Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6513 - Password Recovery With Dual Supervisors?
Sep 7, 2012
I have 2 x 6513 each with dual supervisor 720, and need to recover the enable password, is there a better method than removing one supervisor, disabling redundancy and performing password recovery on the single active supervisor module , before re-inserting the second supervisor and re-enabling SSO/RPR on the still active module.

One of the two supervisors in an IOS 6509-E did not come back up after a power outage. The failed supervisor in slot 5 was replaced and it booted successfully. However, the supervisor in slot 5 only booted up to a "Cold" state. I did notice the Hw version of the replacement module in slot 5 is 4.9 while the Hw version in the supervisor module in slot 6 is 4.8. What command do I need to issue to bring the supervisor module in slot 5 from "Cold" to "Hot"? [code]

I have a supervisor blade, (VS-S720-10G-3C), in a 6513 that is faulty and needs replaced. Do I need to replace the IOS on the new supervisor blade to make sure it is the same as the IOS image that is on the Active supervisor module, or will it synchronize automatically?
In the synchronization process, the active supervisor engine checks the standby supervisor engine run-time image to make sure that it matches its own run-time image. The active supervisor engine checks three conditions:
#
•If it needs to copy its boot image to the standby supervisor engine
#
•If the standby supervisor engine bootstring needs to be changed
#
•If the standby supervisor engine needs to be reset
I was reading the above documentation that mentioned the active supervisor should copy the image if it detects a newly installed standby supervisor blade with a different image, is this correct or was it referring to synchronizing the configuration file?

I am trying to use the password recovery for an NME-16 and am having trouble. I am unable to look at my files in dir to so I can rename them. I can get the switch to bypass the config and come with the switch: prompt, but can not do anything more. I am trying the password recovery guide, but cant get to the text file to rename. I am using a 2811 router.

I can see the console on the router. (Using the USB console connected to a Macintosh.) I was configuring the router though this console connection, and I created a new user (priv level 15) and removed the default 'cisco' user. So I'm stuck at the username/password login prompt now.
I decided to do the password recovery procedure (via the cisco doc I found etc), but I cannot break into ROMMON during the boot process. I'm not sure if that's because my Mac isn't sending the break, or what.
The pw recovery doc says you can "remove flash" if you can't break into the boot sequence. However, I cannot find any instructions on how to remove the flash. I've opened the router, and I see one very small daughter card on the main board that I think is the flash, but I'm not about to start arbitrarly prying parts off.

i just wanna know if it's possible to perform a router password recovery using the reload command and then issue the break sequence instead of doing an off/on on the power switch. i often find in the docs to use the latter.also, is there a way to retain the startup-config on a router when we re-enable the password recovery functionality (no service password-recovery). i've just tried this on one of our 877 and when i hit the break sequence, it went back to factory default setting.

I need to break into a 2901 router to recover the passwords. Cisco's methodology for password recovery on 2900 seriews routerssays to remove the compact flash card and reboot into RMON. There is no external compact flash card on a 2901. Is there acompact flash card inside the box? Or can you use the older method of rebooting and then hitting ctl+break to boot into RMON?

I have a major problem with our core 2801 router. In summary it appears that a staff member disabled password recovery, deleted the IOS and rebooted. Net result is no Rommon and no IOS on the flash. I've read that the Conf-Reg will be reset if I remove the NVRAM but I cannot identify it on the board. If I can get to Rommon I can recover. Currently I don't have Flash reader to restore to flash.

I enabled the "no service password-recovery" command on my C2960 switch. All seems to work as discribed. Only issue I have is --- which show command is used to reveal if the password-recovery feature is enabled of disabled as the command doesn't show up in the running config after you enable it ?
NOTE: The command does show up in the C2960 switch in config t mode (unlike the IOS router 2800 series), but doesn't show up in the running-config after you enable or disable it.
On the 2800 series routers (latest IOS) in config t mode the command does not show up but if you type "no service passowrd-recovery" the command function correctly and it does list it in the running configuration.

we have a chassis 6513-E and a module WS-X6748-GE-TX, I'd like to know if could I put this module in any slot, since the documentation from Cisco says that any slot from a chassis 6500-E Series can support this module. And then in the documentation of WS-X6748-GE-TX says that this module is not compatible in the slots 1-8 of the 6513 chassis, only from 9th to 13th slots, in those slots from the 6513-E we already have 4x WS-X6748-GE-TX, and we'd like to know if could we put the module in the rest of the slots. The 6513, and 6513-E is kind of confusing.

I have a customer that has a Catalyst 6509 with two Supervisor VSS capable and my Sales team sell another 6509 with just one Supervisor VSS capable. Simple question: Will VSS configuration will recognize that I have three Supervisors? It will work as QUAD-SUP solution or as a normal VSS solution?

I received an replacement supervisor from Cisco to swap out the failed standby supervisor. I wanted to check if I can pull out the failed supervisor supervisor and insert the replacement supervisor while the switch is still on. In other words, is it hot swappable? Also, will this operation cause interruption of switching inside the 4507R switch?

