Similar to this issue with the EA4500 - I have the same issue with maping the drives from both PC and Mac - the USB drive is recognized, admin/user names are coreated appropriately, the folder structure is imported into the admin control..similar issue with EA4500 user here
View 3 RepliesRecently purchased an EA4500 router and it is connected to the Internet. One of the reasons we purchased this router was to take advantage of the usb port (only 2.0 unfortunately) to be able to share media across the network. I spent over two hours on the phone (4/16/2012) with Linksys Tech support trying to get this feature to work. When using a little flashdrive I can easily find the connected usb device. However, when trying to connect to an external hard drive, it will not connect. I tried three different external hard drives, a Western Digital 500 GB Elements drive, a Western Digital 2 TB My Book Elements drive and even a portable 1.5 TB Seagate FreeAgent drive. Every drive had the same result. In fact after plugging each one into the EA4500 and then selecting Safely Eject and then plugging them into my computer, each one had to go through the Fix process in order to work again. I tried this several times. Linksys Tech Support could not get it to work either, and they even used remote access. When going into the web interface of the EA4500, the router sees the external drives attached to it. However, only the little 16GB flash drive can be seen by the computer. I know there is a list for approved devices that work with a different device, the E4200 [URL]
It looks like my devices are there but nonetheless its not working. Really not sure why the router can see all of the devices but only the computer can see the flash drive.
The official List of tested USB storage devices for the Linksys E4200 is so short, and the fine print "If your USB storage device is not listed on the table, it is not guaranteed to work with the router" is very discouraging. Let's create the community-based list of tested External Hard Drives for the Linksys E4200? Post here the brand / model of your external hard drive which works well with your E4200. State Firmware version as well. My Toshiba 640GB Canvio® USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Toshiba P/N e05a064cau2xr, M/N 593400-b), when connected to E4200 Firmware v1.0.03 (Build 14), stops the router's both wired and wireless connection after a couple of hours.

E4200 media server in .02 firmware
I just bought an IOSafe Solo G3 3TB drive. My E4200 does not seem to mount the drive correctly when formatted as GPT. When I re-format as MBR, it mounts with no problem, but this limits the drive size to 2TB. Has anyone had success with this HD or others using GPT format?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought an EA 3500 refurbished through linksys. I can't configurate it using the CD-Rom. Always said "can't find your router". So I flash with the classic firmware, and it fixs the problem and automatically upgrade to smart Wi-Fi. That being said, whenever I plug in a portable hard drive, the router disconnect from internet after a minute. I tried my seagate HDD and also my flash driver. Both Lost internet after a minute or so. So I think it is probably the router's problem.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have realized that E4200 V1 I have, with 1.03 firmware, seems to be dying when I reboot it and it tries to load the USB HD I have connected to it. By die I mean the web server does not work anymore (http://192.168.1.1), and new computers can't connect to the router. I suspect it is due to the amount of files I have in the External Disk Drive -I used to have Media Server enabled, but I disabled it because this problem was happening, and I only left File Server enabled. Now since I moved many of my pictures to it, it seems even File Server is causing problems, and if neither one work for me, then this router does not justify its money, since that was the only reason I bought this E4200 hardware. These problems are solved in V2? Since it is still under warranty, I could try to exchange my V1 for a V2 version.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Linksys E4200 from bestbuy tonight, mostly for the feature of plugging my hard drive into it to use it as a media server, and being able to read & write to it from any computer on my network. I have searched for hours on end trying to fix my problem. I login to my router (at 192.168.1.1), I go to the storage tab, I then click the "Create Share" button next to my WD hard drive in the list and nothing happens. Ive tried this on four different computers, and three different browsers now to no avail.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had an Iomega 1TB External Hard Drive connected to my E4200 router. I had shares confgured and they were properly running on the network.
As of yesterday, this all stopped working. The router does not see the drive; it is as though it is not plugged in.
I rebooted the router and it still does not work. I've connected the hard drive directly to my PC to verify that it works there, and it does. The router is running Ver.1.0.03 (Build 14) of firmware (the latest).
I'm not exactly sure if this is a networking problem or a Windows problem. I have a Linksys ea3500 router to which I have connected a WD My Book external drive via the USB port. When I view the router's webpage, I can see my drive listed under the storage tab; however, I cannot map the drive on my laptop. Whenever I try to do so, it gives me the 0x80070035 error. If I run the Windows diagnostic, it tells me the drive will not accept the connection.

