Home Network :: Setting Up A Direct Link Between 2 PCs For File Transfer

Mar 28, 2012

I have been trying to get this setup for 2 days now and so far NADA.....

Router: Linksys E3000 - below is a list of all devices connected (hardwired T568B) to the 4 ports with a laptop connected via wireless

1. Main PC - motherboard: ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z (dual GB LAN ports)
2. Media Server - motherboard: MSI Z68A-GD80 (dual GB LAN ports)
3. Test Bench AMD PC
4. WD TV Live

Currently: I have all 3 computers running Windows 7 and connected to a Homegroup. I have given the correct permissions to enable sharing of files between each of the 3 computers and can transfer files from one PC to the next w/o any issues.

Desired: I want to connect my Main PC and Media Sever with a crossover cable using the 2nd LAN port on each motherboard, so that I don't have to go through the router to transfer data to and from these 2 PCs. I will have each PC also connected to the Linksys E3000 router via the 1st LAN port on each motherboard to supply the internet connection, so I am also not trying to "share" an internet connection between these 2 PCs. Basically, I want to run my home network through the Linksys E3000 and then a 2nd network for the 2 PCs using the crossover cable.

Current Problem: I disconnected the straight-through cables from the router to each computer from the 1st LAN port. I then connected the crossover cable from the Main PC to the Media Server and setup a new Home network in the Network and Sharing Center in Windows 7. Everything worked and I could transfer data to and from each these 2 PCs, so i know I wired the crossover cable correctly. Then I reconnected the straight-through cables coming from the router to the 1st LAN ports of each mobo, thinking that each PC would auto-detect the internet connection and reacquire my existing home network, enabling an internet connection again. However, this did not happen.

[URL] I also followed this how-to guide on microsoft.com, but when I get to Step 3 where it says that an "Unidentified network icon" will aprear in the Network and Sharing Center, it does not!

From Googling, reading, and troubleshooting I believe I know 2 things:

1. All of the hardware is functioning properly - when the straight-through cables from the router are disconnected, the 2 PCs are networked through the crossover cable and files can be transferred.

2. The problem is with Windows 7 somewhere - I think?

D-Link DIR-615 :: Network File Transfer Speed

Feb 13, 2011

url...I have 2 PC's connected to a DIR-615 through 802.11n and each have a DWA-130 802.11n adapter. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on both computers. The specs of both systems are very high.I only have these 2 computers on wireless right now. Their signal is full strength, they are less than 10 feet away from the router.I am getting 2.0 MB/s when transferring files between them and although I am not expecting to get 17MB/s, but I should be getting better speed than 2 MB/s.Hard drive specs are Crucial C300 SATA 6.0, WD Caviar Blue SATA 3.0, and WD Caviar Green SATA 3.0. My Green drive reads/writes at 100MB/s, My Blue 125MB/s, and My SSD 225MB/s. So, those are not the bottleneck. Is there any other settings I can try? I have not messed with my DWA-130 settings nor have I messed with Windows.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Extremely Slow LAN File Transfer (16KB/s)?

Jun 27, 2011

I recently switched from an older 10/100 linksys to this gigabit router from D-Link.  However, when I try to transfer files from one computer to another on the LAN, the file transfers are ridiculously low, right around 16KB/s.  I have CAT6 cable for all connections, but am baffled by what could cause such a slow speed.  I'm trying to transfer files from my desktop (win7) to my server (Windows Home Server 2011).

Setting Up A Home Computer As A File Server Connected To The Motorola Router?

Jan 12, 2012

I have a network that is currently set up in the following way:Modem -> vonage Motorola router -> wireless router Most computers are hard wired to the Motorola router. Some other ones connect via the linkseys wireless router. All computers are able to connect to the Internet. The problem I have is that I will be setting up a home computer as a file server connected to the Motorola router. The network acts as though it is two meaning that computers on one router can't see computers on the other router. What steps should I take in order to make all computers accessible through both routers. When I type 192.168.1.1 from a computer on the Motorola router, I get nothing, when I type in my actual ip address, I get the Motorola router. When I type in 192.168.1.1 from a linkseys connected computer, I get access to the linkseys router.

