Router Causing Slow Internet Connection
Jan 3, 2013
decided first of all to connect an old router to the master (but not test) socket together with different cabling & splitter/microfilter - everything starting working almost perfectly (apart from downstream data rate was considerably lower than expected each time I connected - between about 1400 & 1600 Kbps - I have max. 8 Mbps).when I connected back my current router everything continued to be OK (apart from low downstream data rate) - until I would restart the current router and everything went back to very very slow.

This only started about a week ago and everything was working fine before then. My router is causing my internet to be slow (I know this because it goes at normal speed when I am connected directly to my modem)

I have been using my DIR-655 for about 2 weeks now with Road Runner wideband services. Starting yesterday my internet became very slow and I discovered the cause was the router. I tried resetting it to factory settings and things will be fine and run smoothly for about 5-15 minutes but after that it goes back to being extremely slow. My speed tests would go from 10ms (normal) to 250-450ms. Before this issue occurred the Dlink was perfect, had full speeds. I am running a wire Ethernet connection.
I am currently using revB and tried upgrading firmware to 2.01NA which had no effect, but make my internet seemingly go back to normal for the first few minutes then nosedive again.I have also changed my speed/duplex settings in Network Config to 1gbs Full Duplex. I've also disabled QoS, and still no change. Not sure what else to do.
When directly connected to the modem everything seems fine. The modem is also the provided Motorola SBG6580 which I have called Time Warner to set the modem into bridge mode and have the DIR-655 connected to it.

I have 2 laptops and 1 desktop all connected to the same router, the 2 laptops are connected via wifi and the desktop PC is currently connected via an Ethernet cable, both laptops run windows 7 while the desktop runs windows XP and more or less every time the desktop is booted after a few minutes of normality connection to the internet is lost and the yellow triangle on windows 7 appears so to fix this I have to go into my routers settings via 192.168.1.1 and reboot which then solves the problem and all machines function as they should including the desktop.

I have 2 computers on a network, and 3 devices that use wifi on the same network. Basically when ever computer A is connected, every single computer or device on the network runs extremely slow, if at all. I get anywhere between 1200-2000 ping on pingtest with 2-60% packet loss. Even the speed on the "infected" computer A downloads extremely slow. I'm at a loss for this problem, everything runs slow and its because of the one computer connected to it. I have virus software on this computer, but its not the best so i'm not ruling out malware or viruses right off the bat.
Devices: Blackberry, Iphone, macbook (all wifi)
Computer A
Runs windows xp 32 bit,
amd processor
onboard video
[code].....
The internet modem runs to a router (Dlink dir615) then to a switch (or hub, if you will) and then to the 2 computers. The entire problem is solved by unplugging computer A from the system. But other than that I have no alternative.

I have a Cisco 871w that has been a very great product for many years. I recently switched to Windows 7 x64 on my main machine and now i am having all sorts of issues with it.. I have done a bit of research and found that it appears that it might be the firewall on the SDM that is causing the slowness issues. what does happen is that downloads from known good sites will run really slow. If i hook up my Macbook Pro or my Windows XP laptop i have no issues at all. i have tried Disabling IPv6 as well as SMB2.0 and this has not resulted in a fix at this point.

For some reason, I have been trying to use QOS for several network related jobs (VPN, streaming). It would seem that when QOS is enabled and the appropriate ports are set which a high priority, the speed of my connection drops to a crawl. When I disable QOS, I'm flying again. I have confirmed ports, and protocol types (TCP or UDP) and nothing seems to work.

I am using virginmedia superhub which is supposed to give me a max of 30mbps. I use it wireless but am often getting fluctuations in speed - sometimes 500kbps upto 20mbps, nothing consistently close over 20mbps or close to 30mbps. I have bought a powerline kit - "develo olan 200 AV Wireless N" which has improved the speed but I still get fluctuations.

I am a new network admin at my company, and I am investigating a problem that is on a network designed by someone no longer here. So, I can't ask why things were set up the way they were. Anyway, here's the issue:
We have 50Mbps WAN connections between locations. The WAN devices are 3750s, but the port plugged into the providers network is a layer 3 port. Config is below for one of the ports: [code]
So, these are Gig ports, but our service provider limits to 50Mbps. When we do a data transfer, we can't exceed about 20Mbps total on the circuit. The data transfers at maximum 15-16Mbps.
I'm not familiar with QoS. I've tried to read more about SRR, but don't understand it well enough to know. Are the QoS settings creating this restriction? Our provider swears that the bandwidth is allocated and its not being choked on their end. I have not taken off the QoS config to test it that way because I'm not 100% sure if its needed and serving some purpose. I don't want to break something in order to fix this.
Is the QoS causing this? Do I need to put a bandwidth statement on the port? Should we be using routers and LLQ?

why I am having a slow connection? Before purchasing Linksys E1200 wireless router, my internet speed was perfectly normal with Netgear wireless router. Everything ran smoothly but once I installed Linksys, it began to have slow connection. It also has drop connection sometimes. How do I fix my connection speed and the drop connection?

