Network Upload Speed Is Randomly Reduced?

Jan 2, 2013

First discovered this problem because I was unable to connect to a particular web site that was functional according to a friend that I was talking to on the telephone while trying to connect.

Problem: Network UPLOAD speed is randomly reduced from 2Mb to 600Kb while download speed seems unaffected (Abt. 30 to 50Mb). First eliminated the router, modem and cables as suspects working with ISP tech support. CAT 5 cabling to router and cable modem. Then I discovered that another machine on the network did not have this problem. I then discovered that disabling the network and re-enabling the network cured the problem.....temporarily. Downloaded and installed latest NIC driver from MB web site. No solution. Downloaded and installed latest NIC driver from Realtek web site. No solution. Updated MB BIOS. No solution.

MB= Asus M5A97 EVO
CPU: AMD FX-4100
OS: MS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1 (Latest updates)
RAM: 8.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 802MHz (11-11-11-28
NIC on MB Realtek PCIe GBE

Disabled TCP/IPV6. No solution. I suspect it is one of the "Advanced" settings for the Realtek PCIe GBE, but I don't know what they do. Anytime I disable and re-enable the network adapter my upload speed returns to normal. I haven't been able to isolate a particular action that causes the slow-down. The attached pics show speed test, before and after disable - re-enable network adapter. Same server.

Cisco Routers :: RV220W Sudden Reduced Upload Speed To FTP / NAS Server

Apr 22, 2013

In my last thread I had difficulties setting up access to my FTP server through the RV220W router. After getting it to work, I faced a new issue of reduced upload speed. 240ish KB/S which is obviously ridiculously slow.  After much toying around, I finally got it to work again, after doing a factory reset of the router. But today when I wanted to upload to my friends NAS, I suddenly am faced with reduced speeds yet again(400KB/S)!  settings, with one firewall rule added, to allow access to my FTP.  Other than that, I also enabled jumbo frames....so I tried disabling that again. But that did nothing.  Also tried disabling every firewall feature under "attack prevention" but, didn't seem to work either.I didn't reboot the router with each change, as that would make things take a lot longer....and didn't think it should be necessary?

I'm starting to get more and more tired of using my RV220W....seems slow and buggy..when I do a online speedtest, I get a 30Mb/30Mb down/upload rating, which matches the rating I pay my ISP for.... And I have a fiber connection.

Wireless Connection Speed Reduced By Half?

Aug 3, 2012

I noticed my wireless connection was decently fast for my needs which was 13-15 up /5 down. I am in the next room from my study and around <10 ft away from the modem in the study. However today the internet was extremely slow for everyone in the house so I went to reset the modem. After resetting the modem I noticed that the internet speed went a bit up and so I used speedtest.net to see how fast the connection was in the study. The computer in the study is connected with a ethernet cable to the modem. I was amazed that the speed in the study was nearly double the amount. I understand that wireless connections are undoubtedly slower than a wired connection, but is it normal for the speed to drop by half when I am <10 ft away from the modem?

Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter / Very Slow Download Speed - Upload Speed Is Fine

Jan 11, 2011

Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months. The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Download Speed Fine But Upload Speed Is Way Slow?

Mar 17, 2011

I live in the tampa bay area, I have bright house (BHN) as my service provider, which provides a Road Runner Lightning (40/5) package.  I previously used BHN's top tier (20/2) back in July (and prior) with no problems.

After converting to Lightning in August of this year (2010).  Of course, BHN (and every other provider) wants to force a modem/router down your throat, so I had them bridge it (in short, turn it into a dummy modem with no routing). I had an SMC branded modem gateway at the time.  I work from home 2 days a week (so I can spend more time with my kids during morning, lunch, right after work) and this requires me to use QoS to ensure my VOIP work calls don't get dropped, if the family is watching youtube videos or watching netflex.

My network was as follows SMC Modem >WAN IP>>WAN Port>>D-link DIR-655>>Switch Ports>PC1, PC2, PC3

Everything seemed fine (from a usability stand point) till about 2 weeks ago when my upload speed seemed to grind to halt.  Normally I was able to upload about 200-300K per second, and I noticed this dropped to about 45K per second during a drop box upload.   First thing I did was power cycle both my modem and router (in the proper/usual order).  After they both come up, I start using speed test to find out what my upload speeds were.  I was getting about 39Mbps down, but only .56Mbps up still.  I factory reset my router.... test, similar speeds.  Power cycle all computers (just in case), and then modem/router.  Tested, similar speeds.   Updated the firmware to the latest. Same issue

Called BHN customer service, they factor reset it, but it wasn't in bridge mode.  If I by passed the 655, in factory mode (non bridge mode) upload speeds returned to better than expected states.  If I bridged the cable modem, upload speeds seemed to crash.

