Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4507r / Format Of Flash Caused 100% CPU?
Jul 21, 2012
I had an issue today on a 4507r today where when I formatted the compact flash in slot0: (512mb) it caused the CPU to spike to 100% this took about 1.5 hours and did not cause adjacency loss or any thing, but was worrisome. This was a sup IV is this normal and should u let it complete like I did? Also when I copied the os to it from boot flash it caused the same behavior. I have done this a bunch in 6500 sup 720 without this issue?
I recently tried to manually format the flash on a model WS-2960S-48TS-L switch running IOS version 15.0(2)SE. While executing the operation I got the following error - mifs[8]: Failed to create superblock %Error formatting flash (I/O error). As a result the flash is no longer accessible by the switch. I spoke with Cisco and they indicated that a switch reload would remount the flash and make it accessable again but the .bin file would need to be reloaded using the xModem recovery procedure (what a pain). The next IOS version 15.0(2)SE1 will supposedly fix this bug but it has not been released yet. In the meantime if you are running 15.0(2)SE you may want to hold off performing a "format flash:" function on a 2960S.

I just received a 1812 model unit flash memory C class.
I cannot free the space from CF; after format, I receive the same amount of space:
Cisco-1812-II#show flash: 14450688 bytes available (17489920 bytes used) Cisco-1812-II#format flash: Format operation may take a while. Continue? [confirm] Format operation will destroy all data in "flash:". Continue? [confirm]
Trying to copy the system image file from the sup-bootflash to a new 64MB ATA flash card. Yes the software can support the 64MB card.
The ATA flash card was formated successfully, however I cannot copy the system image to it so that it can boot after a power loss. The command I tried was: console(enabled) copy sup-bootflash: slot0:
The source filename was typed in as shown in the Show Verison command. The result was: Error opening slot0: no such device.I suspect that I am missing something obvious as I am new to Cisco Switches.
We are experiencing continuing high CPU issues on our 6500 (generally 80+% most times).

I have a 3750 running 12.2(55) and when I configure BGP I only get the standard AS number choice of 1-65535, but my provider is supplying a 4-byte AS number which is six digits and it gets rejected at the prompt on the 3750. Does that mean no support on 3750
I have 3725 router with internal CF and external slot for CF. I tried upgrading and ended up deleting the iOS version on the internal flash, and can not now put the iOS back!! I turned it off.... so there was no active iOS..
I have tried formatting the CF card on an 1841 but the 3725 won't read it. It is obviously stuck at ROMMON
What is the correct way to format a CF card so my 3725 will read it and I can get an iOS back on it!!
correlates the older IOS format naming compared with the newer? I have an older catalyst 3550 that might need an IOS upgrade due to us starting to implement dot1x. The reason that I say this is that some of the commands in the dot1x config guide, such as aaa accounting dot1x, are not valid on this platform. The current IOS is c3550-i5q3l2-mz.121-8.EA1c but the newer format is the ipbase, ipservices, etc. format. There is a newer ios but how do I convert from one to the other? I think I need to research the IOS to see if the new commands are there as well as I want to make sure there are no gotchas from a hardware standpoint if I upgrade.

I have a 4507R-E chassis with Supervisor IV running IOS 12.2(50)SG. I am trying to configure "auto qos voip trust" on some of the uplink ports. When I try to configure it on a port that is in a channel group, I get the error "AutoQoS Error: AutoQoS can not be configured on member port(s) of a port-channel". I have also tried configuring it on the channel interface, but it is not an available command under the channel interface. Is there a way to do auto qos on the channel interfaces or their member ports or does it have to be configured manually?

I received an replacement supervisor from Cisco to swap out the failed standby supervisor. I wanted to check if I can pull out the failed supervisor supervisor and insert the replacement supervisor while the switch is still on. In other words, is it hot swappable? Also, will this operation cause interruption of switching inside the 4507R switch?
We are planning for the office move and I need to estimate how much power we need to run a fully populated Cat4507R switch. The chassis include 2 Sups, one 6-port fiber line card, two 48-port Gig and two 48-port FastEthernet line cards. The switch also has redundant power supply (4200ACV 1400W). According to Cisco Power Calculator [URL], I need 49.5 amp 110-120V circuit. It seems to be too much higher than real world. How many 20amp circuit we would need when all the ports are fully utilized?
how to upgrade firmware on 4507 6L-E Sup. There is only 1 Sup on the switch. is there any special requirement to update the firmware when switch not running on redundancy mode?

