WRT610N Server Acts As Gateway Using Routing And Remote Access
Feb 1, 2011
I've recently installed a new WRT610N router onto my small business network. Previously my network was as follows: Modem - Server - LAN where the server acts as a gateway using routing and remote access.
The addition to the setup now has the router between the modem and the server itself. After configuring everything - and DISABLING the router firewall and as last resort opening the server to the DMZ i'm having serious issues opening specific ports but not others.
To be specific - the server is sitting in the DMZ open right now. In my routing and remote access any port that I have being forwarded over to another computer is open from the internet with no issues. The problem lies with ports that need to be opened on the server itself with 127.0.0.1 where i'm getting a "connection timed out" from canyouseeme.org.
Why the local opening of ports is having issue? Before the router was installed everything worked great - however the router is needed for wifi and it cannot be configured as an access point only.

FiOS gave me an Actiontec router that every other day is getting into a state where it refuses to give out IP addresses via DHCP. I have to reset the router to get it to work again. This seems ot have started in the last year, I assume due to some piece of equipment I added, or perhaps the VPN software or Windows 7 installed on my work laptop. I've not been able to figure out what is tripping up the Actiontec router, so I decided to try moving the DHCP function over the WRT610N that I have. I basically had the WRT610N setup without DHCP enabled, no NAT and no RIP, so it was basically just working as an access point. I left the Actiontec at 192.168.1.1 and assigned 192.168.1.2 to the WRT610N on the LAN side, while the WAN side is left disconnected.
I disabled DHCP on the Actiontec and enabled it on the WRT610N. I also set the DNS server to 192.168.1.1 so it would go to the Actiontec for name resolution. Using nslookup from a command prompt on a PC wireless connected to the WRT610N, I can see that names are indeed getting resolved. However, it looks like the WRT610N is setting itself up as a the gateway at 192.168.1.2. When trying to ping something out on the net, I get a message back saying that 192.168.1.2 is reporting the address as unreachable.
I assume this is because the WRT610N is handing out its own address (192.168.1.2) as the gateway. Is there anyway to get the WRT610N to hand out a different gateway address than itself? Optionally, is there a way to get the WRT610N to route requests coming to it over the Actiontec?I suppose I could just ditch the Actiontec altogether, but it seems a bit easier to use to setup port forwards and the like for various servers we have running. It also has a coax MoCA interface which I believe our FiOS set-top boxes use for their internet connectivity, so I don't want to lose that.

ASA 8.3(2) 5505
I've configured a number of remote access vpns on ASAs, but I don't recall having a default gateway setting assigned after logging in.
Is there a way to disable the assignment of a default gateway upon login?
The value assigned is meaningless. It's just the next available address in the local pool.

I've got two RV082's connected. Each has a dynamic IP (changes typically every few weeks). I've configured the tunnels on both ends with a local and remote "Remote/Local Security Gateway Type" of "Dynamic IP + Domain Name(FQDN) Authentication".If I look at the VPN Summary tunnel status, it shows an IP address of "mydomain.dyndns.org 0.0.0.0" under the "Remote Gateway" column heading. The Tunnel Test "Connect" button is N/A.I can resolve both of the mydomain.dyndns.org entries on both sides of each VPN using the Diagnostic DNS lookup tool within each router. If I hardwire a fixed IP address for the Local and Remote Gateway everything works just fine. VPN is good.
I just can't seem to get the "mydomain.dyndns.org" function to work. It appears the router can't resolve the dynamic IP from the domain names on each of the routers.

I am just setting up a simple scenario with a 1841. Server @ 172.31.1.1 cannot ping 172.31.0.254 or 172.31.0.105. It can ping 172.31.1.250. The router can, on the other hand, ping devices on both networks. This is just for testing routing theory so I don't know why hosts on either side of the network cannot ping each other.
I am only using the FastEthernet interfaces on Router 1841.

I am looking at purchasing a new Server, but one of my main requirements is to have remote access for users. What are the requirements for good remoting services and which server OS would provide at least adequate remoting services. That is being remoting that provides concurrent use, speed where things do not load slowly and perhaps ease of use, so users can access files.

Our company has a Cisco 1841 router which provides our connection to the outside world. We also have a windows server which provides our DHCP and DNS services. Our workstations which also get their lease from the server (using DHCP) do have a connection to the outside world.
when we connect a new computer or other device to the network we can only ping as far as the inside interface of the router. But when we assign the ip settings staticly we do get a connection, even if we configure it with the exact same ip as a lease it got a few seconds ago.

I have a RV082 and several of my remote laptops cannot access my server using its domain name. It can be accessed using its internal ip address. The issue is that you can log onto the server using remote access and the ip however you cannot use any shortcuts using the domain name. You can see the server with the domin name however no access path is available. This is only on a few remote user laptops. Others work perfectly.

I'm setting up WHS 2011 for the first time. When attempting to set up Remote Web Access, WHS continues to recoginze my E4200 model information and router IP address but delivers the message 'Remote Web Access to Your Server is Blocked'. Cisco and MS say the router is compatible with WHS and that it should set up through the wizard but no luck following many attempts, including manual set up of DHCP Reservation and Single Port Forwarding on ports 80/443 (not sure I did this correctly).
I've taken the router back to default settings with the exception of enabling Remote Management under the Remote Management Access section of the Administration menu tab; tried again with the same result. What settings to change to make this work?

