Save Files On Server Or Client?

Apr 9, 2012

I am installing Window Server 2008 with file Services, and I am making my clients to save files to their documents folder but those files are being saved straight in the Server. I was wondering if It is better to save files direct to the server or save files in each client?

Cisco Routers :: RV220W Built-in DHCP Server Can't Save Class B IP Address Pool

Mar 28, 2012

I was trying to set a DHCP pool with 127.16.0.0/16 with RV220W, however, RV220W UI can't save it. It displays "IP Address Range -"Step to reproduce: (it is 100% reproducible)

1. login into RV220W admin web

2. Create a VLAN, id 201

3. Go to "Multiple VLAN subnets", select the VLAN, click edit

4. Enter following info:
IP Address: 172.16.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
DHCP Mode: DHCP Server
Domain Name: Cisco
Starting IP Address: 172.16.2.100
Ending IP Address: 172.16.10.254
Primary DNS Server: 172.16.0.1
Leave rest of settings with default value.
DNS proxy is enabled

5. Press Save button. The UI shows text "IP Address Range -".

Expected result: RV220W shall save the setting and make use of 172.16.0.0 subnet in IP pool. By the way, the error message "IP Address Range -" seems incompleteI tried same setting on netgear FVS318N (very similar settings to RV220W), it accepts 172.16.0.0/16 as DHCP IP pool and works.RV220W has great feature set meets my needs. Its UI is slow and sometime dashboard freezes, which I can live with comparing to features. But DHCP server IP pool can't be class B is huge limitation to me.

Unable To Send Files To FTP Server

Aug 14, 2012

I have a server with two adapters: 192.168.1.200 and 10.99.1.200, 10.99.1.200 connects to a cisco router 10.99.1.254 (which I have no access to). This connects via WAN to another network to transfer files to another company. 192.168.1.200 is connected to our local LAN. I have a service that uses FTP to get and send files to a server through 10.99.1.200. I recently had to switch our IP scheme from 10.99 to 192.168 and since then haven't been able to send files to the ftp server. My question is, would a router solve my problem? If so, would I; remove the 10.99 adapter, connect 192.168 to the router, connect the router to the switch, connect the 10.99 gateway to the new router (and update any appropriate routing tables on the server)? The service appears to have issues with using a dual homed server and updating it isn't going to happen anytime soon.

RTL8111E - One PC On Network Can't Transfer Files From Server

Mar 3, 2012

I have an issue that I'm not quite sure how to deal with. I had a media server die on me, so I built another one. It is built on Asrock A75 pro4 mobo. I am using the built in lan adapter from the mobo Realtek RTL8111E. At first I had a problem when no other PC could download anything from shares from the server. I could browse the files just fine, but when I tried download anything It would not start for a while and sometimes it would show speed of 16kb/s or something like that and would not budge after that. I re installed the driver did system restore and that partially solved the problem. Now all the pc's except one can download files fine. It is thru wireless network (server is connected with cable to router tho). The media server is running win7 ultimate the laptop that can't download the files is running vista. I tried using different wireless adapters with laptop and standing right by the router and it still wouldn't work. My old server ran also win7 and I had no problems transferring anything from it. I have another pc that runs vista and it doesn't have any issues. Internet works fine on that laptop and also it can download files from other pc's on network fine. The router I'm using is linksys e3000, though i don't think it has anything to do with the problem.

Actually the other pc's can't transfer anything either as of right now, so I would have assume the server is the issue

Saving Passwords For Access To Shared Files On Windows Server 2K3?

Perhaps some method in WinXP Pro to save the username/password? As it stands now, any time one of the WinXP Pro machines gets rebooted, or if the server gets rebooted, users of the Win XP Pro machines have to re-enter the username/password, and I'd like to find if there's away around having to re-enter that info.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E3000 USB Hard Drive Media Server - How To Get Files

Jan 1, 2011

I just installed this router and connected the hard drive (Western Digital 1TB) which worked fine at first.  When I moved some movie files to another folder they lost all of their data. The file names are still present, but all the media files show zero bytes and are no longer usable.  Is there anyway to get these files back? I have been digitizing all our movies to the tune of about 90GB. What could be going on here?  I disconnected the HD from the router and plugged directly into the laptop.  Still shows the file names, but each file is still at zero bytes.  Not a cool way to have a media server for your house!

Linksys Wireless Router :: E4200 Media Server - Certain Files Cannot Properly Parse

Jul 18, 2011

I decided to play around a little more with the media server feature... I've succeeded in getting SOMETHING consistent out of the 1.0.02 firmware. It's not 100% useful.

Here's what I did - whether it's pertinent, who knows:

1) I made the Media Server "Name" completely unique. My router's name was "Penguin" and that seemed to proliferate throughout the settings on the router everywhere (SMB server name, FTP, Media Server, etc.). I decided to just call the media server "Server." I then checked the option to DISABLE the server, and saved settings.

2) With the Media Server OFF, browse to the share on the USB drive, and completely delete the T wonky folder.

3) On the Media Server page of the router config, add your media sources.

4) Enable the Media Server, save, and you'll then see the T wonky folder come back, and if you go into that folder, you'll see some files being "built."

I tested a few videos and some music with the XBMC media player on my Mac book and a Windows 7 PC. I was able to add music and video sources on my small selection of test music and videos. I was also able to play them. MP3 tags and embedded artwork showed up properly, and the streaming over wireless was very good.

Now... Here's the kicker. This was just a VERY small sample of my entire collection. I had about 5 albums in MP3 format on the drive, and about 10 movies that I personally converted to MP4 with Handbrake (ripped each movie to about 1.4gb). When I threw my entire 90gb music collection on the drive and told it to scan (it, being the router Media Server page), it seemed to populate the albums up to a certain point, and then crashed. I saw the data files in the T wonky folder getting larger for about 5 minutes, then it stopped growing. At that same time, XBMC wasn't able to see any music or videos. Even after turning off the media server, then re-enabling it, I wasn't able to see anything. If I deleted the T wonky folder, and went back to a smaller subset of my collection, it once again worked "reliably."

So, one of several things is happening here.

1) There are certain files the media server cannot properly parse, and it's crashing the services that run it.
2) Something is corrupting the media database files which then prevents it from showing up.
3) There's a maximum number of files or file size that your collection can be.

If only there was a syslog we could get to on the stock firmware...  Linksys.
