Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5505 - Hairpinning Or Simple ACL / NAT Entry?

I've attached a document showing how this network is designed. A client on a guest vlan behind the ASA, nat'd to one address on the public subnet, needs to be able to get out to the internet, and still come back in for specific services, such as OWA, via the IP which the mail server is nat'd to. The drawing is pretty explanatory. Do I simply need to create a NAT statement and ACL to allow that client out and back in, or do I need to set up hairpinning? I'm working with a Cisco ASA 5505 Version 8.4(4)3.
Note: The drawing has public IP's substituted with 1.1.1.x with final octet being accurate.

I have a client in a workgroup environment. They are a small company with perhaps twenty systems. Their infrastructure consists of a Dell Switch, a Cisco ASA-5505 which hands out the DHCP and a router. And that's that.They have been using an external IP as their DNS Server to get out to the Web. However, they now want to add an internal Linux-based DNS server.In looking through the ASA-5505 today I noticed a field for DNS enteries. Is this where the IP for this new internal DNS Server (in the secondary DNS field) would go?If so, would it be necessary to reboot the ASA-5505 for this change to take effect?

I have created a simple static ip address by using this command:
interface Vlan1
nameif inside
security-level 100

But, no matter what, the I can't ping the static address or access the computer 10.2.1.2 from outside of the asa 5505. I have attempted to ping from inside of the asa 5505 or from another computer. I just does not work.
I also have created several rules that allows icmp traffic.
icmp unreachable rate-limit 1 burst-size 1
icmp permit any echo-reply inside
icmp permit 10.2.1.0 255.255.255.0 inside
icmp permit any echo-reply outside
icmp permit any outside

Here is my environment: DSL Modem - ASA 5505 - switch ,Inside network (192.168.2.0/24)
What I have successfully done:
- Modem online and passing on DHCP requests from the ASA to my ISP (ASA does get an internet address on the outside interface)
- ASA assigning DHCP to internal network
- All internal clients can access the internet.
What I am getting stuck on is getting NAT rules set up for simple port forwarding. What I would like: ANY internet address be able to access a server on the inside network address (192.168.2.x) over tcp/22 . I set up what I believe to be the correct NAT rule and Access Rule, but the packet tracer fails. Here is my config.

I wanted to move to the cisco arena, and having a bugger of a time figuring out simple nat/pat rules combined with access lists. I've been reading Richard Deal's Cisco ASA configuration book, googling the heck out of this simple problem and can't see what I'm missing.
I have an ASA 5505 unlimited security plus license running 8.2(3) and a simple network, 192.168.0.x internal, 192.168.3.x dmz (not even touching that yet!) and outside I have a /29 subnet of addresses, 25 is the gateway, and 26-30 are my addresses.
I have simple dynamic nat set up on the .26 address to nat to 192.168.0.x. All I'm trying to do is port forward a simple tcp port I set for my linux server (192.168.0.2) on the inside, for arguement's sake, it's 2222 (it's not really). My outside vlan 50 is X.X.X.226 255.255.255.248 , can I make a static nat (inside,outside) x.x.x.226 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.255 ?
I tried using (inside,outside) x.x.x.230 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.255 and that didn't work either. Is it not possible to use two external addresses to hit the entire /24 range AND a single server?
My access rule for this nat is permit tcp any 192.168.0.2 eq 2222 (where I'm using 2222 for my ssh port). then I apply that access list to the access group interface "outside".
I thought the outside interface would do a proxy arp (since I do not have the sysopt noproxyarp command) for my 227,228,229, and 230 addresses where .226 is my internal nat for all my internal machines i.e. 192.168.0.1 -> x.x.x.226 . I had this working like a charm before with my fortinet, so I know I have systems listening.

here, am used to the RouterSwitch CLI but been asked to set up an ASA 5505 8.4.Quite simply I am trying to at least test out a static PAT from an external source to an internal server in a test environment and no matter whether I set it up as an auto-nat or a twice-nat whenever I run a packet tracer I end up with the same error. This is the packet-tracer I am running-packet-trace input outside tcp 80.80.80.80 3389 10.240.0.10 3389

Now I have a couple of questions initially. I have made the presumption that packet-tracer does not look at any external devices while running - as in as long as the ports are up it doesn't matter what is on the end of them for testing purposes? Is there anything I am missing?I have this morning wiped the config and have simply set up the adapters, a default route and twice nat and am not sure why I keep getting the error. I am sure it is something very simple and I'm being a massive donut!

