Cisco VPN :: ASA 5510 - Allow AnyConnect Clients Access To Only Few Servers

Mar 19, 2012

We have 30 remote workers which we have recently acquired which are being set up with the AnyConnect client to connect to our head end ASA 5510. For security purposes, we have to allow them access to only 3 of our local internal servers, all on our 10.10.X.X/16 subnet. The remotes are being issued a 10.10.50.X/24 address via DHCP on the ASA when connecting. I thought this would be as simple as creating an access list but have not had any luck doing so. In addition, we need to allow them full access to servers in a datacenter connected to our same head end ASA via a site-to-site VPN while they are connected to us using AnyConnect.

Cisco VPN :: 5510 VPN Clients Can't Access DMZ Network

Mar 22, 2012

The title says VPN clients cannot access DMZ network, but that is not exactly the problem, the situation is this, a group of users are using an actual 10.x network where they have their servers and pretty much everything. The users must be relocated into a new network, the 172.16.x.  In a point in time they will not have to use 10.x anymore, but meanwhile, they need access to that network.

I have an ASA 5510 as default gateway for the new network (172.16.x.x), one interface e0/0 connected to the outside (internet), interface e0/1 to the inside and other interface connected to the actual 10.x (which I call DMZ), so basically I am using the ASA as a bridge using NAT to grant access to the users in the network 172.16.x to the resources in the 10.x network while the migration is completed.

All the users must use the path to the internet thru the ASA using the NAT overload to the outside interface and I put in place a NAT policy to 10.x to allow access to the 10.x network only when the internal users 172.16.x try to reach that path and so far, everything is working just fine for the internal users. Now for some reason, when I do VPN, the VPN clients cannot reach the 10.x network, even when they are supposed to be in the internal network (because they are doing VPN right?) .

I have enabled split tunneling with NAT exempt the 172.16 network and I am not sure if that is causing the problem, because when I trace from my PC the 172.16.16.1 address using the VPN I get the proper route path, but when I try to reach 10.x, my PC is using its default gateway and not the VPN gateway which has a route to 10.x.

I’m not even sure if what I am trying to do is possible, I want VPN users to be able to access a 10.x network using NAT overload with the Interface of the ASA plugged to the 10.x network, just like the internal users are doing right now.

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5510 - Clients Cannot Access Remote Site

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5510 - AnyConnect Users Unable To Access Remote Subnet

Jun 9, 2013

I have a weird problem which I have already submitted a TAC ticket about. When users authenticate through AnyConnect into our HQ ASA 5510 they grab an address from 172.16.254.x. What we have been noticing intermittently is that when logged into our network through the client they are unable to access their resources at one of our remote offices which is connected over l2l to the HQ ASA. This problem just started randomly a week ago and we have been working with Cisco trying to create a solution.

My quick fix is logging into a device at the remote office which is trying to be accessed and pinging the gateway of the virtual subnet for AnyConnect users. When I ping 172.16.254.1 it goes through after a few dropped icmp packets and then the issue is resolved for about 8 hours or so.

Cisco WAN :: ASA 5510 - Configuring Router To Access Two Servers With Same Name

Jan 25, 2012

I have a old server that has custom apps developed by a bankrupt company that we can't replace yet. We are being tasked with upgrading the Operating System and security patches, while preserving the existing live server. I was able to accomplish this by virtualizing it, then cloning the virtual machine. Where I got stuck was, the custom app requires a specific host name. So, I got the idea to have the two servers live on different sides of the firewall until the test platform is accepted and the old live one can be retired.

My problem is that I have no experience with configuring a real firewall like this asa5510.

Servers are:
CM1 live server
CM2 test platform
ADS Active Directory and File and Print

[code]....

I've started to carefully poke around in the Cisco ASDM-IDM, but haven't figured out how to access the DMZ from the outside (so far just testing with http as I don't have my certificate to setup https just yet). Am I missing something to get through to the DMZ from the WAN side?

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5510 - AnyConnect Users Cannot Access Remote Office Over Site-to-site

Jul 15, 2012

we have two ASA 5510s one in 8.4(4) and one in 8.2(5) in a site-to-site VPN setup. All internal traffic is working smoothly.Site/Subnet A: 192.160.0.0 - local (8.4(4)) Site/Subnet B: 192.260.0.0 - remote (8.2(5)) VPN Users: 192.160.40.0 - assigned by ASA When you VPN into the network, all traffic hits Site A, and everything on subnet A is accessible.

Site B however, is completely inaccessible for VPN users. All machines on subnet B, the firewall itself, etc... is not reachable by ping or otherwise. There are also some weird NAT rules that I am not happy with that were created after I upgraded Site A ASA to 8.4

Site A internal: 192.160.x.x     External: 55.55.555.201(main)/202(mail)
Site B (over site-to-site) is 192.260.x.x     External: 66.66.666.54(all)

I pretty much just have the basic NAT rules for VPN, Email, Internet and the site-to-site.What do I need to add for the VPN to be able to access the site-to-site network?

