Network Setup Between Desktop And MacBook?
Feb 9, 2013
is it possible to set up communication between my desktop Windows 7 machine and my MacBook Pro so that I can access files stored on my windows pc via my Mac?I have most of my music/movies stored on the desktop and want to be able to access them around the house on my mac.Tried searching for a way with no luck,I vaguely remember having had a connection set up automatically when I had a windows 8 laptop, so I would imagine its possible to do this.

I'm having trouble printing from anything other than "windows desktop 1" (exclude "xbox 360 & Apple TV) So I need to know how to setup printing on the "macbook pro", "Windows laptop" & "windows desktop 2" These computer (except the macbook) all were connected once and I did have home group successfully connected to share the printer between them all as long as "windows desktop 1" was on. But now there in the setup in the pic and the home group and printers don't communicate with each other anymore.

i want to setup a remote desktop connection for 3 computers on the same network to connect to remotely. Originally i was going to port forward the original windows RDP port and run the windows rdp service but learnt that XP Home Edition doesn't support this feature. I want to be able to log onto these computers at any time remotely with the need of accessing the computer before i connect.

My Network is gone from my list of available networks on my MacBook. I use s NETGEAR router, my network name is simply "NETGEAR" i have never named it anything else since installing this over 4 years ago. I have unplugged the power cord, waiting several minutes before plugging it back in. Also tried unplugging both the cable and the power cord. The router has no small "pin hole" that i can see in order for me to try to re-set it this way. It has literally disappeared from my Mac. Do i need to re-install using my NETGEAR cd?

Macbook Air, OSX 10.8.1, on a home network under a Cisco/Linksys WRT110 router, internet via Optimum cable modem TM822G. Other PCs are W7 and XP, plus an iPad, iPhone & droid.
This mixed setup had worked fine until Optimum (Cablevision) replaced our aging cable modem. Since then, whenever the Macbook attempts to connect to the network it kicks all others offline. The Macbook itself can't get online. The network created by the router remains OK, but the connection to the cable modem & internet is lost.A couple of years ago, when a W7 computer was first introduced, it had the same effect, and we determined that turning off IPv6 on the W7 computer resolved it. But since then, we got a new router and it had no problem with IPv6. I mention it only because the behavior is the same. But in this case, it's a new cable modem that was introduced. Now the Macbook Air, which has been working fine on the network, crashes internet.Unfortunately, the Airbook is a high school issued piece, so we can't turn off the IPv6, due to access restrictions; not that that would've necessarily done it, but it's hard to troubleshoot when you can't make changes. So the two pieces involved in the problem are the two pieces we have little control over.

I'm trying to connect my macbook air to a university Ethernet network. I'm using the apple thunderbolt to ethernet adaptor to connect, and it registers a connection in the network preferences, with an IP address and subnet mask number. However, it wont fill the router name, the DNS server number or the search domains fields. When I use google chrome to load a webpage it doesn't load, stating that a DNS lookup has failed. How do I get connected?

Running OS X 10.5.8 on an old MacBook Pro on a wireless network. It might be relevant that I recently upgraded the wireless router and the DHCP-assigned IP addresses changed. Before that, everything worked reasonably well.
I can connect to the MBP from Windows 7 computers on the network, logging in with a user name and password, and access the files there as expected.
But the MBP disappears from Windows Explorer after a few minutes. I can usually add it back (always checking the box to remember it) but it just keeps disappearing. Sometimes when it disappears, I can't add it back and when I try, Windows Explorer says, "can't find."
How can I get this share to stick?

I have a belkin N300 router that works decent most of the time, but anytime my roommate connects with her macbook pro the whole network becomes slow to the point of uselessness. If i block her computer using mac address filtering, the latency and download speeds are right where they should be, but as soon as i allow her back on ping jumps to 800-1000 and DL speeds drop to under 1mb.

