802.11 G Router Of 54mbps - Test Internet Speed To See If Able To Get N?
Feb 12, 2012
I currently have a 802.11 G router of 54mbps (its claims its a super G 108 mbps tough). My notebooks have 802.11 N built in. Im thinking of upgrading my router to a 802.11 N 300mbps.However, I know that this may be irrelevant unless I have a internet conection that can achieve such speeds. So how do I test my internet speed to see if G is bottlenecking?

My laptops wifi speed drops from 54Mbps down to 1Mbps which is often causing me to disconnect from web application etc I am currently using a usb wifi dongle and the speed does not drop from 54Mbps which has made me believe the problem lies with the laptops internal wifi settings, after re installing my internal wifi's driver to a more recent version the problem is still the same, I am using a lenovo t61 laptop and my wirless router is a D-LINK DSL-240R, how to fix my internal wifi so that its speed is a constant 54Mbps as my 2 other laptops and notebooks are all at 54Mbps, because of this I believe this is an isolated problem.

I did a simple speed test comparing my EA3500 and Linksys WRT54GL. I used DSL Reports for the test. I was quite shocked and am wondering if the difference is due to the poor wireless driver in the Classic firmware that was updated in the Cloud firmware. Here are my numbers: EA3500, Classic firmware Download average 475 kb/s Upload average 725 kb/sLinksys WRT54GL Ver 1.1 (latest firmware) Download average 3250 kb/s Upload 725 kb/s
Needless to say I have gone back to my trusty WRT54GL until Cisco decides if it will update the Classic firmware and give us 2nd class Cisco customers the same hardware the 1st class Cloud customers have. Time will tell.

I installed an E1200 router today. It automatically upgraded the firmware to the latest when I did this. Everything went smoothly.
I connected my desktop wired and my laptop wireless. I ran three different speed tests: Xfinity, speedtest, and cnet. All three showed 25-35 Mbps download and 4-5 Mbps upload. That is what my old router had too. So far, so good.
I ran the speed test that came with the E1200 router. It showed 0.30- 0.66 Mbps download and 0.58 - 2.09 Mbps upload. Note the decimal points!
Bottom line: The E1200 seems to be working fine, except that its internal speed test seems to be broken, at least when testing from a wired machine.

I did a network test with Passmarks Performancetest. I'm running a 10/100 network with all devices connecting at 100Mb. On Performancetest there are 2 tests to run for Network speed, TCP and UDP. The TCP speed test came back with an average 62000kbps (7.5Mb), and the UDP was 89000kbps (10.8Mb). As I'm running a 100mb network, shouldn't the results of been higher?

I just installed a WRT320N for someone's home network, with the intent of providing better speed for network printing.
Unfortunately, all four of his n-capable Windows computers will only connect at 54mbps. Four different computers (Win7, Vista, XP), each with a different brand/model of n-capable network adapter.
I suppose I could try setting the wireless to n-only instead of "mixed". However, he's got a couple g-only devices as well, so that wouldn't work.
I tried updating the firmware to latest/greatest - no effect.

My E3200 is having issues with keeping the speed up on wireless G. I'm about 20 feet away from the E3200 and there is 1 6in wall between me and the E3200. My connection will not hold 54Mbps, its constantly dropping to 36Mbps, even down to 5.5Mbps faily often. Around 30 feet away there i will lose internet connection yet my laptop says excellent connection to wireless.

I have an SMCWBR14S-N4 router, and I'm using a usb wireless adapter that says it supports n, and promises speeds of 150 mbps. My signal strength is excellent, yet my speed is only 54 mbps. This is the only wireless connection on my network, I have 2 PCs connected at 100 mbps, and a Dish DVR connected at who knows what speed.
I've been trying to read questions and answers from others online, and I keep reading that ISP speed plays a role. How does my ISP's speed affect my wireless network's speed? (Plus, I run speedtest.net all the time and my download speed is usually 260 mbps.)
But my question is simply why is my speed so low and what can I do about it?

Question re: DIR-655; Hardware ver A4; Firmware version 1.32NA
During bandwidth tests to several sites (principally speedtest.net) I get ping times of 10-11 ms, download speeds of 12+ to 17+ mbps but failure on upload tests using my DIR-655.
When I bypass the 655 and test directly with my cable modem, all (including upload) tests work reliably and consistently.
I have swapped the two ethernet cables involved as well as replacing both with new cables but the results are the same (uploads fail with 655 and work without it)
I have seen several postings over the the last year with this same problem but have never seen any comment from D-Link, or a solution from any reader.
Not that it should have any bearing, but I have TA785GE-128M motherboard and am running Windows 7 (patch current) on COMCAST
is this problem acknowledged by D-Link and is there a solution?

why I would get only 54mbps on an 802.11n connection with laptop sitting right next to the router with 100% signal strength according to the router? Setting are mixed mode: 802.11n & g, Enable channel scan, Best Transmission Rate, Auto 20/40 width.
Could it be due to WEP security (need to use this for my kids Nintendo DS to connect)
I don't care about getting 300mbps like a lot of other are talking about. I just want more than 54mbps!

