Mar 19, 2013I have a desktop with windows 7 and ubuntu 12.04 and a laptop with same ubuntu. My desktop is connected to wired network through ethernet cable through a switch. Is it possible to connect and share The internet of my desktop with my laptop? can I use the switch any way, because 5 ports of the switch is still free.

Whenever i switch on my computer and opens the browser it first redirects to the page url... where it asks for Username & Password, our ISP gives us a IP Address which displays on the web page after logging in.I want the internet connection to be shared with my roommates so i bought a 8 port Ethernet switch (url..), which is having a uplink port also. I have connected the wire given by the ISP to the up link port of the switch & i connected my PC to one port of the switch with another network cable. I also connected my friends PC to second port of switch with another network cable, my problem is that when i sign into my ISP web page and start using the internet & my friend also wants internet in his PC & when he opens the browser the ISP's webpage is appearing and when he sign's in internet is disconnecting in my Pc. I tried to change the IP but as a default IP is given by the ISP if change the IP internet is not working.

The router model is Linksys WRT160N V2, the IP is 192.168.1.87 and if i connect a PC directly to the network on floor 1 i have working internet.

Apr 15, 2011I went out and bought a linksys 5 port workgroup switch. I tried to hook my internet into it and my other computers into it , THINKING, I would be able to get internet on all. No go. I can get inter net on one, as you can tell. but all others nothing. and to make matters worse i got win 2000, win xp pro, and linux that I like to get online.. I have : renewed IP's assin Ip's refresh, purge dns. rebooted. all and rebooted in diferent orders. double checked connections, tested all lines. The network is on a rj45 ethernet .

Aug 23, 2011my power supply was fried in a storm a while back so i swapped it with another power supply, but the power supply i put in is 20pin while my board is 24. the computer runs fine but i cant connect to the internet. im assuming the pci slots arent being powered so network card isnt working, or the network card is shot. regardless, no matter which port i plug an ethernet into it wont recognize its there. my laptop works fine but is terribly slow and not good for gaming. is there any possible way i could use my laptop to connect my desktop to the internet without an ethernet cable?

Aug 14, 2012Laptop connects to the internet via its wireless adapter and my wireless router. There are no problems here it's all going fine. My phone and other laptops in the house are all connected to the router with no dramas. I've currently connected my PC (which has no wireless card) to my laptop via Ethernet cable and allowed all the internet sharing settings with the hopes of using the internet on my PC (I've done this successfully in the past but it's not working now for some reason). The LAN network is Unidentified and as such won't let a connection pass from laptop to PC. Used the diagnose function on the LAN network and got this message: "Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration".
how when it comes to networking, IP addresses etc isn't all that good but I'm computer-savvy so will be able to follow any instructions. I have access to my routers login and all that if required. A friend of mine mentioned something about DHNC or somesuch but I don't know what all that's about.
