Accessing Shares On Other Domain

Mar 14, 2012

Have a school which is split into 2 domains (and 2 different subnets). A logged in windows domain user from domain A needs to access a windows share on domain B. So I made a bat file on the pc in domain A to map a drive to the share on domain B, using the net use command but specifying login credentials of a domain user from domain B.The pc on domain A has it's hosts file edited so it can access the server on domain B which the share is on, ping and everything to this server works fine.I created a user in domain B with the corresponding login details as in the batch file, same un and pwd, it didn't work. If I specify the un and pwd in the batch file as the domain admin account on domain B, it works fine everytime. I'm pretty sure it's not a premissions thing as I have given the inital user that I specified in the batch file full control to the share permissions and security permissions on the share in question, it still wouldn't work.

All I can think of, but can't put into good technical words, is that this user I am specifying in the batch file not only needs to have access to the share itself but has to enter the other domain as well, would there be some protocol or something in which it does not have permissions to use effictively but the domain admin clearly does as it works fine for domain admin?

Forward Or Redirect From IP To Domain Name URL?

Oct 15, 2012

What the most cost and time effective way to have an ip request return with another ip address from outside the WAN of the router.Specifically want to have an application request for example 192.168.1.121 and have 173.194.43.41 respond and communicate with the application instead. To make it a bit more interesting I'd like actually to set a table or config file to point to a domain name (url) which gets resolved as an ip address. (Port independent)To get a better understanding:one example might be typing in 192.168.1.121 in a browser and googles search engine comes up on the browser.another example might be typing in 192.168.1.121 in an ftp client and it hooks to an ftp server on the other side of the world which resolves to [URL]. I was looking at openwrt and tomato a little but I don't think I have such a complete grasp on how to do it in general. Being that it seems they are 2 different layers of the network model, I was told it can't be done but I don't know if I can believe that yet. Either by third party software or reprogramming the router or adding another device to the network.

Cannot Obtain Domain Controller Name

Jun 19, 2011

Type: Error

EventID: 1054

Description: Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Group Policy processing aborted.

Dad's work laptop (XP) will no longer connect to any wifi at all. I removed the Intel PRO/set wireless utility so it would default to windows, enabled the Wireless Zero Config. It will acknowledge the network, attempt to get an IP address from the network for 1 minute, then it rotates down to the next network SSID in queue (I have 3 SSID's in our house). When it reaches the end, it just goes back to the "Windows is not connected to any wireless networks" message.

NT4 Domain Controller Lost?

Mar 1, 2011

In 2004 I had a small home network of an NT4 domain controller with a 98 client and an XP client and an NT4 workstation laptop.ll was fine with the NT4 server providing a central store and print queue for a networked laser.Over time the laptop has been replaced with a Win7 (which will access the files but really doesn't the NT4 domain.) The Win98 has died and now finally the NT4 sever has gone too.I intend to revert now to a workgroup type set-up and forget about domains (I don't need it really) My problem is if I remove my XP machine from the domain I loose all the program menu, shortcuts desktop etc. which are stored under the domain user name login. Can I retrieve these or at least look at them so I can set up the local XP administrator account with all my familiar stuff.

What Does 192.168.1.1 Domain Mean In Netstat Command

Sep 28, 2011

I was using command prompt and typed in netstat -a to see opened ports on my XP computer. Then I found a weird result I have never seen it before.

It was Proto local address Foreign address state
TCP myXP computernameort# 192.168.1.1:domain Fin_Wait_2

What does this 192.168.1.1:domain mean? I believe 192.168.1.1 is my gateway router, but why it says :domain? few minutes later, I typed netstat -a in the command prompt to check it again, but it wasn't there anymore. does this mean my computer is on a domain network or something? As far as I checked, my computer doesn't seem to be on a domain network, but I just don't know what it means.

DSCP Domain Name And Password

Jul 26, 2012

I work in a manufacturing firm where we have offices at 3 different places say A,B and C. Our ERP server is at our original unit A from where we accessed it at B and C through remote desktop application till now. But now we have hired cloud services to connect to our main ERP server. We are in the process of installing the cloud application on our server at B during which we are encountering a problem. The cloud service provider is asking for domain name and password for the DSCP server based at the orignal unit (A) which no one in the company seems to have any idea about. Our IT guy at A has resigned and has not been replaced. Our IT guy at B is inexperienced and just following the instructions of service provider who is stuck at DSCP domain name and ID. How can I know the domain name and password of DSCP server so that the process moves on?

