Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT54G Slows Down Speed And Makes Many Downloads Fail
Jul 25, 2011
I can't get utube videos when I'm going through the router. I can get them if I'm on the modem only. The same applies to long PDFs, software updates, long virus definition updates, videos in general and graphics heavy websites. It just slows down eventually to a standstill and the download fails. As stated when the router is not connected the above items pop up or download reasonably quickly through the modem. We have moderate speed DSL.

This issue started about 6 months ago. I have noticed the following issues:
1. I cannot download large files. It starts downloading then it stalls.
2. I cannot download videos on Youtube and other video site to stream the video. In [URL] the test shows 100% complete but the test keeps on running and upload speed goes down.while running the upload speed test on [URL] sometimes it cannot connect to server to upload the file. When it connects to the server I get error saying that it cannot read the file it uploaded.Had Comcast come out to take a look at the cable and they claim that it was the PC's fault and not the cables's fault. I have the cable coming out of the modem to a linksys router ( WRT54G), then to my PC. I connected the cable directly from the modem to the PC and still had the same proble.
I have the following:
System
Manufacturer: Velocity Micro
Model: Edge V420
Processor: Intel core 2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83 GHz
Memory(RAM): *.00 GB
[code]....

I just installed my new EA6500 and everything works ok I think, Netflix across my PS3 is ok, laptop connects, and smartphones connect. The problem is that my Internet connection to my desktop (wired) PC is slow as mud. My ISP is a fiber optic provider and although I'm not sure exactly what my connection speeds are my Internet connection has always been blistering fast. With everything other than two smartphones turned off my desktops Internet access is slow. How to get my speed back and still use my new router?

I have a WRT160Nv3 router connected to a CM100 modem. I noticed that over time, perhaps a day or more, the connection speed slows. Usually, unplugging the router for a while then starting it up again restores the speed as per my cable company's speed test. I have called the cable company and their tech support reports a good signal to the house.

I'm using Cisco EPC3825 cable modem for my home network, and wondered a thing, that if I set up modem to work in router-mode, my real connection speed slows down to around 5-7Mt/s, when using modem in bridged mode, my connection speed is close to 15-20Mt/s. My serviceprovider provides 200/10M speed to my modem, and they've checked, that modem is working with 204/10M speed, and computers works also, if using modem in bridged-mode.

do you think there would be a visible (or negligible) difference in internet speed if I used a hardware firewall as opposed to the router's inbuilt firewall? So assuming that all switches/ports were Gigabit Ethernet compatible (including the firewall itself), would it be a better idea to turn off the router/modem's firewall and use the hardware firewall, or would it be best to just stick with the router firewall? The reasoning behind this is that I'm not a big fan of Netgear... or their firewall system. After recent DDoS attacks (and IP address changes), I've decided to put a computer that was lying around to good use - Use it as a (Linux) firewall. iptables, here we come. - Yes, the Netgear router (CVG824G) has died a few times. Probably going to get upgraded to a NG CG3000, which uses (more or less) the same firewall system, I assume.

I previously owned a Linksys WRT54G V.8 wireless router, I upgraded my router to a DLink DIR-655 N Router in hopes to improve my internet download speeds. As a comparison I ran several online speed test for both routers. However, All test yielded similar results with minimal improvements. I also downloaded large files utilizing rapidshare's download manager, again with no improvement in download speedI thought moving from a G to an N router would improve my download speeds. The drivers on the DLink router are current

I have this WRT54G wireless router and I just updated the firmware and everything. But I ran a speed test and the wireless speed is less than half the speed when I connect my pc to the router with a cable. i.e. I have a 32 Mb connection and with cable I get +31 Mb, but with wireless I barely get 13 Mb.

I have the WRT54G v2.2 router. I have Comcast internet service. Comcast has just increased their internet download speed to 50Mbps. With a wired computer (not wireless), connected directly to the router, the fastest internet download speed I get is 30Mbps. When I called Comcast's technical support, they are telling me I need a new router as the older routers can't handle these high internet speeds.