Slow File Transfer Over Wireless Network

Apr 22, 2012

I have a wireless network with 2 desktop hooked up wired, and one laptop that's wireless. Accessing files on the desktop with xp installed is quick and transfers files at around 5-7mb/s. When I connect to my main pc with windows 7 on it, file transfer is EXTREMELY slow and almost always stutters and freezes. I've tried removing the drive from 'shared' and then adding it again, reinstalling my ethernet driver, swapping ethernet ports on the back of my router, and resetting it altogether. Still a slow transfer speed.I use workgroup all around, for xp and for 7.

Home Network :: Playing MPEG-2 File In Webpage From Home Server?

Dec 20, 2012

I have setup a webserver on my home PC and I have forwarded port 80 on my router to the IP adress of the PC that is running the web server. The web server is working great; I can get to my web pages from outside of my home by going to http://MyIpAddress/Anyway, the problem is with the Windows Media Player plugin I'm using. I want to embed 6GB MPEG-2 videos into my web pages. I have some videos on my PC and I want to be able to watch them remotely by connecting into my web page. It works fine when I'm at home; other PCs can connect and play the videos no problem. The problem is when I'm at work. When I'm at work, I go to my web page (via my IP address in a web browser) and the Media Player plugin says "Connecting" for a minute, then it says Ready, but the video will not play. I tried using a smaller, AVI file (680 MB) instead to see if the problem was streaming such a large file, but the video still would not play.Do I need to foward more ports on my router so that Windows Media Player can connect back and get the information it needs?

Linksys Wireless Router :: E4200 Wifi Network - Slow File Transfer Speed

Mar 24, 2012

I have recently purchased a Cisco E4200 to replace my D-LINK DIR-655, which I thought was defective because I was getting slow wirless file transfer speed, regardless of setting, location and client.Using the E4200, when I transfer a file from a PC to another, both connected at 300mb on the 2.4ghz band, the file transfer rate reported by windows 7 and networx is from 2MB/s to 3.5MB/s.  I think those transfer rates are not acceptable.  Is that a good assumption ? I would expect something in the range of 10MB/s (which is what I get with a cheap dlink router, wired)

I also had great difficulty finding a channel.  I had to try them all one-by-one as the auto channel selection made my PCs connect at 130mb.The E4200 is setup as follows:

-WPA-Personal
-Channel 5
-802.11n only

I have tried 3 different computers with different network adapters and they all underperform (IMO..).There are no other wireless networks in my area.I also took the E4200 to my office which is very crowed.  Every single channel is occupied by several wireless networks.  I get a file transfer speed PC to PC of about 2MB.I basically could have kept my DIR-655 as the speeds are identical.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Setting Up File Sharing Between Computers On WLAN

Jan 8, 2011

When I was using my Linksys router, I had no difficulties setting up Windows File Sharing on my computers but since I upgraded to the DIR-655, file sharing have hardly worked.  Sometimes I could get one of the computers access files on another, but not the other away around.  Most of the time, none of the computers have access to the files on any of the other computers.  Two of the computers run Windows XP and another one runs Windows Vista.  All computers are on the same workgroup and able to connect to the internet through the router.  When calling D-Link tech support, I am told that they dont support file sharing and that I had to contact each computer's manufacture's tech support on the instructions on setting up the file sharing (each computer is from a different manufacture).  One of the tech supports did drop the slight hint that I needed to recreate the home network, but when I tried to do that, all I could find is the settings to connect to the router (which I had set up when I installed the new router) and to enable file sharing (which is already done) and to assign the workgroup, which they were all are already assigned to the same group.

