I have a Windows 7 PC and a Windows XP PC that I’m sharing files on. All was well for a while, but I’ve started to lose connectivity between computers when one goes into sleep mode. Not sure at this point if it’s the XP machine or the Windows 7 Machine that’s causing the problem.
View 3 RepliesI've been running WHSV1 for at least 3 years now without any problems. Upgraded my client to Windows 7 and stream movies etc.. no issues at all. I gave "guest" account enabled with full access on the WHS server machine and just mapped theshares on my laptop..Anyway, I did some updates on my windows7 laptop and now the computer can no longer see the "server" machine."Server" appears in "other devices" in windows explorer but I can't do anything with it. Just takes me to a page server.com by godaddy.Also, I can no longer use RDP from within my own network! Says the SERVER machine does not exist.I can log in to the server just fine using logmein.
Also, made sure the windows machine has the network that it joined set to "home." I've had a similar problem years ago when I used to use zone alarm but I don't know how to fix it now. It's as if a firewall is blocking it or something.
I have a strange error on my home network that I cannot find a solution to.I have an Huawei SmartAX MT882 from TalkTalk acting as a modem connected to a D-Link DSL-G624T acting as a router/switch. Connected to the D-Link I have a Windows 7 Pro machine (64-bit, SP1) and an XP (home i think) machine (sp 2 i think).The SmartAX modem is set up to perform DHCP and DNS relaying and the D-Link has DHCP turned off and DNS relay turned off.The Win7 machine can access the network, get an IP address and access the internet without problems, regardless as to the status of the XP machine.The XP machine can access the network, get an IP address and access the internet with no problems ONLY of the win7 is powered up. When the win7 machine is off, the XP machine seems to drop about 25% of the ping packets between it and the D-Link router and has no internet access (because of this i assume). [code]
View 8 Replies View RelatedNew Win-7 machine set up. I used the printer set-up wizard to install a networked printer in the new machine with absolutely no problem. Proved it would print from that machine.Now, I get a call informing me that her old XP machine, which had been printing to the network printer with no problems, will no longer print.Documents go into the print queue, but they don't get printed.No error messages show up.I did some messing around via remote access, and finally removed the printer with the intention of reinstalling it.Scanning for network printers turned up several redundant instances of the same printer with different names. Some are identified as "invalid" some a "access denied". Bottom line. I can't get any of the selections to install.On the Win-7 machine I did find a window that indicated that the printer is designated as being shared, but I didn't explicitly set it for sharing when I installed it. Also, I somehow got to a window that told me that for printers that were to be shared with other versions of windows I could optionally install drivers to support such machines. Didn't have the driver disk handy and took the window down. Now I can't even find it again.I need sorting this all out.Part of the problem is that out there in "network land" there are redundant remnants of previous installations that are being remembered inappropriately.
View 11 Replies View RelatedSometimes I cannot connect to the router after my computer has been to sleep. This has occurred on different routers. I can still see the network, but am told I cannot connect when attempting to connect to it. Restarting/shut down does not solve the problem - I have to restart the router itself, and then my computer will reconnect automatically. Other computers/devices will be unaffected by this and maintain a connection the entire time. Atheros AR5B91 Wireless Network Adapter using Windows 7 Service Pack 1.

One XP machine is a netbook, it's rarely on and presents no issues.Here's the problem I'm having with the other XP machine:-My Win XP PC does not show up in the list of networked computers on any of the other machines on my home network.-But I can still access the shared folders by going to start and typing in \computer name.Win 7 will open a folder containing all the shared folders and I have no problem accessing (and modifying) any of its contents.-I also can access the PC via a VNC client set up on another machine and even have ports properly configured to access it from out of the house-I use this PC as a server to stream music to my iPhone via subsonic. No problem here either-I can access all the other computers from the XP machine in question.Since I can still get to the files this wouldn't be a big deal, except:-I can't map a network drive to the XP machine from the other PCs and I need to-I have an HTPC computer whose software can't find this XP machine because it's not there

The desktop has no problems accessing the other computers.One laptop has no problem accessing the other computers on the network. The other laptop has trouble with the windows XP machine. It asks for login info, which there is none. I tested with the laptop wired and it seemed to access it normally. Also, it is not consistant. It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I have gone through other posts and made sure that password requirement was off

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have been working with a friend set up a brand new laptop with Win-7 Home Premium (64 bit) preinstalled. I did the initial set-up at my home, with the machine connected via broadband internet cable to my router. I had absolutely no problem getting it to connect with the internet. Didn't bother to try getting the thing going wirelessly at my location. During the initial setup, I selected "home" as the network type (as opposed to public, etc.)But, when I took the machine to the owner's home, it wouldn't connect via her broadband modem.
Mousing over the network icon in the tray area brings up a tool-tip baloon, "Unidentified Network, No internet access). Opening the Sharing Center shows the network as "Unidentified Network, Public Network. None of the settings accessible to me from that point seemed useful or relevant.I have not been able to find appropriate settings to redefine the network type, etc. Her old machine, which is in the process of dying, is still able to connect, and I'm using the same cable to connect both machines. To top it off, I very recently upgraded my own laptop to Win-7, so I took it over there and it exhibits the same problem. And, if I bring her machine back to my house it connects right up with no fuss at all.