Recently I upgraded my Internet speed at the ISP from 10Mbps to 25Mbps and the problem is that I am measuring only 15Mbps using [URL]On the day when the tech came out to install the new DSL modem, he noticed the difference and as part of troubleshooting, he bypassed the Linksys router and voila the net speed measured 25Mbps using speedtest.net.So, why my Linksys WRVS4400N V1.1.13 acts like a bottleneck in this case? I didn't have this problem at the speed of 10Mbps. The upload speed is OK, it is 5Mbs with or without the DSL modem.

When I connect directly to my dsl modem, I am getting better than 5 megabits/sec. which is what I should be getting for download speed. When connected thru the router, I am getting about half of that.My wireless connection speed is 54 megabits/sec, so that is ok. I cannot get any connection when I hardwire the connection from the pc to the router too.

For example, while testing this issue at thinkbroadband :: Download Test Files, I am able to download the 50 MB test file without any problems. However, every time I try to download the 100 MB test file, it stops at 65.3 MB. Every time I try to download the 200 MB test file, it stops at 38.2 MB

I am on a point to point internet connection that is rated at 2mbps. With my PC connected directly to the modem or through an old Airlink101 (model AR680W) router typical DL speeds are 1.9 to 2.4 mbps. However the Airlink router has to be reset 2 to 3 times per day.
I am trying to replace this router, however every router I've tried cuts the download speed in half (about 0.9 to 1.3 mbps). So far I've tried two Ultra Speed wireless N routers; two D-Link DIR 615's; and one Linksys E1200. When I talk to their tech support after testing they say that the routers must be faulty, but what are the odds of getting 5 bad routers from 3 different manufactures.
My IP does not know of any compatability issues with any routers.

My router makes a clicking noise once in awhile.
I thought it might be other peripherals in my setup, but it is definitely the router. It sounds like it over heats at times and is the type of 'click' that is expanding or contracting.

I just ran some speedtests om my PC on the advice of my isp to see if my Linksys WRT54G router might be bad. As a result, I found that the router might not be entirely bad, but it might not be entirely good, either. I got .77 Mbps dowload and .17 Mbps upload on the first speedtest. I got .43 Mbps download on the second speedtest and the speed test hung hear the end. When I connected an IMac to the cable modem with an ethernet cable, the IMac ran strong. So the tech thought I should get a new router.
But wait a minute, isn't there a network adapter in the PC that the router talks to? Might the adapter be the problem, not the router? So I speedtested the wireless network to the IMac. That speedtest was fine, tiptop, like the ethernet direct connection test noted above. Did that tell me that the problem is in my PC network adapter, not the router? Then, I retested (speedtested) the connection on the PC and it was fine...excellent. Good up and down speeds, no hangs. Then, I checked the PC adapter (a Belkin). I saw three adapters on Device Manager, including the Belkin. I downloaded new drivers for the adapters (except for the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Minipoty Adapter - because it got a warning that the download software wasn't signed and might harm my computer).

I saw one post recommending to changing the MTU from 1500 to 1400. That did absolutely nothing. My comcast internet is now slower than 14.4 dial up modem I had 16 years ago. The strange thing is I can sometimes download at over 2 mbps with torrents. It's mainly loading websites where the speed is so bad.

Ever since I started using iPads at the house I have had to reboot the router about once a week because the download speeds drops by approximately 90%. As soon as the reboot completes all is right with the world for about another week. During the course of the week, but not all at once, we will have 4 iPads, 3 iPhones, 2 laptops and one desktop(wired), a Verizon signal booster and house guests. I have updated the firmware.

