Windows 7 Laptop Losing DNS?
May 14, 2012
I have an issue whereby my Windows 7 (Professional 32bit) Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop is losing its ability to resolve DNS when connected wirelessly to my BT Homehub (combined ADSL modem/wireless router). I have had the same laptop and Homehub for over two years and this has only started happening in the last couple of weeks. I cannot pinpoint any h/w or s/w changes that have been made and could account for this behaviour. When the issue occurs (typically after 15-30 minutes of normal internet browsing) I can no longer view web sites or ping, for example, www.google.com. I can, however, ping the Homehub and localhost by ip address. Some other non DNS-reliant services such as Skype, email etc may continue to work also. The only way I have found to reliably regain working DNS is to restart the laptop. Other attempts, such as disabling/enabling the NIC releasing/renewing IP and flushing DNS cache have no effect.
- disabling all AV/firewall software - the problem remains.
- Several restarts and finally a full factory reset of the Homehub - no joy.
- uninstalled/reinstalled the wireless NIC (Realtek RTL8191SE) and made sure I have the latest drivers.
- Removed all other devices from the network to ensure there is no IP clash.
- Laptop rolled back to a known good restore point.
I have an XP laptop on the same wireless network that does not suffer from this issue, so I know the actual connection is not at fault. I use the Windows 7 laptop on another wirelsess network (at work) and it is rock solid for 8 hours +. So, it looks to be something specific to the combination of the BT Homehub and the Win 7 laptop.Worth noting, before anyone suggests doing so, the wired NIC on the Windows 7 laptop does not work so I am unable to connect directly to the Homehub with an Ethernet cable.By default the laptop is set to obtain its DNS servers and ip address from the Homehub via DHCP the resultant ipconfig looks like this:

I have a HP G62 laptop and it randomly disconnects from the internet even though it still has full wireless signal. However if I turn the laptop 180 degrees or lift it above my head it will reconnect .The laptop will also only work in certain rooms of the house and not others even though it receives a similar strength signal in all of these rooms. For example it will work in my bedroom which is upstairs and on the opposite side of the house to the router but will not work in the living room (unless i hold it above my head) which is right next to the router.
A second HP laptop in the house has no problems and will remain connected no matter what room it is in and how is held. The two can be right next to each other both with full signal and one will be connected to the internet and the other wont.I have tried updating the drivers on the laptop but this has made no difference. The router is an echolife HG520b. The hp laptop which has the problem has a Broadcom 4313 network adaptor where as the laptop which works fine has a Realtek network adaptor.

So my boyfriend and I just moved and, after struggling with our old wireless router we haven't used in years (pretty sure it was dead), we bought a whole new one in the hopes that starting from scratch would be simpler. It's a Netgear and we were aiming to hook up three devices through it; my laptop, his computer, and our Xbox 360.
He hooked it up no problem and we were using wifi for our computers and one ethernet cable through the router into the Xbox, peach as pie... Except my Toshiba laptop decided to rebel and allow me to use the internet for about five minutes before claiming there's "no internet." The signal says excellent and the little alert symbol keeps appearing and disappearing, but no pages will load. I tried running troubleshooting, but it couldn't identify the problem. Shutting down my laptop and turning it back on seems to be the only way to get it going again for another five minutes until the cycle continues.

I have a 1 month old Samsung 900x laptop with SSD drive running Windows 8 on a home network. I use MS Office 2007 and Explorer.I am now having problems where I occasionally lose the wireless network connection with "limited"superimposed on the connection bar. Another computer on the same wireless router always continues perfectly.I have shut down and restarted the Samsung and this sometimes works. Other times it seems to come back on its own.

I'm connecting to the internet via my college's network, and my network trouble varies from: working fine, full speed; extremely slow; and then sometimes it loses the internet connection completely.
-I am running Windows 7 64bit
-Connecting wireless
-I have reset the TCP/IP stack repair options
I fail every ping test except for "DNS Lookup" via Xirrus Wi-Fi.

I am having an intermittent problem with my network connection dropping out for no apparent reason. When it drops, I still see the lights blinking on the NIC card, but cannot pass packets even to the router.Windows does not report the connection or the cable as disconnected when this problem is occurring. The problem will persist until I disconnect and reconnect the CAT-5e wire, or disable and re-enable the NIC.As soon as I do one of those 2 things, connectivity immediately returns (and works for another hour or so).I am running a legitimate copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on an HP Pavilion. All of the latest Windows updates and the latest firmware drivers are installed. My ethernet connection is a wired Local Area Connection with a static IP address, gateway and DNS.The IP address, gateway and DNS settings are accurate and work for several other computers here.[CODE]

I have a Windows 7 PC and a Windows XP PC that I’m sharing files on. All was well for a while, but I’ve started to lose connectivity between computers when one goes into sleep mode. Not sure at this point if it’s the XP machine or the Windows 7 Machine that’s causing the problem.

