Cisco WAN :: Network Performance When Upgraded To IOS 12.4.24.T5 On 881W

Jun 13, 2011

I have a Cisco 881W router.  It has historically run IOS 12.4 (20.T3) without issue.  I recently upgraded the IOS to version 12.4 (24.T5).  Once I made that upgrade, my ability to fully throttle my downstream bandwidth became seriously limited and variable going from a steady 6Mbps to an unreliable 2-3Mbps.  No other changes were made to my environment.  The degredation in performance was so bad that my AppleTV would no longer stream Netflix or YouTube.I downgraded back to the original IOS 12.4 (20.T3) and the downstream bandwidth and variability issues disappeared.  As well, my ability to stream movies or videos with my AppleTV on Netflix or YouTube returned without issue.I wonder if upgrading to IOS 12.4.24.T5 enabled some new commands that I'm not catching or there is something else at play that I'm totally missing.

Remote Network Performance Monitoring

Feb 2, 2011

I need to track and record all functionality, connectivity speeds and applications of a remote laptop. Here's the basic set up of my problem:We have 40 medical facilities in five Western States, each with up to 30+ pieces of hardware including thin clients, PCs, laptop computers and wall mounted touch screen kiosks operating on a variety of OS including primarily XP pro, then Linux and transitioning into Win 7.We have installed Aruba wireless network in each building on which our mobile medical cart laptops connect. Each facility has a different mix of primary and backup/failover ISP from DSL, Cable, T1 to Bonded T. All are at or exceed 22MB down, 5MB up save the T1s at their dedicated 1.5 and we monitor speeds and network stats trhough our gateway device. PfSense. All employees connect through an RDP (Remote Connection) to our hosting company in Atlanta, GA where the farm of about 28 servers reside hosting our medical, email and office applications. We regularly are contacted by nursing and clinical office staff complaining that "the network is slow". We review connection speeds, loads, ping times and confirm that there are no ISP Speed issues that are causing the "Slowness". However when we review exactly what the nurses mean by "slow" it invariably turns to how long it takes to log in to the RDP sessions and access then run their medical applications in the RDP. They often sit and wait for the RDP to load for five minutes or more and complain of waiting for their typing to catch up in the applications they work in.

We believe the slowness occurs once they are connected in the RDP and that their problems are occurring at the hosting company's facility, getting through their firewall, through profile management and server hardware/software but we can not prove this is the case because the hosting company always claims they see perfectly acceptable speeds and access on their side and we are locked out from access to monitor tehir environment. Changing hosting companies is probelmatic because they are specialised in our industry and leaving would be diffcult. I need some software that I can install on a few machines in a select few of our facilities that will track and record the actual user experience so that we can watch and review exactly what is happening, what the network stats look like and precisely where the user is experiencing "slowness".

Poor Network Performance On Belkin Router?

Nov 30, 2012

I run my virgin broadband through an old NTL modem and a Belkin router. I haveit all attached to a computer in my study along with a new 6TB Buffalo Nas drive. The computer has GIGABIT LAN. I use Belkin powerline units to relay the network around the house. In my lounge i have a blu ray player, AV amp and my sky box attached to the network via the Belkin powerline units and all run ok. This week i have added a Cambridge audio streamer but i am suffering now from a lot of dropouts and network failures escpecially when trying to stream music from my NAS. all seem to be set up correctly as per the manuals. I have spent a lot on this unit specificallly to stream my music so this is really important to get working correctly The powerline units can flash blue (fast ) or orange (slower) but i only see the orange light .My local dealer says i need to upgrade my Modem/Router and has suggested an ASUS RT-N66U which I understand is a modern 2.5/5ghz model . he says my system is overloaded

A few questions.

Is this a suitable modem for me to use on my Virgin cable broadband? (apparently there are two alternatives types of modem/router)
Is there a better alternative unit ?
Could there be another cause for my problems and if so how do i diagnose them ?

Cisco Wireless :: AP541N Poor Performance Of Network Connection

Dec 5, 2011

We have two Cisco AP541N running our wireless network in the office. They're configured with the same SSID, so that people are automatically switched between the two access points depending on their location in the office.

Frequently we are experiencing very poor performance of our wireless connections and it seems to be related to when 4-5 clients are connected to one access point. After restarting it (which also moves the 5 clients to the other access point), the performance problem goes away for a while.

I've upgraded one to firmware version AP541N-K9-2.0(1) (the other is running AP541N-K9-1.8(0)), but it doesn't seem to work.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Network Performance - 3850 Versus 2960

Jun 3, 2013

I have a network coming up for a switch refresh.  Management is pushing for 2960s and I would like 3850s.  We are running Cisco Voice and Video over the network.  I saw a few things that seemed to be in favor of a Layer 3 switch vs. a Layer 2 switch.  Some items like better performance due to switching based on IP vs. switching based on MAC.  Some information that will show the 3850 to be a better choice or that the 2960 is capable.