I have FiOS and their supplied wireless router Actiontec #: MI424WR. I have equipment that uses the newer N signal so I purchased a Linksys E3000 Wireless-N Router. This is working great for my wireless home theater equipment but I am having problems with my wired speed. It has gone from 20 to 30 mbps to around 10 mbps. I have one of the LAN outputs on the Actiontec feeding the Linksys input, I have my computers plugged directly into the Linksys verses the Actiontec. This makes it easier to program the Linksys router. Since I am no longer using the wireless part of the Actiontec there really is no need to be plugged into it. Is there anything I can do get my speed back or will I have to plug the computer back into the Actiontec and move it every time I may need to make a change to the Linksys

Facing some troubles with my internet speeds, firstly the set-up is very simple, its just about 4 devices connected to a regular home router, 2 devices are connected via wireless and i am having trouble with my desktop PC.
Basically what keeps happening is that it fluctuates between 10Mb/s and as low as 0.8Mb/s, right now its at about 4Mb/s but i cant understand why this keeps happening, I am using a G wireless USB NIC and the laptop (the other wireless device) is fairly new so it should be an N wireless NIC, also it doesn't change my speed when it is being used for browsing and my neighbors wireless devices are also laptops with N cards. I believe that the router is G, having 3Mb/s at best which is far worse than normal.

When connecting wirelessly (5GHz) to the E3000 after a day or so the wireless connection starts loosing speed. I have Comcast and usually get 20-30 MB download connections. After a day or so I start to lose speed (down to 5MB) until I reboot the E3000. Then I resume 20-30MB download connections. My wired connections appear fine and don’t experience the slow down. I'm doing my speed test with [URL]
The wireless slow down seems similar to the old memory leak condition of old Windows OS’s. Called Cisco and they don’t have an idea. They had me change a few settings (channel info) but I’m pretty technical and don’t feel that will fix it.

Why my internet was so slow .90mbps. They got on my mac and changed the Ethernet setting to "manually" instead of "Automatic", then changed the speed to 10mbps instead of "autoselect". Now the internet is going at the 10mbps im supposed to be getting, but when i plug it into my router (wall>router>laptop) i get the .90mbps again. So do i how do i change the same setting on the router?

I have two computers, both of them running Windows 7. One of them has been experiencing an odd problem for about six months now, and now that school is out I have time to mess with it. When I try to do certain things, the download speed periodically drops to zero. Specifically, I've noticed it when using Firefox and Steam, but also for IE and a few other browsers I installed for the sake of testing. I know I'm not *losing* connectivity, because everything that isn't specifically downloading a file works fine. Skype calls work fine, Utorrent streams at a steady rate, but for some reason Steam and Firefox have speed graphs that look like the heart rate monitor of someone with a very weak pulse. It starts off strong, a nice solid 1 MB per second, and then after 10-30 seconds it'll slowly decline to 0, and sit there for anywhere from 10 seconds to half an hour before picking up to full speed again. I've tried reinstalling drivers, I've tried buying a new network card, I've tried running antivirus scans, and I've tried uninstalling my antiviruses. The only thing that works for sure is putting it into safe mode. In safe mode, the downloads proceed smoothly. I tried making a list of everything that ran in safe mode, and then rebooted into normal mode and closed each nonessential process and service, but that didn't work either.

I was wondering why are upload speeds so much slower then download speeds with residential IPS. I know downloading is alot more common then uploading something. Does it cost more or something, for the ISP to send information out.

I have just bought an E3000 router when my old router died last week. I am having two problems:
1. The data rate slows down after a period of time (long message trail elsewhere)
2. I cannot see everything on the network.
I have several Win 7 computers, two win xp computers, three NAS devices (linux based), and a printer sitting on the network, along with two switches to cope with all the traffic (not to mention iPods, iphones etc.)With my old router, I couold see everything plugged into the network from my main Win 7 computer. (note: the win 7 network map does not always work, but the windows explorer window of the network always showed everything). With the E3000 router, I can only see 1 or 2 of the devices on the network. If I reboot the router, then sometimes all of the devices appear on the windows explorer window (sometimes not)I am running a workgroup (not a domain) and i am not using win 7's homegroup because that will not work with the non-win 7 devices. Is there a setting that will see all of the devices in Win 7 (either on the router or on the computers). I suspect it is a router issue as it worked with my old Zyxel router.

I recently switched to cable with Comcast. I am getting 20+Mbps wired, but I only get 1 Mbps w/wireless download. I am getting 4+ upload via wireless. Is my set up wrong? I reset my modem and Internet worked fine without any other changes. I am planning on buying a modem (instead of leasing) should I buy a gateway? I didn't think this router was out dated yet.
