VPN Gateway Via Cisco - Where To Place Windows Server

Apr 26, 2013

I am looking to add remote sites that will authenticate with the Windows Server using VPN via Cisco rv042 routers in a gateway to gateway setup. My main concern is the placement of the server to the router and what would be considered best practice. In my mind, option 1 seems to be what I want - however, this would mean disconnecting the WAN feed to the server (my ip is static and tied into the MAC address of the server). While option 2 doesn't look right to me, it would leave the existing configurations in place which would minimize my downtime (I think)

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 1841 - No Connection Through Gateway With Windows Server?

Aug 26, 2012

Our company has a Cisco 1841 router which provides our connection to the outside world. We also have a windows server which provides our DHCP and DNS services. Our workstations which also get their lease from the server (using DHCP) do have a connection to the outside world.

when we connect a new computer or other device to the network we can only ping as far as the inside interface of the router. But when we assign the ip settings staticly we do get a connection, even if we configure it with the exact same ip as a lease it got a few seconds ago.

Change The Default Gateway Of RDP On Server?

Oct 11, 2011

I rdp into our server 2008 via IP. This is a router on ip 0.1, this is forwarded to my server on IP 0.3. This server was setup with DHCP default gateway of 0.1. We added a new outside connection on IP 0.2. I was talked through the changes so that internal DHCP requests went to gateway IP 0.2 but RDP still used 0.1. I plan on getting rid of 0.1.Where is the setting to change the RDP to use default gateway of 0.2?

DNS Server Not Responding And Default Gateway Is Not Available?

Sep 29, 2012

I have been having some trouble with my internet for awhile now. It fine one second and than it will get really slow and eventually stop working. When I troubleshoot to see what the problem is it either gives me DNS server is not responding or default gateway is not available, sometimes it will give me both. It says it fixes the default gateway problem but it will show up again 5 minutes later.

Here is my ipconfig /all

Server Looses Connection To Gateway Only?

Oct 18, 2012

I have a server (Windows Server 2003) that randomly looses connection with the default gateway and anything on the outside. When this happens, the server cant ping the gateway (A Juniper SSG5 firewall/router) and the gateway cant ping the server. But the server still can ping anything else on the network and everything inside the network works fine with it. The most reliable remedy is to reboot the router. Rebooting the server or resetting the network card sometimes works. I have tried both onboard network cards and a separate PCI network card on the server. There are no router log entries that correspond to the problem. This server is used as a Terminal Server for a remote office and as a file server.

8080 How To Configure Gateway As Proxy Server

May 21, 2013

In my office environment, my machine is configured with an IP address, Subnet Mask and a Default Gateway. The Default Gateway does not allow internet connectivity but is configured to provide us with connectivity to some server based tool.

Now in order to provide us with the internet access, a proxy server is configured via the LAN settings in the IE. The problem here is the Proxy is restricted for some sites that I need like certain technical blogs and all, which it filters out in the blogs category and does not load.

I do have another Gateway server address that I can use in Local Area Connection IPv4 Properties as Default Gateway address which removes this restriction. I thought that this should be configurable to the LAN Settings as a proxy as well. But when I do so, I lose the connection to the internet.

I am not sure if all Gateways can act as proxy servers. Or is there anything that I am doing wrong. I am using the default port 8080 in LAN Settings.I can ask this from the technician but I am not sure if he would be able to answer that as he is just a first level guy. I thought of figuring it out myself.

Windows XP Ignoring Default Gateway?

Jun 1, 2012

We have a Windows XP machine on our network that is giving us a strange problem. We have it statically configured with an IP and a default gateway address which points to a router on our network. This is the same router that nearly all of our machines point to and none of the other machines have this issue. If we open up CMD and make a ping request from an outside server (public or interal servers on other subnets) we get a 'destination host unreachable' error. We can ping the ip address of the router that is assigned as the default gateway. We can circumvent this ip address by adding a static route ('route add' from CMD) directing all traffic on the network interface to the ip of the router. Once this is done we can ping and get a response from any server both internal and external. We also tried doing a tracert (without have the static route added) to an external site by IP address. The tracert does not even show a hop for the router so it seems as if the request is never making it past the interface on the XP machine. We simply get an error saying it is unable to find the host. Interesting though it does provide us with a domain name for the ip address. So somehow it is able to reslove DNS. (We have a local DNS server on the same subnet)

Cisco VPN :: 3825 - Easy VPN Server / Ping Default Gateway Of 192.168.1.1?

Nov 23, 2012

I used the Cisco Configuration Professional to add an Easy VPN Server to my 3825. I'm able to connect when remote but I can't ping the default gateway of 192.168.1.1 which is in the same network as the VPN DHCP pool. I can access every single other device on the VLAN segments but not the default gateway which means when i connect I can't look at my router. And there's more,  I cannot ping anything offnet (ie 75.75.75.75).

Attached are some images which show some details from the client during the VPN connect and a few from the router (i had to use the lan switch as a jump host). If you can figure this out before I go back to the coffee shop to test this tomorrow I will send you a cake.

Cisco WAN :: Can SM-ES3-16-P Used In Place Of HWIC-2FE

Apr 4, 2013

I want a low cost solution router with 16 10/100 routed ports...The idea is to club 16 different segments on ofc to this router via media convertor and there will be dynamic protocols such as EIGRP or higher running between these segments.

