Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT54G What Is An Ethernet Bridge
Jul 2, 2011
These questions are only in relation to the above Wireless Router (v6, FW-v1.02 [2010]) :
1. What is an Ethernet Bridge (the basic authoritative definition), and besides gaming, what are they generally used for in a business setting?
2. What are VPN settings in a Router used for, and can a VPN be configured on a remote PC without them?
3. Utilizing bridging, etc., can I utilize my WRT54G as a makeshift Range Expander as long as the primary router doesnt have WEP key requirements? The current WIFI doesnt reach my PC, so I thought I could configure my router midway in hopes of extending the other routers' signal, via some kind of bridging if necessary. Naturally, there would only be a wireless connection between routers.
4. How can I setup a simple Captive Portal on this router?

I have a WRT120 connected to my cable modem in the front bedroom of my home. The signal is very weak in the back bedroom, so I would like to use my spare WRT54G as an acess point/bridge to extend my wireless range. Is this possible without cables?

I have a bluray player that I want to get internet to that is downstairs. I would like to use my old Linksys WRT54g ver 2 router to do this. I just put DD-WRT firmware on it. I have a Linksys E1000 as my primary router. All I want to do is be able to to put the Secondary router (WRT54G) downstairs near the bluray player and run an ethernet cable from the lan port on the router to the ethernet port on the bluray player to get internet access. What is the best way to do this? Client bridge or Client mode?

According to the information on the bottom of the WAP54G setup screen it can connect to the WRT54G without another WAP54G. What I want to do is use the WAP54G as a bridge to connect my DVD player with an Ethernet connection to the internet via the WRT54G. Both units have the latest firmware updates. When I set it up as I believe it should be the WAP54G has all the lights on but the DVD player cannot connect to the internet.

I have an SMCD3GN (from Rogers) that is both a Modem and a Router. I also have a Linksys WRT54G router that I used to use before. The SMC is giving me a lot of problems. The connection is really bad often and my internet speed drops for no reason all of a sudden. I'm getting fed up and want my old router back.
I know it's possible to change the SMC into a modem (put it in bridge mode) and then connect my router and use the Linksys router instead of the SMC. The problem is, I don't know exactly how to set it up and would really like an explanation. I already know how to get into the SMC and Linksys settings as an admin.

I have a piece of hardware (audio device) with Ethernet network access only. I'd like to give it to my users and have them connect via Wifi. But configuring a Wifi bridge for each use is too onerous. I'm looking for a wireless bridge device with a display and keypad that allows the user to scan, select and associate with a wifi router, then bridge the wireless network to ethernet so I can attach my device. Does such an animal exist? Price is not a major factor.

I have a WRT54G v6 router and I am trying to get higher speeds from a wireless network, I have set up a dish and a cantenna and is going really well about 18-22dbi gain which is very noticeable but I have a question, does an ?Ethernet cable speeds up the transfers Like the Upload and download speeds will be faster? like a high speed cat7 or cat6 cable that can transfer data at much higher frequencies? I have cat 5 and get around 13Mbps, will cat 6 get me 16 or 17? or the router can't handle it?.Also another question is how can I make the gain on the dish higher?

