Home Network :: Playing MPEG-2 File In Webpage From Home Server?

Dec 20, 2012

I have setup a webserver on my home PC and I have forwarded port 80 on my router to the IP adress of the PC that is running the web server. The web server is working great; I can get to my web pages from outside of my home by going to http://MyIpAddress/Anyway, the problem is with the Windows Media Player plugin I'm using. I want to embed 6GB MPEG-2 videos into my web pages. I have some videos on my PC and I want to be able to watch them remotely by connecting into my web page. It works fine when I'm at home; other PCs can connect and play the videos no problem. The problem is when I'm at work. When I'm at work, I go to my web page (via my IP address in a web browser) and the Media Player plugin says "Connecting" for a minute, then it says Ready, but the video will not play. I tried using a smaller, AVI file (680 MB) instead to see if the problem was streaming such a large file, but the video still would not play.Do I need to foward more ports on my router so that Windows Media Player can connect back and get the information it needs?

Home Network :: How To Use A Network Connection As A Local Host

Nov 1, 2012

There is a device which is connected to the PC via Lan. I have an exe file which is supposed to get connected to that device and perform some operations. However, the problem is, the exe file tries to connect to the local host ip address 127.0.0.1 and i cant change the ip since it's been coded. So, I'm wondering if i can use the device connection (which already has a different ip like 169....) as a local host connection. So whenever it tries to connect to the loopback 127... it automatically connects to the external device.

At the moment, I can only see the desktop and remotely control it. Multiple connections are accepted but all see the same desktop

Home Network :: Samba User Different File Path

Mar 5, 2011

I run a home private server on Centos 5.5 I believe. A while ago, a surge destroyed a different computer with pictures on it that my parents would like to access. The hard drive itself is just fine, and I've backed up those files on an external hard drive. What I would like to do is allow my parents to access them through Samba. Samba has already been in long time use, but it is configured to only allow access in a jail inside each user's home folder on the root hard drive. I have a suitable hard drive already formatted and mounted that can fit all the pictures that they wish to have access too. What I'd like to do, is change the path that one of my users use to the mounted hard drive.

Home Network :: Get Windows 7 Laptop To File Share With XP Desktops?

Sep 26, 2011

I've recently bought a laptop with Windows 7 and would like to be able to connect to my existing home network which comprises 2 desktop PCs connected via a Dlink wireless N router which is acting as a WAP to my Billion non-wireless router (which the two desktop PCs are connected). ie the two desktops are connected via wire to the Billion. The DLink is just there to provide wireless for my laptop (and Ipod)

The first day I setup the new laptop it seemed to recognise the C drive and G drive on my desktop (which I had set to 'share'). i was able to do file transfers.

However, the next day, and since then, the C and G drives don't show up on when I click 'network' on my Laptop's Win Explorer... They did reappear once after I refreshed the Win Explorer several times, but that trick didn't work again

Internet is working fine on all computers. Just would like to be able to share files across the 3 machines...

I've experimented on the laptop with setting as 'public', 'home' and 'work' but didn't have any luck.

Home Network :: Setting Up A Direct Link Between 2 PCs For File Transfer

Mar 28, 2012

I have been trying to get this setup for 2 days now and so far NADA.....

Router: Linksys E3000 - below is a list of all devices connected (hardwired T568B) to the 4 ports with a laptop connected via wireless

1. Main PC - motherboard: ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z (dual GB LAN ports)
2. Media Server - motherboard: MSI Z68A-GD80 (dual GB LAN ports)
3. Test Bench AMD PC
4. WD TV Live

Currently: I have all 3 computers running Windows 7 and connected to a Homegroup. I have given the correct permissions to enable sharing of files between each of the 3 computers and can transfer files from one PC to the next w/o any issues.

