I've setup the vpn on my Windows Server 2008 R2 box, I now need to do the firewall part - whats the easiest way of doing this as I can see there is a VPN Wizard on the PIX, or can I just open up the ports on the firewall?
View 6 RepliesI planned for my customer to replace his old LMS 4.0.1 server under Windows 2003 by a new server under Windows 2008 R2.Customer wants also to set a new LMS name and IP address for the new server under Windows 2008 R2 and keep both servers on the network.I'm wondering what could be the best procedure to do that migration.Can I used backup / restore procedure in that case ?If yes, what file must I modify to adapt the new LMS configuration to new hostname and IP Address ?

PPTP
Maximum Strength Encryption
EAP-MSCHAP-v2 Authentication
Now I find out that MSCHAPv2 authentication has been broken and is no longer considered secure (even by Microsoft), so I want to change the protocol I'm using to make it secure.
However, I've spent 3 hours now researching this and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use a better protocol on my Windows Server 2012 home server. I've tried setting up PEAP authentication (still PPTP) a la Microsoft's recommendation document, but it requires a certificate. I've created a self-signed certificate but it seems I can't issue certificates (via this method) without being a member of a domain, so I'm stuck. I can't even get started with L2TP since I can't find the option for it.
My question is this: Is there a way to setup a secure VPN server using Windows Server 2012 without a domain? If so, how do I do this?

I'm asking because we're purchasing a new server soon and I want to know if the included backup is going to be good enough. Will be backing up server state as well as data to tape and possibly an off site server (server 2003) if I get my way.
I know the best thing one should do is install an ISA server and an Active Directory Domain Controller on separate servers. But for some reason, I want to configure my Windows Server 2003 as an ISA server as well as an Active Directory Domain Controller. What can happen to my server making it run improperly. For example, my ISA server will function mainly as a Firewall, I wonder if all the rules I create in ISA server determine what I mean it should work or I have to consider any affection from Active Directory DC to those rules?I have to ask this question because I've already installed both ISA and AD DC on my Windows Server 2003, already created an Allow. All rule (just for testing connection) in ISA server but I can't ping from all the clients to my server, all the clients can ping each other and the server itself can ping to all clients. I just think that may be the affection from AD DC to my AllowAll rule in ISA server.
I successfully created some rules that worked greatly as they should work but when I hadn't installed AD DC yet (just installed ISA), however right after installing AD DC, it still worked well (this made me think that AD DC didn't affect to how ISA works). Then I configured a little related to DNS server, and maybe something I don't remember exactly and now I can't ping from my client PC to my server. My network is virtualized using VMware 8 workstation and GNS3, at first there is no need of GNS3 because I just want to test my internal network (some clients connected to the internal interface of ISA server). Depending on VMware that I can't be sure if it is some fault of VMware or any other thing but my configuration on the servers.
Does WCS 5.0 run on Windows 2008 Server. Does it run on a 32 or 64-bit OS? The WCS datasheet does specify that it can be easily installed on VMware Systems. Does it mean it can be virtualized.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy friend and I bought Acer Aspire 5741's about 9 months ago and neither of us has had any problems until now. My friend went to connect to the internet via wireless router yesterday to find that there was limited connectivity (no internet access). We assumed it was a router issue and I gave her a number of things to check but all seemed ok with it. I went to her house to look at it today and when I ran the connection troubleshooter got "windows can't communicate with.......... (DNS server)". I connected my laptop via her router and everything was fine. I brought her laptop back to my house and tried to connect to the internet via my router and got exactly the same 'DNS' message - my laptop again connected without any problem.
I have re-booted the routers, laptops, network adapters etc and also checked the wireless adapter settings on both laptops, which appear to be the same. I have re-set the TCP/IP stack and have also tried ipconfig /release and /renew - none of which seems to have made any difference. The results of ipconfig/all are:-

I have done the following:
Changed workgroup name to same as the rest of the terminals.Changed computer name to same as my previous computer in the network.Previous computer read only chosen username (+ password) when accessing.This new computer reads both computernamechosen username (+ password) when trying to access.
I suspect that username is not approved due to "double-name" ?
I have a XP home SP3 as a server. My wired pc's all can see and connect to the server. I am now trying to add the wireless laptop running 7 Home. I can see my wired 7 Ultimate in the network window. I cannot see my server running XP.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am looking to add remote sites that will authenticate with the Windows Server using VPN via Cisco rv042 routers in a gateway to gateway setup.My main concern is the placement of the server to the router and what would be considered best practice.In my mind, option 1 seems to be what I want - however, this would mean disconnecting the WAN feed to the server (my ip is static and tied into the MAC address of the server). While option 2 doesn't look right to me, it would leave the existing configurations in place which would minimize my downtime (I think)

Check if the DCRServer process is running.And after some troubleshooting I found that the LMS is not creating the CMF database and the other databases.
1. I have downloaded the installation file from Cisco website twice, so I do not think it is the file that is corrupted, also it is only evaluation license.
2. I have met all the prerequisites and requirement as in the documentation guides, but maybe there is something still wrong.

