Sky Router: Internet Speed Issues After Line Repair
Oct 24, 2011
My ISP is Sky who I use for phone calls and internet, the line to my my house was installed by BT several years ago. I live in a fairly rural area and have never had more than a 1.5mb connection.
Two months ago a neighbor who was repairing his guttering accidentally broke the main phone line coming from the pole directly to our house (the ladder he used was left unattended and it fell over catching on the wire). The line broke in the middle of the length that runs from the pole directly in front of our house to the connecting shackle on the house fascia board, on the first floor.
I connected the broken wire back together, I only have one line in, so all that needed to be soldered were the white and orange wires. The other colored wires I cut flush. The remaining three steel core wires i used as holding wires. Everything was heat shrink sealed, insulation taped up, heat shrink over the whole lot and then more insulation tape put over the whole join, allowing around three or four inches over run at each end of the join. Afterward I did a quiet line test (17070 option 2) and the line was good. My internet speed was as per usual, 1.5mb.
Last Wednesday I was checking my email and web pages kept timed out, i logged on to the router and checked the speed I was connected at. My speed was 560kbps / 56k. After several router resets the speed was still not any higher. I did a quiet line test again and there was a considerable amount of line noise.
As it had rained a few times since my repair to the wire I thought it best to check to see if any water had gotten in. Unfortunately, even with all the insulation water had indeed got in. There was a score mark on the cable and that was the obvious route of entry. Upon opening the repair back up I could see the copper wire inside the orange line had turned black. I had to cut back the damaged line about 10 inches total, to get shiny copper cable and remove the scoring on the outside of the cable. I re-joined the line as I had done before. A quiet line test was good, but my internet speed remains at 560kbps / 56k.
I bought a new ADSL filter, and have tested the router directly in the master test socket without my phone extension, no difference in internet speed at all, and like I said the quiet line test is perfect.
Before I bite the bullet and get BT to come and renew the cable (which I am going to get done, when my neighbor can afford it) is there anything that I could have overlooked, or is it possible that the water has damaged something i.e. the Sky router or other parts of the cable?

I've had the E3000 installed for several years and a few days ago saw my download speed drop by 80%. Trouble shooting with the Cable provider ended up with connecting directly from the PC to the modem and the speed issue was corrected. I don't see any recent changes in firmware, no new programs.

Wireless internet connection stops working after anywhere from 10 minutes to two hours, a message pops up telling me it is "impossible to connect to my preferred wireless network", and then it fails to detect any wireless connections at all. The strangest thing is that when I try to "repair" the connection, which used to work, the computer immediately shuts down and restarts itself. It also seems like when I attempt to download something, like a movie for example, the connection fails right away, while if I'm just surfing the web it usually lasts around an hour before stopping. And when I restart the computer again it works perfectly fine at first, like right now, but eventually does the same thing.

First-I use a vpn service.I had a netgear router connected to my main computer and had no problems at all.I got rid of the netgear router connected the DIR-615 to my main pc.Configured the router, and everything works ok.I get a signal anywhere in the house, and speeds are fine,as far as the laptop.I dont use a a vpn service on the laptop.Just the regular cable connection. No problems at all.I have my main pc hard-wired to the router. When I connect my main pc using a vpn service my line speed its cut down 80%.I had my main pc connected to a netgear router with nothing else, and my vpn service worked fine.I dont understand why my main pc is not working with the vpn service. The only configuration I did was to forwarded a port to utorrent, and that was not a problem. It works, and port is open. The problem is my speed is cut by 80%.

Using WRT110 router, running XP, SP3 on both laptops, one a Dell and one an old Toshiba. Never any problem with the Dell (and Gateway before that), nor the iPad, Acer notebook, etc. However, the Toshiba keeps losing the connection to Internet (even though the icon says the connection is excellent). DH has to continually Repair in order to connect. I even reformatted the Toshiba, thinking it was something in the Registry. Now that it is back up and running (and all programs updated), it STILL periodically has to be repaired in order to connect.