Home Network To Transfer Files From One Computer To Next

Feb 12, 2012

I love sharing on my home network to transfer files from one computer to the next. However, I will soon have tenants in my house sharing my network ...so they can use my Wi-Fi to get on the internet.I need a solution to give them access to the internet without losing my own network sharing ability.I do not want them accessing my files.I have Windows XP home and a Dlink WBR-2310 router. As I see it, I need to either upgrade to a router with a Guest Zone/Access feature ...OR..upgrade to Windows 7(?) to give myself more networking options (i.e. file sharing where I select the users or set a password). Currently the XP permissions are too general.

Max 1mb Transfer Rate On Windows 7 Home Network?

May 11, 2012

We have a small home office with three computers, two new comps with win7 64 and an old comp running Vista32. Up until last week, the two 7's accessed files on the vista machine via a public folder, and everything was peachy, speed-wise. Trashed the vista this week and replaced it with a new desktop running win7 64. I backed up the old comp's files on the new comp, set up the new win7 home network, and everything went to hell. Both of the 'old' win7 machines can access files on the new, but the speeds are unbearable. It takes, literally, over 10 minutes for Accubid to load (accessing files on the new desktop), whereas it was pretty much immediate before. Quickbooks freezes for a minute and a half before it finally connects. A 60mb PDF file takes two minutes to copy. It even hiccups when I save a freakin' Word document. After some research I found that window's new home sharing network kinda sucks, so I turned it off on all machines and mapped network drives. Nothing.turn off remote differential compression, so I turned it off on all machines. Nothing. I disabled flow control on all machines. Nothing. The weirdest thing I did - I disabled auto-tuning and restarted all computers. I then opened Accubid and it opened immediately! I restarted the program 6 or 7 times, and each time it came up within seconds. I was ecstatic. Then my boss came in 5 minutes later and I opened Accubid to show him I finally fixed it. It took 10 minutes to load again, and I haven't been able to repeat whatever I had done since.

My ISP is ATT.
Modem - D-Link DSL 520B
Router - Netgear WNDR3800

Network is wired. Again, access to internet is blazing. Access to the computer 6 feet away from me is not.

But that software makes it a bit harder to send back and for whenever i feel like it, and although sometime i would hit speeds 5 times faster than with the previously mentioned software (about 12MB/s) , those speeds were not constant. It would be slow (around 1MB/s) and then spike up, and then go back down, and repeat in that fashion

D-Link DCS Network Camera :: 2130 Can't Handle Direct Sunlight?

May 13, 2013

I just bought a DCS-2130 for outdoor use (city landscape through my window in the nineteenth floor), and I'm trying to get it work during the daylight, but I'm having some problems. It seems like this camera can't handle direct sunlight, and in these situations the image gets blurry, even when I set the exposure to auto with max of 0dB in setup menu. Simply there's nothing I can do in this options menu to solve this problem. As the day passes by (and the sunlight gets weaker), the image gets better 'til the night, when it's perfect. What I need to know is if there is any way to setup it properly for daylight use. Is there possible to setup these exposure parameteres some other way, like editing an .ini file or something like that? Or this expensive camera simply can't handle this?

D-Link DIR-655 :: Setting Up AppleTV Or ITunes Home Share

Mar 2, 2011

If you can't home share on iTunes between Computers or AppleTV, try turning multicast on

1) login to router
2) Go to Advanced tab
3) Select Advanced Networking on Left hand column
4) Select checkbox to enable multicast streams
5) Save the changes

In order to get all my machines working, I also had to enable multicast streams on my network extender as well.  The IP address for the network extender is 192.168.0.50 or type in DLINKAP in the URL bar and follow the relevant instructions for your model number.

Please note if you use a software firewall on your PC or Mac, you may need to also free up TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353.  However there are plenty of support articles at Apple / Norton / Microsoft / etc... on how to do this for your relevant firewall..

Home Network :: Samba User Different File Path

Mar 5, 2011

I run a home private server on Centos 5.5 I believe. A while ago, a surge destroyed a different computer with pictures on it that my parents would like to access. The hard drive itself is just fine, and I've backed up those files on an external hard drive. What I would like to do is allow my parents to access them through Samba. Samba has already been in long time use, but it is configured to only allow access in a jail inside each user's home folder on the root hard drive. I have a suitable hard drive already formatted and mounted that can fit all the pictures that they wish to have access too. What I'd like to do, is change the path that one of my users use to the mounted hard drive.