I have an ASA5510 connected to a computer running Windows 7 (the NTP Server) on its "inside" interface.Using the ASDM, I have configured the ASA5510 to use the Windows 7 as its NTP server (my architecture forces me to use a local machine as an NTP server):
-IP address: 192.0.99.1 (the ASA5510 has an IP address of 192.0.99.40)
-Interface: inside
-Key number: None
-Enable NTP authentication: no.
I have other Windows computers on the "inside" interface using the NTP Server, so NTP traffic is relayed without any problem. But somehow, the ASA5510 is not able to synchronize with the NTP Server.I see the following log entry:
-Source IP: 192.0.99.1
-Source Port: 123
-Destination IP: 192.0.99.40
-Destination port: 65535
-Description: Teardown UDP connection 3905 for inside: 192.0.99.1/123 to identity: 192.0.99.40/65535 duration 0:02:01 bytes 96
so it seems like the ASA5510 sends a request to the NTP Server, but I am not sure whether the reply doesn't get processed correctly, or the connection stays open too long (my UDP connection timeout is the default, 2 minutes).
I had trouble getting SonicWALL NSA2400s to use Windows 7 devices as NTP servers. I had to get a firmware version where there was no MD5 authentication (which I think is OK in this case), and change a setting in the Windows registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/services/W32Time/Config/AnnounceFlags: from 0xa to 0x5)

Basically, my desktop computer, running windows 7, wired connection via LAN, is having trouble connecting to the internet. It appears to be connected to the internet (all indicators are "green light"), but when I attempt to open a browser, for example, there is no response. After running a diagnosis, I found this: Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (Primary DNS server). The strange thing is that our apartment wireless network works just fine. I looked around on here for a solution, but all were entertaining laptops with wireless connections. My IPs are set to automatic as well.

Now to the point. We are making tests but can't make Static routes to work properly. Design is as follows:
Now we have seen that we need to use this command (in cmd) to add a static route in W2008:
route add [NETWORK DESTINATION] mask [SUBNETMASK] [GATEWAY] if [NIC]
Q1: What exact command(s) do we have to use to make the Laptop in 10.10.10.0 to access Internet? How would you fill those fields based on the diagram?
Q2: How many Static routes do we need to declare? I am guessing we just need one, but I have been told that I need to activate two (one for packets sent by the laptop to the router, and one for the packets sent by the router to the laptop?)
We have tried several combinations and can't make laptop to access Internet, not even to ping 192.168.1.5. We have just accomplished pinging to 192.168.1.181 from the Laptop, and to ping 10.10.10.2 from the Server but that's as far as we went.
I am using a old notebook (2 years old) with windows server 2008 on it. I needed to remove al the drivers, because windows server 2008 isn't using the drivers of windows xp, and it wanted a clean installation.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Windows xp computer can't connect to the DHCP server correctly and thus can't connect to the internet. It is connected through an Ethernet cable to a wireless router. All other computers on the same network connect fine to the router, both wired and wireless.This all started after I left my computer alone for a few hours and came back with it not coming out of idle. After shutting it off and turning it back on, it would not connect to the DHCP server.It assigned me the autoconfig address 169.254.189.73 because it couldn't connect to the DHCP server. I even tried a static IP but even that wouldn't fix it. I have tried the same ethernet cable in another computer and it worked fine so I know that it is because of my computer.I have tried renewing and releasing the connection using ipconfig in the command prompt but that did nothing. The settings are all the same as the other computers running through the same router. I have tried shutting down all the other computers and reconnecting the trouble one but again still nothing.The last thing I'm not sure about is the network adapter driver. I have reinstalled it but I'm not sure if the driver is correct. I have an NVIDEA nforce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter. I attempted to reinstall but I'm not sure I selected the correct generation when I downloaded the driver installer. My computer says nothing about the generation of the adapter so I just chose the newest generation. My adapter is integrated in the motherboard.

The server is being used for a basic outlook calendar across the various workstations, nothing major. Our current ISP provides us with a Static IP address. The party that installed and configured the server set it up to run the DHCP server on the server PC itself. As in, the machine running windows server is also running a software DHCP server for the entire network. THE SETUP: As of right now we have a wall port (internet access) with a cable running to a 8 port unmanaged netgear switch that has cables hooked up to the 5 workstations as well as the server itself. Pretty simple.THE QUESTION: How do I configure the ISP static settings on the DHCP Server portion of the Server PC? We may be getting a new ISP with a dynamic address OR a new static address. WHAT I'VE TRIED: I've tried configuring the IP address on the Server PC the way I would via the NIC adapter settings but it already has a internal IP address from the DHCP Server running on that PC so changing that was no good.