The WS-X68xx series line card has a fabric of 40Gbps and a 16 Port 10GE has a 4:1 oversubscription rate. The WS-X6908-10G has a fabric speed of 80Gbps and has a 1:1 oversubscription rate.
If I mixed the 68xx and 69xx series line card, do I get 80Gbps for the 6900x and 40gbps for the 68xx line card? Or would the 69xx series line card be downgraded to 40Gbps?
From my understanding, the 68xx series has a DFC card and thus the fabric speed operates independently.

Every time I start Windows XP, I see an icon of Internet connection being established, and then a connection error icon with a pop-up window. When I click on it, I see the connection window with a notification that no IP address has been assigned. In order to get an Internet connection, I have to click "repair" every time. I have downloaded and used TCP/IP and Winsock repairs without result. I use WIN XP SP3 and run updated Avira and Comodo. I am aware of damage left behind by deleted malware but don't know where to look.

My error message states that "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Registering with DNS".I have no internet connection on my HP PC, which is why I am typing this on my laptop. On the HP I am running windows xp with sp3.I connect to a cable modem provide by Time Warner. This problem started yesterday, so I have been utilizing both computers with one internet connection, or plugging and unplugging the cat5 cable.I have run Microsoft Essential Full scan, as well as Malwarebytes's Anti-malware.Now I ran both of those in Safe mode, and picked up no bugs. I have Avast as my antivirus software, and the message I receive on that is that "Avast will not be able tp protect mail/news (error 10050). I am unable to turn on the web shields for Avast.I have manually entered the IP addresses into my HP from my laptop, all the way thru DNS servers. It still won't connect.I tried using the Internet explorer diagnostic tool, and it came back and said that I have a winsock issue.

Yesterday I bought a new wireless adapter (Belkin Surf Micro, it was the only one for sale nearby). I installed it from the disk, and it worked for around a minute, then... nothing. This kept happening every time with several reboots and reinstalls inbetween.I thought maybe the adapter was faulty, so I installed it on my Mums laptop. It worked great.I have tried flushing the dns, and some other command prompt based things suggested on other sites, but to no avail. But here's the thing that strikes me as funny: Even when it connects to the internet for that minute or so I cannot ping the router, even though it says on the router page (viewed from another computer) that I am definately connected to it. I also cannot ping google or anything but myself.

I have a computer that is running Windows XP and is using a Linksys wireless card and their connection software. (It's not my computer, and I can't recall the name of the software.) The computer can't connect to the internet, but it can connect to the wireless network. When you try to repair the connection you get back that the computer cannot refresh the IP address, and thus repair the connection.A few extra things, the owner seems to be under the impression that another computer has kicked him off and has somehow broken his connection due the fact that it is used for gaming. These problems occurred when said computer had no internet connection at all. (Wired or wireless, everything was unplugged.) I just would like some kind of verification of the fact that another computer, under general circumstances, can't break another's connection out of thin air. I have tried resetting card, routers, and some other things. I am working on trying other wireless receivers on the computer and a different router tomorrow. I will update when that is finished.

I have a WRV210 router setup with WPA personal-AES encryption...SSID is turned on. The issue is that workstations lose connectivity to the internet and to a mapped network drive on the server. When this happens I find that the wireless status shows "connected", along with excellent signal strength. It never happens when logging on, just after so many minutes. The simple remedy is to repair wireless connection but we would like to not have to resort to this behavior every day. Further, I found that within the repair connection sequence that deleting the address resolution protocol table, brings the internet and the ability to access a mapped network drive back. I even used a program called arpfreeze to assign static ip's to the arp table and I still had to repair wireless connection. It does not matter where the workstations are placed, whether sitting 50 feet away or 5 feet from the router, the workstations lose the ability to access internet and mapped drive while showing "connected" and excellent signal strength. Otherwise, we are looking at running ethernet cables through the building (Not easy).

