Cisco Switching/Routing :: Password Recovery For 6509 Switch?
May 16, 2010I have one CISCO 6509 Switch in my store. I tired to login in that switch but couldnt.. Once it's booted it's asking me: rd: . Find the attachment. I recover the password by changing confreg value but that also failed.

Dec 23, 2012I just received a Catalyst 2960-C (WS-C2960C-8TC-L R) switch and I am unable to sign into its web GUI in order to configure it. I've tried both the Cisco Network Assistant and Internet Explorer and I am unable to log in either way. The documentation provided by Cisco states that the default password is simply cisco and that a username is unnecessary. Needless to say, it doesn't work. I've also Googled for other default passwords (such as cisco-cisco as the username-password), none of which worked either. I've also tried resetting the switch back to its factory default a few times.

Mar 12, 2012To configure my Cisco, I use the console cable but as I have no serial port on my PC, I use a USB to serial cable which I plug the console. I had lost this USB cable -> serial but I found another one. So I started to configure my Cisco by copying from an existing config. I found out that a prior the converter is defective and copy the wrong config.
I had copied the enable secret password and it badly copied! No luck, I made a copy run start. Therefore more accessible to Cisco! When I start the Cisco, I see what activated "the Mechanism password-recovery is enabled". so I followed the procedure Cisco
I go flash_init: OK but when I type "load_helper" Unknown command it say to me .... I'm stuck!

Jan 25, 2012I am testing 2960 24 S with storm-control and Errdisable Port timer interval 60s , connected HUB on fa0/17 to make traffic / loop.After Strom Control detection the interface goes down thats ok after 60s they will try to recover the interface and going up although the loop is still there.For my understanding if the interface detect still a loop on that interface they will disable the port again for 60s and will check again. Jan 1, 2012I can see the console on the router. (Using the USB console connected to a Macintosh.) I was configuring the router though this console connection, and I created a new user (priv level 15) and removed the default 'cisco' user. So I'm stuck at the username/password login prompt now.
I decided to do the password recovery procedure (via the cisco doc I found etc), but I cannot break into ROMMON during the boot process. I'm not sure if that's because my Mac isn't sending the break, or what.
The pw recovery doc says you can "remove flash" if you can't break into the boot sequence. However, I cannot find any instructions on how to remove the flash. I've opened the router, and I see one very small daughter card on the main board that I think is the flash, but I'm not about to start arbitrarly prying parts off.

Apr 7, 2012i just wanna know if it's possible to perform a router password recovery using the reload command and then issue the break sequence instead of doing an off/on on the power switch. i often find in the docs to use the latter.also, is there a way to retain the startup-config on a router when we re-enable the password recovery functionality (no service password-recovery). i've just tried this on one of our 877 and when i hit the break sequence, it went back to factory default setting.

Feb 18, 2013I need to break into a 2901 router to recover the passwords. Cisco's methodology for password recovery on 2900 seriews routerssays to remove the compact flash card and reboot into RMON. There is no external compact flash card on a 2901. Is there acompact flash card inside the box? Or can you use the older method of rebooting and then hitting ctl+break to boot into RMON?

Oct 5, 2011I have a major problem with our core 2801 router. In summary it appears that a staff member disabled password recovery, deleted the IOS and rebooted. Net result is no Rommon and no IOS on the flash. I've read that the Conf-Reg will be reset if I remove the NVRAM but I cannot identify it on the board. If I can get to Rommon I can recover. Currently I don't have Flash reader to restore to flash.

Feb 9, 2012I enabled the "no service password-recovery" command on my C2960 switch. All seems to work as discribed. Only issue I have is --- which show command is used to reveal if the password-recovery feature is enabled of disabled as the command doesn't show up in the running config after you enable it ?
NOTE: The command does show up in the C2960 switch in config t mode (unlike the IOS router 2800 series), but doesn't show up in the running-config after you enable or disable it.
On the 2800 series routers (latest IOS) in config t mode the command does not show up but if you type "no service passowrd-recovery" the command function correctly and it does list it in the running configuration.

I've tried to do that... it gives me the "switch:" prompt, so I think I've interrupted the boot procedure successfully, but, what do I do next?I've successfully done recoveries on Catalyst 2950s, 3550s & 3560s, but the procedure for this one, if I'm reading the link above right, sounds like it's completely different.

Dec 7, 2012I have a cisco 2960 switch. Trying to recover a password. Have tried several different ways to recover it. I have let the switch load completely, then pressing the mode button waiting for the light to turn amber and then green. I also have held the mode button down, plugged the switch back in until the mode light turns from amber to green. Either way I will type flash_init. Then when I type load_helper I get a invalid command response. The command load_helper isn't even listed.

May 21, 2013I have a Cisco SG 300-20 as the core switch, layer 3. It is 192.168.4.6 on VLAN1 and 192.168.5.1 for VLAN2 (VOIP). All the ports are set in trunk mode. DHCP relay is setup on this switch.
The phones connected into a layer 2, Catalyst 2960-S switch. All ports are set in trunk mode. Default gateway on it is set to 192.168.5.1.
DHCP for both VLANs is provided by a Windows Server 2008 R2 server (the relay IP 192.168.4.15).
There is also an ASA 5510 in the mix which is 192.168.4.1. It has a route added to it for the 192.168.5.0 network to go to the SG 300 (192.168.5.1).
Just the two switches can ping each other on the 192.168.5.x network when I "add vlan 2" to the trunk port that is connected between the SG 300 and the 2960. The phones don't get DHCP on the 2960 switch. And I cannot ping 192.168.5.x from the ASA or anything else on the 192.168.4.x network.
After a bit of reading on intra-vlan routing for the SG 300 switch, I am thinking the SG 300 has to be the "center" of things so I need to make it 192.168.4.1 to be the gateway for both VLANs and change the ASA to 192.168.4.2 for VLAN1, etc. And I really can't do asymmetric routing with this switch.

Feb 5, 2013I have a statck of 4 2960s switches, with POE powered access points on 2 of them. All of the access points appear to be functioning normally. For some reason, on 3 interfaces connected to access points, I get the following when issuing show interfaces status:
Gi3/0/9 connected: T 7 a-full a-1000 10/100/1000BaseTX

My question is regarding the "T" in the status field. I can't find any documentation on this.

I have tried to reset the switch to factory defaults and it still doesn't work. The switch is currently connected to a 3560G and has been assigned an IP. If I try to access it from Network assistant it shows as unmanaged and I get prompted for a username and password.The switch is connected to another new 2960-S via a FlowStack module.