I have a network problem. My windows 7 machine is not detecting win xp machine whereas win xp machine is detecting win 7 machine. They are in the same workgroup named Home. And the networking system is set to work. I have left the homegroup I was previously in. I enabled file sharing for devices that use 40 bit and 50 bit encryption. On XP I have enabled NetBios over TCP/IP. File sharing is enabled on both computers. I think it's something obvious as both instalations on different computers are really fresh and both windows haven't been tampered with.

However, I want to make sure the NAS is both encrypted and password protected on the network to make sure someone doesn't just walk off with our company data (by taking the whole NAS with un-encryped info) or logging on through our network.

I've recently bought a laptop with Windows 7 and would like to be able to connect to my existing home network which comprises 2 desktop PCs connected via a Dlink wireless N router which is acting as a WAP to my Billion non-wireless router (which the two desktop PCs are connected). ie the two desktops are connected via wire to the Billion. The DLink is just there to provide wireless for my laptop (and Ipod)
The first day I setup the new laptop it seemed to recognise the C drive and G drive on my desktop (which I had set to 'share'). i was able to do file transfers.
However, the next day, and since then, the C and G drives don't show up on when I click 'network' on my Laptop's Win Explorer... They did reappear once after I refreshed the Win Explorer several times, but that trick didn't work again
Internet is working fine on all computers. Just would like to be able to share files across the 3 machines...
I've experimented on the laptop with setting as 'public', 'home' and 'work' but didn't have any luck.
i just set up my 2Xp pc's and one windows7 laptop peer to peer for file and printer sharing but i can not configure internet connection for those pc's
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to link a Windows 7 machine with a laptop running Windows XP. The workgroup on both computers is the same. On the Win7 machine, I have a couple of folders set to be shared. The first is the C Drive and the share name is C-drive. The second is Quickbooks that I have named Quickbooks. On the XP machine, I went to map network drive and in the blank typed \Remote1C-drive. It asked for username and password and just like that we were connected. But I can't see all of the files on this drive. I don't even see all of the folders - one of which is Quickbooks. So I tried \Remote1Quickbooks and Windows XP couldn't find that path even though I'm positive that folder is shared on Win7. So no matter what I try, I can't see this folder on the XP machine, I even tried copying this folder to other locations around the computer and setting up shares in hope that something would work, but it never did. So I went back to the C Drive share on the XP machine. I tried to go in reverse, creating a file and putting it on the root of the c drive (I did this on the XP machine, but the file should have actually been located on the Win7 machine. When I check Win7, the file didn't exist. So I tried the other way. I right clicked on the c drive in Win7 and created a new bitmap image file. Back to the XP laptop, that file doesn't show. But if I look at the c-drive on Win7 from the xp machine, I see several other folders and some of them like Program Files contains actual files. But some of them are just empty such as \Remote1C.

As far as I can see the settings are all ok but I've noticed that I can't ping the PC from the mac although I can ping with success the other way around tried traceroute from the macbook and it gives me this so it is able to see it somehow...Code:traceroute to 192.168.1.66 (192.168.1.66), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets 1 alistair-pc.home (192.168.1.66) 1.724 ms * 1.151 msNot sure where to go from here. I think discovering that ping is failing is a good start to diagnose.

But the XP computer does not show up on Windows7. File sharing was enabled in both. In another post TerryNet asked for the following info (nbtstat -n and IPCONFIG /ALL) from both machines. I thought I will post them assuming I have similar issue as in the previous post. here are the details of these two commands from the two machines.

I have a Win 7 machine with Win SBS 2011 in my office and an iMac. The Win machine is being setup for Exchange 2010. My problem is this: I can't Remote Desktop in from my iMac into the Win machine, but CAN when outside the network.The Win7 machine has a static IP, the iMac a dynamic. When I access the internal part of my router I can only see my iMac. I get a "can't connect to win-based machine" error when I try to Remote Connect.The only thing I can think is that using the same gateway is somehow messing things up? I've had two techs try to figure this out and they're both stumped.I was maybe thinking that since both comps are going out the same gateway that I should try anc configure the iMac to try and RDC on a different port, since maybe the iMac is listening on 3389 and sending the RDC back to itself?