I try to attach an external hard drive to my TL-WDR3600.
The hard drive: TOSHIBA Canvio Desk 3TB USB 3.0 Black Desktop External Hard Drive HDWC130XK3J1 Formatted w/ NTFS, 4kB Block Size (default)
When I attach the drive and click Rescan in "USB Settings" -> "Storage Sharing" nothing happens.Message is still: No volumes found. Plug an external USB drive into this Router, wait for 10 seconds and then rescan the volume.
No entries are made in the "System Tools" -> "System Log" when I attach the drive or click rescan.
The drive works fine on my desktop PC running Windows 8.
I realize that it is a USB 3.0 drive, but I understand that USB 3.0 should be backwards compatible to USB 2.0. In fact, the drive works on both, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, on my desktop PC.
What are the requirements and/or restrictions for USB hard drives on the TL-WDR3600? The information I found was, that they need to be either formatted with NTFS or FAT32 (FAT32 is not an option here due to the disk size). Are there any size restrictions for external drives on the router? Why are they not listed anywhere (user manual, specifications).

The router is not showing my external hard drive in the usb settings. The Hard drive is a seagate 7200rpm 1.5tb. The hard drive works just fine when plugged into my computer. I have tried NTFS and EXFAT. My 2gb usb drive in FAT32 shows up just fine. The external has its own power supply. Is there anything I am missing that would cause it to not work?
How do I combine two (or more) physical drives into one on an XP based machine? I have an older machine I want to essentially use as a NAS type device over my home network to stream content from, but want all the installed drives to essentially be "merged" together to show as just one if possible. I think its sometimes referred to as "disk pooling". I have XP Pro available to install so maybe this has something built-in that can easily handle this task. It also needs to be done on an XP based machine (not Linux) due to some other specialized software that will be running on it for another reason and is for XP only. Basically, any suggestions on how to have some sort of 'disk pooling' for 2+ drives on an XP machine? Can it simply be done within XP Pro? Or maybe there is some sort of free software out there that can handle this. This machine currently doesn't have any important data on it so experimenting and wiping something out can be done if needed.

However, now that I have a bigger place i want to connect the ext hard drive to the router so I can take my computer where I want. However, I cannot connect the hard drive to the router. I can plug it into the router, of course, but it will not appear under the Network folders (I use Window's Vista).

This is for work purposes (specifically for a small business that I design for). Is this doable? I've been using Dropbox but that's proving too problematic as more and more files need to be managed. I would prefer it not be through software that has to be running on a computer, as there is no "machine" running 24/7 here besides the router itself.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI used to have an old G5 tower running OS X 10.5 (Leopard) which I was using as a file server. In this tower I had a USB dock connected where I could plug in 2.5 inch drives from my archive and then access them over the network by connecting to the G5.
Last week I upgraded my "fileserver" and I am running OS X Mountain Lion Server on a regular Mac Pro tower. When I connect to my new fileserver via Finder I am only able to see the local hard drives but none of the external ones. I can add a share-point for the external drives but that is not very practical since I am always connecting different drives from the archive.
So what I would like to have is that when I plug in an external drive to my file server it shows up in the network shares without me having to create a share-point for every different drive I connect.

I set up a Western Digital 1TB external hard drive as a network drive through use of a Seagate FreeAgent DockStar. (The HD connects to the DockStar by a USB cable, which in turn connects to the router by an Ethernet cable.)
The hard drive functions as a network drive and I've configured Windows 7 Home Premium on my laptop computer to recognize it at start-up so it can essentially be used read and written to like a local drive.
Is there a way to make Windows 7, either by built-in software or third party software, automatically backup certain files or directories when changes are detected?
For example, I have a folder on my internal HD where I organize the vast amount of photos that I take so that I can easily find them through the operating system instead of having to go through a photo manager. In my ideal situation, something would be monitoring to see if I have made changes in only that folder (either adding new folders, deleting photos, or modifying files) and simultaneously make the changes to the network hard drive. Effectively, I want something to mirror the changes on my local hard drive on the fly and update the network hard drive accordingly. I do this all manually at the moment and it sucks up a lot of time that could probably be done automatically.

I've plugged a 3tb seagate backup plus external hard drive into the routers USB port and its not being recognised my other wd 1tb has no problem being picked up.
I have two USB drives connected to my EA6500. When I use the ip to connect to them everything works just fine, but I cant map the drives. If I access map drives, I cant do anything with the files. It looses connection all the time.
