting Port: udp/1646
-ASA Listening Port: udp/3799
Why Cisco does use 1645 and 1646 and not 1812 and 1813?The Listening Port is used for what purpose? we tried the AD Agent modes full- download and on-demand with the same effect.

Apr 17, 2011I am having ASA 5520 with active/standby configured. Around 2 days ago, the ASA stopped responding & all of my websites stopped working. when i checked the failover status it said that failover is off. I had to manually turn the failover to start my traffic flow.During this time my secondary ASA was not responding. After some time, the primary stopped responding & secondary became active......to solve this i had to make the secondary unit as failover unit primary & the primary unit as failover unit secondary. i did get a log on ASA :-
“(Primary) Disabling Failover” with error message no.105001 which states the below:-
Error Message %PIX|ASA-1-105001: (Primary) Disabling failover.
Explanation In version 7.x and later, this message may indicate the following: failover has been automatically disabled because of a mode mismatch (single or multiple), a license mismatch (encryption or context), or a hardware difference (one unit has an IPS SSM installed, and its peer has a CSC SSM installed).(Primary) can also be listed as (Secondary) for the secondary unit.
Cisco VPN :: 5510 - Internet On Stick No Split-Tunnel With Limited Internal Access?
May 9, 2012Is it possible to configure remote access (IPSEC client) to force all traffic through the tunnel (no split tunnel) yet still limit the internal hosts that can be accessed?
I have been asked to provide remote access (via ASA5510) with the following requirements:
- the client should have unrestricted internet access via the ASA (the source address will appear to be the outside interface of the ASA)
- the client should have access to only two internal hosts (192.168.10.10 and 192.168.44.10)
Is there a way to limit access to those two internal hosts, while still providing secured internet access? The only way I can see is to use an access list on another device (for example our core switch).

Cisco Firewall :: Cannot Get RDP And Email Out Through ASA 5510 5520
Jul 24, 2012I've been trying to switch out our old firewall which is a 5510 for our new 5520, but we keep running into this problem on both devices with almost the exact same configs. Currently I have the 5510 installed, and I cannot get our email server and RDP server to ping out to our internet gateway.
Attached is a sanitized config. From the config you can see the internal address of the email server is 11.2.1.29, external address is 73.13.198.211. RDP server is internal address 11.2.1.33, external 73.13.198.212. Our internet gateway is 73.13.198.209.
From another computer with a 11.2.1.X address I can ping out to the internet gateway. The other two devices drop (I believe) when they hit the firewall.
Static mappings (again from config):

I have a /30 and need to determine if the configuration of x.x.x.121/30 which is my ISP and also the BVI address on the ASA. The inside router address is x.x.x.122/30 same subnet as my ISP will allow me to pass traffic. Management interface works using a different ip address but not able to get the traffic to pass traffic out to the internet thru the ASA
ISP-------->ASA-------->Router
Bottom Line is that I only have one usable address that is being used by the router and the ISP and ASA are using the other. Will this work?

Jun 26, 2010I am using ASA5520 with webvpn for file sharing. But recently we just upgraded the OS that accommodate file shared folder from win2003 R2 32bit to windows server 2008 R2 64bit. Now I have a problem with accessing file share by ASA webvpn, it appears error contacting host, we have tested the file shared of webvpn on the other OS windows 2003 and windows 2008, they are working on these OS except win2008 R2. Current the ASA OS version is 8.0(2). And the windows firewall has been disabed.