Cisco :: DMZ Connectivity To Domain Controller / AD

Feb 16, 2012

We relocated several servers to our DMZ and, without a domain controller in the DMZ (we plan to put a RODC in the DMZ later when we mvoe to Windows Server 2008), i punch through the standard recommended TCP ports. ports 88,135, 389, 53, etc.) to the internal network located DC. I am double hopping to the DC (I hope thast doesn't matter) as the DMZ located web server communicates to another IP address in the same DMZ network and then I NAT that address to the internal IP address of the DC. Everything seems to be working for the servers we moved to the DMZ but i think i don't have all the necessary TCP/UDP ports punched through because we have found that logging into the DMZ servers is taking an extended amount of time, sitting on the “applying settings” screen. For 2-34 minutes. Also, we noticed that our applciations fols have to now add the fully qualified domain names when making calls to servers that just needed the domain name. When i open the access-list up completely without opening specific TCP/UDP ports, the issue is resolved.

Changed Domain For Workgroup / Can't Log Into User

Jan 29, 2012

We have a computer running Windows 2000 Pro that used to connect to a domain at work. Upon bootup, it asks for the user/password.Yesterday we tried to connect it to a little home network by changing the domain to a workgroup with a different name (network name that i used at home) as well. Now when it boots up, asks for a user/password, but now it does not recognize my user name and password.I can log in as an administrator to the Workgroup with the new name. but i cannot access the old Domain with its user and passwords. I tried to change back to the old name and to domain, but when doing that i get and error messsage which says: The following error occurred validating the name "xxxxxxx" (network name that I use at home) this condition may be caused by a DNS lookup problem. so I'm not sure if a should run the clear DNS cache. and if in doing that I'll be able to restored it back to the stage that i was before I made the changes.

See Which User In My Domain Modified Folders?

Sep 28, 2012

We have shared network drives on my network whose folder structure must not change. We have users who must have full access to the contents of these folders and be able to read/modify/erase and create new files inside these folders. However, the structure of the folders must not change so that other users/programs can locate files within these folders.

Some users sometimes "aggressively click" and drag and drop folders into different locations and can't remember where they dropped them. This makes them inaccessible for other users. We have a lot of folders so I implemented FileWatcher Simple program to monitor these folders and if there is a change in folder structure I get an email with an attached log. The log tells me which folders got created/deleted/renamed and I am able to restore the folder structure if need; but I cannot see who caused these changes.

1. Is there a way for me to see which user in my domain modified the folders?

2. Is there a way to disable users from drag and dropping, deleting, renaming folders yet still maintain full access to the files within these folders?

Adding / Removing Workstations On Domain?

Jul 11, 2011

adding/removing/re-adding a workstation to a domain and Active Directory. We use DHCP at work for our addressing scheme. The problem I had when naming a new workstation the same as the one I am replacing on the domain was that I noticed the new pc with that same computer name as the previous pc was still trying to use the IP address that was assigned to the workstation before by dhcp, so the new workstation was not showing it assigned an IP address. I would try pinging the computer name but there was no reply because it was still showing the ip address of the computer disconnected that had the same name.

- remove the faulty workstation from the domain to workgroup, then restart

- then from Active Directory do I need to reset the Computer name

- then do a ipconfig /release on faulty workstation that has been removed from the domain to release the leased ip address in dhcp

- then disconnect the faulty PC and connect the PC I am using to replace the previous PC

- Name this workstation the same as the one I just disconnected and removed from the domain

-Add this PC to the domain and restart

Moved Account To Workgroup From A Domain Now Cannot Log-in

Jun 14, 2012

To start off, I work for a small business where we do not have an IT department

One of our users changed his domain to a workgroup (made us rethink who has admin access on all our PC's) thinking that it would somehow fix the problem he was having with not being able to print anything to a network printer. Well, this promptly called for a restart and upon restarting would not allow him to log back into the user account.

This all makes sense to me as to why it will not let him log-in using credentials that he is no longer a part of due to security restrictions. But my question is how do i recover the account? In other words, how do I go about rejoining that user account to the domain that everyone is located on.

If all new user accounts are defaulted to join the domain, how come its not just as easy to move a user from a workgroup back to that domain?

Also, the machine is running Windows XP. It's critical that I get the old user account set back up because it was used for Outlook e-mail as well as several important documents/spreadsheets. I know that none of these files are lost as I can still navigate to them through the Local Disk. But really I would like to get the old user account working instead of having to copy/paste all the old content to a new user account in order to hopefully retain all old settings and configurations. tl;dr A user on our domain moved his user account to a workgroup and now is unable to login or access his user account. How do I move the user account back to the domain?
