Router Or Hardware Firewall Makes Any Difference On Internet Speed?
Sep 8, 2011
do you think there would be a visible (or negligible) difference in internet speed if I used a hardware firewall as opposed to the router's inbuilt firewall? So assuming that all switches/ports were Gigabit Ethernet compatible (including the firewall itself), would it be a better idea to turn off the router/modem's firewall and use the hardware firewall, or would it be best to just stick with the router firewall? The reasoning behind this is that I'm not a big fan of Netgear... or their firewall system. After recent DDoS attacks (and IP address changes), I've decided to put a computer that was lying around to good use - Use it as a (Linux) firewall. iptables, here we come. - Yes, the Netgear router (CVG824G) has died a few times. Probably going to get upgraded to a NG CG3000, which uses (more or less) the same firewall system, I assume.
I can't get utube videos when I'm going through the router. I can get them if I'm on the modem only. The same applies to long PDFs, software updates, long virus definition updates, videos in general and graphics heavy websites. It just slows down eventually to a standstill and the download fails. As stated when the router is not connected the above items pop up or download reasonably quickly through the modem. We have moderate speed DSL.
I saw one post recommending to changing the MTU from 1500 to 1400. That did absolutely nothing. My comcast internet is now slower than 14.4 dial up modem I had 16 years ago. The strange thing is I can sometimes download at over 2 mbps with torrents. It's mainly loading websites where the speed is so bad.
I recently hooked my router up to my cable modem and was disappointing to find my internet connection halved or worse. Here's all the relevant information I could think of.
Cable internet through JCOM (in Japan) Router: WRT54GL V1.1 Modem: Motorola SURFboard SB6180
I have tried disabling the firewall on the router and adjusting the MTU. Both had zero affect.
Is there a possibility that installing a homebrew firmware like dd-wrt?
I'm trying to get a static IP because I'm hosting a team fortress 2 server. So on windows, I made my internal IP static and that worked. On my router(cisco EPC 3925) you can go to administration ,then management and it says connection mode: DHCP which you can change to Static IP. When you change it to static IP it askes you:[CODE]
I have an ASA 5505, firmware 7.2 (4). Configured ACLs, NAT, it's all working, but after a while it seems that running crashes, no longer makes the directions of NATs, the logs until they stop working. To resolve, I have to restart the ASA, and everything will work again.
Yesterday I was on my cousin's computer, and we had to remove the ethernet cord to connect it to mine as my wireless adapter wasn't cooperating with his internet. This was all fine and dandy until we had to plug the ethernet cord back into his computer. It locks everything up. If you try to open a program, it won't open. If a program is already open when the cord is plugged in, it stops responding within 15 seconds.I called my brother, and he suggested I run a virus scan via Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes, which I did. MalwareBytes found 5 problems, MSE found 1 additional one. They have all been removed, however this problem still persists. If you try to start the computer with the ethernet cord plugged in, it will allow him to put in his password, it will say welcome for about 3-5 minutes, then the screen will go black. The mouse is visible, doing it's motion to indicate that it's loading something, but it never achieves anything.
My SURF N300 router makes my internet signal very weak, 1/10 of what was contracted but it works perfectly with the cable connected directly to the computer, how can I configure it to work properly?
Yesterday I had BT Infinity fitted and my main PC (Wired) shows download speed of 70 megs but my laptop only gets around 4 megs download yet 5-6 megs upload.
I was playing around with my wireless router settings and I noticed something strange. When I set my computer to use AES encryption, my link connection speed became greater than 54 Mbps. Unfortunately, running some internet speed tests showed a consistent download speed of less than 400 kbps, although my upload stayed around normal at 4000 kbps. When I switched to TKIP encryption, my link connection slowed down to 54 Mbps (which I'm assuming means it switched to G mode rather than N).However, my speed tests resumed their normal fast speed of downloading at 10,000 kbps or higher, and upload around the same 4000 kbps range.