I have encountering a problem with a new installation at my clients side recently. We have a 5508 wlc and a bunch of Laps connected to it.Recently we associated a 1142ap to the same controller. The issue we are facing is that , the client laptops that are connected to THIS ap are showing maximum of only 54mbps in their network information dialogue box.Initially i couldn't understand why this could happen. But after a bit of research , i came to know that this could happen because of ``unticked`` data rates in the controller , or because of not using wpa2 with aes as the security standard for N-series access points. Now i have enabled all data rates in the High Throughput section as well as enabled the correct encryption standard. But still the issue persists. We have checked with multiple laptops , to rule out the possibility of a faulty n/w card

I've recently bought a 3G, 32MBit/sec (DC-HSPA+) connection with a ZTE MF680 Modem and a Dovado 3GN router. When I connect the modem directly to the computer I get around 20-25MBit/s which is great and acceptable. Problem is when I connect through the router I get max 3Mbit/sec.Connected via ethernet cable or Wireless (n/b+g+n) gives the same low speed results I have used the same APN (bredband.tre.se) in my router as is on the modem I have upgraded to the latest firmwares on the Router (latest firmware 5.0.5-3)I have swaped my modem to another one, to the Huawei E372 (latest firmware 11.203.05.00.00).
I have swaped my Router to another Dovado 3GN and updated to the latest firmware The modem is placed 2meters away from the router to reduce interference I have removed all my anti-virus and firewalls and I believe the router has no firewall and prior to that did a virus check, also with spyware doctor. I changed the SIM card, and got another from the ISP, no luck. The router's support says they recieve full speed (like 20Mbit) with the same hardware and firmware combination The 3G modem is exactly in the same place where I do the speed tests Speedtests done with [URL] and [URL] Pings are quite high in both cases when doing tracerts but while doing the speedtests they are between 45ms and 75ms?I have moved the config to another room, same results I have tried using no security on Wifi and also disabling WiFi. I have tested with 4 differnet computers with totally diffferent configs

I have had the DIR-825 since the beginning of the year connected to AT&T DSL Internet 3GB. I just upgraded to their 6GB download speed and didn't see any change in speed and suddenly I couldn't view my SlingBox anymore outside the house. I connected one computer directly to the modem, ran the AT&T speed test and got >5GB download and @700 upload. Wired via 1GB network back to the router, ran the speed test and it dropped to @4GB download and 120 upload.
I called AT&T, they checked everything, and said there was nothing wrong. I then spent almost an hour on the phone with D-Link including getting passed to 3rd level support. I knew something was wrong when the guy told me that since it was only a 1GB router, I shouldn't expect to get faster than 1GB Internet download.
The router is still running the 1.00 firmware and these are the changes they made me try so it's still sitting at these settings:
- Change the WAN from Auto 10/100 to 100 only.
- Change MTU to 1482 in my PPPoE settings
- Change Firewall Settings to turn SPI off. He said the router is still providing a firewall though.
He wanted me to download the 1.01 firmware but I balked and he said it probably wouldn't do any good. It ended with him wanting me to call AT&T back and set the modem to bridge mode. I then need to call them back and set the PPPoE again. This 3rd level support guy was very rude and am hoping to avoid calling them again.
Before I go through the hassle of calling AT&T and trying this bridge mode, or has the Elite 6GB service from AT&T and are having it work correctly.

My ISP is Sky who I use for phone calls and internet, the line to my my house was installed by BT several years ago. I live in a fairly rural area and have never had more than a 1.5mb connection.
Two months ago a neighbor who was repairing his guttering accidentally broke the main phone line coming from the pole directly to our house (the ladder he used was left unattended and it fell over catching on the wire). The line broke in the middle of the length that runs from the pole directly in front of our house to the connecting shackle on the house fascia board, on the first floor.
I connected the broken wire back together, I only have one line in, so all that needed to be soldered were the white and orange wires. The other colored wires I cut flush. The remaining three steel core wires i used as holding wires. Everything was heat shrink sealed, insulation taped up, heat shrink over the whole lot and then more insulation tape put over the whole join, allowing around three or four inches over run at each end of the join. Afterward I did a quiet line test (17070 option 2) and the line was good. My internet speed was as per usual, 1.5mb.
Last Wednesday I was checking my email and web pages kept timed out, i logged on to the router and checked the speed I was connected at. My speed was 560kbps / 56k. After several router resets the speed was still not any higher. I did a quiet line test again and there was a considerable amount of line noise.
As it had rained a few times since my repair to the wire I thought it best to check to see if any water had gotten in. Unfortunately, even with all the insulation water had indeed got in. There was a score mark on the cable and that was the obvious route of entry. Upon opening the repair back up I could see the copper wire inside the orange line had turned black. I had to cut back the damaged line about 10 inches total, to get shiny copper cable and remove the scoring on the outside of the cable. I re-joined the line as I had done before. A quiet line test was good, but my internet speed remains at 560kbps / 56k.
I bought a new ADSL filter, and have tested the router directly in the master test socket without my phone extension, no difference in internet speed at all, and like I said the quiet line test is perfect.
Before I bite the bullet and get BT to come and renew the cable (which I am going to get done, when my neighbor can afford it) is there anything that I could have overlooked, or is it possible that the water has damaged something i.e. the Sky router or other parts of the cable?