Today we have 2 VSS, and are about to buy another two 6500 chassies to bulid a new VSS. Our currens chassies have supervisor 720, and the new one will probably have SUP2T
We have a network design that allowes us to run on a single chassie per VSS if we have hardware failure. This means that in a really worst case scenario we need to move around hardware to have 3 system up and running (that would mean multiple failures on all systems... so really really worst case scenario )
So here is my first question. Can I run a VSS with different supervisors in the chassies? Second question: If I want to upgrade a VSS from SUP720 to SUP2T, cna I run 2 supervisors per chassie (quad supervisor VSS) where one supervisor is SUP720 and one is SUP2T?

I understand that my questions seems to be rather strange cos supervisors is rather old (Sup1A especially). But i am interested in understanding what puprpose were in production SUP32. I cant find out enough differencies between Sup1A with MSFC2 and Sup32 to understand what reasons lead to deploying new sup in none fabric supervisor series.
Both supervisors have same perfomance - 15Mpps and have limitation on backplane bandwith of 32 Gbps (cos both use swithing bus), both supervisors equipped with MSFC2 and etc. Differencies i found:
SUP 32 have 10Gbe ports support (but this seems to be doubtful enhancement - with it perfomance GE ports seems to be more appropriate technology isnt it?) SUP1A equipped with PFC, SUP32 with PFC3BSUP32 deploys CEF (what is benefit of CEF if perfomance same?)

I am having a hard time getting tunnel fail over working. My setup is illustrated below:
I derive my default route on the border routers. The 6513 peers with the 7206's using BGP to get the default route from each ISP into the core. On the core I use BGP weighting to get my primary default to point to ISP1. So far so good. When I look at my core I see to defaults with ISP1 preferred.
Each ASA has an IP Sec tunnel to the head end site configured (Not shown). The head end site has a crypto map entry with ISP1 and ISP2 defined (in that order) using the "set peer" command.
Fail over works great if an ISP drops the connection or my 7206 or ASA fails, but... While testing fail over I had an issue where both tunnels would be active and there were issues with traffic between sites. I could not determine the root cause. I can only guess that some traffic was going out one tunnel and when trying to come back across the other tunnel was dropped from the firewall because there was no connection built for it. After reading I found that in order to use multiple peers in the "set peer" statement, I needed to configure my head end as "originate-only". I have not done this yet as I have concerns. If the head end site is "originate-only" and the tunnel, for whatever reason drops, I cannot wait for interesting traffic at the head end site bound for this site to bring up the tunnel as most of the traffic originates at this site.
I have been reading about IKE keep alives and DPD but that doesn't sound like it will re-initiate the tunnel. Is this correct? If so I'm looking for a way to make this work.

I would like to make a design with 4 Nexus 5596UP. 2 of them equipped with Layer 3 Expansion Module so they can serve as core layer and the other 2 Nexus used as Layer 2 for aggregation server layer. The 2 Nexus in the core layer will run HSRP and will peer with ISP via BGP for Internet connection The 2 Nexus in the aggregation layer will be configured as layer 2 device and have FEX and switches connected to them. What I am ensure of is how the vpc and port-channel configuration should look like between the 4 nexus. What I was thinking is to run vpc between the 2 Nexus in the aggregation layer and between the 2 Nexus in the core layer. Than I was thinking of connecting each Nexus in the aggragtion layer to both Nexus in the core layer using port-channel and vice-versa.

Well I have been back and forth on this a while now...I have a 6513E chassis that is getting prepped for prod. I am currently testing sso functionality and I can only get it to work using the following images on both Sup Cards.
s72033-adventerprise_wan-mz.122-33.SXI5.bin
If I try any other image, smaller or bigger in size...it forces my Sup card in mod 8 to recycle " proxy request from peer ". I have tried K9 images and non K9 images. Here is an output from sh redundancy.
Redundant System Information : Available system up time = 4 minutes Switch overs system experienced = 0 Standby failures = 0 Last switchover reason = none [code]...

I have a 6513 with redundant sup 720-3B's that I cannot get onto. In short, one of the power supplies failed, it still passes traffic but I can't console or ssh to the box. Other than the two sup 720's, I have a 4 port 10gig card, a 16 port GBIC Card and an IDS module. I have tried removing the 10Gig, IDS and one of the sup's but still don't get anything on the console. I have rebooted the entire chassis and don't get anything on my console while booting. I have tried changing the speed of my terminal to every setting available incase someone has changed it at some stage but to no avail. I have tried swapping sup's, using only one at a time in the chassis but not getting anything. Is there anything else I can try to get onto this chassis? The power supply is a 3000w with a 32amp input. The failed power supply had tripped a switch, when i brought it back up, the power supply came out but the output failed LED is on. My #questions are, is there anything else I can do to try get onto the console, and is the power supply goosed when the RED LED is lit? I have reseated the power supply also but the same result.

My question is regarding VSS configuration on Cisco 6513 switches. My understanding is that the hardware and software configuration on the devices must be exactly the same for the VSS to function correctly. Do the Bootstrap versions also have to be identical?
The production switch is running Bootstrap Version 12.2(17r)SX5, while the new switch is running Bootstrap Version 12.2(17r)SX7.