Desired: I want to connect my Main PC and Media Sever with a crossover cable using the 2nd LAN port on each motherboard, so that I don't have to go through the router to transfer data to and from these 2 PCs. I will have each PC also connected to the Linksys E3000 router via the 1st LAN port on each motherboard to supply the internet connection, so I am also not trying to "share" an internet connection between these 2 PCs. Basically, I want to run my home network through the Linksys E3000 and then a 2nd network for the 2 PCs using the crossover cable.

Current Problem: I disconnected the straight-through cables from the router to each computer from the 1st LAN port. I then connected the crossover cable from the Main PC to the Media Server and setup a new Home network in the Network and Sharing Center in Windows 7. Everything worked and I could transfer data to and from each these 2 PCs, so i know I wired the crossover cable correctly. Then I reconnected the straight-through cables coming from the router to the 1st LAN ports of each mobo, thinking that each PC would auto-detect the internet connection and reacquire my existing home network, enabling an internet connection again. However, this did not happen.

[URL] I also followed this how-to guide on microsoft.com, but when I get to Step 3 where it says that an "Unidentified network icon" will aprear in the Network and Sharing Center, it does not!

From Googling, reading, and troubleshooting I believe I know 2 things:

1. All of the hardware is functioning properly - when the straight-through cables from the router are disconnected, the 2 PCs are networked through the crossover cable and files can be transferred.

2. The problem is with Windows 7 somewhere - I think?

Adding DNS Without Modifying The Host File

Jan 19, 2012

Windows 7 OS

I can ping and connect to servers by IP address from my workstation. However, Sys Admin wants everyone to use the DNS name instead. The only way I know to add DNS names is to modify the host file on the workstation. Sys Admin has forbidden users from modifying their host files.

How else can I map these IP addresses to DNS on a Windows 7 machine?

I have tried modifying the domain, thinking I can use the DNS entries on the domain server. Did not work. If this should be working maybe I'm not using the right domain? Any way to determine what domain to use?

I am decent in using command line, feel free to give non-GUI based answers.

Notes:
- I do know how to modify host files, including the Windows 7 work-around for having this locked out. But it's a "rule" by the Sys Admin not to do it. So I'm trying to adhere to the policy

- Sadly, asking the Sys Admin for the alternative tactic is not an option. Lame but true.

- I have scoured the internet for info on this issue. Everything I find either involves modifying files or enabling services on the server, or modifying the host file on the workstation. Even looking at the server settings is out (I don't have access).

Proxy Server / Host File - Redirect Traffic

Feb 16, 2012

So I have a proxy server in my home that all the computers use to access the internet (XP Pro). I edited the host file on the proxy to redirect traffic for various reasons (ad blocking, etc.) But I have noticed that it doesn't seem to affect the computers that use the proxy. For example one entry in the host file could be 127.0.0.1 abc123.com so that abc123.com would loopback to the localhost. For some reason this isn't working. Is there anyway to get this to work without changing the host file on each individual computer?

Linksys Cable / DSL :: Wag325N Down After Editing Host File

Oct 12, 2011

I'm using the Linksys Wag325N which always served me well. I've always been able to get my VPN to my workplace going. Until now. I've edited a hostfile on my mac (etc/ppp/ip-up) to get a route setup to be able to use internet and the vpn at the same time. But now the vpn would work no more. Why do i think that it is a router problem? Because other computers in my home network aren't able to establish the vpn they used to work with for a long time.

1. is it possible that my /etc/ppp/ip-up on my computer messes up the router?

2. Is there a way to completely reset my router? Tried "restore to factory settings" which did not work. Is there a "harder" reset?

Setting Up A Home Computer As A File Server Connected To The Motorola Router?