Home Network :: Setting Up A VPN

Jun 17, 2011

I want to setup a VPN, probally more just for the experiance and to learn how to etc, but i also print remotely and view cameras remotely etc and i though it might be safer then port forwarding hundreds of different ports.First question, would it be better or safer to set it up in Windows XP or windows Server as i would have to purchase windows server. I have XP and windows 7. and, what exactly is a VPN. I have done some reading up, but was woundering how exacly i would for instance, remotely view my DVR (cameras) over a VPN. Also, i want the server to be a remote HDD to store and access all data remotely, Backing up etc. This i think VPN is more made for right? And, i will need a server (computer running at all times) to setup a VPN right? as where the router is always on and accessable. I can acheive this and i think this is what i need.So there it is, im new to this side of things done about all i can with the old router and looking at extending my knowledge. Also i wouldnt mind it being SAFE.

Setting Up Home LAN Network?

Jun 28, 2011

(i have 2 PCs (1 desktop and 1 laptop) both running Windows XP connected to my modem/router. the desktop is connected through a wireless adapter, and the laptop is connected directly using an ethernet cable. i have run Windows "Network Setup Wizard" on both PCs and they are part of the same workgroup with File and Printer Sharing enabled. this is as far as I've gone in setting up my LAN and everything works fine. i am able to see both PCs under My Network Neighbourhood and can access files from either PC just fine. both PCs are also able to ping each other by IP address and comptuer name.the problem is this only lasts temporarily. for some reason, after a random amount of time (anywhere between 1 hour to a few days) the desktop will "drop off" from My Network Neighborhood on the laptop. when i try to click on the desktop or workgroup in Network Neighbourhood i suddenly get the error "You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have permissions. The network Path was not found." after this happens i am no longer able to ping the desktop from the laptop either by the IP address or computer name.however I am still able to ping the laptop from the desktop by IP address and computer name, although in Network Neighbourhood the laptop can no longer be seen as part of the workgroup. I am still able access the laptop and its files from the desktop using the \*computer name* command and this will bring up the laptop name again in Network Neighbourhood.one more thing i noticed is, once I've pinged the laptop from the desktop i found that i can again ping the desktop from the laptop, but only with the IP address. If I try to ping the desktop by computer name it still times out. oweer, this also lasts temporarily... after a while, the laptop is also not able to ping the desktop IP address again.the only solution so far is to restart the router. once the router restarts and both PCs reconnect to it, then the LAN is working fine again... that is, until the problem above starts up once again! cry.gifmy modem/router model is D-Link DSL-2640B.some additional info:

- i've assigned static IPs to both PCs so they always have the same IP address from the router.

- i've tried disabling the built-in Windows firewall on both PCs but the problem remains.

- i do not have any other anti-virus or firewall programs installed.

- i've disabled "Computer Browser" service on the laptop so that the desktop is always the Master Browser.

Home Network :: Get Windows 7 Laptop To File Share With XP Desktops?

Sep 26, 2011

I've recently bought a laptop with Windows 7 and would like to be able to connect to my existing home network which comprises 2 desktop PCs connected via a Dlink wireless N router which is acting as a WAP to my Billion non-wireless router (which the two desktop PCs are connected). ie the two desktops are connected via wire to the Billion. The DLink is just there to provide wireless for my laptop (and Ipod)

The first day I setup the new laptop it seemed to recognise the C drive and G drive on my desktop (which I had set to 'share'). i was able to do file transfers.

However, the next day, and since then, the C and G drives don't show up on when I click 'network' on my Laptop's Win Explorer... They did reappear once after I refreshed the Win Explorer several times, but that trick didn't work again

Internet is working fine on all computers. Just would like to be able to share files across the 3 machines...

I've experimented on the laptop with setting as 'public', 'home' and 'work' but didn't have any luck.
