I have an older router, Linksys WRT54G, how crappy is this?. How much better speed/connection can I get from a new router? . If you have any suggestions for routers under $100 that would be a big upgrade from this please post it.

I have this WRT54G wireless router and I just updated the firmware and everything. But I ran a speed test and the wireless speed is less than half the speed when I connect my pc to the router with a cable. i.e. I have a 32 Mb connection and with cable I get +31 Mb, but with wireless I barely get 13 Mb.

I have a WRT54G cascaded to an E4200 v2. I am closest to the WRT54G and connected at 54. If I am in range of the E4200, can I force a connection to it instead of the slower router?

I have the WRT54G v2.2 router. I have Comcast internet service. Comcast has just increased their internet download speed to 50Mbps. With a wired computer (not wireless), connected directly to the router, the fastest internet download speed I get is 30Mbps. When I called Comcast's technical support, they are telling me I need a new router as the older routers can't handle these high internet speeds.

I can't get utube videos when I'm going through the router. I can get them if I'm on the modem only. The same applies to long PDFs, software updates, long virus definition updates, videos in general and graphics heavy websites. It just slows down eventually to a standstill and the download fails. As stated when the router is not connected the above items pop up or download reasonably quickly through the modem. We have moderate speed DSL.

I just ran some speedtests om my PC on the advice of my isp to see if my Linksys WRT54G router might be bad. As a result, I found that the router might not be entirely bad, but it might not be entirely good, either. I got .77 Mbps dowload and .17 Mbps upload on the first speedtest. I got .43 Mbps download on the second speedtest and the speed test hung hear the end. When I connected an IMac to the cable modem with an ethernet cable, the IMac ran strong. So the tech thought I should get a new router.
But wait a minute, isn't there a network adapter in the PC that the router talks to? Might the adapter be the problem, not the router? So I speedtested the wireless network to the IMac. That speedtest was fine, tiptop, like the ethernet direct connection test noted above. Did that tell me that the problem is in my PC network adapter, not the router? Then, I retested (speedtested) the connection on the PC and it was fine...excellent. Good up and down speeds, no hangs. Then, I checked the PC adapter (a Belkin). I saw three adapters on Device Manager, including the Belkin. I downloaded new drivers for the adapters (except for the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Minipoty Adapter - because it got a warning that the download software wasn't signed and might harm my computer).

This issue started about 6 months ago. I have noticed the following issues:
1. I cannot download large files. It starts downloading then it stalls.
2. I cannot download videos on Youtube and other video site to stream the video. In [URL] the test shows 100% complete but the test keeps on running and upload speed goes down.while running the upload speed test on [URL] sometimes it cannot connect to server to upload the file. When it connects to the server I get error saying that it cannot read the file it uploaded.Had Comcast come out to take a look at the cable and they claim that it was the PC's fault and not the cables's fault. I have the cable coming out of the modem to a linksys router ( WRT54G), then to my PC. I connected the cable directly from the modem to the PC and still had the same proble.
I have the following:
System
Manufacturer: Velocity Micro
Model: Edge V420
Processor: Intel core 2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83 GHz
Memory(RAM): *.00 GB

2 routers (only one in use at a time!):
(A) Linksys BEFSR41 v3.1 Etherfast Cable/DSL Router w/ 4-Port Switch
(B) Linksys WRT54GL v1.1 Wireless-G Broadband Router w/ 4-Port Switch
Both routers are set to provide DHCP.DSL modem: Verizon Westell Wirespeed B90-210015-04 I have no idea whether this modem is also a router, but everything used to work. OS: Windows 7 Professional N x64, SP1 My computer has two ethernet ports, but only one is in use at a time. I also have VMWare Workstation installed, so there are a couple virtual adapters in the mix, but VMWare is not running during any of these tests.Yesterday (Sat, 10-Mar-2012) I replaced my old router (A) with the new one (B). The A router has been working fine for many years; I just needed wireless access. After the initial setup, the B router worked fine, using hard lines connected to the switch ports, and the wireless access features (laptop and Android phone) - for about a day. It suddenly dropped the internet connection early this afternoon, Sun, 11-Mar-2012, ~1220hrs PDT. I heard it go out because I was streaming NPR at the time.Using the B router, my desktop computer (connected via a wire) can still talk to my laptop (wireless), but neither of them can see the internet. When I swap back to the A router (wires only), it now has no internet connection either! But the desktop and the laptop (both wired) can still see each other via the (wired) router. When I remove the router from the network and connect the DSL modem directly to my desktop computer, I have internet access; it works fine! But not if a router is in the circuit.
(1) Router B seems to work because my wired desktop and my wireless laptop can communicate locally.
(2) Router A still works because my desktop and laptop can communicate with each other using a wired network hosted by the A router.
(3) The DSL modem seems to work because my desktop has internet access when connected directly to the modem.
(4) Neither of the routers can communicate with the internet through the DSL modem.
I spent an hour in a chat with Verizon tech support. I've power-cycled everything. I've reset both routers to default specs and reconfigured them. I've reset the DSL modem via its button. I've used different cables. It appears that neither of the routers can successfully communicate through the DSL modem to the internet. But they both used to. Why would it just suddenly stop connecting through the modem?
Scenarios:
computer <-> DSL modem <-> internet | works!
computer <-> either router <-> DSL modem <X> internet | NoGo
desktop <-> either router <-> laptop | ping OK
ipconfig /all results when connected directly to the DSL modem (internet connected):

Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :

I was having problems with the speed being between 30-58 kpbs when going through the WRT160N router, whether its hooked up wired or wireless, the speed with both was extremely slow and wouldnt fully open pager or would take dsl day slow. I hooked up straight to modem and I got 100+ kpbs so I figured its not my ISP, so I read that upgrading my firmware might make it faster, so I upgraded and hit and held the reset button for 30 secs like it recommended but now the 192.168.1.1 wont open, I get a message saying it cant open this page

I just setup my new Cisco EA4500 and upgraded to latest firmware and signed up for my account.Local access to the router works fine and I see the Smart Wi-Fi admin/config interface However when I try to go to the following site: url...To access Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Tools, your router <em>requires</em> the <a href="url...Series Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Firmware</a> and you will need to associate your router with your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi account. On a computer or device connected to your router, open url... and follow the instructions. This requires that you enter the router password so have that ready.
However I see no way to perform the association step - my account exists and my router is configured.I am doing all this behind this router wi-fi network not remotely.

I just discovered that my wireless download speeds are 5Mbps, compared to 16Mbps if my laptop is connected directly to the modem or wired through the router. Uploads are 2Mbps either way. I have a WRT54GS v.6 with firmware version v1.52.8 which I updated today, completed by setting factory default through the router webpage after I discovered this discrepancy. The firmware update did not improve the download speed appreciably, if at all.Should the wireless connection be that much slower than the wired connection through the router? If not, what sort of issues could I be having to account for this?
I did just replace my modem when I discovered I was having erratic speedtests and that corrected that problem. That is when I became aware of the wireless issue, so not sure how long that has been the case. I have Charter's 16/2 HSI, living in a sparsely populated area with solid internet service. There is no external nor internal interference on this 2.4Ghz band.

I own a Linksys BEFSR41 v 3.1. I've been attempting to set up a home network with three computers; my main desktop running Windows 7 Pro x64, a netbook running the same OS and a box running Windows Home Server 2011 x64. The firmware listed for my router was initially 1.05.03.
My router has the issue with resetting its administrative password to the factory default and I've been unable to set up remote access to my LAN and home server. I decided to try updating the router's firmware, but none of the versions listed fit the one I have. The label on my router says v 3.1, but Cisco's site only has a 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, then skips to 4.1, 4.2, etc. The instructions on the site warn not to use a version for a different model, but are vague as to exactly what that refers to, as the model # and the version # aren't clearly delineated.
Anyway, I tried using the latest firmware and received the, "File Pattern," error. Although it didn't seem like anything had changed, I reset the router just to be safe, then tried the v 3.0 firmware update, thinking that the software was intended for all revisions of v3.0. This time it reported updating without a problem, so I reset the router again and went back to the admin page in my browser to check the firmware version listed. To my annoyance, the firmware is now listed as 1.05.00 - i.e. an earlier version than what was shipped on the router.
This means that not only is the issue of the password resetting not fixed, but any other fixes included in the original firmware are now wiped out as well and, needless to say, I still can't set up remote access properly.
How do I restore the firmware version? Neither a reset nor a, "Restore to Factory Defaults," does this. How do I find an actual update for the router? I can't find any mention of a v 3.1 on Cisco's site, let alone support information specific to this model and version.

I have upgraded the firmware on my Linksys BEFSR41 V4.3 router. On this router i used Statis IP (so DHCP enabled). This worked fine on my network, until this upgrade. Now when i try to ad another static IP , or when i want to change something in the Routing-tab, i get this message ' Wrong Gateway Input! It should be the same subnet with WAN IP'. Strange because i haven't changed anything in the settings.I already did a complete reset on the router, still the same problem.

I'm looking to upgrade my WRT54G as I have had NO luck in getting my Galaxy Tab to connect through it so far (can connect and get an IP address but can't get out to the web) and have had intermittent problems with my Blu-ray lately. I am looking for something with the best affordable range, live 3 floors down from the current one and get about 3/4 signal strength so there's not much interference it seems. I watch a lot of online content through Hulu, Netflix, and LMB games and share with 2 other people.I am looking at the E series, probably the E1200, 1500 or 1550 as they seem to meet my needs. Any users have any advice about the ease of install and use of either of these? Or would it be better to get a gateway as we are considering going from DSL to U-verse service, twice the speed for $2/month more

I have an old wireless router lying behind me and I want to use that old router as a switch. That old router is a knock-off,no-name router brand called "Gigafast" and the model number is WF19-CAPR. There are also variants to that router name as well. The router that I currently have is a Linksys WRT54G wireless-G router. I'm planning to upgrade the wireless router in favor of Wireless-N in the near future.I want to know how can I use that particular Gigafast router as a switch and I want to link that router up to my WRT54G router. The scenario goes as follows:
Cable internet connection ----> WRT54G router ---> Gigafast router (as a switch)
The IP address for the WRT54G router is 192.168.1.1, while the Gigafast router is 192.168.1.254. I may know by now that I have to disable DHCP on the gigafast router and I have to change an IP address to something that is "not in range" with the WRT54G router, am I right?I want to expand the number of ports, so I can connect with future devices such as a VoIP ATA adapter, a laptop and possibly an entertainment box (i.e. Apple TV or Boxee box)