I have a Cisco E3200 Wireless N dual band router and external drive with USB2 support attached to it. The drive is shared across my network. My laptop has G WiFi adapter, so it can connect with 54Mbps only (which is ~6MB per second). I also have USB Wireless N adapter that supports up to 150Mbps.
When I copy my files from shared hard drive to my local folders it copies with speed 2.5MB/s and changing my WiFi adapter has no effect. It doesn't matter whether I am connected with 150Mbps or 54, the copying speed is the same - 2.5MB/s which is not enough for HD streaming; I have serious lag issues when I try to watch HD movies. When I disable WiFi and connect with a network cable, I see the speed is about 10-11MB/s - this is good enough. I can't understand what the problem is. Signal quality is 100%, security is WPA2 Personal.
Why is there no difference between 54Mbps and 150Mbps?
Why are files copied with a speed of 2.5MB/s in the 54Mbps network?
Hooked up router and my laptop is connected to internet. Tablet attempting to get my wifi says " obtaining IP address from linksys" buts never makes the connection. how to get connection and keeping a secure wireless connection?
Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet to Linksys Wireless G 2.4 GHz router model WRT54G v. 2
I thought it might be other peripherals in my setup, but it is definitely the router. It sounds like it over heats at times and is the type of 'click' that is expanding or contracting.
I have on Desktop wired to the router which is my main pc. When I access internet the website load really slow, but when I connect the pc directly to Comcast modem, it's blitz fast. My internet speed is 15 Mbps. I have another desktop and laptop. None of them have the problem. What settings I have to change to get back to speed I used to have before.I messed up some settings on the Cisco Connect and accidentally reset the router. After re-installing the router the problem started.
We are using ASA 5510 with internet link of 40 MB. we are facing issue of slow download speed. we have done all basic troubleshootings like: fixed duplex full on interfaces, checked CRC reeors on interfaces.
we are using around 40 L2L VPN tunnels on same ASA.
I recently inherited a Cisco 2911, that appears to have had Firewall rules imported into Externally Defined Rules. ACL's are currently allowing/disallowing traffic. However, there are no firewall rules configured. To meet compliance we need to have Packet Lavel Inspection (Firewalled) rules. There are two areas in the router, under ACL area, and under Security. What is the difference between these two Firewall areas? Are both areas providing packet level inspection? Can I build Firewall rules (within the Security area) to replace the ACL's?
Are the users' download speeds depend on the hosting company's owner's internet speed? Let say if I was running my own server with my internet speed 1mb and LAN 100mbps, are my clients' download speeds restricted to maximum 1mb of any content from my server?
I am building 20 pairs of failover firewalls for work and I was wondering from the users of the new code 8.3 - 8.4 if there are anything to watch out for. I know NAT changes from 8.2x to the newer 8.3 - 8.4 lines but would like to hear about real world thoughts on it.
I am working on my CCIE-Security on the side and right now the lab uses 8.2 but I am a good 6 to 9 months out, so I wonder if there will be a change in the lab to 8.3 before I try to go take it, what code to load and use on the production boxes.
I have ISA server 2006 sp1 and i can install many good software to management of network like gfi web Mon, soft perfect bandwidth manager and many more.
And I have an ASA 5520 AIP-SSM module so what security management Asa can give and what security feature it has and also so I will convert my network firewall from MS ISA to CISCO ASA.
My internet provider give me 600kbps which is 0.6mbps i believe Wireless B's maximum speed is 11mbps N's is 300-450.Will I have any diffenece on internet speed between b and n? I use telus from vancouver they say I have 6mbps speed internet.
We are moving from a different vendor to ASA 5520s. So far my "training" for Cisco consists of s Cisco press book, some white papers and guides, this website, and a bunch of mistakes. So, I have what is probably a pretty basic question for most folks.
What is the difference between Firewall Access Rules and ACL/ACE? And when to use which?
for example: on my ASA 5520s I've set up an Interface for my internal LAN: 172.16.x.x., a DMZ 192.168.2.0/24, and an interface for the Internet side. The 5520 is set up as a routing firewall betwen my internal lan, DMZ, and Internet.
