Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT54G In Access Point Mode Impossible
Jul 18, 2011I have a network with 2 WRT54Gs in it. One in the besement connects to my cable modem and serves as a gateway and DHCP server as well as a wireless access point. That WRT54G is perfectly accessible. I have another in my room set up as a router and access point only, connected by its ethernet port to the gateway. This one proves a bit trickier. Thet network works flawlessly, and if I couldn't see it sitting right there I would doubt it even existed. I can't ping it (I forgot the IP but tried all the ones that seemed logical), it doesn't show up in my network map, etc. From what I gather that's how a switch is supposed to work. But since this is also a managed router, I would think there should still be some way to connect to it to administer it. How can I log in to this router to change settings if I need to?
I'm not sure if maybe 192.168.2.0 is the other router or if that's some kind of special address (My network is on the 192.168.2.* subnet, don't even ask why...). I've seen it in other posts about routing tables but they all had it routing to 0.0.0.0 instead of the router's own IP. I tried pinging 192.168.2.255 and got no responses at all, not from any computers or from either of the routers, so that was not useful. Tracert from my computer to the gateway doesn't show the router (my computer connects to the gateway through the router).

I am using a Linksys E3000 as my wrieless router, atm, and was wondering if there was anyway to use the WRT54G as an access point before I go out and buy other network adapters to get these devices connected.

Aug 29, 2009I just bought an LG Bluray DVD player (BD390) which is unable to find the access point in my home network.My router is a WRT54G, ver. 2.2, running firmware: Ver.4.21.1. My home network uses high speed cable with two computers on the wireless network, all working with no problems.The router is on the second floor but the two computers and the new BD390 are on the first floor - about 35 feet away. I have the wirelss security set to none and use only the specific computer MAC addresses to allow connection to this network.
I found directions in the forum for a setup using the LG BD390 but with a different Linksys router. I changed the security to WPA (AES); the Beacon interval from 100 to 75; the Fragmentation Threshold from 2346 to 2304; and the RTS Threshold from 2347 to 2307. The DVD wireless connection still failed to find my network. There is a "Push button" connection feature on the BD390 setup which I tried, but the only "button" on the router I could find was in the basic wireless setting, a green icon for the wireless SSID setup. No connection was made there either.
The recommendation connection from the LG manual is for a network cable, but that would be over 50 feet and a real pain to connect, so I would prefer WiFi.

Dec 11, 2011I am using a newer wireless router but would like to use my older wrt54g router as an access point (wired and wireless) at the other end of my house. how to do it, and what the specific settings should be, especially the security settings. I can connect the wrt54g via a homeplug (cannot run a LAN cable). I had previously tried an Aztech wireless homeplug but found the security feature to be worthless and everyone was able to "break-in".

Oct 22, 2011I have a WRT54g with Tomato firmware. I am trying to set up a WAP54g to extend the range but while that access point does show up as a network, nothing can connect to it. I already have the router's MAC address put in the WAP. I think the problem is that I have Tomato on the router and that conflicts with the default firmware on the WAP. Range isn't really the problem, I just need to strengthen the signal in a specific area that it's not getting to because of walls. I can't even switch to previous versions of Tomato anymore. I may have just bricked it.Some facts about my setup-My modem has default settings: PPPoE connection with a DHCP server enabled.-I set the router to use DHCP and put it in "Access Point" mode.
-The WAP is set to repeater mode and it was set to Static IP configuration by default. I simply followed the instructsions here: url....
-There are three different MAC addresses: The WAN, LAN/router, and the Wireless. I put the Wireless MAC address in the access point. Is that correct?
-My desktop is wired directly to the router and it has a static IP outside the router DHCP's IP range-UPnP is enabled by default in the modem and router, but I'd like to try to get this working rather than buy all new equipment.

Apr 13, 2012I had my router settings in a file on my hard drive so I would not lose them. Just my luck, my hard drive took a giant dump and the restore did not restore 100% and guess which file was among the missing?So I've followed about 15 different "reset" instructions which includes holding the reset button for 10-60 seconds; unplugging the router afterwards for anywhere from immediate to 60 seconds. Obviously, none of those sets of "sage" advice had any influence whatsoever on my router. My "server" is of my own creation:

Sep 6, 2011I have spent most of the weekend trying to get this router to act as a proper Access Point.
When it does work (Stay connected) speeds and latency are rotten. If I go back to Routing Mode this thing kicks butt, but I isolate all devices attached to a different subnet and trying to set up proper routes has proved imposable. Firmware 1.0.2 r 13
The online help stated to connect to the "internet interface" when in Bridge Mode DHCP Server Is not broadcasting to on the wireless or wired interfaces.
If I used the wired interface as the uplink I can broadcast the DHCP to any device on wired but again nothing to the Wireless. When I "Show Routing Table" I see two static routes pointing to the ATT router for the Wired/Wireless Interfaces.. 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 (my Gateway) Wired/Wireless (my Gateway) 255.255.255.0 0.0.0. Wired/Wireless
AP mode should only be working in Broadcast. By connecting the Wired Interfaces alone up to my switched network should not use the router at all. If you force all traffic to my router all traffic has to be inspected by the firewall You create a bottleneck my router interface is 10/100.

I decided to buy this after reading it offered Bridge/Access Point mode instead of getting the WAP610 because I wanted to have the option to change to routing mode or AP mode. Since my ATT Uverse Router Wireless is “g” it takes forever to transfer files to and from my servers.