I have a requirement to NAT a spare address on the same subnet range as one of the firewall interface - however, because this is not allocated to a physical interface, there is no mac entry in the arp cache. the other end of the link from the firewall is connected to a router which has no idea how to reach this "virtual address" - again because there is no entry in the arp cache I have tried to put a static arp entry into the firewall but this doesn't appear to work either. Should I be using a mac address form a physical interface or can I create a dummy mac for this - If the router can't see the ip address, then users will not be able to target this address - so that the firewall can NAT to the real outside address.I have tried routes to null0 on the router and static arp entries on both devices but the user just times when trying to connect to 10.2.7.11 (nat to 10.2.32.11)

I have set this up on pre 8.3 code and 8.3 code as well. I have the following configured on the ASA, but it is not working and I am not seeing the ASA trying to NAT the VPN pool IP address that the client gets assigned.

I've tried setting up some simple port forwarding on my ASA, where I want to forward one port on the external interface for both UDP and TCP to the same port on an internal server.
It works fine for UDP, but all TCP packets are dropped on the outside interface, even though the configuration for UDP and TCP is basically the same! This is my config:
object network MY_SERVER
host 10.10.1.4
object service TCP_MY_SERVICE

Port count goes up on line 2 (UDP) but never for line 1. I just see the packet denied instead. Same thing happens in the packet tracer, a packet destined for my external interface on that port for UDP is allowed and NAT'd just fine. TCP it gets dropped by the ACL on the outside interface.

I am having peculiar issue in my setup. I recently replaced my ASA 5505 (8.2.1) with ASA 5510 (8.4.3). Everything works fine for a while suddenly I see some of the servers will not be reachable from the LAN all the servers gateway is my switch. If I check on my Dell switch the particular server's arp entry on the connected port is same as ASA physicall MAC. If im reverting to 5505 ASA everything goes smooth without any issue.

I'm not sure if my terminology is correct when using hairpinning but i was wondering if there is any special config needed when you try to access a content rule VIP from a server that's configured as a member of a source group on the same CSS?
So say i have a content rule with a VIP 20.20.20.20 and i also have two servers 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 that are part of a source group with VIP of 20.20.20.21. My problem at the moment is if from the servers 192.168.1.x i try to ping the other VIP 20.20.20.20 that's configured on the same CSS then it doesn't work and ping fails. The same happens with HTTP traffic to the 20.20.20.20 VIP.
I would have thought that the NAT of the source group would happen before the routing so the 192.168.1.x IP's would be natted to 20.20.20.21 and then passed over for routing where the CSS would see that the VIP 20.20.20.20 is local and it would send it on it's way.
I thought it might be ACL related but i increased the verbosity of acl logging and couldn't see anything in the logs.The source group works fine on it's own and from the CSS itself i can ping the 20.20.20.20 VIP fine. It just seems that from the source group members i can't ping the VIP.

I have an asa5520 runing 9.0 that I want to setup for simple NAT, i,e 4.3.2.1/30 on the outside 192.168.1.1/24 on the inside with dynamic NAT outbound. The new IOS has thrown me for a loop.. I have everything working except the NAT. Any SDM screen shot of the Dynamic NAT entry? even if the IP's are different, I can figure it out...
Also, is there a way to make the unused ethernet interfaces gig0/2 and 0/3 into switch ports on the internal net? (or VLAN like you could do on the 5505)?