If I want to allow my internal users Internet access for http and https would I use a Firewall Access rule? For most of my rules allowing outbound access from my 172 LAN and DMZ and inbound access to devices in my DMZ can I mostly utilize the Firewall Access Rules?
I've recently bought a 3G, 32MBit/sec (DC-HSPA+) connection with a ZTE MF680 Modem and a Dovado 3GN router. When I connect the modem directly to the computer I get around 20-25MBit/s which is great and acceptable. Problem is when I connect through the router I get max 3Mbit/sec.Connected via ethernet cable or Wireless (n/b+g+n) gives the same low speed results I have used the same APN (bredband.tre.se) in my router as is on the modem I have upgraded to the latest firmwares on the Router (latest firmware 5.0.5-3)I have swaped my modem to another one, to the Huawei E372 (latest firmware 11.203.05.00.00).
I have swaped my Router to another Dovado 3GN and updated to the latest firmware The modem is placed 2meters away from the router to reduce interference I have removed all my anti-virus and firewalls and I believe the router has no firewall and prior to that did a virus check, also with spyware doctor. I changed the SIM card, and got another from the ISP, no luck. The router's support says they recieve full speed (like 20Mbit) with the same hardware and firmware combination The 3G modem is exactly in the same place where I do the speed tests Speedtests done with [URL] and [URL] Pings are quite high in both cases when doing tracerts but while doing the speedtests they are between 45ms and 75ms?I have moved the config to another room, same results I have tried using no security on Wifi and also disabling WiFi. I have tested with 4 differnet computers with totally diffferent configs
I currently have a 802.11 G router of 54mbps (its claims its a super G 108 mbps tough). My notebooks have 802.11 N built in. Im thinking of upgrading my router to a 802.11 N 300mbps.However, I know that this may be irrelevant unless I have a internet conection that can achieve such speeds. So how do I test my internet speed to see if G is bottlenecking?
I have had the DIR-825 since the beginning of the year connected to AT&T DSL Internet 3GB. I just upgraded to their 6GB download speed and didn't see any change in speed and suddenly I couldn't view my SlingBox anymore outside the house. I connected one computer directly to the modem, ran the AT&T speed test and got >5GB download and @700 upload. Wired via 1GB network back to the router, ran the speed test and it dropped to @4GB download and 120 upload.
I called AT&T, they checked everything, and said there was nothing wrong. I then spent almost an hour on the phone with D-Link including getting passed to 3rd level support. I knew something was wrong when the guy told me that since it was only a 1GB router, I shouldn't expect to get faster than 1GB Internet download.
The router is still running the 1.00 firmware and these are the changes they made me try so it's still sitting at these settings:
- Change the WAN from Auto 10/100 to 100 only.
- Change MTU to 1482 in my PPPoE settings
- Change Firewall Settings to turn SPI off. He said the router is still providing a firewall though.
He wanted me to download the 1.01 firmware but I balked and he said it probably wouldn't do any good. It ended with him wanting me to call AT&T back and set the modem to bridge mode. I then need to call them back and set the PPPoE again. This 3rd level support guy was very rude and am hoping to avoid calling them again.
Before I go through the hassle of calling AT&T and trying this bridge mode, or has the Elite 6GB service from AT&T and are having it work correctly.
I keep having pop-ups from my McAfee informing me that an unknown device is attempting or has connected to my network which I don't understand as my wireless router is encrypted with a password. My neighbours aren't likely to be technical enough to break this and the signal isn't exactly strong anyway so is unlikely to reach much further outside, that being said I always mark them as intruders. Now I continuosly get pop ups saying "a device you marked as introduer has connected to your network. Mcafee has blocked the device from accessing your pc". or words to that effect. what's the difference between this 'network' and my internet? I don't really understand what it's saying, I haven't set up any network that I know of... none of my computers are 'linked' so to speak.
when the wireless router is plugged in to my acer desktop computer (running on windows 7) it will cause the desktop to reboot itself numerous times what do i need to do to make this stop so i can hook up wireless to the laptops i have?