I have an E1550 less than 1 year old. Lately, I have been losing internet on the AT&T modem. I called AT&T but as part of their diagnostics, I have to plug the modem directly into the PC. I have loaded the latest firmware to the E1550.Lose Internet but wireless connectivity to router exists.Internet light on modem is out (modem is connected to router)Unplug modem and leave off plug in, internet light is still out.Unplug router, plug router back in - no internet connection but do have wireless connectivity to router.Take cable from modem to router and plug directly into PC internet light comes on in modem and I have internet from PC.Take cable from PC and plug back into router .I have internet via wireless. What I can't figure out is what could be happening in router that would impact modem internet connection. I have replicated this at least 3 times. Yes, the modem is a bit old, but since plugging it directly into the PC works, I'm thinking it has to be the router and I cannot figure out why unless there's some sort of electrical thing going on in the router.

I set up the e1500 and everything worked well, my download speed over the wifi was something like 50mps, now its down to .3 mps over the wifi. When I'm hardwired to the router the speed goes back up and everything is fine. The only problem is the wifi. Its not the ISP because my roommates aren't having a problem with their wifi at all. I haven't changed anything on my computer except updated some drivers since I set up the router. My network card drivers are up to date and so is the router's drivers. I'm also doing all this about 5 feet away from the router.
I have a Dell XPS L502x running win 7 64 bit.

I recently purchased an E1200 to replace a broken router. I have had good experiences with this model in the past which is why I bought it. However this has not been so pleasant. For some reason the internet connection over wifi is INCREDIBLY slow. I don't know why. It is fast when connected via ethernet to the router. I changed the MTU on the router to 1400, I set the wireless width to 20MHz and the channel to 11. I set security to WPA2. And yet it is still very very slow. It's not a matter of how many users are on the network; I live in a house with five other people and it's slow regardless of whether everybody's home or nobody is home. It's like this on Macs, PCs, phones and even the Xbox 360. I just did a speed test. Wired was about 14MBps down, wireless was around .7MBps down. I simply cannot comprehend this discrepancy. The old router was very unreliable in terms of connectivity but at least it was always fast. And my laptop is fast at my mom's house where she has an E1200. I use a MacBook Pro from 2009 but like I said, this seems to be affecting everybody in the house regardless of hardware. The modem is a Ubee modem from Comcast. I'd upgrade it to a SURFBoard but my landlord controls all the utilities and I'd rather not have to explain to him how to call Comcast and tell them to register the modem's serial number to the account or whatever.

Recently however the connection is terrible. I regularly have a speeds of 6Mbps via the router, When i directly to the modem via kabel I get a speed of 120Mbps. Therefore I ruled out that the connectivity problem is due to my ISP.

I purchased a WRT110 router about a 18 months ago. I am currently experiencing an issue where the wireless connection to the router will become randomly erratic. My internet connection will slow down or drop entirely. Sometimes my laptop will disconnect from the router entirely. I don't think it's the wireless card in my laptop since I have seen the issue on my desktop using a wireless N USB adapter, my Nintendo Wii, and my wife's Macbook, all within the last week.
I am positive it is the router. I set up a coninuous ping command to the router accross my laptop's wireless using "ping -t 192.168.2.1" in a command prompt. Most of the time, the round trip is 1 to 3 ms or <1 ms. When I am experiencing the connection issues, the ping time will rise significantly, sometimes going as high as 2000 - 3000 ms. About 25% of time, the ping will just time out. When this starts happening, the only way I have been able to restore proper connectivity is to manually reboot the router. The issue eventually re-appears. Sometimes in a few days, sometimes in as little as five minutes. I've gone so far as to restore the router to factory defaults and reconfigure it, but that has not made a difference.

Having this problem for 2+ weeks now!!! I think this problem started when i restored my router to factory setting, my router is Netgear WGR614v6.

I'm owner of Cisco RV082 router and I have a problem with firewall setup.I would like to deny internet access on port 80 (all sites) for group of users, and allow them internet access for one site by HTTPS (443)After applying rules internet connection is really slow.. Users have to wait something like a 30 sec for a website..I descovered that the reason for slow internet connection is DENY rule. After disbling DENY rule everything works fine..Now I have a few rules added to firewall:
Priority:1 Action: Deny Service: HTTP(80) Source interface: LAN Source:10.82.0.51-10.82.0.245 Destination: Any
Priority:2 Action: Allow Service: HTTPS(443) Source interface: LAN Source: 10.82.0.51-10.82.0.245 Destination: 80.64.59.42
What's wrong with those firewall settings?

