I have a little small network created with 6 computers. 5 of them are windows xp home and pro. jsut bought a new laptop with windows 7 64 bit home pre. All the xp laptops can share files easily but the windows 7 is giving me a really hard time.

I need setting up File/Folder/Printer sharing in small office LAN and also secure Files (password protect) among users. I have attached two JPG files in which i have tried my best to show the network diagram and how i want to share the files and folders. All the PCs are connected and i have made one Windows 7 Ultimate PC acting as File Server keeping its D Drive in sharing with other five Windows 7 Ultimate PCs acting as clients. The speed of a file transfer via router + LAN cable (or only the LAN cable) is about 600KB/s. I tried to turn off firewalls on both PC's, but it increases the speed by only 100KB/s.
My system mwill not allow me to turn on the media sharing in the Network and sharing center. I followed the instructions, but It won't allow me to activate it. I tried through the control panel and by right clicking the internet icon.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Buffalo LS-XLBB2 Linkstation NAS streaming wirelessly to a Sony SMP-N200 media player. For some reason, whenever I add or edit a file on the NAS via my PC the file list is not updating on the media player.I have the database set to refresh at 20 minute intervals, but some files and folders never show up and some do after a few days. There are no problems with file type as I can play them back fine when I connect a USB drive to the media player, it just seems like the media player isn't getting a copy of the new database. When I manually refresh the database, it makes matters worse. All of the files disappear on the media player list, except for one folder (the same folder every time). The original file list comes back again if I restart the NAS and media player, but the new files are still not listed. I can access the new files on the NAS fine with my PC or laptop, so the files are there, the media player just isn't updating the file list.
Things I've tried:
- Checking that both the NAS and media player firmware is up to date
- Retarting both units
- Resetting both units to default
- Trying different files types (the first file has never shown up, the second file showed up in the list 5 days later)
- Changing the database refresh intervals on the NAS
- Manually refreshing/initialising the NAS database
The main advice on other forums seems to be to set up a media server on the PC and stream though that, but the whole idea of getting the NAS was so that I could watch videos on my TV without having to have the PC on all the time.
For some reason today my desktop stopped being able to share media with other computers and devices.I mainly use PS3 Media Server to stream and download content to multiple devices including my PS3, Xbox 360, iPad, and iPhone. Now none of those devices can see the server. I tried restarting it, restarting my computer, and updating to the latest version.I've also tried turning on other media servers like TVersity and Windows Media Player and none of my devices can detect any of those either, so there must be something wrong with my desktop's networking (but it can still get internet). I haven't made any changes to my home network since yesterday (the last time I used my media server).My desktop runs on a wireless network with a Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter, my router is a Netgear WGT624v4, and my cable modem is a Toshiba. I'm using Windows Vista 32bit.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been using the e4200 for about a week. So far, so good! However, a primary reason I purch it was the ability to share via USB across my network (Files and such). Read the approved USB drives that r compatible and although my specfic drive was not listed (WD, my Passport) I connected it to the e4200 and set a folder called "movies"to share. In this folder I have both bluray rips (25-32GB) and standard rips (5gb or less). Regardless of source, the content was not playable. It buffered like crazy. So, is it as simple as using an approved USB drive and I will be able to share appropriately?
The same folder plays great when connected directly to one of my media streamers USB drive, so don't think the drive/source is bad.

I am trying to establish a connection with an already existing IPsec VPN for file sharing. I click on the icon and get error messages when I type the correct username and password. I also entered the shared secret key correctly. I do not know where to enter the "group" name that coincides with the key I was given.