I have a Sony VAIO desktop, 5 years old running windows XP. Recently, I started getting ntoskrnl32 missing and refused to boot. My local computer guy said that it is a hard disk problem and ended up putting new hard disks and reinstalled XP. But I keep internet connection after about 5-10 minutes. If I disable and enable "Local Area Connection" it works for sometime and stops again. I have a Cisco wireless router that I use. I use that to browse with my iPhone as well.

Receive Buffer Size on the NIC is 64Kb (512 buffers). Receive Side Scaling on. 128 Transmit Buffers.Interrupt Moderation is turned on. Magic Packet features are turned off. Optimal Performance enabled.NIC Speed and Duplex are set to 100mbps Full Duplex wherever possible (automatic was also tried).802.1X authentication (EAP or PEAP) is disabled. Auto connection logic is disabled.Connection routes through two switches into a Belkin router; other devices on same networks unaffected.Much of my data is stored on a Network Attached Storage device, with UNC shares mapped to drive letters.Other Windows, Mac and Linux devices connected to the same NAS device have no problems staying connected. When the issue occurs, I can't ping the gateway, do DNS lookups or pass any packets as far as I can tell.I have tried swapping out the CAT-5e cables for other cables and even ran them through a cable tester.
Network fixes I have attempted from the OS level so far include:
~ Switching the dynamic port range to start at 10,000 and run for approximately 54,000 ports
~ Systematically reviewing every running service to make certain that only the essential ones are on
~ Disabling all NIC stacks except Client for Microsoft Networks, IPv4, File and Printer Sharing and Comodo
~ Attempted connections with Comodo turned completely off and its NIC driver disabled
~ Attempted rolling back the RealTek driver to an earlier one from the same family and device line
Using netsh I have tried the following settings:
~ netsh winsock reset catalog
~ netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
~ netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
~ netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled

I have an ancient Compaq V2410 notebook which has started to drop my home Wifi connection recently (started about a week ago). At first, I thought it was the install of Firefox 8 as it froze and crashed but it happens with Chrome, IE and even when not running a browser.
My ISP is O2 in the UK and I have a DSL2+ service with the O2 Wireless Box II. I have gone through a power down cycle on the router and it continues to work with my ethernet-connected desktop PC. I have changed the Wireless Card in the notebook but fault is still intermittent. The notebook was also set to OpenDNS servers but that has been set back to Automatic DNS servers.
The notebook has the latest free versions of Avast Anti-virus & Comodo Firewall and the main issue is that the notebook has 640Mb system RAM which means that various Windows services have been Disabled or set to Manual.
I can sometimes recover the Wifi signal by switching the wireless on/off but it is sporadic. I have attached the Xirrus WiFi screenshots at startup, at fault state and at recovery state together with the ipconfig.txt output.

I reformatted my HDD (needed to do that anyway) and re-installed Windows 7 and all drivers (Chipset 1st) from my Dell CD after messing up a recovery test.
Everything seemed fine. But now, when I am surfing the Internet, I sometimes lose the connection. The icon in the Taskbar has a yellow exclamation point. (This does not happen in Slackware on the same machine, just in Windows 7.)
The first time this happened, I couldn't ping my router, so I checked all cables, cable modem, and router. But they were all fine and my other (really old desktop running Puppy Linux) was still connected fine and could surf to new web pages.
I did "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew" on the Dell in Windows 7 and the NIC got the correct IP address and gateway. Now I could ping the router, but I could not ping the Internet, which didn't make any sense, since the other computer was accessing the Internet just fine on the same router! (No IP address confilict exists, and gateway was correct on both machines.) I tried updating the driver, but no new drivers were found. This first time, the issue was resolved by rebooting Windows 7. I also unchecked the setting to turn off the NIC to save power. (I just checked the USB hubs per another post, and it's also unchecked.)
The second time this happened, "ipconfig /renew" failed! I set everything manually (including DNS servers), and on reboot, it still wasn't working. I did a complete shutdown of the computer and startup, now it works again.
So here I am looking for a new driver (64-bit, signed). Not only is there not a new driver...they don't even list the current driver! The only one listed is from March 2010, my driver is June 2011. Current driver is version 7.46.610.2011. Where is there a newer Realtek driver? And why are this things so buggy more than a year after 7 came out, especially if these are supposedly signed by Microsoft?

I'd like to sync my laptop to my pc. My pc is connected to the inet via modem, and my laptop through the wifi device connected to the top of the modem. Is it possible to sync the two? I'd like to be able to access both my pc (& my external hard drive connected to my pc) from my laptop. From what I've read, it's not possible unless both computers are on a wireless connection. I'm using Windows XP on my pc, and Windows 7 on my laptop.

I have a HP laptop that is running on Windows 7. Up until a few weeks ago the internet was working fine, but all of a sudden it stopped. The built-in WIFI says it's connected to the internet and when I try to repair it just says "problem could not be found." All the other computers in the house work (I'm currently on one of them). Also, when I bring it to my friends house, my laptop is still the only one that doesn't work?
