Cisco Switching/Routing :: SG300 - Session Starts With Two SYN ACK Packets?

Apr 20, 2012

I am having trouble with my Cisco SG300 switch big time. I have two servers with IP addresses 10.17.0.11 and 10.17.0.29 sitting on the same switch which is a Cisco SG300. I initiate a file transfer from 10.17.0.11 to 10.17.0.29. I could see lots of Dup Acks and retransmissions which means something is wrong in the connection. Further, I could see the session initiation a bit bizarre. I could see two SYN packets sent from 10.17.0.11 to 10.17.0.29 and also two SYN ACK packets returned by 10.17.0.29. The switch forms part of a network but since both the servers are sitting on the same switch I suppose the rest of the network doesn't come into play when one server talks to the other.

See also the number of Dup Acks and retransmissions. The two switch ports connecting the servers have speed and duplex set to auto negotiate, flow control is enabled. What could cause this sort of problem?Could it be any setting on the switch or the servers' NICs?Or could it be a bad switch that causes this?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: CAT6500 / Duplicate Multicast Packets On A Span Session Port?

Apr 17, 2013

If I monitor a trunkport on the rootbridge in both directions  I get Duplicate Multicast Packets on the perticular VLAN.   The first guess is, that this is worked as designed and not a IOS Bug (Platform CAT6500 SUP720 IOS 12.2(33)SXI9 ) Until know I only found an old Cisco press link from 2002 with this subject.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6513 Monitor Session Source Vlan And Lost Packets At Destination

Feb 20, 2012

We have 2 6513 switches with SUP720/PFC3A and various POE modules and a 6748-GE-TX  facing our servers.  Additionally, we have a 4Gbps portchannel trunk interconnecting the switches.    We have approximately 300 Nortel IP 1140e phones in use between the two switches.For the purpose of call recording, we've attempted to mirror the voice vlan using various approaches and have been met with limited success.  We mirrored the VLAN using tx, rx, and both.  When using both we appear to get duplicate packets at the destination interface.We seem to lose packets completely going in one direction or another for a given call. Packets are lost before they get to the destination interface?

Cisco Switches :: SG300-20 - Radius Idle And Session Timeout Does Not Work

Jan 25, 2012

I have an SG300-20 here for testing (firmware: 1.1.2.0, boot version: 1.0.0.4, language version: 1.1.1.6 English). Everything seems to work on it, except, that if I choose Radius authentication by mac address only, then the switch does not honor the Idle-Timeout and Session-Timeout attributes from the Radius server (freeradius).

The setup is the following: I have a no name access point plugged in to switch port gi1. The port gi1 is set up for Radius authentication by mac address only. The access point itself is authenticated, no problem with that. If I connect through the access point by (say) a mobile phone, it is authenticated, no problem. The radius server does send the Idle-Timeout and Session-Timeout attributes, I checked it by running "freeradius -X", both are set to 30 seconds. Then I turn off the wireless card in my mobile phone and check the dot1x users by "show dot1x users". My mobile phone's mac address remains there for 5-10 minutes, so the Idle-Timeout and Session-Timeout  does not work.

Another way I could resolv this problem is by explicitely asking the switch to reauthenticate the user. Unfortunately there is no CLI command to do just that, I can do however a reauthentication on a port using "dot1x re-authenticate gi1" (for example). But it does not work as it is expected: the switch uses the stored mac-address to reauthenticate the user, so nothing changes on the port (unless something changes in the radius server). I think it should work like the following: remove the authenticated user from the port, and whenever that mac address makes some network traffic, then reauthenticate as if it were a completely new connection. BTW: it would work for me also if I could just remove an authenticated user from a port, but I did not find a command to do that.

As a last resort I can simply shutdown the port, bring it up again ("shutdown" and "no shutdown" in the interface config), then all users are removed from the port and they all mush reauthenticate. But it causes a network outage for a couple of seconds for all users on that port, on a busy access point it is quite disturbing, and it is not an elegant way to do this.

So my actual question is: is there a way to remove an authenticated user either automatically (Idle-Timeout and Session-Timeout) or manually from this switch?

I enclose the relevant part of the running config.

interface range gi1-2
dot1x host-mode multi-sessions
exit
vlan database
vlan 2-4
exit

[code]....

Cisco Switches :: SG300 Is Dropping Packets?