I have a bootflash in 4507R with the size of 60MB. I upgraded the ios from cat4500-ipbasek9-mz.122-37.SG1.bin (12.8MB Size) to cat4500-entservices-mz.122-37.SG1.bin (13.8 MB SIZE) and deleted the previous IOS.But previous IOS is still getting shown in sh bootflash: command. Furthermore, dir bootflash: commands shows there is only one IOS , which is running. How I can free the space from bootflash , as I again have to upgrade the another new IOS ( of 16MB), which I tried through solarwinds tftp and couldn't upload successfully because of its limitation. Now, If I try to upload the new IOS through FTP, it gives me memory space error. How I can free the space captured by old IOS and also how I can delete the 3rd unknown entry of IOS (shown below output of commands)?
We have a Cisco 4507R switch with sup V. This switch fan tray has partial problem .No light in fan tray. We got another fan tray. Can any one tells me is it hot swappable?
What procedure should I flow without any interruption our live network?
Is there some kind of trick to getting the fastethernet 0 management port to come up? My adjacent switch is up/up, but fe0 is down/down. I dont' see how this could be possible. I am getting all my info remotely, but I am pretty sure it's wired up correctly.
Configuring a 4507R classic chassis with redundant Sup 6L-E? TAC told me the Supervisor 6LE was only supported on the 4507R+E or 4507R-E chassis but I have found in Cisco documentation several places that indicate that the Sup 6LE is supported in the classic chassis.
I'm unable to pass the required vlans networks to my firewall I have different vlans configured for each floor of the building, All these floors have Nortel switches which are connected to the core switch through fiber link.
I have a Cisco 4507R-E core switch. Config for the core switch below: what else has to be done in order to pass the vlans to my firewalls.
pinging the SVI on the core and or pinging on the core to other devices resulted in MAJOR latencies, packet loss due to the cpu usage, etc.... no other network operations were affected, i could communicate with the rest of the network, and under 1-2ms latencies. i noticed it due to my opsview server flagging the core as down (SNMP OID's wouldnt return a value)
it lasted the whole time i was multicasting, i kept a close eye on it. i highly considered canceling my job, but everything ran smooth.when i looked at the cpu sorted history i saw 2 processes, IP Input, and cat4k mgmnt hipri
We're trying to configure our Cisco 4507 (Supervisor Engine IV) to allow a new Dell server with a pair of Broadcom 5708 GigE NIC's to aggregate its NIC's to give us a 2gbps link to the switch.
So far we seem to have got the team and LACP up and enabled, but the adaptor that the Broadcom Admin Util creates for the team is only showing a 1gbps connection where I would have expected it to show as 2gbps.
The individual NICs show as connected at 1gbps. We're not Cisco experts so are struggling on how to get the 2 NICs to aggregate.
On the server side we've done nothing other than create a team using 802.3ad LINk Aggregation using LACP.
This is what I think the relevent output from "sho conf" is, more available if needed.

If i replace a card of the same type in the same slot will I lose the configuration for that card or does it live in the backplane of the device? Is there any special command I need to run to replace the card or can i shutdown the 4507r-e and just swap out the blade?
Why rpr is the only available redundancy mode option available to me. I'm running a 4507R+E with twin SUP7-E's.

I need to add another SUP engine on Cat 4507R switch, with a new one. I have old SUP engine running in this switch. Sometime this switch is reloaded without any reason. So we want to add another sup engine for redundancy. What is the procedure to do this & also how much outage time would it cause? Which sup engine will be run as primary and which one should be redundancy?

I'm in the process of upgrading my 4507R core to a new 4507R-E. The old switch has Sup IV engines (WS-X4515) running IOS 12.2(40)SG and the new switch has Sup 6L-E engines running 15.1(2)SG. I'm trying to "move" my configuration from the old switch to the new. Below shows the commands configured in the old switch. I'm trying to determine how to implement the same configuration on the new switch since these commands are no longer available.
we have 2 Supervisor IV modules in our 4507, i want to upgrade the IOS as its still on 12.2 and i am going to upgrade it to the latest.
my first question is, if i update the IOS on the bootflash will it replicate to the secondarybootflash?
secondly, can i force a reboot of the secondary supervisor, then the primary after the secondary is up? i'm just trying to minimise downtime and get a plan going.
is there a difference in 12 vs 15 that would impact my current config that i should be aware of?
I am trying to do policy on the interfaces of my switch WS-4507R, below the configuration I used to shap the traffic to 1 Mbps. However, when I tested it the traffic excceded the 1 Mbps.
class-map match-all 1MB match access-group name 1MB ! policy-map 1MB class 1MB
[code]...
how I can restrict my bandwidth on the interface on 1 Mbps.
last day i went to one client for the installation of C(WS-C4507R+E)
current ios :cat4500e-ipbase-mz.122-53.SG2.bin
there is only one sup engine installed and redundant slot is empty.
I installed one ethernet module in the slot 6 and it get detected working fine. I also want to install one fiber module but that module is only supported by 12.2 54 sg or later ios version.so i need an ios upgrade.
For the ios upgrade I decide to do it through svi interface For that i igive an ip address to vlan 1 (192.168.1.2) and plug cable in gigabit 6/1 and added that port into valn 1.
my laptop's ip is 192.168.1.1 @ this point i faced a rare problem the PING IS NOT WORKING.(switch is directly connected to my laptop).
Then i create another VLAN (2) and add that port into vlan 2 still ping is not getting.last thing i tried is that making that gigabit port into a routed port and result is same.
