Cisco WAN :: High CPU On 3750 Running Routing

May 28, 2012

I have a small network of 4 x 3750s running routing (OSPF) which contain all company firewalls. It bridges internal trusted corporate networks (depots etc) to external untrusted networks (Internet/Datacenter networks). It sees a fairly high level of traffic running through it (it gets forwarded to firewalls at gig speed).OSPF is costed to remove asymetric routing so one 3750 is acting as primary and does most of the work. The 3750s are in area 0, and all other areas are summarised to some degree. However, CPU is running high on the 3750 when looking at the history at times: [code]

although the average is around 26% the 72hour picture would suggest that CPU is running at 100% at times. Is this an imminent concern that needs re-designing, or is this normal behaviour (SPF running for instance) that is manageable?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst 4507-R Running 15.1.2 - High CPU Utilization

Feb 11, 2013

we have 2 catalyst 4507 Switches (Catalyst 4507-R running 15.1.2.release) configured in VRRP and vlans are distributed across both the switches.For few vlans core1 is master and for remaining vlans core2 is master.Both cores showing different CPU utilization.when we did our troubleshooting,we realized that the server vlan on core1 (Core1 is master for this vlan) is creating high utilization.when we switched this server vlan to core2 the core1 utilization came down and core2 utilization increased.we identified that server vlan is culprit in this issue.  i would like to know weather any method is available in core switch wherein i can check which server in this vlan is contributing for this utilization.(To identify the server which contribute this utilization,we can actually shut 1 server each at time to see weather utilization is going down.with this kind of testing ideally we should be able to identify the server but this will disturb the server environment which we don't want in live environment)

Would there be any reason why a universal image wouldn't stack correctly with other switches running the single .bin file?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: High CPU Utilization On 3750 - PID 296?

Apr 24, 2013

I've been looking at reported problems with our Vdeio Conferencing kit attched to a stack of 3750's (which I think is down to QoS) but this got me looking at the logs. We get a lot of high CPU utilization warnings mainly for SNMP (315), Hulc running con (95), Virtual exec (289). I understand the last two are normal, and the SNMP one is probably Cisco Works polling as it happens every 4 hours.

However I've got an odd one: Apr 25 07:34:58: %SYS-1-CPURISINGTHRESHOLD: Threshold: Total CPU Utilization(Total/Intr): 93%/0%, Top 3 processes(Pid/Util):  296/85%, 144/0%, 154/0%

What is Pid 296? It's not listed on the switch:

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750 - Running 7 To 9 Switches In One Stack

Aug 6, 2012

Looking for feedback from other organizations that have large 3750 stacks.  I've got one stack of (8) 3750's composed of (6) 3750G's and (2) plain 3750's.  This particular stack is usually unresponsive to SNMP queries and often fails to write config when we make changes.  After a couple tries it will finally go.  Part of my probably here is likely the plain 3750's that always boot faster and come up as the master.  I should manually set the master to one of the G's.  What I'm wondering is who else has 7-9 3750's stacked and are they performing well for SNMP, telnet, etc?  I've got another newer stack of 7 3750E's that I need to add one more switch to.  Need to decide if I want extended downtime to break the stack up or just add the 3750X to make member 8 and hope it performs well.  I have 50+ 3750 stacks working great on our campus.

i want to understand why this 2 proceses (DHCPD & ARP input) taking more memory?High CPU: We also facing intermediate high CPU utilization (above 95%). When CPU is high there were 2 processes consuming more CPU are 'Spanning Tree' (about 20%) & ARP Input (about 66%). we also checked the ARP entries, there were 1500 ARP entries & 2 incomplete ARP (out of 6000 ARP supported)

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Can TCAM Memory Cause High CPU On 3750 Stack

We have a 3750 stack with a mix of 3750G and 3750X switches. The current active template on the switch is desktop default and we are running EIGRP on the switch with large routing table so we get the TCAM error that a specific prefix cannot be programmed in TCAM memory so it will be software forwarded.%PLATFORM_UCAST-4-PREFIX:  One or more, more specific prefixes could not be programmed into TCAM and are being covered by a less specific prefix, and the packets may be software forwarded

This error is quite frequent on a daily basis. My question is that will this error create a high CPU situation and affect traffic processing on the stack causing ESX Hosts to become unresponsive?

Cisco WAN :: 3750 L3 / EIGRP Load Balancing While Running HSRP?