Jan 19, 2013I have a WRT54G router that I have not used for many years, but now I need to use it again. I have connected it between my modem and PC, and I am able to get an internet connection on the PC, but I am unable to connect to the router's configuration page. I have tried resetting the router numerous times (holding the reset button 5 seconds, 10 seconds, even longer) to reset the IP address to the default 192.168.1.1 address, but still cannot access the page. The power LED is on and the WLAN and Internet LEDs are on, and the LED for the port my PC is connected to is on. The hardware version of the router is v3. I tried downloading the latest firmware, but without being anble to communicate with the router at the IP address I cannot update the firmware. How can I go about connectiong to the router's setup page? When using ipconfig, the Default Gateway appears to still point to my ISP's IP address instead of the router's.

Apr 27, 2012When I had DSL, my WRT54G was my DHCP master for my home network. When I got AT&T U-Verse, their "gateway" became the DHCP master and also the wireless access point. But the signal was not strong enough where I wanted to use it, so I hooked up the WRT54G again. I discovered that if I connected the U-Verse gateway to the "Internet" port on the WRT54G Linksys, then my home network was split in two, which I did not want. The WRT54G access point is physically somewhat distant from my wired computer, so I wanted to keep the U-Verse gateway as the DHCP master. (The U-Verse gateway is a router with four "computer" ports but no "Internet" port.)
I followed instructions on the Linksys web site, and using my wi-fi connected computer I re-programmed the WRT54G to be "Disabled" as a DHCP server. Then I powered down and physically connected the U-Verse gateway to a "Computer" port on the WRT54G. This solved my problem: my distant wi-fi computer now has a good signal, and both computers "see" each other.
However, now I seem to have lost access to the WRT54G setup "web page." Is it possible to access the innards of the WRT54G when its DHCP service is disabled? Or would I have to reset the device to factory configuration and start all over if I wanted to make any tweaks?

Mar 18, 2013I have a Cisco 880 (supplied by my company and as such I have little access to the control panel). I have a Linksys (Cisco) E1200 to use as an access point. Cisco setup (love it!) but the simple setup gives the E1200 an ip range starting at 192.168.1.1 while the Cisco 880 range is 192.168.185.113. I need to have all connections in the same ip rage (192.168.185.xxx) for remote monitoring. What is the best way to accomplish this? Bridge mode (I don't need Guest Mode which I read is not possible in bridge mode)? Disable DHCP on the E1200?

When I set up the Linksys, I connected it directly to my computer and changed the IP address to 192.168.1.2 and disabled the DHCP. I then disconnected the Linksys from the computer, connected it with an ethernet cable from a LAN port on the Linksys to a LAN port on the D-Link and connected the D-Link to my computer. Both routers work perfectly but when I try to access the Linksys settings from my web browser it will not let me. I don't even get the login screen. Sep 15, 2009I was using WAP54G in our company in AP client mode to support "wired" connection to far workstation being part of Windows Domain (it needed network connection before logging to windows). It was working fine for a year, secured with WPA. this AP client was wirelessly connected to another WAP54G unit running regular AP mode.
Today was changing configuration on "AP client" , wanted to cvheck if WPA2 is supported while in AP client mode. well it wasn't, so ireverted the config back to what it was. after power cycle device stays in "bricked mode".
it doesn't boot up, LAN port inactive (like a cable unplugged), no WiFi, only 2 LEDs are lit permamently red POWER and yellow LINK. green ACT is dead. resetting is no luck, tried resetting it multiple times holding it with device powered on or off, tried 30/30/30 method, no luck.
finally took it apart (was out of warranty anyways) and shorted pin 16 (A18) on flash chip (Spansion) while powering up and it worked to the point when LAN interface becomes operational with 192.168.1.245 IP and i get ping response.
I thought that's it, would just re-load firware (original latest 3.04.03) and done. i was wrong. device takes fw via tftp, but immediately after tha it stops responding, green ACT never comes back online, reset still do not work. after power cycle LAN port is dead (as well as device) again. what has happened to it?

However, I was not able to get the two to communicate with WPA2 security - maybe, I just didn't try hard enough? Both devices are capable of doing WPA2 with AES but client mode doesn't seem to work with WPA2? I had to drop back to WPA-AES to make it work. Why is this?

Aug 9, 2012The WES610N bridge seems to work fine, but I cannot get into the web-based setup. I have tried using it directly through my laptop, as the instructions show, then through an Asus RT-53N as a router. I did have the 610 connected to my laptop's ethernet socket, where it provided internet through the Asus RT-53N wireless router just fine, but when I tried to access the setup, again, it would not work. Next, I tried it through a desktop and Linksys RVS4000, again nothing. I would like to check the firmware and see what else is in the menu.

Dec 20, 2012Just bought a new router and repeater for a wifi hotspot i am currently running.. I thought i was havng problems with the repeater after i change from router to a server, (and i'm now using a router in bridge mode) so the server is managing all the dhcp.. etc, Hence, the router is Running as an access point. The server which is a Hotspot Server does the rest. For some reason, repeaters, do connect to the access point apparently, but when connecting the client to the repeater (instead of access point) I can't get internet access. although i do get access to the repeater setup.and access point setup too.. or if that is the fact that repeaters must be connected to a router, not access point? should I use it as a WDS? or AP-wds? I have a Cisco Lynksys e1200 router (which i'm using as access point) and an Encore ENXWI-1AN45 3 in one range extender?
