Set Up A Home Network - Move Files Between Computers
Feb 23, 2012There are currently four computers in the house, all running Windows 7. Two of them are wired using homeplugs (different brands) and two of them are wireless.
I've tried using Homegroups but this never seems to work.Now that I have all the computers using the same OS I want to start from scratch and set up a basic home network so I can move files around between computers.

Feb 12, 2012I love sharing on my home network to transfer files from one computer to the next. However, I will soon have tenants in my house sharing my network ...so they can use my Wi-Fi to get on the internet.I need a solution to give them access to the internet without losing my own network sharing ability.I do not want them accessing my files.I have Windows XP home and a Dlink WBR-2310 router.As I see it, I need to either upgrade to a router with a Guest Zone/Access feature ...OR..upgrade to Windows 7(?) to give myself more networking options (i.e. file sharing where I select the users or set a password). Currently the XP permissions are too general.

Nov 6, 2012Okay so I had all this set up to be simple back in windows 7.
Basically, what I did was turn off password required sharing or whatever, so all I had to do was click on networks in the left side panel when i was in My Computer and click on say, my wifes laptop and it'd open the public folder she had there, and I could drag and drop stuff into and out of it. And same for her and seeing mine.
Now that I have windows 8 on my PC It's all buggered up.
I didn't change ANY settings on HER laptop, but when I try and access it (I used it to back up important files while fresh installing w8) it's asking me for a username and password

Jun 8, 2012I need a software that i can use to transfer files from one windows PC to another over the LAN network.I've tried "Quick'n Easy FTP server Lite" and it works, but its really slow (About 2MB/s) ( i know my hardware can go much faster than the software is allowing). But at least the speeds were constant and unchangingI have also tried Windows Easy Transfer. But that software makes it a bit harder to send back and for whenever i feel like it, and although sometime i would hit speeds 5 times faster than with the previously mentioned software (about 12MB/s) , those speeds were not constant. It would be slow (around 1MB/s) and then spike up, and then go back down, and repeat in that fashion

Jan 10, 2012My Laptop IP 192.168.0.198 cannot see shares with desktop 192.168.0.199. Both PC's are win 7 with firewalls turned off. However the desktop can see shares on laptop. All computers are part of WORKGROUP. When wireless i can ping desktop.When i plug Ethernet cable to laptop 192.168.0.196 I can access desktop files.Also weird thing i have turned off password protection sharing but still asked for password (can live with that though)

Jul 20, 2012They both have laptops and share data via a flash drive and emails between the two laptops.This is the scenario, They both input data into one excel spreadsheet on laptop 1. Laptop 2 works on data, puts it onto a flash drive then goes to laptop 1 and opens the spreadsheet and enters data from flash drive.My thought is wouldn't it be great if they could use some type of VPN? They could both work from home and access each others computer files, spreadsheet and databases.

Mar 5, 2013I am trying to transfer files from Laptop A to Laptop B. I can transfer files from B to A, but I can't transfer them from A to B. When I try to, I get an error message saying "Windows cannot access Laptop A".It then gives me the option to diagnose the problem (I'm using Vista on both laptops, by the way). When I click that, it gives me the error of "Cannot communicate with Laptop A. We pinged the remote host but did not receive a response".Laptop A is connected to the network according to it, it can access the internet fine and can access other laptops on the network fine. I have disabled the firewall, shared the folders appropriately, made sure they were both on the same workgroup (they are both on the default Vista WORKGROUP), and still nothing.

I have an EDIMAX BR-6228nC 150 Mbps broadband router to which my desktop is wired and the laptop connects through WiFi. The speeds never go above 2.5MBps, so there should be plenty of bandwidth left for Internet use. My router config confirms that there's no Internet connection while transferring the files.

So, the bottom line is that I can access (and modify) the files across the network if I'm doing so manually, but my Windows service fails when trying to do the same thing. If I run the program through Visual Studio, it works. If I run that same exact code as a Windows service, it fails.

My concern is they come in and connect to our wireless network with no supervision or anything else. I am worried they will introduce a virus, trojan, or something to our network. What the best way to keep them from introducing unwanted malware from a thumb drive, virus in email, or something to that effect shy of standing over them while they install and run an antivirus software?

Feb 28, 2011I will try to explain my problem as clear as possible but my knowledge about networks and routers is very limited.
I have a DIR-615 version:C1 firmware:3.13NA My ISP is ATT DSL Modem is Siemens SpeedStream 4100, it does not have a router built in Internet line is connected from wall to modem, to router, to PC.
after I upgraded the firmware I had no internet coming out of the router, I bypassed the router and connected straight to the PC and I got internet. I unplugged the power on both modem and router waited a whole night (I was too tired) and in the morning internet was back to PC and I had WIFI again BUT. When I put a password on the WIFI network all my stuff finds the signal but cannot connect, if I open the signal meaning if I have no password and the WIFI is open I can connect all of my electronics without any problems.
I already tried using WEP and WPA but still unable to connect anything, I been leaving my signal open when I'm at home for the last week and I don't like it.
Before the update everything worked fine.
I don't know if this matters but I have a PS3, Wii, Roku box, Laptop and a couple cell phones connected to it. And there are like 6 or 7 network signals close to my house.

