Cisco WAN :: Memory Faults On 2800 Routers?
Feb 5, 2013
Any known problem with the DRAM on 2800 routers? Over the past few months we have had four 2800s fail to reboot after power off/on and in all cases this was due to faulty DRAM. All four routers had been working fine for months with no problems and only failed after being rebooted. They all failed when trying to load the IOS into memory and therefore all got stuck in rom mon. The compact flash cards were all ok as a working 2800 booted up using the flash from the faulty routers. I haven't seen a field notice so are we just unlucky here?

The issue is when I am using PPTP the router seems to die, not every time but I would say about once a week now. I am the only PPTP user, simply using RDP. A few hours into an RDP session the PPTP connection drops and cannot be re-established, or quickvpn, nothing. Routing still works (somewhat, high latency) locally.
When I've checked the logs both times I see:

We have recently purchased a brand new RV042G VPN router, set it up, and had it running for a while without issues.
Now that we are actually trying to use the VPN functionality, the router becomes unstable after a while, showing "out of memory" lines in the logs, and after a day or two the VPN stops working completely and the web interface becomes completely inaccessible.
This issue happens when using any sort of VPN that's supported by the router.

We have an MPLS network to a half dozen remote sites. At our main location we have a 2800 series router. In the routers config are the following lines for QOS. When I go to the routers on the other end of the MPLS, none of them are configured with these same policies. Would these not be in the running config of the 1800 series routers, or is this not setup correct and this should be removed?

I recently added a business cable modem to relieve some of the congestion I was getting on my T1 for our MPLS network. There was an ASA 5510 collecting dust in a closet here and I thought it would be the perfect device for firewalling the traffic coming in from the Cable modem, and handling the routing of our internal MPLS traffic as well. Internet setup was cake. The test laptop I have using the ASA as it's gateway has great internet service but it cannot ping across either of our MPLS networks. I have one MPLS with AT&T and one MPLS with EarthLink. My hope was to use the cable modem as the Default route for all unspecified internet traffic and route our internal MPLS traffic to the cisco 2800 routers that are currently in place for the MPLS. I can ping across the MPLS when I telnet to the ASA, but I cannot ping across the MPLS from the client that is connected to the ASA.
Here's the topology I'm working with

I am currently setting up a 2800 Series router, and prefer a username/password type authentication rather than a single enable password. To do this, I did:
Router(config)# username <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword>
Router(config)# username2 <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword>
Router(config)# aaa new-model
Router(config)# aaa authentication login default local
This basically does what I want - when I connect to the router through console, it immediately asks me for a username and password. The thing is - as soon as I provide the right credentials, it takes me to USER EXEC mode (the default command mode). Is it possible to change that so that after entering the credentials, I go right into privileged exec mode?
Bonus question: As it is now, I just have no enable password, so when I login with my credentials, I issue "enable" to enter privileged exec mode without it prompting for an additional password. Is it safe to do it this way - having no enable password but requiring a username and password for login?

I have two CISCO 2800 routers tied together over a Metro Ethernet bewteen an HQ location and a Colocation facility. There are multiple subnets on both sides of the MAN. All things work in this regard.
I added two new Interfaces to the routers to create a VPN failover should the above MAN go down. I use IP SLA to track the MAN, then move to the VPN route when reachability is down.
I can source ping from one CISCO router Interface to the other, through the two interfaces to the Sonicwalls and reach the router interface of the CISCO on the other side of the VPN tunnel.
Problem: I can not ping any subnet behind the interface I ping through the Sonicwall VPN tunnel?
Example 2800 G0/2 interface 100.1.1.41 /30 through Sonicwal over Internet to other Sonicwall and out ot the G0/2 100.1.10.41 /30 interface on the other 2800 router. Ping is fine.

Upgrading the memory on an 1841. After inserting a 256MB/PC133/SDRAM/DIMM it would not post during the boot, hangs. If i take out the chip it works fine. The on-board memory is 128, so the 256 is the max it would take to a total of 384. According to the documentation this should work. The memory chip is a Transcend chip, basically Samsung.

I am doing the initial configuration on our ASA 5510 to use our Radius server just as our 3005 VPN Concentrator did. I can do the test connection inside the ASA with no problems, and when I authenticate using the Anyconnect client, it appears to authenticate fine, but then dumps the connection with an error stating there is not enough memory in he ASA to allow this connection, the error message is as follows:
Error Message %ASA-4-722004: Group group User user-name IP IP_address Error responding
to SVC connect request.
Explanation There is not enough memory to perform the action.
Recommended Action Purchase more memory, upgrade the device, or reduce the load on the device.
Can this really be the case with no connections active, a single user attempting to authenticate through Radius and an out-of-the-box ASA 5510?

I've deployed many Cisco PIX 501 v6.3.3 either as normal firewalling feature and/or with VPN features enabled. I noticed in all my deployments, regardless if it's during peak hours or after office hours, the memory utilization is always consistent 11MB utilized over the total of 16MB(memory default size).

how to check , if memory is not sufficient ?further if any users using utorrent or any thing like that , does it make enormous no of connections form same pc ?
is their any licence requird for IOS IPS ?i prefer to turn this feature on to kill torrents connections ? but i fear crashing of router as no of users are huge !any know bug with glbp , nat with ip voice image C3825-IPVOICE-M VERSION 12.4(24) T4 ???

I have a Cisco 2800 router. I have been noticing a lot of traffic to Pandora lately. At times my pipe is 25% music streaming and my router utilization can be quite high. Our web filtering is a hosted service that does not block all traffic depending on some of the ports. It is really designed for port 80 and 443 only.
We decided we want to block access to Pandora completely on both our primary internal LAN's and our Guest wireless LANs.
When I perform the ARIN lookup, I get these results for the IP range:
NetRange: 208.85.40.0 - 208.85.47.255
CIDR: 208.85.40.0/21
The CIDR notation does not make sense to me entirely. The IP range includes 8 class C networks. The /21 is a class b subnet of 255.255.248.0 or a router broadcast address for routing tables (depending on how you want to look at it). I was not sure if I could block the address based on the router CIDR range of if I had to use the individual classful IP ranges.
Should I block "208.85.40.0 0.0.7.255" in my ACL or should I create 8 entries to block the networks like this?
208.85.40.0 0.0.0.255
208.85.41.0 0.0.0.255

I am operating a 2800 series Cisco router. The router is working fine except that I am not able to SSH into the router. I have checked the running config with cisco's documentation and every line is correct. Prior to me getting this job they did an update and think they have corrupted the a certificate key for SSH.
Any command to generate just the SSH key and not all the other keys that would cause bigger connection issues.

I have 2 2800 series routers configured the same, but with different subnets. One works fine, the other the client can't obtain an IP, and hardcoded, cant ping.
I ran DHCP debug and I can see the router assigning the IP, and I see and ARP entry that matches the MAC of the client.