I saw one post recommending to changing the MTU from 1500 to 1400. That did absolutely nothing. My comcast internet is now slower than 14.4 dial up modem I had 16 years ago. The strange thing is I can sometimes download at over 2 mbps with torrents. It's mainly loading websites where the speed is so bad.

I have recently had trouble with my wireless D-link WBR-1310 Router. Two days ago everything was working fine, my wireless connection from the router to my macbook was fine and the wired connection to my desktop pc was also fine. I went to bed and when I woke up the next day everything was still ok. About 3 hours after I had first turned on the PC that next day my wired connection started spiking and dropping connection frequently, maybe every 5-10 minutes or so. I play world of warcraft and I also use Mumble VoiP Program and my pings in both are over 800 constantly now making it impossible to stay connected to either program. Sometimes it will drop down to regular numbers (25-50ms, I play on eastern servers as I am in NY) but then rapidly jumps back up into the 1,000's. My wireless connection is still fine though nothing has happened to that, only my wired connection is messing up.
I've tried changing my speed and duplex settings on my onboard NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet which is what im using but it hasn't worked. When connecting directly through the modem the problem seems to stop so its definitely the router.

For the past two weeks or so, my internet connection on my pc has become extremely slow(from 200kb to 10). Not only has it gotten slower, i also cannot download anything without the connection stopping. The problem, i believe began a couple months ago with just youtube videos streaming slower and downloads stopping ever few minutes, but until these past two weeks its never been that much of a issue. I know the problem is isn't my dsl because it works fine with other internet capable electronics so it must be a software/driver issue. The svchost uses up 100% of the CPU when something tries to update so it likely might be a windows based program acting up.

I've recently added a desktop pc to the home's wireless network (using a D-Link DWA-125 Wireless N 150 USB adapter rev.A2) and it used to play nicely with the other devices. After switching out the router to an Actiontec V1000H my computer has begun losing most connectivity when the PS3 is turned on.
The pc still sees the network and there is a little activity there it seems. Everything runs fine when the PS3 is off and in the Wireless Network Connection Status display the speed is usually listed at 65-75 Mbps. But when the PS3 is turned on it reads 6.5 Mbps with the IPv4 connectivity bouncing between "internet" and "limited". Windows' automatic diagnosis is "Cannot communicate with DNS server".
I tried assigning static IP addresses to the pc and ps3 thinking there was a possible IP conflict with the dynamic addresses. Thinking there could be a conflict with ports I read up on port forwarding but my knowledge of networking is limited and I'm not even sure if that is the problem.
There are alot of other devices connected, 2 laptops, 2 iPod touches an iPhone the PS3 and now this old desktop clunker. I figure it's possible that the router is getting overloaded with everything and the PS3 just pushes my computer's bandwidth out the window but I would think that there would be some noticable drop in performance on the other laptops as well, which there hasn't.

I have got ADSL 196kbps PPPoe internet connection and lately there has been some problems with it. Sometimes the internet connection disconnects itself and again reconnects. And the internet connection is getting very slow. While downloading, I am able to download at full speed only at those download providers which provides full speed but at other download providers I am able to download with not even half speed. While browsing, the internet loses connectivity sometimes and from my guess I am able to browse with only half the speed. I have tried in different browsers and it is same with all of them.

I live in a converted garage at the end of a garden which has a wired connection to the router in the main house. The connection speed is spotty and fluctuates between downloading at around 100-200kBs and having a ping of around 30 in online games (rare) or download rates measure in bytes (normal). Google takes about 10 seconds to load and I can't access steam. I was wondering if this was due to the length of the cable running the length of the garden (about 20m) or some other issue - it is not the computer as I get the same result with my laptop and my desktop, both of which have no trouble when connecting in the main house.

It wasn't as fast as my linksys router but it was fine. When i tried loading youtube videos, that wasn't the same story. The videos didn't load. It started playing but then stopped after a couple of seconds. When i connected my computer directly to the modem, the videos loaded fast. There seems to be something wrong with the video streaming.

So after that, the computer was running amazingly fast, but the internet was suddenly really slow, and youtube videos especially are taking a very long staggering time to load up, when usually my internet connection is average, i have unlimited downloads on my contract so it cant be that and its the temporary internet files and cache either, just cleared it all.