Here is my NAT config:

nat (inside,Outside) source static DOMAIN_LOCAL DOMAIN_LOCAL destination static VPN_Network VPN_Network no-proxy-arp route-lookup
nat (inside,Outside) source static DOMAIN_LOCAL DOMAIN_LOCAL destination static DOMAIN_REMOTE DOMAIN_REMOTE no-proxy-arp route-lookup

object network DMZ_Network
nat (DMZ,Outside) dynamic interface
object network DOMAIN_LOCAL

Cisco VPN :: Some AnyConnect Clients Cannot Connect To ASA 5505

Jul 28, 2011

I have an ASA 5505 that has had a working configuration with several AnyConnect clients using dual authentication for weeks now. My normal process for adding new users has been to configure the user in both authentication databases and the onboard certificate authority, have the user connect to the outside IP of our firewall with IE, download the P12 cert after entering their OTP and then connecting once the cert's imported to download AnyConnect.

I had to add a new user a couple days ago and curiously IE (8) on their computer could not connect to the outside interface of our firewall, as if the laptop had no internet connectivity. I could telnet to port 443 from a command-line, and could even hit it with Firefox (which I ended up doing to download the P12 cert...). I can hit other SSL-enabled and standard websites from IE as well as Firefox. In addition, because AnyConnect seems to rely on the same mechanism to connect as IE does, AnyConnect can't connect either.

I then tested using a previously working laptop fully configured with AnyConnect and a certificate and now it can't connect. There are other previously working laptops that still work, which only makes the issue more clouded.

In watching the logs on the firewall, when one of these non-working computers attempts to connect they hit the firewall, a connection is opened and the SSL handshake is started, but it's never finished and the connection is torn down. Working computers complete the handshake as expected and a tunnel is opened.

I've checked IE forums for this issue and none of the fixes found therein seem to apply or work. Since this issue seems to only affect IE and AnyConnect's ability to connect to my firewall I have to assume the issue is there.

The database replcation has been preformed.A series of 10 clients connects wirelessly and they are all  successful.  ACS server 1 is the primary and ACS server 2 is the backup.   We verified that the 10 users authenticated to the primary ACS. My time out to reauth is 30 minutes on the WiSM. 10 minutes into the test we took down the Primary server.  This should have had no impact on the clients. 5 minutes later the clients lost thier authentication and were dropped from the network. They were able to reconnect by shutting down thier wireless client and reconnecting. The authentications were seen on the Backup ACS server.on a test of falling back to the primary  the same thing happened again to the clients.

Cisco VPN :: 5510 Anyconnect / VPN Does Not Stay Connected

Apr 23, 2012

I have a PC at home which is dedicated to one specific task, and need it to be connected to our company VPN at all times. This PC gets accessed by another remote worker (RDP), through the VPN.

This works fine with the PC at my home office connecting via the Anyconnect client... for a few days, then mysteriously disconnects and doesnt automatically reconnect, with the following Anyconnect error;

"The vpn connection to the secure gateway was disrupted and could not be automatically re-established. A new connection is necessary, which requires re-authentication".I have to manually reconnect and re-enter the password, after which it connects fine.

I have looked on the central ASA5510 (which all clients connect to) and set the idle timeout to unlimited for the appropriate AnyConnect profile and group policy, I cant seem to find any other settings to allow it to stay 'always on' from the client.

I am wondering (but am not sure if this is the problem) if it is perhaps because I am on a normal home broadband connection, which uses a dynamic IP, not static. My ISP (Sky) cannot provide a static IP for my public interface..

Cisco VPN :: 5510 / AnyConnect VPN / AD Credential Request?

Feb 20, 2011

I have a problem with my AnyConnect clients connecting to an AD network via a 5510. Anyconnect VPN clients provide AD plus a one time passcode to authenticate to the 5510. This works fine apart from 3 things:

1. Once the VPN session has been established the user is further prompted for AD credentials when accessing an AD share for the first time. Once they provide the credentials the share can be accessed. Should the AD credentials not be passed through when the VPN connection is established? Or is this by design? What makes me think it's not be design is the fact that this could be related to problem 2.

2. Group Policy Update (windows gpupdate) fails. This again suggests to me that the full client/server relationship is not fully in tact.

3. In order to get Outlook to connect to exchange I've had to change Outlooks security settings from Negotiate (which would naturally choose Keberors), to NTLM. Not sure if this is related or not.

Note: DNS is functioning with out any problems

Maybe the first 2 issues are by design, but I thought the whole idea behind the AnyConnect VPN was that the remote machine would function as if connected to the LAN?