i am placing a formal request to Cisco and to the firmware development team to create a new-and-improved firmware release for the WET200 wireless Ethernet bridge, a product that is still being produced, shipped, and sold. I purchased the product about one-and-a-half years ago and have enjoyed its performance. There have been, however, some flaws with the device, namely the following:While configured to use WPA2-based security, DHCP-related traffic is not passed from a router/gateway's DHCP Server to connected devices on the WET200. Current firmware release notes indicate this was a known issue and was, supposedly, fixed; however, due to the level of problems customers are reporting, it appears this may have only been resolved, if at all, with security configurations of WPA, WEP, or OPEN. It has not been fixed for customers using WPA2-based security.When I originally purchased the WET200 and configured it to use WPA2-based security, while it, initially, did have a few problems connecting to my router/gateway, it, eventually, did connect and stayed connected for, approximately, one year. However, in September of 2009, it suddenly lost connectivity with my router/gateway and has not been able to establish a connection since, even after reinstalling the latest firmware revision and after several soft and hard resets of the device. I tested the WET200 with another router/gateway, only to experience the same issue. Other devices are connecting to my router/gateway, but, not the WET200. The last firmware update for the WET200 was dated back in July of 2008. Currently, it is January 2010 and since these issues have been known for quite some time, it is unacceptable that the firmware for this device has not been updated in such a long time, especially when there are known issues with the WET200's firmware. Such lack of support is forcing me and my clients to stop using these Cisco-based products and purchase competing hardware, something I would prefer not to do; however, without better support, I and my clients do not have a choice. Expecting me and my clients to use an inferior form of security on the WET200, such as WEP and/or WPA, until a firmware update is issued is unacceptable, especially when that update has not been released in over one-and-a-half years. Such lack of support is especially unforgettable when my clients and I are looking to purchase new networking equipment. In the past, I would not have hesitated to purchase a Cisco-based product; now, with this experience in mind, I am finding it very difficult to recommend to a client that he or she should invest their organization's finances into Cisco-branded equipment. Proper, professional, timely, support of your hardware is expected of your customers, especially if you wish them to remain loyal customers. I have noticed that other similar devices, albeit, higher-end devices, have had their firmware updated, more recently, compared to the WET200. I assumed this meant that the firmware development team was updating all firmware on such devices. So far, I have been disappointed in the lack of firmware updates for the WET200. While I understand the possible desire to update the higher-end products, first, as a professional whose job is to research, recommend, purchase, install,configure, secure, and maintain both the enterprise-level and small business-level devices, I highly encourage Cisco not to overlook their small business products when the firmware development team is updating firmware for any Cisco products. Deficiency in the support of one strata of Cisco-based products is reflective upon the support of any Cisco-based product and is not easily forgiven by Cisco customers, such as myself, when new and additional hardware needs to be purchased.

I've a WLC 2106 and it is running IOS version 7.0.240. I am trying to setup a wireless mesh and used the Ethernet bridge port on the MAP to extend the network. The wireless mesh works fine but I can not get the switch to work that is connected to the ethernet port on the MAP.I'm using two different Access points. I'm using a Air Cap 3502i as the RAP and a Air Lap1142N as the MAP.The switch port that is connected to the RAP and MAP is configured as the following:
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk native vlan 2
switchport trunk allowed vlan 10,20,30,40
[code]....
The wireless mesh between the RAP and MAP works fine. I can connect a device to the MAP wirelessly and access the network with no problem but I can not get anything to work that connects to the switch that is connected to the MAP ethernet port.

In my apartment, I can receive the wireless signal of free scholl wireless, which is accessable without user name and password. Although the signal is not good, but we used to use a router EA3000 to relay the signal. Now my roommate is leaving with this this router. So I bought EA4500 and try to do the similar job. However, I find that the configurations on 192.168.1.1 are different between EA3000 and EA4500. Many options cannot be found in the EA4500 page, such as the wireless client.

I have a E4200 with 1.0.04 firmware that I've used for a while as a router in front of a cable modem. I have upgraded the modem to a Virgin Media SuperHub. I have connected my E4200's WAN port to one of the SuperHub's LAN ports and changed the E4200's mode to Bridged Mode.I can connect to the Internet wirelessly and wired on the SuperHub, but I can only connect to the Internet via the E4200 if I'm wired to it. The wireless will connect to the E4200, it gets allocated and IP address in the correct range and the gateway is shown as the SuperHub's IP address, and I can see the E4200's management website via wireless, but I cannot connect to anything beyond the E4200.

I want to setup the following:
Internet through DSL-Thompson TG 789 VN router ---> several yards --> Linksys WRT320N --> wired computer netwerk | |with printer
| |
---> Wireless Netwerk --> laptops / phones <--- (WAN depending on strongest signal)
|
---> several servers
The Thompson does the DHCP and routing. It is the gateway through the internet, IP 192.168.2.254 (mask 255.255.255.0).I can't replace the thompson since it is delivered by my provider. SSID = BertB I want to achieve that all the compuers / laptops / phone and printer are in one network and can communicate with each other So the only possibility, as far as I can see, is to set up the Linksys as a bridge.
I have to do the following at the Linksys but have some questions as mentioned below:
SSID = BertB (the same)
channel = different from the channel used by Thompson
DHCP = off
IP = fixed (192.168.2.253)
gateway = 192.168.2.254
[code]....
how the thompson and the Linksys will build a connection with each other, or will this happen automatically through the above setup?Do I have to put the mac address of the thompson in the Linksys and/or vice versa?

