Cisco Wireless :: Configure Different SSIDs For Both Bands On 1252 And WLC?
Sep 9, 2012
I found a few older forum posts and documents online discussing how to create multiple SSIDs on 1 1252 AP using the WLC and they state that VLANs are needed for the interface and then I've read that multiple SSIDs on 1 interface are also possible. I'm not sure on how to actually configure this. I would like my 2.4Ghz radio on the 1252 to be associated with the current SSID in production and the 5Ghz band associated with another SSID that's in production. I couldn't find an option in the WLC or anything stated in the documents I've read about how to associate the radio band with the SSID.

Currently my company has 1 primary SSID that is used throughout both floors of the building. We have 1252 LAPs which have 2.4 and 5Ghz antennas. I'm not sure if this issue is only with XP or perhaps it's the computer's drivers but we run into problems with end users going to a different location and having a very weak signal or nothing at all, yet coverage is fine. I believe the problem is the end user's machine selecting the strongest signal and it I have the feeling that switching bands isn't being done as it should when it's in range. So my question,
Should I split up our 1 SSID and created multiple SSIDs according to the location and include 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz in the SSID name so it's easier to ensure that users are connected to the proper signal? I want to ask if multiple SSIDs would still enable users to freely roam (as long as the ssids are configured) throughout the building without noticing a loss of signal but currently just having 1 SSID isn't really enabling people to freely roam around without connection issues.I don't believe having multiple SSIDs will be useful for the computer's choose their connection any more efficiently but allowing the user to manually see what they're connected to and pick something better according to their location.

I have here a couple of APs with c1130-k9w7-mx.124-25d.JA1 loaded as firmware.
I want to configure them with 2 SSID: 1 encrypted, 1 public. Each should go to its own vlan, and thus should have a trunk towards the switch.
My wireless experience approaches zero however, and I cannot get the APs to even send out an unencrypted public SSID.
The config that is currently on the AP, after trying a lot of things is:
gibbs#show run
Building configuration...
Current configuration : 3272 bytes
!
version 12.4
[Code].....

I need to configure a WAP4410N for use on a small, very simple business network. There should be a corporate WLAN and a guest WLAN. The corporate WLAN should allow anyone connectd to it to access resources on the domain.
In front of the WAP is a cable modem/router and a basic Level 2 (web managed) switch. What do i have to do to segregate the corporate and guest networks.
I thought I would add the corporate WLAN to VLAN1 (assuming the default VLAN in the switch is VLAN1). Then I figured I could create the guest WLAN and assign it to VLAN2 which which will be controlled entirely by the 4410N (DHCP, DNS, etc.) Does this sound like the right way of going about things?

I would like to add an additional antenna to a 1252 LAP but I'm unsure of a few things...
I know this LAP currently has at least a yogi directional antenna (AIR-ANT2410Y-R) and also a ( AIR-ANT2485P-R) connected to it. The access point is in a ceiling so I cannot view the connections but according to this data sheet, { URL } each of the antennas I've specified require 3 per AP. I am only aware of 1 of each being used so not sure why 3 would be required?
Also on my 1252 1 side has 3, 2.4Ghz connections for antennas, TX, TX&RX, and RX. If I want to only use 1 AIR-ANT2410Y-R, would this be connected to the TX&RX port? Do all antennas support transmit and receive or are there some that only support TX and others that only support RX or is this based only how you configure the antennas? On the other side of the access point there are 3, 5Ghz antenna connections.

I am in the process of installing an Aironet 1140 standalone AP. I have not worked with these AP's before. I will be connecting it to one of the PoE ports on the existing ASA 5505. My goal is to have 2 SSID's, one for internal network and one for guest internet only, no access to internal LAN. I want to have the internal wifi clients and the guest clients on seperate IP networks. The internal clients obtain DHCP from the existing server and use the ASA DHCP server for the guest clients. And of course, I would like the ability to manage the AP from the internal network. I am providing copies of my current configs for both the ASA and Aironet.

