Security / Firewalls :: Windows Vista Firewall / Internet Not Working
Apr 4, 2011i am using windows vista on my laptop.i was using zone alarm firewall, but switched it to windows firewall.after switching, my internet was cutoff. i can see that i am connected to my network, but cant get to internet.when i run diagnosis on my laptop, it gives me three options:
my Ethernet driver is having hardware issue.
my wireless driver is having hardware issue.
ip protocol binding is having issue. check ipv4 and ipv6 settings.

Jul 30, 2012I have an HP DV7-1135nr running vista 64bit. Due to lack of space and generally needing to be refreshed, I used my recovery CDs to "factory reset" my laptop to the way it was when I bought it. After it finished I attempted to use the Internet wirelessly and it would only connect locally. I chose to repair the signal in the "network and sharing" window and it said it could not communicate with the DNS server. I plugged in the Ethernet cable and it jumped right online. I used windows update and after 4 hours of updates and restarts, I tried wireless again it only connects locally. Back to ethernet I logged onto HP website and tried to scan my computer for driver updates with there tool but the site was down. I checked my adapter and it is an atheros 5007 but when I searched for atheros or atheros drivers I couldn't find anything that seemed legit. They don't have a website? I read forums and found posts of people shutting off a DHCP broadcast flag with good luck. I found a few �having problems with the same adapter as myself but none of this started until I restored it this time. ( I have restored it 2 times before with no problem). My next step was shutting off all the security. It worked and everything was great until i turned the security back on. It reverts back to local only. I tried wpa, wpa2 and no luck. The only thing I can think of is that my drivers are old, I checked the version of windows and it still is on sp1, why hasn't it updated to sp2 yet?

Windows Vista On A Dell Laptop / Wireless Works But Using LAN Cable Does Not
Nov 22, 2011I'm running Windows Vista on a Dell Laptop. Normally I just use wireless wherever I am but now I need to hard wire to the computer. It was initially working for a few minutes but then the connection dropped. Now whenever I plug the cable in, it shows it as being connected but comes up as local only so I can't browse or do anything.
I have tried:
-Restarting the machine
-Ensuring that windows was picking up the IP addresses automatically
-Checking the connection on another computer, works fine.
-Disabling the IpV6
-Disabling/Enabling the LAN connection in the Manage network connections setup
-Uninstalling, re installing the driver for the ethernet adapter
-System Restore
I've also tried in safe mode with networking and have disabled any firewalls that were running.Again, most of the time I never use the hard wired connection, but whenever I have, it hasn't had any problems until now.It always comes up as being connected, but says local only.

She can connect to the network (she says) but cannot use the internet.She has made sure she is typing in the security key correctly.I got her to try different encryption methods and she says these did not work.Tried resetting the network stack.Tried flushing DNS.Made sure Obtain IP and DNS automatically are checked.Tried setting up a wireless connection manually.There may be other things i've suggested but cant remember at the moment as well.Connecting via an ethernet cable works so its definitely a wireless problem. Her phone works using the wireless network ok, its just the laptop.

Mar 8, 2011The problem I was having was my laptop wouldn't connect to my new router provided by them, it would say it was connected but 'Local Only'. Turned out in the end all I needed to do was update my Atheros and Realtek drivers. Months down the line, now having the same symptoms, I decide to update my drivers only to find out there are no updates available and my drivers are up to date and working. The only other thing that may be the root to the this problem is the fact last night I connected to my girlfriends router at her house with this same laptop. Now I come back to my router this evening and I'm having these symptoms I had months ago. It's also saying the network is 'Undentified' eventhough it SAYS it's connected. It doesnt allow me to access the internet at all. I removed the history of my girlfriends connection on manage wireless networks, including my own.

Nov 5, 2011Was able to connect to my network fine a couple of days ago. Now It doesn't want to work.
Everytime I try it seems like I connected (the little blue globe symbol displays) but when I try and go to a webpage, the connection times out or moves slow. When I run diagnose and repair it tells me that this computer has "limited or no connectivity" even though I'm able to connect to other networks. Selecting the "automatically get new IP settings" and "reset network adapter" options don't work. After selecting these earlier it was telling me "unable to connect to primary DNS server", then it was telling me "windows has confirmed this computer is currently experiencing a network connectivity problem". Now it's telling me there is no problem in spite of the slow connection.
I don't think my wireless adapter is the issue, I'm able to connect to other networks fine. I don't think the router/modem is the issue, there's another computer in the house (that I don't own) as well as my xbox hooked up wireless to it with no problem.