Apr 10, 2012

We have a customer who we sent to Cisco to replace some aging Dell switches. They purchased 5 SG300-52’s for 2 different networks. Their production LAN has 2 “live” switches and 1 spare. The 2nd, a development LAN has 1 switch and 1 spare. Their primary production SG300-52 has GE1-8 VLAN’d off as VLAN2 for public IPs. The untrusted (WAN) interfaces of 2 x ASA-5510’s, 1 x ASA-5505, and 2 x RV082 v2’s are connected to GE2-6. GE1 is the uplink to the co-location center’s Cisco switches. GE7 & 8 are spare ports. Each SG and device port is hard coded for 100/Full.

One of the ASA-5510’s and the ASA-5505 maintain a site-to-site VPN (the development LAN used to be in a different facility hence the VPN). Recently the developers have stated the performance is horrible. I noticed ping traffic loss from PCs on the dev side to servers on the production side in the order of 20-30%. I assumed it was a VPN issue so I opened a ticket with Enterprise TAC (all the ASAs and the SGs have either SmartNet or extended support contracts). TAC determined the problem happened even if you ping from inside the ASA to the untrusted side of the other ASA thus eliminating the VPN as the culprit.

The 2nd ASA-5510 has the AIP module and was not even live until this weekend. Turning it up and giving it a basic config returned the same results. #ping x.x.x.x repeat 100 will drop 20-40 packets. I have no security enabled on the SGs and even tried using the spare SG300-52 this weekend in place of their primary with the same result. I’m to the point of returning one of the Dell switches to production, but this cannot be a good sign. I’m also a bit frustrated that I’ve yet to figure out how to get Cisco Enterprise to speak with Cisco Small Business on this. The customer has over $10k invested in Cisco equipment and Cisco isn’t jumping in to figure this out.

The latest rep wants a packet capture from the SG300’s VLAN2 but there are no PCs there to do this with and the manual doesn’t even talk about doing this. How we can do this as well as get the 2 divisions working together to fix this? BTW, the RV082’s exhibit the SAME exact problem. I can ping from ANY device on VLAN2 to any other device and drop packets. Copying a simple 1MB file over the VPN can take minutes where it should take 1 second. I can reproduce this for 24/7.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6513 Span Session Limit?

Jul 12, 2012

I have a need to capture some traffic but my core 6513's are already using the limit of 2 span sessions. I can't edit any of the sessions either because I want to source traffic from vlans and you can only do one or the other. Is using a VACL with 'switchport capture' on the destination interface an option ? E.g. I want to source traffic from vlan 10,20,30,40 and send the all to interface Gi10/10 ? Is there any caveats ? I dont need to be too granular with the ACL's but just capture all traffic in those vlans.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 - Dot1x Authentication Session Id Not Clearing

Nov 2, 2011

I am seeing the following behavior when computers move from one switch to another with dot1x ONLY when there is a 'stupid' switch in between.

computer --------  'stupid' switch ------- 2960

dot1x is working fine but when the computer is disconnected, the port still shows the authentication session id so when the computer connects to another port or switch, authentication succeeds but traffic doesn't pass. While I'm almost certain that the culprit is the 'stupid' switch that doesn't clear the session id, I have already tried another one and the problem remains so I'm actually just asking for a confirmation that all these 'stupid' switches present this behavior and if there is a workaround in this case.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560Gs / 4900Ms / Starting SSH Session From Console Port?

Dec 29, 2011

I console into switch 1 (or router, it doesn't matter) and everything is fine.  From that session I SSH to switch 2 (or router).  The session on the second device has a noticable delay when I type.Next I SSH to switch 1, then SSH to switch 2 from that session.  Everything works fine.Finally, I console to switch 1, and telnet to switch 2.  There is no delay.So it appears the delay only occurs when I open an SSH session while consoled into a device.  It didn't matter what switch 1 and switch 2 were - I had 3560Gs, 4900Ms and a 3845 router.  There's no special configuration on the console or vty ports - when I do a "show line console" and "show line vty 0" the output is basically the same.

Any issues with pasting scripts into a Nexus 7K and having the scripts get all messed up even though they are logically correct?  I've had this issue over the years with IOS devices and the console port and tweaking some of the line feed/character delays fixes the issue but that was always with the console port and not a telnet session.  Telnet has always worked flawlessly on IOS.