I have a couple WinXP Pros and Win7s connected to the same router wired and wirelessly. All of them have Remote Desktop enabled (via System settings) and have Windows Firewall exceptions setup. They all have AVG Anti Virus and no other firewalls installed. They all also have static ips assigned.Windows file sharing is working fine between all of them. VNC also works with no problems. But for some reason, I could not get Windows Remote Desktop to work between any of themAnother weird thing that may or may not be related is that they can't ping other computers on the same network. This leads me to believe that this might be a networking issue.I have a DLink router (can't remember model) with a Tomato Firmware.I do not have port forwarding setup for Remote Desktop because I think (although I may be wrong) that they are only used for connecting from the internet, which I don't need. I only want local connections right now.

I have an HP SR2170NX desktop set up via DSL and cable to an ATT gateway router that enables wireless for my roaming with my laptop. The laptop works wirelessly even when the cable between the router and desktop is unplugged and the desktop turned off. I would like to equip the desktop with a Cisco-Linksys WMP54G Wireless-G PCI Adapter or similar PCI-card to allow for elimination of the cable between the router and the computer.

I am trying to get my parents Kindle Fire to work. They recently purchased a Motorola Modem/Router which is hooked into the desktop and works fine. I want to get their new kindle to work and can not seem to figure it out. Their operating system is Vista which I can upgrade to Windows 7 if that would make it easier. When I click on setup the WiFi part of the installation wizard cd that came with the Motorola it says there is not a network adapter. I know what that is however I do not know why I would need it when the desktop is hooked directly into modem/router and I just need the WiFi for Kindle.

I have a Dell Optiplex running XP wired to a Netgear router. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1501 running Windows 7. When I got the new router everything programed easily and I could retrieve files from my desktop and print remotely. Sometimes I would have to "refresh" before the laptop would detect the desktop but now it will not detect the desktop or the printer. I suspect that a Microsoft Update did this but just guessing. I went back and deleted the updates that downloaded around the time that this stopped working. I have tried every thing that I can think of to get it back working but can not get it fixed.

I lost my internet connection after I set my system up for an image backup, left the house and returned. Here’s how my home network is configured:
Cable internet -> Cisco modem/wireless router combo -> Dlink wireless router-turned-switch -> my computer
My computer, which is hardwired, was coming up with a 169.254. My phone, iPad and laptop were still able to connect to the Dlink signal and surf the net with no problems. I connected the laptop to the Dlink via Ethernet – OK. I connected the laptop the Ethernet cable leading to my desktop – OK. So now I isolated the problem to my desktop. I rebooted, released and renewed IP and still 169.254. I went ahead to force a manual IP address and it worked! Reverted TCPIP back to “obtain address automatically” and got a 169.254.

Have had an issue with a previous Belkin router and having similar issues with current DIR 825. Internet is dropped when opening up the Mac Book (Using N or G). Sometimes the internet connection still works with i Pad and iPhone, sometimes it doesn't. As well, sometimes I can turn WiFi off on the Mac Book and then turn it back on, and it will work for about the time it takes to load one webpage and then it will cut out again.
Every time this happens I can unplug the power from the router and plug it back in which has fixed the issue in every case.
HW ver is B1
FW ver is 2.05
ISP is Cable

So i'm trying to set up remote desktop connection for my desktop at (xp pro, sp2).
I've went through all the steps:
- allowed users to connect remotely (system properties)
- added to firewall exceptions
- opened up port 3389
I've disabled firewall and virus protection for now as well to test.
It works fine when I try connecting from my laptop at home by opening up the remote desktop program, and entering the local static ip address that i've configured on the desktop (i.e. 192.168.x.x);
however, when I try to connect outside of this network (on the road or office), I can't seem to connect (yes, I replaced the ip 192.168.x.x with the public ip of the desktop which I got from whatsmyip.org). I also can't ping the public ip of the desktop (can only ping the 192.168.x.x ip of the desktop)
Again, router port is open to port 3389, firewall is turned off on both the desktop and laptop, and virus protection is off.