CISCO881W-GN-E-K9 vs. C881W-GN-E-K9. What's the difference between these routers?

For example, the CISCO881G-K9 has a 3.5G ExpressCard Modem and the C881G has an embedded one with GPS and 3.7G in most versions. The C881G is, for all I know, the newer one. But there is no information whatsoever about any feature or license differences.

Cisco :: Upgraded Configuration Of About 650 Devices

Apr 5, 2012

I have upgraded the configuration of about 650 Cisco devices (catalyst switches, routers, ASA, VGxxx, etc.) so as to integrate a new AAA server (Cisco ACS 5.3). This AAA server is bound with an Active Directory Server (MS Windows Server 2008 R2) for user authentication (only for admin purpose not for network access). Before this upgrade, the AAA server was Cisco ACS 4.1 (not bound to the Active Directory Server). Cisco devices are managed with a Cisco LMS 4.01 server. I modified the Network Level Login Credentials of the full privileged user of LMS because any caracters of the password were not accepted by AD. Therefore, in order to maintain the telnet connection availibility beetween the LMS server and the network devices, I had also to upgrade the appropriate device credentials in DCR. Finally I got the following issue when performing the credential verification : telnet incorrect !

When performing direct telnet connection with TeraTerm, I can reach the device and the user authentication is well performed by the ACS server and the AD server. Log files on the ACS 5.3 server show the accepted connection, the initiator and the tarjet device. But when LMS sends a telnet connection on to the same device (through a credential verification job), the ACS 5.3 does not receive the authentication inquiry (nothing in the tacacs+ log file). When performing AAA authentication debugging on the switch, the bind message repeats many times with no following authorization message (as requested also in debug). [code]

I reversed to the initial configuration of the switch (with ACS 4.1 as AAA server, not bound to AD) and performed a test with the same LMS server (with reversed credential data). The credential verification job is successful and the debug mode of AAA shows a correct negotiation beetween the switch and its ACS server : [code]

Indeed the ACS 4.1 authentication log file lists the successfull connection of the LMS server to the switch. In the two cases I exported the device credentials to a csv file to check the availability of each.

So, how to explain why a telnet session initiated by a terminal, can connect in both cases (ACS 4.1 ans ACS 5.3) to the switch and a telnet session coming from a LMS job can only connect to the ACS 4.1 server? When the switch "sees" an incoming telnet session request from everywhere, it must send it to the AAA server specified for authentication. I do not anderstand why the request from LMS is not sent to ACS (no record in log file, even according authentication deny.

Cisco Wireless :: 881W Can't Set DNS Or Domain Server On AP

Feb 2, 2012

I have a Cisco 881W configured for wireless (just a PSK, nothing special). I can get out to the Internet OK and browse to everywhere except my own websites.

It runs on a connection that does not connect directly to my network, but our website is available to the world externally.

Now, from the router a traceroute and ping work fine to our website but from the wireless connection I can get to everywhere else on the web but our website. A traceroute just stars out. I'm using 8.8.8.8 as a DNS server and nslookup resolves the DNS.

I can't set a DNS server or domain server on the ap on the 881W so are there any commands I can use to see what's going on?

Cisco VPN :: 881W ISR - EasyVPN With Firewall Setup

May 16, 2012

I'm in the process of setting up a working VPN/Firewall setup on an 881W ISR.  I have the firewall, NAT, and VPN working, and I'm able to connect remotely to my router.  The problem I am having is that I none of my VPN cllients can connect to the internet.  I suspect that my firewall rules may have something to do with this.  Let me break-down what I have, and what I want to achieve:

1. My router is setup with VLAN1 (172.16.1.0/24) as the inside zone (in-zone), while my outside zone (out-zone) is FastEthernet4 (DHCP WAN Interface).  I also have a guest zone (guest-zone) VLAN12 (192.168.12.0/24) used for my guest SSID wireless, which is NATed to the outside zone.

2. I have my EasyVPN setup using a Virtual Template Interface that terminates at the WAN interface FastEthernet4 (something tells me this should be changed).  Should I terminate at VLAN1, or an interface or loopback on VLAN1?

3. I ultimately want the VPN users to be able to conenct to the local resources on VLAN1 only, while being able to get out to the internet. [code]

Save? [yes/no]: n Proceed with reload? [confirm] .

Once I hit enter to proceed with the reload, the router power cycled. From that point forward, I never got a link light or connection via my ether net cable to the router on any of the ether net ports (0,1,2,3). I can get a link light on WAN FE4, but no DHCP ip address to telnet in. I do not have a Cisco USB console cable, which is why I've been trying this via my ether net cable.