I have Linux/Windows 7/Android and iOS units. Two weeks ago one of my Windows 7 laptops did not connect to internet and I thought it was the computer. I did a lot of troubleshooting the computer, still did not work at home. When I brought the laptop to a friend it work directly. Now I started to think that it was the router that was the problem. On the status page I can see that the machine got an IP address in the "LAN Computers" part. I can confirm in the laptop that it received the same IP address via DHCP.
I have look around in the menus but can not find anything that should make this computer not connect. I can not even login to the router via this computer.
I have an issue whereby my Windows 7 (Professional 32bit) Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop is losing its ability to resolve DNS when connected wirelessly to my BT Homehub (combined ADSL modem/wireless router). I have had the same laptop and Homehub for over two years and this has only started happening in the last couple of weeks. I cannot pinpoint any h/w or s/w changes that have been made and could account for this behaviour.When the issue occurs (typically after 15-30 minutes of normal internet browsing) I can no longer view web sites or ping, for example, www.google.com. I can, however, ping the Homehub and localhost by ip address. Some other non DNS-reliant services such as Skype, email etc may continue to work also.The only way I have found to reliably regain working DNS is to restart the laptop. Other attempts, such as disabling/enabling the NIC releasing/renewing IP and flushing DNS cache have no effect.
- disabling all AV/firewall software - the problem remains.
- Several restarts and finally a full factory reset of the Homehub - no joy.
- uninstalled/reinstalled the wireless NIC (Realtek RTL8191SE) and made sure I have the latest drivers.
- Removed all other devices from the network to ensure there is no IP clash.
- Laptop rolled back to a known good restore point.
I have an XP laptop on the same wireless network that does not suffer from this issue, so I know the actual connection is not at fault. I use the Windows 7 laptop on another wirelsess network (at work) and it is rock solid for 8 hours +. So, it looks to be something specific to the combination of the BT Homehub and the Win 7 laptop.Worth noting, before anyone suggests doing so, the wired NIC on the Windows 7 laptop does not work so I am unable to connect directly to the Homehub with an Ethernet cable.By default the laptop is set to obtain its DNS servers and ip address from the Homehub via DHCP � the resultant ipconfig looks like this:

It connects beautifully to a Verizon router (I can browse the Internet), but I can't figure out how to share folders on my network. I am using ACS 5.3. I have succesfully configured Machine Authentication for a Windows 7 laptop using EAP-TLS. The ACS is configured with an Active Directory external identity store where the Windows 7 laptop is configured as part of the domain. I'm pretty sure that the ACS was using the AD to authenticate the laptop's name because at first the authentications were failing because I had the Certificate Authentication Profile configured to look at an attribute in the client certificate that was empty. When I fixed that, the authentication suceeded.
I started doing some failure testing so I disconnected the Domain Controller from the network. Sure enough, the ACS shows the Active Directory external store is in the Disconnected State.I then went to my Windows 7 laptop and disconnected the wireless connection and connected it again, expecting it to fail because the AD is down. But it succeeded! My Win 7 laptop is accessing the network wirelessly through a Lightweight AP and 5508 WLC. The WLAN Session Timeout was set for 30 minutes. So even with the AD disconnected, every 30 minutes, the ACS log showed a successful EAP-TLS authentication. I then changed the WLAN Session Timeout to 2 hours 10 minutes. Same thing, every 2 hours 10 minutes, a succesfull EAP-TLS authentication. I really don't know how the authentications are succeeding when the AD is not even connected. Is there a cache in the ACS?
I'm having problems connecting to the VPN. I can access the web portal, but cannot connect SSL VPN on my Mac 10.7, or a virtual windows 7 machines. I've read a lot of forum posts about the mac problem, but for some reason the Windows 7 machine won't connect SSL VPN on windows 7 x64, Chrome, FIreFox.
I tried downloading QuickVPN and set up a user account, but it just sits on the machine at the "Connecting" screen. My primary users will be running Windows 7 Professional x64.
I have a 1 month old Samsung 900x laptop with SSD drive running Windows 8 on a home network. I use MS Office 2007 and Explorer.I am now having problems where I occasionally lose the wireless network connection with "limited"superimposed on the connection bar. Another computer on the same wireless router always continues perfectly.I have shut down and restarted the Samsung and this sometimes works. Other times it seems to come back on its own.