I've determined that if I tweak my line feed delay up to 1000ms it seems to work fine, but it just doesn't make sense to me that I have to do that.I have a customer with 3300 ACL lines that need to be put into a Nexus as part of a migration from 6500 to Nexus.  And yes, I've already tried to convice them to offload these VLANs behind an ASA!

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Inter-VLAN Routing Using 877 And SG300-10 Switch

Feb 5, 2012

I recently set up a small photography business and am trying to get a Cisco 877 and Cisco SG300-10 switch to talk to each other.

What I want is for the Cisco 877 to handle the internet and the SG300-10 to handle the local network,

I have set up 2 vlans in trunk mode on the switch and want vlan2 to manage local traffic and vlan3 to handle the internet.

I have got the 877 connecting to the internet what I dont have, traffic going to vlan2 on the switch from the 877

Look at the running configs for the switch and the router and tell me how to get the vlan on the router to pass traffic to the switch. In a nutshell I am inserting the internet into the switch but am not sure how to progress. I have the c870-advipservicesk9 image file on the router.

interface  gi3

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Ignored And Overrun Packets On 7204VXR?

Feb 21, 2012

I am seeing packets being ignored on GigabitEthernet0/0, but can't find any reason what the reason can be for that. So far calculated that about 3% of the traffic is being ignored. Cisco Switching/Routing :: C3750 - Packets Lost

Nov 21, 2011

I have a stack of 2 C3750-switches (WS-C3750G-24TS-1U) with IPBASE-firmware (12.2(52)SE).

When I ping to a machine (in this case a virtual one), the replies are always received on the port where the machine is connected, but on the port-channel connecting to the stack of the 'pinging device' the reply comes only for certain initiators, and not for all.

Setting:
Gi1/0/6: Device/Server I want to connect too ; defined as access port
Gi1/0/25 + Gi2/0/25, as Port-Channel 1: The location of the devices I connect (read as: the uplink to the stack of the PC's), defined for Dot1Q-trunking

Monitoring setup: Source ports: Both: Gi 1/0/6, Po1 (or Po1 replaced by both interfaces)

For the machines which can ping the server I see 2 echo (ping) requests, followed by 2 echo (ping) replies ... So once seen on the Po1, and once seen on the interface Gi1/0/6.

However for other machines, the 2nd reply is missing ; which must be caused by the dropping of these packets in the switch.  At least, I my opinion this must be the reason... But I can't see any (change of) output drops at int Po1, nor at Gi1/0/6.  The CPU doesn't seem to have high usage, and even then, I don't think the error would be constant, as it's always failing for some PC's, and never for others... (at least for a certain time, a few hours it can be constant, the problem dissapears from time to time).

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 Monitoring Session Experiencing A Large Packet Loss

Aug 16, 2012

I have been searching the message boards and wasn't having much luck. I am running some monitoring sessions on my 6509 and on the VLAN I am monitoring, I am experiencing a really large packet loss.  If we hook up a laptop to the destination port and run wireshark we are seeing between 80% and 90% packet loss.  I dont see the packet loss on the show port command, but I do on the show int vlan command.

The config is as follows:

Session 2
---------
Type                   : Local Session
Source VLANs           :
RX Only            : 500

[Code].....

I was doing some reading on Egress vs Ingress and I am wondering if the Egress SPAN replication state could be causing the packet loss that we are seeing or does the ingress & learn command override that?

Host -----> 3750 (classic) running IPSERVICES stack ----> 3550 router -----> VPN 3005 Concentrator.

IP routing is disabled on the 3750 (it's acting solely as a switch) IP routing is enabled with an EIGRP process running on the 3550 router that has the network for the 3005 broadcasting.

I can ping the vpn 3005 concentrator from a telnet session in the 3550 but not from the 3750.I can ping between the 3750 and the 3550 vlan management interfaces.  Visually speaking it's like this

3550 ------> VPN 3005 Concentrator [Success!!!!]
3750 ------> 3550 --xxxx--> VPN 3005 Concentrator [Timeout....]

I know this because I tracerout to the 3005 from the 3750 and it resolved the default gateway configured for the 3550 properly but then started timing out.

The 3750 is trunked to the 3550.

3750 is vtp client mode
3550 is vtp server mode

I'm wondering if there's a layer 2 issue involved here as it is a VTP domain and maybe it's not returning properly.