We typically use the 2602 series AP in lightweight mode, however I have a scenario where we are going to be installing one with the stand-alone software. I understand that we will not be able to utilze certain features that you get with the WLC such as RRM, rogue detection, and clean air.
We do want to utilze both the 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ bands. In order to do this with the 2602 stand-alone AP, will we have to configure 2 separate SSID's? I really do not want to do this to if I do not have to to minimize confusion for clients.

I have a WRT320N, firmware version 1.0.05., Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, and a Hewlett Packard laptop.I would like to utilize both bands on my router at the same time for internet access, so that I can have the one my kids use shut down at a certain time but mine stay up.If not, what's the closest I can get, even if I have to purchase additional items to do so? Do I have to manually turn their band off when I want it off? And can I even have both bands in use at the same time?
I looked at my Cisco online info by access the IP address. I see the Access Restrictions tab. Can I even set usage by specific computer? If so how do I do that?

I just picked up a E4200 last nite and installed it and everything seems to be connecting ok, but I'm just not sure I have the optimal settings. This is my first dual band router.I have a mixture of G and N devices on the network - notebooks, desktop, phones, Wii. etc. What are the best settings for each of the 5 and 2.4 bands? I have read that you want to have the same SSID and encryption keys, so clients can go from one or the other seamlessly. It's mostly the Basic Wireless Settings that I want to get straight. Right now everything is on Mixed and Auto, and I'm not sure that's entirely correct.
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a PCI and USB wireless adapter that works well with this router and provides the best range and throughput? I have both a laptop and desktop in a detached building with no physical cables. I want to ensure these have the best connection possible.

I have just installed the Cisco E2500 router and setup my wireless network.I bought the router hoping it would give me a stronger signal than my old Linksys G 2.4Ghz.Using inSSider I can see my router and unfortunately it looks like both the 2.4Ghz and the 5Ghz are both operating at the same time. . The signal stregth under RSSI is -60 for the 5Ghz and -57 for the 2.4Ghz.Do I need to switch one of these bands off or what do I do to get a stronger signal?....my old Linksys router was at -50.Where does one switch off a band anyway?

Hardware Version : V1
Firmware Version : Build 121225 Rel.37950n
I have low signal range from this WDR4300 router on both bands and especially on 5Ghz i lose my connectivity on just few meters away from the router and on other rooms in my 80m2 apartment, i also own another tp link 740n with only one antenna and the range is better with it almost covers all my apartment. Router has been reset after being updated to latest firmware and tried different configurations but im not satisfied with the signal range. Is there something i can do.

I purchased a new N600 dual band router (2.4 and 5.0 GHz). I set up security to use WPA/WPA2 PSK (AES) on both bands. The devices that can see the 5.0 band could connect without issue, however those devices that can only see the 2.4 band (older devices like the Nintendo Wii, my desktop computer with wireless, and iPhone 4's could not connect). In troubleshooting, I finally disabled security on the 2.4 band and everything connected without issue, but I cant figure out how to successfully enable security on both bands at the same time.

I've tried both from CCA and directly from the Web interface (Wireless:Wireless Network Setup menu). The Add Another button doesn't seem to do anything. I've even tried multiple browser versions.

I have a 4404 with 3 SSID's configured on it. I only want all SSID's to be available on one floor in one building and not on any other AP's in any other building or floor.I thought the way to do it was via AP group but have not had any luck getting that to work. I setup a group for the AP's that I do not want all SSID's and then assigned those AP's to that group. However, I can still see all three SSID's where I only want to see 2 SSID's.

I want to split the usage of the AP so that visitors are on their own wireless connnection and VLAN.We have 2 WAP4410N APs. One AP acts as a repeater for the another AP.They are both in 4.0.4.2 firmware. We are using WPA2 RADIUS authentication, and would like for visitors to use WPA2 PSK. Under Wireless tab, I have 1 SSID, but the other 3 available boxes for SSIDs are greyed out. When I click in them, they will not allow me to type an ID.I watched a video of how to add SSIDs and VLANs, and it looked simple enough. He just clicked in the box and was able to add more IDs.Could my current config be preventing me from adding additional SSIDs?