Had BHN replace the modem, seemed fixed for a day, then issue came back.  Had them come back out and replace it again, this time with a Motorolla Surfboard modem... same issue.  Fine during factory reset, however after they bridge the modem, upload speeds were fine.  Told BHN I would take it from there.. Connected up the DIR-655, and upload speeds crashed again. (.6Mbps).  Called D-Link Support, and the Chinese English speaking rep seemed to not be listening to me and tried to have me adjust my MTU as well as Wireless settings.  Long story short... the rep was a level 0 id10t and I hope D-link will consider hiring better employees/contractors.  So I was all about to give up and replace it with a DD-WRT capable router (which it takes me a lot to want to swap hardware), when I discovered the wan shaping was on.  Which I thought to myself... nah... QoS has never messed up before... why would it be the cause.  Turned off wan shapping... and voila.  Issue seemed to be insta-resolved.

Unsatisfied with that... I decided to dig a lil deeper. I turned on Wan shaping again, but decided to set the settings manually instead of auto detect.

Here are the settings I used... (Advanced Tab>QoS)
Enable Traffic Shaping - Checked
Automatic Uplink Speed - Unchecked
Manual Uplink Speed - 5000
Connection Type: Cable or Other Broadand Network

Enable QoS Engine - Checked Automatic Classification - unchecked (this checked seemed to affect my upload speed by about 5-10% during testing) Dynamic Fragmentation - unchecked (this checked seemed to be the worse enemy for upload speed)

While I know I'm not any network guru (still have to use a subnet calculator for subnetting), I think I did a pretty good job drilling down the issue (once I got passed my service provider replacing modems).

Anyways, I've had overall good luck with D-Link products, even have a 5 port 10/100 switch (all metal) from 1998 that works great.  Hopefully, D-Link will just either put more documentation on the web, or hire better employees.

No Upload Speed - Download Is Fine

Dec 9, 2011

About 2 months or so ago, my upload speed just pretty much stopped working. Nothing changed with my PC/modem/router, so I don't know what happened. My download speed is FINE, fast like it's always been(over 20 Mbps). I can upload a file maybe 500KB or lower, but it takes several minutes. If I try to upload anything bigger, it doesn't work(errors/gets stuck).

It's not my PC because I have the same problem on my tablet and ipod. It's not the router because I tested it by just hooking up the modem directly to my PC.

At speedtest.net, it just gets stuck on the upload test and never gives me results.

I rent my modem from Comcast. Should I just bring this modem in and get a new one?

This is the first PC I have ever built, but I built it with a buddy who is very experienced and everything went okay. The computer is maybe 3-4 weeks old now, everything is running fine, until today when I decided I wanted to try streaming some Diablo 3.This is when I discovered my upload speed was absolute garbage.I have verizon FIOS - I pay for 15/5, the download speed is always at 20+ mbps, I have never had any problems with it., but my upload speed is fluctuating between .34-1.5 mbps, changing every second.I know this is a problem with the computer because I brought in my old laptop, unplugged the ethernet from my new desktop, plugged it into the laptop in order to keep all variables the same, and it was getting 25/5 without any hesitation. When I was downloading the drivers for my mobo I installed something called Windows Firewall with Advanced Security(maybe that was with a windows update, im not sure).

No Upload Speed From Comcast Xfinity

Dec 9, 2012

I bought comcast xfinity internet about a month ago, and I cannot get any upload speed. It's jammed up at about .40, and I'm paying for 3-4 mbs. My plan is 15/3, but the download speed is always over 20 mbs, while the upload is .40.

Comcast has been here twice with two new modems, and ran brand new cable under the house, because they said the signal was weak. Now it's strong, the modem is fine, and there is STILL no upload. I can barely upload pics to photobucket. Comcast basically told me there is nothing wrong on their end, and there is nothing they can do. The signal is strong, the modem is fine, the cabling is fine, and they are providing their service on their end.

Bizarre Download / Upload Speed Ratio?

May 29, 2012

am not a network expert but I understand that the download speed is always higher than the upload speed, right? I just bought a new internet package that comes with 5 mb/s download speed. The Upload speed should be around 1 mb/s right? Speedtest.net gives me 5 mb/s download speed and 53.62 mb/s upload speed. I called my internet provider and the girl told me it is normal. How can that be normal? I also have another weird issue. When I try to watch a video (youtube, netflix, etc...) the video starts loading correctly but stops loading after 10-15 seconds. I did a download test by downloading Itunes and the download starts correctly at 600 KB/s but after a 2-6 seconds, the downloaded megabytes stop increasing and download speed just drops until it reaches 0 and the download cancels itself.