Oct 30, 2011I am making my wireless network with Wireless router DIR-600 and DWA-525 desktop adapters for my office. I created a most secured type of network WPA2. And I have to create profile for DWA-525 desktop adapter to connect to my network and it requires the network secret key to connect. But This secret key is viewable from the "Network connection manager" when one can click on modify network and click on "Show text in the password field" by everyone using this computer (I mean by all other office staff). I don't want to let any one know my wireless network secret key. Is there any way to protect the key while having the computers automatically connected to wireless network. More information is below

My home network is on the HomeGroup Home1051 --- I have a work PC that I want to be able to use the networked printer on HomeGroup Home1051, but it is set up under a work Domain so I can have full access to work files etc.Is it possible to somehow share the printer on my Home1051 HomeGroup with the work computer on a Domain?

It seems the problem is probably from my home wireless router supplier by-aol as I can access work from my laptop anywhere else except my home. But then I have been able to do so until the work router was changed so i don't know what could be wrong?

Feb 24, 2013I have a Time Warner Cable business class service with no static IP, with a wireless modem which is plugged to a CAT5 distribution panel. On the jacks (2 other rooms on the house) I have a Linksys E3000 and a Linksys Valet router for signal boost and gadgets usage (TV, cameras, etc).The main router (TWC) has it's own external IP which TWC assigns to me and internally distributes via DHCP the range 192.168.0.x. With that said:
- The E3000 has a 192.168.0.6 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The Valet has a 192.168.0.7 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The main router has the 192.168.0.1 as the gateway and web-interface
Whenever I connect something to the E3000, it is distributing the 192.168.1.x range and the valet 192.168.2.x range.That works perfectly for my home based business until I decided to use more stuff on the network such as a IP printer, IP cameras, etc.
- The IP cameras are connected to the E3000 due to signal strength and I have manually assigned them the 192.168.1.15 and 192.168.1.16 IPs and ports 9001 and 9002.
- The printer is connected to the E3000 and I have manually assigned the IP 192.168.1.30.
Issue 1: Port forwarding On the main router (TWC - UBEE) I have tried to setup a port forwarding by informing the Local IP as 192.168.0.6 (E3000 IP), Internal Port 0, Public Interface IP (0.0.0.0), Ext Start Port 9001, Ext End Port 9001, Protocol - Both, Enabled Yes. On the E3000 I did the same config (screen shot attached e3000.png).This is not working properly. I can't get into the camera.
Issue 2: Printer/ The printer is only accessible if I connect to the E3000 (because it is on the 192.168.1.x network)
Issue 3: How to configure all the devices on the same subnet? If I want everyone to be on the 192.168.0.x network, how to configure properly the E3000 and the Valet? I have tried to force them into the same network but it would not work properly. It would not get an IP from the UBEE router (main).

Dec 20, 2012I have setup a webserver on my home PC and I have forwarded port 80 on my router to the IP adress of the PC that is running the web server. The web server is working great; I can get to my web pages from outside of my home by going to http://MyIpAddress/Anyway, the problem is with the Windows Media Player plugin I'm using. I want to embed 6GB MPEG-2 videos into my web pages. I have some videos on my PC and I want to be able to watch them remotely by connecting into my web page. It works fine when I'm at home; other PCs can connect and play the videos no problem. The problem is when I'm at work. When I'm at work, I go to my web page (via my IP address in a web browser) and the Media Player plugin says "Connecting" for a minute, then it says Ready, but the video will not play. I tried using a smaller, AVI file (680 MB) instead to see if the problem was streaming such a large file, but the video still would not play.Do I need to foward more ports on my router so that Windows Media Player can connect back and get the information it needs?

I believe I can only use 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.255 w/.254 subnet mask. However I already have some servers that are configured with applications (On the 192.168.2.0 network) that I do not want to change ips on because it would be a pain to reconfigure so, my other question is other than using .252 to extend it to 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.3.255, (I need the 192.168.2.0) is there anything I can do? Like use 192.168.1.0 with subnet mask of 255.255.254.0 to get the 192.168.2.0 network? The reason I asked is I was using a subnet calculator to try and figure this out but every time I put in 192.168.1.0 with .254 subnet mask it changed the ip to 192.168.0.1 to 192. 168. 1. 255.I would really like to use the netgear only. The way I have it now is not working I am able to ping the internet from the 192.168.1.0 network but I can't ping from 192.168.2.0 network to the 192.168.1.0 network.

Jul 13, 2012At the moment I have my home network (192.168.0.0/24) like as below (all connect using straight cables): [code] My Cisco lab equipment are in the basement all connecting to an access server which at the moment is plugged into Switch3-dumb (along with a printer & NAS).What I'm thinking is to replace the Switch3-dumb with a 3550 I'll be picking up later this week.Then using this to do as the Switch3-dumb did maybe by creating a native 'vlan 192' & putting it into a gig interface which will connect to the network using the straight cable, also putting the printer & NAS into the same vlan.This will hopefully still give me connectivity throughout.Then when required I'll like to use the 3550 with the rest of my Cisco equipment for setting up different labs (segmenting them from the home network by using different vlans etc.One of my reasons to implement the 3550 into the home network is to be able to play about on a regular basis (port monitor, traffic stats, etc).