I am trying to configure WLC 2504 with the following setup:
- three WLAN SSIDs
- management/ap-manager interface on VLAN 10
- guest WLAN on dynamic interface VLAN 20
- main WLAN on dynamic interface VLAN 30
- WLAN for tablet and smartphone devices VLAN 40
At this point switch trunking is configured and three WLANs are mapped to three dynamic different interfaces. I can see all associated APs (which are on the same subnet as management interface on VLAN 10), and can ping each of the APs as well as gateways on L3 switch Catalyst 3750-x. Also, on the WLC interface I see that all WLANs are enabled and SSIDs are set to broadcast, all AP radio is in 'up' mode. DHCPs are configured on management interface and on all dynamic interfaces. L3 switch gateways all have ip helper-address pointing to main DHCP. 'sh vlan' and 'sh int trunk' commands on the connected switches show correct settings.
However, I see absolutely no any SSIDs to connect to on any PC or Mac computer I tested.

The WLC see's my AP and I have all my WLAN and interfaces configured (SSID broadcast is enabled) but I still don't see any SSID coming from the AP.

I have several Aironet 1231 APs most running 12.3(8)JEA software. There are 4 SSIDs on (each in separate VLAN), with only one broadcasting (called pubwifi). The broadcasting one is an open, unencrypted network: [code] After adding another braodcasting SSID (encrypted, separate VLAN), I encountered weird situation: my WiFi clients are unable to connect to pubwifi. It is not showing in the available networks or is showing as an "unknow" network. New encrypted/bradcasting ssid is advertaising just fine.

I am running a WiFi network built on Cisco 1262 APs and Cisco WLC 5508. My APs broadcast two SSIDs, let call them "WiFi_Pay" and "WiFi_Free". I have a problem: when users migrate from "WiFi_Pay" to "WiFi_Free" (not moving, connecting to the same AP), the connection fails. If they try for second time, it is always successful. My task is to ensure that such migrations run smoothly and be successful from the first attempt.

Doing segregation of SSIDs Base on AP , I have the following scenario:
Head Office :
2 SSIDs (HO_WiFi , Guest) , Access Points which are working in connected mode and grouped on the default ap group .
Remote site:
2 SSIDs (Branch_Wifi , Guest) , Access Points working in flex connected mode and locally switching the traffic .
As shown above , I will be having Head Office , and other 20 Remote Sites with Access Points working in Flex connected mode. What is the best way to group AP and segregate SSID base on location. Above Scenario are build base on WLC 5508 and AP 1142.

we want to have full wireless coverage in a big warehouse (120mx90m) and 15 meter Height that will be having big racks (14 meters height) and 2 meter between the racks and the rack itself is 1.5 meter (2 rack back to back), now we will be having scanners and we need to make sure the wireless is covering everywhere.Where is the best place to put the AP, Ceiling? How Many APs per row ? each row will be around 60 meters length.
Is AP 1252 a good choice? The scanners are a/b/g.What i'm thinking of is to put 1 AP per row mounted on the ceiling and antennas facing down because it is hard to mount the APs between the rack because of the automated racking system.

I am configuring a mobile van that is used for a mobile health clinic to drive to several locations and when pulling into an allocated parking spot the van will connect via wireless automatically. I am using autonomous 1252 AP's and am considering either briding or workgroup bridging.
The issue I am encountering is that the AP inside a van is a router that has to do DHCP across the wireless and because the ethernet interface between router and AP in the van never goes down the router does not know to re-DHCP. I remember from way back there was an IOS command to track a serial interface and drop the ethernet if the serial link goes down. Is there an equivalent command for AP's to drop the ethernet interface if the radio interfaces go down?