Dec 15, 2010

I'm trying to configure load balancing on a network that is using 4 3750 L3 switches.  The network is comprised of two sites with two switches at each site running HSRP and the virtaul IP is the gateway for a server between the two switches.  The sites are connected by two independant 200meg ethernet connections (technically they are GigE limited to 200meg) p2p circuits.  The switches at site A are connected together via a GigE port and the server I have connects to each switch at its respective site using a GigE port and the same for site B.

The problem I'm running into is that I've noticed that one of the 200meg circuits is always idol unless the primary goes down, so I'd like to be able to load balance the traffic from site A to site B using both p2p circuits.  I think the problem that I'm running into has to do with the fact that HSRP is putting one of the links from the server to switch in standby unless the WAN link goes down and therefore traffic is not taking the "longer route" to the 2nd 200meg circuit.The only traffic going across this network is only the two servers sending traffic to one another. how I can get load balancing to work or if it is a possiblity with this network topology?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750X Static Routing When Running LAN Base?

Dec 27, 2012

I have a stack of 2 x 3750X switches these are running 12.2(55)SE5. I needed to add some static IP routes and found that the ‘ip routing’ command is not supported. I came across a document that stated “On switches running the LAN base feature, static routing on VLANs is supported only with Cisco IOS Release 12.2(58)SE and later.” So I have upgraded to 12.2(58)SE2, but ‘ip routing’ is still not a valid command.

The release notes state:“On the Cisco Catalyst 3560-X and 3750-X Series, it adds support for 16 static IPv4 routes in the LAN Base image.”

I have read other posts that talk about running the ‘sdm prefer routing’ command which I have done, but I am still unable to add any routes or run the ‘ip routing’ command.

Cisco WAN :: 2801 High CPU Load / Low Traffic / High Interrupts

Nov 26, 2012

We installed a solution with 2 Cisco 2801, BGP multihomed failover.

1) The router which is currently getting all the traffic gets to 55% to 60% of CPU usage when handling 40 SIP/RTP streams . This equals 10Mbit up/10Mbit down and it showed around 5800 packets TX and around 5800 packets RX, with a majority of them CEF switched. As those figures are way less than the performance figures published by Cisco, we wonder if we made any mistake in setting up our router, or if we can do something to improve the router setup.

2) Does it have an impact on router performance if we increase/decrease RTP packet size, thus increasing or decreasing the pps relative to the consumed bandwidth?

3) If it is not possible to improve router configuration, we also wonder about possible replacement units for those routers. Would a 2901 do a good job? By how much would it rise the capacity? What other models would you recommend if we plan to rise the number of concurrent calls by a factor of 4 or even 8 times of what we have now (so up to 48000 pps and 80Mbit).

Here is what we tried:

- ip route-cache same-interface does not seem to improve anything

- ip flow ingress on or off makes no difference

- disabling the inbound ACL on fa0/0 seems to reduce load by 10%, although I don't understand why - a very high percentage is CPU interrupts, and ACLs are process switched, or not?

- we tried following the Cisco guide for high CPU due to high interrupts, with no success

Here are some usage statistics:

The graphs that we plot via SNMP show a propotional growth/increase of CPU and bandwidth (and thus pps) At the highest loads, we had a bit more than 55% CPU utilization with more than 50% interrupt CPU.

CPU utilization for five seconds: 36%/30%; one minute: 30%; five minutes: 30%
PID Runtime(ms)     Invoked      uSecs   5Sec   1Min   5Min TTY Process
127       13140         954      13773  2.00%  0.29%  0.07% 194 SSH Process

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Replacing 3750 24 Port With 3750 48 Port?

May 21, 2012

We have a stack of switches that is at the max number of members allowed in the stack. Problem is we are running out of port density and need to add more ports. So instead of adding a whole new stack I would rather replace 2 of the 24-port swicthes with 48-port switches.

If the two 24-port swicthes we are removing are stack members and neither of them are the stack master, I should be able to replace the 24-port switches with the 48-port switches without bringing the master offline? If the new 48-port switches are running the same IOS version as the current 24-port swicthes, they should add themselves to the stack?Would I have to tell the new 48-port swicthes what switch numbers they are replacing in order for them to be added to the stack since we are at the max number of members?Also since the 48-port swicthes are replacing 24-port switches will the master give the 48-port switches the configuration for only the 24-ports?

Last week i got call from customer saying that the CPU again went high for around a minute on both the cores. Last time i added CoPP also on the switch in order to prevent the CPU reaching 100%. Still it went high and from the captured logs i saw that the process created the high CPU was Port Manager Per and SSH process. Attached the file created by the netdr capture command.
