Cisco Infrastructure :: Asa 5520 ASDM Launcher And Java 7 Update 6
Aug 22, 2012
yesterday I tried to connect to our ASA 5520 using ASDM Launcher, which has alwasy worked before. For some reason ASDM Launcher is no longer working from both my Win XP desktop and Win XP laptop. I can open ASDM through the browser but not the launcher. Both desktop and laptop have Java 7 U 6. I'm not sure if I can back rev my Java.

So (foolishly) I let the software updater delete Java 6 (which only Apple provides), and I installed Java 7 from java.com. Was running ASDM 6.4.9, all I got was the Java 7 splash box. Updated ASDM to 6.4.9-103, same problem.
I can run ASDM in one of my VM's, but it's a pain.

i have an issue with ASA 5510.
I connect to the device - https:/interface
I see the options such as download launcher etc.
But.. whenever I click on this I get stuck
Internet Explorer gives "page not found"
Or at the foot of the page it says "unable to download statup_lr"
Firefox says cannot connect
It is running 6.2.5.53
I can connect if I go to a PC where I have already downloaded the ASDM launcher (from many years ago)
Tried Win 2003, 2008 and Vista, and Windows 7
Tried downgrading to Java 6 r 7. Can I download the launcher from the Cisco website rather than the device? If so where?

I am trying to open up 3 TCP ports in Cisco ASDM Launcher:
16000
16001
8098
And have a Cisco ASA 5505 Router. I need these ports open in order for a software that I have installed on the server to communicate with my local client computers for my business, The software is installed on Windows 2008 Server Standard Edition and was installed with MicrosoftSQL 2005. The software and Microsft SQL 2005 is pretty much installed and just requires this last step in order for the server to be connected to the local computers. In order to resolve this, I have gone to.

I was logged into our ASA 5505 via ASDM-IDM Launcher (everything was working) and when I tried to update a change later on today it was unable to send the request. I tried to ping the device and the request timed out. The internet is still working, the VPN connections are still up. But I cannot connect into it anymore.

Where I can get the most recent install file for the ASDM-IDM Launcher software? I'm currenly running 1.5(41). Somebody mentioned they are at least up to 1.5(50), but he couldn't remember where the install file was. I checked Cisco's software download site, but nothing came up for the Launcher.

The ASA 5510 is working with asa8.3.1 and asdm 6.3.1. ( with factory default config )i ve upgraded to asa8.4.1 and asdm 6.4.1.Now the asdm launcher is frozen after username/password. The asdm upload the software and write that "software update completed".After it the hour glass or sand-glass is visible over the asdm window.

I have an ASA 5510 running ASDM 6.4(9) and Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 8.4(4)1.I am trying to configure for the first time and I am accessing the ASA via its Management Interface.I am successfully able to connect to the device and get to the Cisco ASDM 6.4(9) page. When I try to run the startup wizard, a couple of prompts displays up to the point where the java applet runs and aks me to enter my IP, username and password. As it is a new system, password and username is blank so I enter and I get a message saying "loading software from cache" which later changes to "software Update completed" and then nothing happens.I am running MacOSX 10.7 Lion, Java version 1.6.0_33.I did try and run this on a Windows system and i was able to load the interface.

ASDM access to 5500 using Java was just a frustrating experience. If you manage only one device you may not notice the pain. But if you are managing multiple devices with some device 'forbidden' to update ASA firmware,
I spend few days looking at the issue and came to a conclusion and decided to post to guide all newer VPN admins who will go through the same pain and hopefully we can reduce some combined wasted time.

We are running ASA5520 with version 8.4(2)8 software and ASDM 6.4(5)205.We have noticed the following problems:When having more than 30 IPSec,sessions connected, the log fills up with errors "System is low on free memory blocks of size...", When filtering by "AnyConnect Client" in "Monitoring > VPN > VPN Statistics > Sessions" the values "Bytes Tx / Bytes Rx" column is presented in one line ie. "8450198968129194". Seems to be missing a <cr><lf>,When uploading a new CSD-image (via ASDM) all configuration för GPO, CP, DAP seems to dissapear, though, the config seems ok when looking at a sh run. Also, the newly updated csd-image doesn't show i ASDM.

I have an ASA Firewall 5520 and to add or edit configuration, I use the ASDM interface. For some reason, the admin password that I use is no longer working. The last time I logged on to the firewall was last week and I am the only person with access to it. I used a backup account to login and was able to, but on the menu bar the "Configuration" button is missing.