I have a network that is currently set up in the following way:Modem -> vonage Motorola router -> wireless router Most computers are hard wired to the Motorola router. Some other ones connect via the linkseys wireless router. All computers are able to connect to the Internet. The problem I have is that I will be setting up a home computer as a file server connected to the Motorola router. The network acts as though it is two meaning that computers on one router can't see computers on the other router. What steps should I take in order to make all computers accessible through both routers. When I type 192.168.1.1 from a computer on the Motorola router, I get nothing, when I type in my actual ip address, I get the Motorola router. When I type in 192.168.1.1 from a linkseys connected computer, I get access to the linkseys router.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E4200 Wifi Network - Slow File Transfer Speed

Mar 24, 2012

I have recently purchased a Cisco E4200 to replace my D-LINK DIR-655, which I thought was defective because I was getting slow wirless file transfer speed, regardless of setting, location and client.Using the E4200, when I transfer a file from a PC to another, both connected at 300mb on the 2.4ghz band, the file transfer rate reported by windows 7 and networx is from 2MB/s to 3.5MB/s.  I think those transfer rates are not acceptable.  Is that a good assumption ? I would expect something in the range of 10MB/s (which is what I get with a cheap dlink router, wired)

I also had great difficulty finding a channel.  I had to try them all one-by-one as the auto channel selection made my PCs connect at 130mb.The E4200 is setup as follows:

-WPA-Personal
-Channel 5
-802.11n only

I have tried 3 different computers with different network adapters and they all underperform (IMO..).There are no other wireless networks in my area.I also took the E4200 to my office which is very crowed.  Every single channel is occupied by several wireless networks.  I get a file transfer speed PC to PC of about 2MB.I basically could have kept my DIR-655 as the speeds are identical.

Moving Wireless Network Printer From One Host PC To Another?

Aug 27, 2012

I had a home network with 2 laptops (one XP and one Vista) and 1 desktop (XP) configured through a Lynksys wireless router. There was already a Canon wireless network printer (with the Vista laptop set up as the "host" pc). This Vista laptop had to be on in order to print from any of the other 2 computers on the network. I then added another laptop (this one with Windows 7 64-bit OS) to the same home network (using workgroup), and I can print wirelessly from it in the same way (the older Vista laptop has to be on). The Vista laptop is hardly ever used since adding the new Win 7, and I would like to be able to print without having the Vista laptop on. How would I go about this? Do I have to delete the printer from the Vista laptop and re-install on the Win 7? It seems like there should be a way to let the router be the "print server," but I have no idea how to accomplish this. The WLAN settings on the printer all indicate the proper router settings from the initial setup. The printer is a Canon MX860.

Preventing File Sharing On A Home Group?

Oct 8, 2012

Home Group on Windows 7. I have added a room mate to my home group (just two of us in group). I don't want either of us to be able to view or share files, folders, etc. I think I've done everything on my end: turned off Network Discovery; turned off file and printer sharing; turned off Public Folder sharing. Also turned off automatic file/printer sharing in Norton firewall.

1) do I need to do anything else, and;

2) what does room mate have to do on his computer (if anything)?

I've spent quite a bit of time trying to figure this out on my own but somehow I don't feel quite sure that all my files/folders are not viewable by anyone else.

Home Network :: Add Third Wireless Router To Equation?

Feb 16, 2011

We have adsl and the current system setup is as follows:

I have a plain dlink adsl modem connected as my starting point in bridged mode. This is to allow different users to connect with their own adsl isp user accounts. Then after that I have a linksys wireless router that is connected to it via a switch on an available port on both the switch and linksys router. We can all access the wireless fine, access the wired PCs, printers, etc.My problem is I want to add a third wireless router to the equation that will dial a single account and will be used primarily for our mobile phones and guests. So, always on, wireless connection to an always connected adsl line.

I got everything working up to a point. When I connected my new wireless router via its wan port,it worked as expected.I had enabled DHCP on it and also assigned a static ip for itself in the same class as the rest of the network. Any device connected to that wireless network can access the internet and the other devices connected to the same network. However, when I try to access the rest of the network,I get a host unreachable error on ping and when trying to access it directly via ip addresses.I then disabled the dhcp on it and thought that my primary dhcp (the linksys) would assign the devices, but that also did not work. I am sure that if I had connected the router via one of its normal lan ports it could have worked, but then I can't set it up for PPPoE.
