Create A Dropbox-like Sync Between My Desktop And Laptop?
Jan 12, 2012
I am looking for a good software solution to create a Dropbox-like sync between my desktop and laptop. In other words, when I modify the files in a particular folder on one computer I want the changes to be automatically synced to the local disk on the other computer (I don't want to have to be accessing my files from a network share -- I want local access to them once downloaded). If it would be easier to set something like this up through a server, I do have an old computer lying around that could be re-purposed for such a task.

My desktop, which runs on Vista, is connected to the internet via a cable modem. I am trying to get my laptop, which runs on Windows 7, to connect to the same network without a router via the use of an Ad-Hoc network.
I have created the Ad-Hoc network on my desktop and have successfully connected to it through my laptop. The problem is that although I am connected to the Ad-Hoc network on the laptop I cant connect to the internet. It simply says Access Type: No Internet Access. I have internet sharing on and don't know what to do to successfully connect to the internet via the laptop. When I diagnose the connection it says "The network adapter does not have a valid IP configuration" I have both pcs set to "Obtain IPv6/v4 addresses automatically" and dont know what else to do.

I'd like to sync my laptop to my pc. My pc is connected to the inet via modem, and my laptop through the wifi device connected to the top of the modem. Is it possible to sync the two? I'd like to be able to access both my pc (& my external hard drive connected to my pc) from my laptop. From what I've read, it's not possible unless both computers are on a wireless connection. I'm using Windows XP on my pc, and Windows 7 on my laptop.

I've recently bought a wdtv live streamer to play all my music and videos.
Firstly, my setup. Wdtv live connected via USB3 to 1tb wd elements hdd. Also connected via rj45 to router. Laptop on same network, but wireless.
My first question concerns transfer rates. When sending any kind of media to the networked drive from my laptop, I'm only getting transfer speeds of about. 2 mb/s. I thought I would get much more than this as when the wdtv streams to my iPad, it will need faster speeds than this.
The second question is just to make my life easier. Is there any way I can set up folders on my laptop to automatically sync with a chosen folder on the networked hdd? Just to save any effort on my part really
What I want is if I import a cd using iTunes into my library, it will automatically see it and copy it across to the hdd so I can play it over the network.
As an aside, would it be easier to store my whole iTunes library just on the networked drive?

My team are using shared folders on dropbox, but we are having issues where some of the shared files will not appear for some users.I've created a shared folder, and all users have accepted invitations to the folder, but it will not appear in one user's dropbox (neither desktop or in web browser), but it does appear in other user's dropbox.I'm having this issue with several shared folders. The dropbox folder is being shared between 1 pc and 2 macs.I've tried re-inviting & clearing the dropbox cache to no success.

I think that's what I want to do. I have an HP desktop with vista and cable high speed modem and a linkys attached to it for wireless. My laptop is a toshiba with wireless running windows 7 and I use it upstairs wireless to connect to the net. There are times I need a file from the desktop and I have to go down and put it on memory stick to copy it over. Is there any way I can access the desktop from the laptop without having to do that? Would need step by step instructions to set it up if it can be done with 2 different operating systems.

I have a desktop and a laptop. I can't get wireless or a wired connection to the router so I need to use my laptop to connect to the internet in the short term. I have connected to the computers using an ethernet cable. I can get to local fine but no internet.
I have attempted to bridge the two connection but when I click on resolve it says there is an IP conflict. I can't see where.
I have also tried ICS but it keeps saying there was an error when attempting to enable it although I did manage to allow it to connect at one point before it reverted back to not working it still wouldn't allow the desktop internet access. All services are running.
IP config without ICS or bridging:

Share the internet from my laptop to my desktop. I see that others have posted on this subject before but I have been unsuccessful so far. Maybe one of you can point out what is wrong (my guess is its something simple).I have:
*connected the 2 PCs with a Ethernet cable
*I can successfully share/transfer files between the 2 PCs
*When I found out the internet wasn't sharing, I manually changed the setting of the network adapter (IPv4) with the right ip/subnet
*I was unable to ping the two computer before I changed the settings of the network adapter.Even with being able to ping, the laptop still wouldn't let me share the internet.
*I have put everything back (all settings) that I changed to kind of start new.My laptop runs Windows 8 and my desktop runs Windows 7. [code]

OK, so I have a wireless/wifi connection at home. Problem is, the router is located in the bedroom (it's a rental house, and wired kinda odd). I have my desktop on a table in the kitchen.
I want to connect my Desktop to my Laptop....which I can do with an ethernet cable, but I don't know how to let them share the wireless/wifi connection. How to connect to the internet on my Desktop through the Laptop?

I have two computers, a laptop and a desktop. Both are running Win7 64 bit.My laptop's wireless card went kabloom and I'm too broke to afford a wireless adapter for my laptop. So I have the next best thing, connect the desktop to the laptop and share my desktop's internet connection with. But of course, it's not that simple. The problem is that the laptop isn't able to connect to the internet. I have shared my desktop's internet to my laptop before using the same cable and everything and it used to work, but now it doesn't.Now comes the 'weird' part. I reversed the order, or I shared my laptop's wireless connection with my desktop. Although slow and choppy, it did work and I was able to access the internet from my desktop using a connection to my laptop with a cable.

The setup:Desktop PC Win 7 home to Linksys router to ModemLaptop PC Win 7 home wifi to linksys router etcTwo external HDD, USB, (Mybook) connected to the Desktop.I've been able to use the setting to make a Home network, same workgroup name, basically set it up so that I can use the laptop to access the "libraries" on my desktop like the docs, photos, etc. Now, my plan was to be able to use that laptop to access the USB HDD connected to the desktop. I tried using the fhile sharing wizard, (right clicking and "include in library" and a link does appear. I try right clicking and "share with homegroup" in the libraries tree.I get an error: "The File Sharing Wizard can't share the root of a drive"With some research, I've set the HDD sharing on (checked the "share this folder" box) and under Security set it to "everyone".When I get to the laptop, I see the link to My Book in Homegroup. But there's nothing in it.