I have 2 ASA5520's in failover pair. After failing over I cannot run ADSM on the secondary (now active device), I get "unable to launch device manager from [primary address]"
I can ASDM to the primary device (now marked as "standby ready") on the failover address. I can SSH to it also.I CANNOT ASDM to the secondary device (now marked as "active") on the primary address. I CAN SSH to it.
When I run "sh asdm image" I get valid output (asdm image disk0:/asdm-645.bin) on both. However when I run "sh ver" on each it appears ASDM is not running on the secondary device :
Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version xxxx [only]
Compared with :
Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version xxxx
Device Manager Version 6.4(5)
It appears as though ASDM is only running on the primary device (regardless of the fact it is now in standby mode). Is this normal?
I am having to run in a failover condition due to a intermittent hardware fault on the primary unit but require access to the ASDM for monitoring/diag purposes during this condition.

We have a pair of ASA running 8.0 (old) version. The way we create outbound rules is done through ASDM and when we need to open outbound connections to a server in the internet, we create named object with IP address configured manually. But practically , this doesnt work, since the server is a server name which can resolve to multiple addresses. Everytime the server chagnes its IP the ASA rule needs to be updated. Is there a difference if we add rules through CMD prompt as against ASDM where we need to enter IP addresses?

We’ve got lot of ASA appliances (around 30, 5505/5510/5520) and we never had this problem since the use of the new image software ASA 8.4(1) and ASDM 6.4(1). So, my problem is located on two ASA 5520 with active/passive failover with ASA image 8.4(1) and ASDM image 6.4(1).
My problem is that our appliance doesn’t show any logs when an ACL deny a packet, even if when I specify a specific “deny ACL” with a specific logging condition, asdm and ssh buffer logging are empty but the counters of the ACL increment.

I want to setup NAT with ASDM on ASA for a client and I can not make it work. I have several interface:
Inside: 10.97.0.1 / 24
Outside: 10.0.1.70 /24
Interco: 192.168.6.1 /24
Other Sites: 10.26.0.4 /24
All routing in the network is Ok My customer want to access a server @ ip 10.194.70.1 in https on the interface Interco with his nat address as 10.97.0.11 .This server must be accessible with the address 10.97.0.11:443 from interfaces inside, outside and other sites. And source address must be nated with original destination address 10.97.0.11 to be redirected on 10.194.70.1.

I have upgraded my ASA 5520 til version 9.1 with ASDM version 7.1. After the upgrade ASDM shows a lot of IPSEC VPN-sessions in the GUI that i cannot see from the ASA. Right now the GUI says that I have 28 IPSEC-sessions while the output from "show vpn-sessiondb l2l" shows the expected 4 tunnels and the output from "show vpn-sessiopndb remote" shows 0 as expected. (I do not use IPSEC from remote users).

When trying to access the asa (8.0(3)) with asdm the console send follwing error message:
vPif_isVpifNumValid: pifNum out of range!
vPif_getVpif: bad vPifNum(0xa6) from 87EBC81 from 83833B4
Have a strong suspicion that it is a hardware failure (since asdm has worked and have tried to restart the box) can not see any errors with any show commands, but could it be a RAM error .

I am going to be updating the IOS on our Cisco ASA 5520 from verion 7.0(8) to 8.2(5). I am also going to setup AnyConnect. Are there any major changes in the 2 IOS versions that I need to be aware of or will the config work in either version? Also, we are currently using the Cisco VPN Client to connect to our network. Will that still work after the upgrade?

We have a pair of 5510s and a pair of 5520s, each in Active/Standby mode. I'd like to upgrade the ASDM and ASA software on these, but am finding no documentation that advises on how this can be done without physical access to the devices. It so happens I am on site, but we will be deploying these throughout our network and I'd like to be able to perform this type of maintenance without travelling to each site. We utilize CSM and ASDM to manage these for the most part, but are certainly capable of configuring via CLI.
The issue may be my lack understanding of the ASA fundamentals, but I don't really get how the software can be copied to the individual ASAs of the pair so they may be reloaded and upgraded without outage. With a remote SSH connection to the pair, I'm only copying the software to the Active ASA, correct? Or is there a way to get the software to each disk individually from the single SSH connection? I'm not quite sure how to manage the Standby ASA without consoling into it... If I can indeed remotely get the software to each ASA (copying to different disks?? i.e. disk0: and disk1:?), then I also run into an issue updating the boot statement for each of them individually, though to resolve that I suppose I could just remove the old software, but that seems like bad practice before confirming the new software is ok.If there is a simpler way of deploying new code via ASDM or CSM, I'm certainly open to that.

I'm encountering what I think is an issue on logging system on FW ASA 5520 - Asa Version 8.4(2), ASDM version 6.4(5). When I disabled the logging inside a rule from ASDM, or from console with the "log disable" option inside ACL, If I check in ASDM logging real time window I continue to see all the entry related to disabled rules. This is a correct behaviour about ASA logging ? How I can "hide" the entry related to disabled rules (this is what I need for troubleshooting purposes) ?