I bought the EA3500 nine months ago mainly for the USB port (for a NAS). I recently replaced Comcast Cable with Verizon FIOS. So I now have the FIOS router as my main router (its' IP address is 192.168.1.1). I put the EA3500 in bridge mode to extend the (wired) network. I could get: After going in to bridge mode (with DHCP), I can not log in to the EA3500 (IP address 192.168.1.5 assigned by the FIOS router). I connect my computer directly to one of the EA3500 numbered ports (after various combinations of rebooting EA3500 and rebooting PC). It just continues to say "waiting" and never logs in. Tried choosing a static route (tried both 192.168.1.43 and 192.168.1.5 with 255.255.255.0, gateway and DNS1 = 192.168.1.1) with no luck.Since I can't log in, I cannot set up my NAS on the USB port of the EA3500 (so I haven't gotten far enough to determine if the USB port will even work in bridge mode).Thought about ensuring the latest firmware but since I can't log in I can't do that. (And after a hard reset EA3500 IP address is 192.168.1.1 which creates conflict with FIOS)

After getting informed that I cannot use the AP I bought yesterday as a bridge, I decided to get another linksys E2000, as the guy in the shop informed me that I can run it in bridge mode for sure.Now, as I am doing this for the first time, and my english is not the best, I was not able to find some instructions, or even better a step-by-step manual that can assist me. I searched the forum, but I did not find anything about the E2000 in bridge mode.

As I understand, the latest FW for the E4200 makes it possible to put he router into bridge mode. In this mode, I can use it as an access point. In bridge mode, should I then connect my router to the WAN port at the E4200?The other way to make the E4200 into an AP, is to disable DHCP and NAT and give the E4200 an IP address out of range for the DHCP range in my preferred router.
Choosing between this two option to make the E4200 into an AP, which is considered to be the best solution?And to be sure; using this option, then the Ethernet cable should be connected to the LAN port of the E4200? is the performance of an E4200 in AP mode the same as a dedicated AP like the WAP610N?

Just bought 2 e4200's! I have the first one connected to the ATT router, and I have the second one connected to the first in Bridge Mode. It works great! It knew how to configure itself to be the down-level client.
However, I noticed that the port speed is only 100 Mbps on the port that is acting as the link for the bridge. I am running brand-new CAT5e thru the house, and if I connect the cable directly to my laptop - I get 1Gbps. So I know that the cable is good.
Is there a way to change the speed of the INET port on the down-level e4200?

I have done all the Bridge Mode configurations, IP Address ad Subnet / Default Gateway, etc to the routher and can see it on my Local LAN, by it's Set name.
I can not http or Https to the Config menu in any way, so I can not establish if a Disk is connected or not. The Disk device is USB Connected to the E4200 port, but I can not acceeass any of the files that are on it.
DGW - 192.168.1.1
E4200 - 192.168.1.200
Bridge Mode
Wireless Disabled on both Bands
DHCP Disabled
Everything appears fine, but not able to bring up Advance Configuration interface .

At my work we have Comcast Business Class, and our LAN uses the Comcast's SMC static 10'net addressing. Our two POS computers are connected to wall ports that connect to the SMC router (unsure its model number, it's screwed to the wall). There is only 1 LAN port for each POS computer, I am trying to setup a 3rd computer up by the POS stations for dedicated web searching of products, emails between HQ and the other stores.
Like I said our LAN is using the 10'net addressing, and only a single port I can use. I would like to use the E1200 as a bridge/switch to connect: POS computer, network label printer. and network printer/copier/scanner/FAX .. and also have wifi available. The POS & printers need to have their static 10'net IPs .. but I want the wifi to use DHCP from the E1200.

I have just purchased t-mobile's at home phone service (voip) and they gave me a UTA200-TM Hiport Adaptor to connect for the service. Had Vonage (voip) for 2 years so know how it works and never had problems. This one however will only allow the phone line to stay on for about 30 seconds and then drop it. Have it connected to a modem (cable internet) and a WRT54GS Wireless Router. T-Mobile wants me to check to see if the router has bridge mode set up as they think that may be causing the phone line to drop out. How can I check that? I can not figure out the directions on the linksys site, too confusing.

I'm looking to upgrade my WRT54G as I have had NO luck in getting my Galaxy Tab to connect through it so far (can connect and get an IP address but can't get out to the web) and have had intermittent problems with my Blu-ray lately. I am looking for something with the best affordable range, live 3 floors down from the current one and get about 3/4 signal strength so there's not much interference it seems. I watch a lot of online content through Hulu, Netflix, and LMB games and share with 2 other people.I am looking at the E series, probably the E1200, 1500 or 1550 as they seem to meet my needs. Any users have any advice about the ease of install and use of either of these? Or would it be better to get a gateway as we are considering going from DSL to U-verse service, twice the speed for $2/month more