As shown in the diagram below, I have a central office and two branch offices, these offices are connected by a private routing service that has no connection to the Internet, the telecommunications operator in each office installs a router with a LAN and a WAN IP and configuration of these devices cannot be changed except the LAN IP. Only the central office network that is 192.168.0.0 have a router that has internet access. Remote offices have no access to the internet, what is needed is that remote offices can access the internet using ADSL router 192.168.0.254 at the central office. There are a small devices in each remote office that must connect to the internet and do not support any configuration except IP, mask and gateway, for example you cannot add a static route. Currently the pcs at remote offices has IP communication with the server from the central office using a static route.Does the solution would be to put some VPN routers between each LAN and the operator's routers (where RT yellow star appears in the diagram) and put the hosts of the two branch offices same IP range that the central office network?

I picked up a pair of RV220W's and before I spent loads of time at a remote site, I figured I'd go through some VPN testing at home to make sure I could get it setup properly. What this means is I've plugged the Internet uplink into a switch, then from the switch into both routers & configured them (using unique static IP's for each) from there. For what its worth: While I have some IT experience, I don't have strong networking experience.
I setup several VLAN's on the local RV220W, and the end result is to make it so that an asset at the remote site with an IP in any of the ranges (192.168.121.0/24, 192.168.131.0/24, 192.168.141.0/24 and any future VLANs) can communicate with/access resouces at the local site. Likewise, an asset at the local site with an IP in any of the ranges (.121, .131, .141 + any future VLANs) should be able to reach the remote resources (currently just 192.168.181.0/24, but future VLANs as well).
This evening I tried to focus on the relevant VPN pages of the Administration Guide to get the VPN up. Leaving the defaults I got as far as establishing a link between both sites and it seems that things are working right: From the remote site (.181) I can access the local site (.121, .131, .141); and from the local site I can at least ping resources (a laptop) on the remote site. (Yay!)
However, when I physically connected an asset that had a 192.168.121.X, 192.168.131.X and 192.168.141.X IP addresses to the remote RV220W (which is 192.168.181.0/24), I couldn't see it from the remote or local sites.I assume this is expected. But I'm reaching out to the community to see what other possibilities might be available becuase networking is a weak area for me. I figured it might be something like a Static [or Dynamic] Route but I really am not 100% sure.
'TECHNICAL' SPECS
Local Router LAN/WAN Settings:
LAN IP: 192.168.121.1 on default VLAN (1)
VLAN 13 defined 192.168.131.1 with DHCP enabled; Reservations created outside of DHCP scope
VLAN 14 defined 192.168.141.1 with DHCP enabled, Reservations created outside of DHCP scope
Inter VLAN Routing enabled for all VLANs

We have a gateway on a 4503, say on port 2/1, and we only want the other devices that are plugged into the 4503 to be able to talk to the gateway and thats it. The other devices are Motorola TUT DSL devices and they plug into the 4503 directly.
Normally "switchport protected" would make this very easy to keep stuff on one port from talking to other ports but with 4500's you are not able to do that command. So we implemented a MAC Access-List Extended ACL. Here is what we did
mac access-list extended BLAH
permit #host 0000.XXXX.YYYY any
interface range fa 2/5 - 20
mac access-group BLAH out
The MAC address 0000.XXXX.YYYY is the MAC address of the gateway that is plugged into Fa2/1 and the DSL TUT devices are plugged into ports Fa2/5-20. We would think that this config would only allow devices on the TUT DSL to talk only to the Gateway but we don't really think this is happening. The TUT devices are learning about MAC addresses that are on other TUT devices.

When I try downloading, it opens a small ie window with an error message, and at the next step it says link is broken.

Im having trouble with getting my VPN to work on my brand new WRVS4400N router. i cant find the solution to my problem, no matter how much i read about it.
WRVS4400N:
Firmware Version: V2.0.0.8-ETSI
QuickVPN:
Version: 1.4.1.2
The laptop im trying to connect to the gateway via VPN is a Windows 7 x64 HP Elitebook 8540p with a internal mobile broadband (HSPA+)So.The scenario is that i've installed the QuickVPN client on my Win7-machine without any trouble.I've created a user in the web-administration of the router. The router is configured to disable "Block WAN requests" in the firewall, apart from that the firewall is on.When trying to connect - with a valid certificate that i created, i get a error message after the dialog telling me "Verifying network":"The remote gateway is not responding. Do you want to wait?".
The log.txt tells me:

My D-Link655 is 6 months old. Liked it so much that I bought one for my sister in-law, and my mother/father in-law. Whenever my son's Mac PowerBook Pro (latest Mac OS) is on the network (WiFi) the router intermittently stops working. It loses connection for both WiFi and Wired (at the same time). The intermittent issues seem to disappear when he disconnects the MacBook Pro.
-Current Firmware Version :1.32NA
-Current Firmware Date :2009/07/09
Perhaps it is coincidence, but it seems when the Mac is connected, the router fails every so many minutes (both WiFi and Wired). When the Mac is disconnected, the intermittent issues are gone.

Got a new EA6500 a few days ago and from the start it acts as if times out and goes to sleep. Any time I enter a URL i get a long pause then the website unavailable message... refresh a few times then suddenly it works fine. this is for both connected and wireless. Even when I have the Linksys Smart WiFi open, I'll get a pop-up message that no router connected, then it goes away and everything is fine. Sometimes the old Windows Network message pops up asking me to connect. Works fine once it's "ON", but always have to refresh page a few times to get it to wake up.
