I have a dumb switch. If I connect a cable internet to that dumb switch and if all the pc’s are also connected to the dumb switch then is it possible to share that internet to every other peripherals connected to that dumb switch?

I know that setting up a router won't probably work, but what if I use a hub or switch? Whenever i switch on my computer and opens the browser it first redirects to the page url... where it asks for Username & Password, our ISP gives us a IP Address which displays on the web page after logging in.I want the internet connection to be shared with my roommates so i bought a 8 port Ethernet switch (url..), which is having a uplink port also. I have connected the wire given by the ISP to the up link port of the switch & i connected my PC to one port of the switch with another network cable. I also connected my friends PC to second port of switch with another network cable, my problem is that when i sign into my ISP web page and start using the internet & my friend also wants internet in his PC & when he opens the browser the ISP's webpage is appearing and when he sign's in internet is disconnecting in my Pc. I tried to change the IP but as a default IP is given by the ISP if change the IP internet is not working.

The router model is Linksys WRT160N V2, the IP is 192.168.1.87 and if i connect a PC directly to the network on floor 1 i have working internet.
I went out and bought a linksys 5 port workgroup switch. I tried to hook my internet into it and my other computers into it , THINKING, I would be able to get internet on all. No go. I can get inter net on one, as you can tell. but all others nothing. and to make matters worse i got win 2000, win xp pro, and linux that I like to get online.. I have : renewed IP's assin Ip's refresh, purge dns. rebooted. all and rebooted in diferent orders. double checked connections, tested all lines. The network is on a rj45 ethernet .

View 11 Replies View RelatedI got a spare WAG160N lying around which I want to test to see if I can get a better range with it than my current router.My internet is connected via a cable modem which I connect to the ethernet port 1 on the WAG160N - which in my experience with other wireless routers - will work and broadcasts internet through wifi. However I can't seem to get it to work.After doing a bit of searching I found that some people say this isn't possible on the WAG160N while others say it's possible if I switch the port 1 to "Use as WAN port" in the ethernet setting tab page (Tried it, still doesn't work). I can obviously connect to the router setting page but no internet is flowing through (And the internet LED does not light up)
What settings do I need to use to make this work or is it indeed impossible? It's in bridge mode only at the moment with other settings untouched from factory defaults.One person says it's possible but I can only get it to work with 1 device because it's assigning the public IP on the cable modem onto the one device - but I couldn't get this to work either.

my power supply was fried in a storm a while back so i swapped it with another power supply, but the power supply i put in is 20pin while my board is 24. the computer runs fine but i cant connect to the internet. im assuming the pci slots arent being powered so network card isnt working, or the network card is shot. regardless, no matter which port i plug an ethernet into it wont recognize its there. my laptop works fine but is terribly slow and not good for gaming. is there any possible way i could use my laptop to connect my desktop to the internet without an ethernet cable?

My phone and other laptops in the house are all connected to the router with no dramas. I've currently connected my PC (which has no wireless card) to my laptop via Ethernet cable and allowed all the internet sharing settings with the hopes of using the internet on my PC (I've done this successfully in the past but it's not working now for some reason). The LAN network is Unidentified and as such won't let a connection pass from laptop to PC. Used the diagnose function on the LAN network and got this message: "Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration".

I'm using a windows xp and my sister is using windows 7. We were both connected to the wireless network but none of the computers could get on the internet; so I restarted my mom's laptop (which is the hotspot) and my sis's laptop started browsing but mine didn't and it's still not browsing. I connected the broadband cable to onboard ethernet & configured the ip,subnet mask, gateway, DNS1 & DNS2. Internet connection was established.