The router needs to be security enabled...the equipments needs to be a router by defination (not a layer 3 switch)..As per my understanding there is limitation on number of HWIC-2 FE that can be put in ISR G2 series due to which I cannot reach that figure...

Kindly let me know if i can use SM-ES3-16-P in the place of HWIC-2FE for this kind of requirement.

MSCHAPv2 / Setup Secure VPN Server Using Windows Server 2012 Without Domain?

Jan 10, 2013

i've been using a VPN to connect to my home network from elsewhere for a few months. It's set up as follows:

PPTP
Maximum Strength Encryption
EAP-MSCHAP-v2 Authentication

Now I find out that MSCHAPv2 authentication has been broken and is no longer considered secure (even by Microsoft), so I want to change the protocol I'm using to make it secure.

However, I've spent 3 hours now researching this and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use a better protocol on my Windows Server 2012 home server. I've tried setting up PEAP authentication (still PPTP) a la Microsoft's recommendation document, but it requires a certificate. I've created a self-signed certificate but it seems I can't issue certificates (via this method) without being a member of a domain, so I'm stuck. I can't even get started with L2TP since I can't find the option for it.

My question is this: Is there a way to setup a secure VPN server using Windows Server 2012 without a domain? If so, how do I do this?

Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT610N As DHCP Server For Another Gateway?

Jun 11, 2012

FiOS gave me an Actiontec router that every other day is getting into a state where it refuses to give out IP addresses via DHCP.  I have to reset the router to get it to work again. This seems ot have started in the last year, I assume due to some piece of equipment I added, or perhaps the VPN software or Windows 7 installed on my work laptop.  I've not been able to figure out what is tripping up the Actiontec router, so I decided to try moving the DHCP function over the WRT610N that I have. I basically had the WRT610N setup without DHCP enabled, no NAT and no RIP, so it was basically just working as an access point.  I left the Actiontec at 192.168.1.1 and assigned 192.168.1.2 to the WRT610N on the LAN side, while the WAN side is left disconnected.

I disabled DHCP on the Actiontec and enabled it on the WRT610N.  I also set the DNS server to 192.168.1.1 so it would go to the Actiontec for name resolution.  Using nslookup from a command prompt on a PC wireless connected to the WRT610N, I can see that names are indeed getting resolved.  However, it looks like the WRT610N is setting itself up as a the gateway at 192.168.1.2.  When trying to ping something out on the net, I get a message back saying that 192.168.1.2 is reporting the address as unreachable.

I assume this is because the WRT610N is handing out its own address (192.168.1.2) as the gateway.  Is there anyway to get the WRT610N to hand out a different gateway address than itself?  Optionally, is there a way to get the WRT610N to route requests coming to it over the Actiontec?I suppose I could just ditch the Actiontec altogether, but it seems a bit easier to use to setup port forwards and the like for various servers we have running.  It also has a coax MoCA interface which I believe our FiOS set-top boxes use for their internet connectivity, so I don't want to lose that.

WRT610N Server Acts As Gateway Using Routing And Remote Access

Feb 1, 2011

I've recently installed a new WRT610N router onto my small business network. Previously my network was as follows: Modem - Server - LAN where the server acts as a gateway using routing and remote access.

The addition to the setup now has the router between the modem and the server itself. After configuring everything - and DISABLING the router firewall and as last resort opening the server to the DMZ i'm having serious issues opening specific ports but not others.

To be specific - the server is sitting in the DMZ open right now. In my routing and remote access any port that I have being forwarded over to another computer is open from the internet with no issues. The problem lies with ports that need to be opened on the server itself with 127.0.0.1 where i'm getting a "connection timed out" from canyouseeme.org.

Why the local opening of ports is having issue? Before the router was installed everything worked great - however the router is needed for wifi and it cannot be configured as an access point only.

Cisco Routers :: RV042 - DHCP Giving Out Wrong Default Gateway And DNS Server

Oct 3, 2012

I have a RV042 router. The problem that I am having with it is that the DHCP is giving out the wrong Default Gateway and DNS Server. There is no option to change the DHCP server IP on any of the settings pages on the router. I am begining to think that there might not be a way to do it.  I see that there is an option for the DNS under the DHCP page but the Public IP that is being handed out is not the one on that page. I also have 2 WAN connections hooked up as well a DSL link and a Cable link (the cable link is the primary one).

The following information is provided in an effort to resolve this issue:
IP of Router 10.0.0.2
IP of DHCP Server (the one that is being handed out):10.0.0.1
IP of DNS (the one that is being handed out): 10.0.0.11

What I want to it be.
IP of Router: 10.0.0.2
IP of DHCP 10.0.0.2
IP of DNS 10.0.0.2

Cisco :: How To Place A Switch Before Two Routers

My current setup is optimum lightpath into a windows 2003 server running ISA 2004 out the a switch handling several servers and laptops/desktops. To setup a VPN connection we purchased a Cisco 1941 IAS but having a problem running this through the ISA Firewall. I giving it a static address and porting it to a external address through ISA <opening UDP and the IPsec 50 and 5000> but nothing. Unles to get this to work I decided to just put a switch before the firewall plugging the optimum router into the switch and then plugging the VPN router and the ISA server in the switch so all the IAS doesn't have to run through the firewall <if I lost you be tell me>