I'm trying to configure hairpinning on my Cisco 887VA VDSL router, so all LAN users can connect to the server using SMTP port 25 which is also in the same LAN subnet, using external router address, which is assigned to dialer1 interface.Traffic comming in from outside works fine.
External IP: 1.1.1.1/29
PC address connecting to the server: 192.168.101.28
Server address: 192.168.101.200
IOS: 15.1.4M1

I'm running tcpdump on the server on port 25 and... nothing happens. The traffic is not going through.One thing that I've notices in debug ip packet is this line:
s=1.1.1.1 (Vlan1), d=192.168.101.200 (Vlan1), len 52, rcvd local pkt
shouldn't source be internal vlan1 IP - 192.168.101.1?

We were having a discussion of ios firewall vs. asa for smaller clients(less than 50). On using ios firewall(zbf or cbac)and an asa 5505/5510. One of the arguments brought up on using ios firewall on the router is that a router will do an ip sla failover. I have configured a number of isr's for this and i know it works good.

I have a Cisco ASA 5505 in our office. We are currently using Interface 0 for outside and 1 for inside. We only have 1 Vlan in our environment. We have two three switches behind the firewall. Today the uplink to Interface 1, to the firewall, on the switch went bad. I want to setup a second inside interface on the firewall and configure it as failover incase this happens again. I want to attach it to the other switch. Can I do this? If so, what do I need to do? would it only be a passive/standby interface?

setting up an ASA 5505 to be used as a firewall between a BT internet router(BTNet service) and a Cisco 3560 Lan switch. BT have presented me with a cisco 3800 series router with the following details:
Network Address Network Mask BTnet NTE Router LAN Address
There are 2 Gigethernet ports on the back of the router port Ge0/0 is connected to the BT NTE and the status light is flashing green. Int ge0/1 is connected into port int e0/1 of the ASA but i am unable to get any connection.

I'd like to see some REAL LIFE comparisons of ASA firewall throughput (a bit like this one for ISR G2 Routers - [URL].
The reason I ask is that I recently upgraded a firewall from an ASA5505 to an ASA5520 on a small network where the only outside connectivity was a single 10meg Internet circuit with an IPSEC VPN (not landed on the firewall but on a router) to another site.
When I swapped out the firewall the users noticed a big improvement. The firewall is not doing anything out of the ordinary - no IPS or VPN, just standard state full inspection.

I have been working with ASA 5510,20,40,80 but not with 5505 this vlan and its interfaces are quite confusing.Just want to know how it works and its connectivity to Cisco Switch.Do i have to put the interface of the switch in the same vlan as i am creating the interface vlan in firewall ?Now the switch port connecting to this Eth1 interface should also be in the same vlan ? i.e vlan3 ?? or it will be in trunk ? The default configuration shows the eth0 with no access vlan and interface eth1 with access vlan 2... does it mean the eth0 is in vlan1 ? (Nativ Vlan ) ???

I am trying to configure our ASA 5505 so that our users can access our ftp site using [URL] while inside the firewall. Our ftp site is setup so that you can reach it by either browsing to the above url or by browsing to ftp://99.23.119.78 but we are unable to access our ftp site from either route while inside the firewall. We can access our ftp site using the internal ip address of 192.168.1.3.

New to the ASA 5505 8.4 software version, but here is what I'm trying to do:
-Single static public IP: 16.2.3.4
-Need to PAT several ports to three separate servers behind firewall
-One server houses email, pptp server, ftp server and web services: 10.1.20.91
-One server houses drac management (port 445): 10.1.20.92
-One server is the IP phone server using a range of ports: 10.1.20.156
Basically, need to PAT the ports associated with each server to the respective servers behind the ASA 5505. Is anything missing from this config? Do I need to include a global policy for PPTP and SMTP? [code]

I'm integrating a Cisco ASA5505 with a Websense proxy. I have a configuration setup where we have four routers which are used for Internet access. There are two VLAN's - Guest and Private. What I would like to achieve is making the use of available bandwidth by load distribution via GLBP, and filtering users web traffic. Two routers will be used for a GLBP group in one VLAN, and the other two routers will be used for GLBP in another VLAN.The users are connected to a Cisco 2960 switch and are in their respective VLAN's. I'm planning a 802.1q trunk to a Cisco ASA from the 2960 switch, carrying both VLAN's.What I would like to know is if there is a CSC module (or similar) which has Websense installed on it, and if it is possible to setup the ASA5505 in transparent mode to filter the traffic in this way? Hopefully this would allow multiple users to take advantage of the additional bandwidth, and not be restricted by using a traditional proxy setup which where all web traffic would be originating from a single MAC address.