View 1 Replies View RelatedTrying to create a network for file sharing, as have upgraded the 'server' (part of a Workgroup, not a Domain) from WinXP to Win7 and experienced problems ever since. Ironically the problems haven't mainly been with sharing files between Win7 and WinXP systems, but between 2 Win7 systems. I bought a new Win7 laptop and tried to connect it to the server, but it hasn't had Read/Write privileges over the files in the Win7 server. Entering a username and password to gain access to the servers folders has not been a problem, and as far as I know, opening files such as documents has not been a problem either. However, when trying to save an edited document, access is denied, and if I try to open an executable file (this is necessary for a node installation), it prompts me for a network password. Every combination possible of username and password from the 2 systems (including '' or 'SYSTEMNAME' before the username) has not worked. I tried syncing the times which was apparently a previous problem, but to no avail. I am unable to access Local Security Policy, as the server is running off Home Premium. I have tried creating a new workgroup, removing and changing passwords, enabling guest access to the network through the Windows Resource Kit Command Shell, creating identical users on both computers, but nothing appears to have worked.

That worked okay, but often we couldn't see the file-holding computer, and would have to disconnect/reconnect to the internet.
We recently bought a NAS HD, which actually works a lot better than I expected. Unfortunately, we've learned recently that new employees are not always the most trustworthy. So this is what we are trying to do:We want to set up some type of way for us to save, store, and access files, which allows us to keep track of who has done what (access, save, copy, delete, print, etc.), preferably one where we can set up alerts if certain things happen (i.e. someone copies and pastes the entire thing, or attempts to delete). I shared some folders in my C drive and turned off password protected sharing in the network and sharing centre from control panel. However, when I use my Seagate FreeAgent Theatre + to access the files shared online, it keeps asking me to log in with a username and password. How to I disable this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedBefore I moved home I had one netgear router supplied by virgin media. On my home network I had my pc sharing it's printer and also some shared folders I.e. Music folder, my documents etc. Now I've moved I have had a new netgear box supplied by virgin media (which I call virgin media 7) which because of the shape of the building doesn't reach my bed room. To fix this I have had to connect my old netgear box (which I call virgin media 8) to the new one via 10m of CAT5e but now I can't access my shared printer or shared folders on my win xp pc which is connected to virgin media 7 via wireless if my vista laptop is connected to virgin media 8. I have tried looking in the setting for the option that makes it just act as an wireless extention to vm7 but they have removed the menu from the settings.

View 5 Replies View Relatedrecently i was trying to share files between two computers using a networking switch.(windows xp) I tried using network setup wizard on the host computer it only gave me two drive options f drive and the floppy disc drive. so i selected f drive to copy files. I inserted a cd and clicked next but nothing happened. i tried clicking format button and it asked me to 'insert a cd to f drive' so I avoided the format button.My computer has a backup system which someone installed and im not too sure about it so I was wondering if f drive was referring to the backup system (sort of looks like an external hard drive with lights on it connected to modem) or maybe referring to usb port. I did not try using my usb yet. The second pc I noticed did not have network setup wizard on control panel and was not sure if i needed it. I heard that a router has a firewall and is more safer than using a networking switch. at this stage i dont need internet connection for the second pc
View 1 Replies View RelatedIm on windows 7, I was able to view people on the network, able to access their public folders, but all of a sudden when I click on network, it just says at the top "Network Discovery and file sharing are turned off. Network computers and devices are not visible, Click to change..." I click on it and it doesn't do anything at all, same message comes on. SO i thought Ill change the settings, I see that Network Discovery is off so I turn them both on, save changes and then try again, same message appears, I go back to settings and see that they are switched off again, it doesn't stay on.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop and a laptop. I can't get wireless or a wired connection to the router so I need to use my laptop to connect to the internet in the short term. I have connected to the computers using an ethernet cable. I can get to local fine but no internet.
I have attempted to bridge the two connection but when I click on resolve it says there is an IP conflict. I can't see where.
I have also tried ICS but it keeps saying there was an error when attempting to enable it although I did manage to allow it to connect at one point before it reverted back to not working it still wouldn't allow the desktop internet access. All services are running.

*connected the 2 PCs with a Ethernet cable
*I can successfully share/transfer files between the 2 PCs
*When I found out the internet wasn't sharing, I manually changed the setting of the network adapter (IPv4) with the right ip/subnet
*I was unable to ping the two computer before I changed the settings of the network adapter.Even with being able to ping,the laptop still wouldn't let me share the internet.

But there's nothing in it.