Copying Files From ReadyNAS - Upload Speed Is Only 16mbps?

Apr 21, 2012

I am working on a small business network. 8-10 computers, usually only 3-4 being used at any one time. I'm trying to improve network file transfer speeds between the local machines and a network READYNAS NV+. There are both 32 and 64 bit OS's in play. Between the READYNAS and the local machines are two non-managed switches (jumbo frames capable) and a patch panel. The cable from the READYNAS goes into the first switch, then out of that into the patch panel then into the second switch, and then out to several local machines.

Though i would love to improve performance to all the local machines, I am primarily concerned with one in particular. It has Windows 7 64 bit and an onboard Broadcom Netlink Gigabit network adapter. This device does NOT have a Jumbo frames option in the advanced settings. Here's the issue: When copying files from the READYNAS the upload speed is only 16mbps (jumbo frames enabled on the READYNAS) if I turn jumbo frames off on the READYNAS the upload speed drops to 9mbps. Just FYI, this is a photography studio and the files are always LARGE.

I have several questions that hopefully will lead to an illuminating discussion. 1) Is it possible that the universal patch is in any way a problem? Sorry if that is totally stupid, but I've never encountered one before. I understand routers and switches, but this patch thing is new to my experience. 2) Is having two switches a bottleneck? 3) Is it possible that the onboard Broadcom network adapter is junk? Why doesn't it have jumbo frames options? 4) Could I get better performance from an add on network card in a PCI-E slot and a couple of managed switches?I realize I'm all over the map here. Bottom line, I've got a small network situation here. Very simple, uncomplicated layout. All I want is better read/write performance to a single READYNAS NV+ to a handful of local machines. If I need to settle, I can live with better performance to the one single machine. 16mbps just seems tragically slow.

Linksys E1200 Wireless Download Versus Upload Speed

May 28, 2012

I have a Linksys E1200 router, which replaced a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. The WRT54G ran perfectly, but did not support wireless N, so I replaced it with the Linksys E1200. The router is physically located in a good spot, up high and centrally located in my house.Problem is, my download speed on my android tablet, xBox, iPhone is very slow, yet my upload speed is screaming fast.

Wireless: Ping: 30ms, Download 1.93Mbps, Upload 6.27Mbps.

Wired: Ping: 14, Download 17.88 Mbps, Upload 6.7Mbps.

I've changed channels on my router, changed channel width. Connection type is DHCP. My security is WPA2. I use the wireless MAC filter (allow only these MAC addresses access). No parental controls, I don't use port forwarding or triggering, and my firmware is up-to-date. why my speed changed from the older router to the newer router?

Linksys WRT160N Router - Download Speed Slower Than Upload?

Dec 30, 2011

I am getting very slow download speeds on my wireless router (Linksys model#WRT160N). I measured it on speedtest.net. with my ASUS laptop, ASUS Transformer Prime tablet, and 2 Ipod touches. All similar speeds.

Download avg: 1.30 Mbps
upload avg: 6.20 Mbps

I measured my desktop speed that is hardwired through the router to the modem.

Download avg: 30.00 Mbps
upload ave: 6.20 Mbps

I have scanned all the wireless connection in my area and found them to occupy channels 1, 6, 11. I tried changing my channels one at a time for all 11 channels. Some did a little better than others but not a lot. Also, if I by a dual channel router, can all wireless devices pick up on the 5GHz spectrim and if some, could this alleviate some interference? Is it possible that my router is going bad and a new single channel 2.4 GHz router will be fine?

Linksys Wired Router :: RVS 4000 Slow Upload Speed?

Feb 8, 2011

I am using a Cisco RVS 4000 to test a new 10M/10M internet connection.  I'm having a small problem performing the ISP's speed test (speedtest.cavtel.net).  The download test consistently gives me 10Mbit/s, full speed for the connection, however the upload speed is usually about 5.5 Mbit/s. My ISP has been onsite and has checked the lines and tested directly, and we have determined that if connected directly we can test to full upload speeds, but when the RVS is connected, we cannot get full speed.

We've tried different cables, reseting to factory defaults, updating firmware, changing port settings, and toggling most of the other setting on the router. Some settings do have a minor effect on the upload speed, but nothing that gets me back up to 10Mbit/s.

I did notice that there appears to be no way to set speed and negotiation settings on the WAN port. Perhaps I am missing it, because that seems like a possible culprit.

Otherwise, the only only thing I can think of is a warranty return to determine if the unit itself is defective.