I have an issue with my firewall,each time i configured a trunk port in the firewall and connect a sw 2960S with a trunk port also, all the interfaces in the Firewall go down ( virutal intertaces, inside, outside , dmz) , also another switch 3750 that is connected to another port in the firewall( access port only) it start to a new negotiation of spanning tree.What could be causing this problem? the firewall didnt sedn bdpdu i think the IOS of the firewall its a 8.2

we are planning on connecting a new aquired company to ours soon?We will connect the remote site to the HQ via a D3. I've been told we will need to have a firewall between them and us for a time. I was thinking of terminating the D3 connection at the remote site of 80 users. Can I use the asr as a firewall as well, to protect the HQ from the Remote site - or should I use a seperate appliance?I was thinking of a asa5505 but, am concerned with bandwidth limitations of the box?

I want to configure an ASA 5505 in transparent mode (7.x). Somehow, I got it to work.. but i need some kind of step by step description. I just want to connect it with outside on a route .. inside in my LAN. Its working now with one ASA. But in the Web Interface the Interfaces inside and outside are down.. but its working.

When I upgrade the ios on switches, I just create int vlan1 assign it an ip and subnet, then tftp to my pc that is plugged into the switchport using the download-sw command.
I am not sure how to do this on the asa. Do I just plug my pc into port 0 which the documentation says is mapped to vlan 1 with and ip of 192.168.1.1? I tried this by making my pc's ip 192.168.1.2 but am unable to ping the asa. Do I have to change the security level or anything?

I’ve been using a Cisco ASA 5505 Security Plus bundle for two years now without any problems. My previous Internet Service Provider was routing the external IP I was leasing directly through to my internal network without NAT which my ASA 5505 was working well with. Thus, I had configured my 5505 to provide NAT to my inside network which includes two subnets one for my workstations and internal "private" resources and a DMZ to provide access to my webserver, email server and two domain name servers; but restrict access to my internal; resources. i recently changed my ISP to Verizon FiOS (which is providing me with 25 Mb bandwidth at a fraction of the cost of my old T1) which is set up to provide 5 Static externally facing IP numbers for my email, webserver and name servers;. The problem is the Verizon router doesn’t support my use of the ASA Appliance (at least not the way it is currently configured. Verizon recommend I purchase a business class router and use it in place of the one they provided with my installation. With this in mind, I bought a Cisco RVS4000. I have configured it to use the primary external IP number and have internet access; however, the new router is providing NAT addressing which the ASA is in conflict with (they are both using the same NAT IP range). I'm assuming the ASA 5505 is expecting to have access to the external IP addressed (since that is what it was getting before) and NOT NAT address. How to configure the new router to either provide access to the five static external “real world” IP to my Cisco ASA Firewall. However, I just need to get my ASA 5505 back in the loop and would prefer to do this rather than go back to the Verizon router combined with a low end firewall. So, my questions are: Does the ASA 5505 expect real world External IP numbers? Or can it work with NAT addresses being fed to it from the router? And, if so, how do I configure the access rules and other items which are currently mapping to external numbers?

I am configuring a Cisco ASA 5505 firewall.In the office there is 1 x SBS 2008 server and 5 x PCs, all sat behind a Netgear DGN1000 ADSL router.We want to implement a ASA 5505 for added security.I have configured the internal interface of the Cisco ASA 5505 to be 192.168.0.1 - this is connected to local switch. The client PCs use 192.168.0.1 as their default gateway.I have configured the external ASA 5505 interface to be x.x.x.217. [code]Change the current router status from Router/Firewall/Modem to Modem only (Bridge mode). The ASA 5505 has its outside interface connected into one of the LAN ports of the netgear. The lan port has an IP of 192.168.0.254.