I've recently bought a 3G, 32MBit/sec (DC-HSPA+) connection with a ZTE MF680 Modem and a Dovado 3GN router. When I connect the modem directly to the computer I get around 20-25MBit/s which is great and acceptable. Problem is when I connect through the router I get max 3Mbit/sec.Connected via ethernet cable or Wireless (n/b+g+n) gives the same low speed results I have used the same APN (bredband.tre.se) in my router as is on the modem I have upgraded to the latest firmwares on the Router (latest firmware 5.0.5-3)I have swaped my modem to another one, to the Huawei E372 (latest firmware 11.203.05.00.00).
I have swaped my Router to another Dovado 3GN and updated to the latest firmware The modem is placed 2meters away from the router to reduce interference I have removed all my anti-virus and firewalls and I believe the router has no firewall and prior to that did a virus check, also with spyware doctor. I changed the SIM card, and got another from the ISP, no luck. The router's support says they recieve full speed (like 20Mbit) with the same hardware and firmware combination The 3G modem is exactly in the same place where I do the speed tests Speedtests done with [URL] and [URL] Pings are quite high in both cases when doing tracerts but while doing the speedtests they are between 45ms and 75ms?I have moved the config to another room, same results I have tried using no security on Wifi and also disabling WiFi. I have tested with 4 differnet computers with totally diffferent configs

Im thinking of upgrading my router to a 802.11 N 300mbps.However, I know that this may be irrelevant unless I have a internet conection that can achieve such speeds. So how do I test my internet speed to see if G is bottlenecking?

I have had the DIR-825 since the beginning of the year connected to AT&T DSL Internet 3GB. I just upgraded to their 6GB download speed and didn't see any change in speed and suddenly I couldn't view my SlingBox anymore outside the house. I connected one computer directly to the modem, ran the AT&T speed test and got >5GB download and @700 upload. Wired via 1GB network back to the router, ran the speed test and it dropped to @4GB download and 120 upload.
I called AT&T, they checked everything, and said there was nothing wrong. I then spent almost an hour on the phone with D-Link including getting passed to 3rd level support. I knew something was wrong when the guy told me that since it was only a 1GB router, I shouldn't expect to get faster than 1GB Internet download.
The router is still running the 1.00 firmware and these are the changes they made me try so it's still sitting at these settings:
- Change the WAN from Auto 10/100 to 100 only.
- Change MTU to 1482 in my PPPoE settings
- Change Firewall Settings to turn SPI off. He said the router is still providing a firewall though.
He wanted me to download the 1.01 firmware but I balked and he said it probably wouldn't do any good. It ended with him wanting me to call AT&T back and set the modem to bridge mode. I then need to call them back and set the PPPoE again. This 3rd level support guy was very rude and am hoping to avoid calling them again.
Before I go through the hassle of calling AT&T and trying this bridge mode, or has the Elite 6GB service from AT&T and are having it work correctly.

do you think there would be a visible (or negligible) difference in internet speed if I used a hardware firewall as opposed to the router's inbuilt firewall? So assuming that all switches/ports were Gigabit Ethernet compatible (including the firewall itself), would it be a better idea to turn off the router/modem's firewall and use the hardware firewall, or would it be best to just stick with the router firewall? The reasoning behind this is that I'm not a big fan of Netgear... or their firewall system. After recent DDoS attacks (and IP address changes), I've decided to put a computer that was lying around to good use - Use it as a (Linux) firewall. iptables, here we come. - Yes, the Netgear router (CVG824G) has died a few times. Probably going to get upgraded to a NG CG3000, which uses (more or less) the same firewall system, I assume.

I currently use a Linksys E3200 and mainly direct connect it to my laptop. My current ISP is with Insightbb to which I use their 20.0 (20 Mbps) service. For the past 6 or 7 months I've had little to no issues with my internet connection until about a week ago. While directly connected to the E3200 I used to get up to about 20/21 Mbps at a constant rate. Yet now I'm lucky to get up to 13/14 Mbps. Also, the speed will sometimes fluctuate; shooting to as low as 8 Mbps and shooting as high as15 Mbps. I can verify that my ISP is not the issue. I've directly connected my laptop to the modem with success and received a healthy speed of up to 23 Mbps with no fluctuations. The problem only occurs once I directly connect to the router. Attempting to connect wirelessly shows the same, if not worse, problems.
I've attempted numerous factory resets and used the 30:30:30 method to no avail. I've tried power cycling the modem, router and laptop. I've tried disconnecting the router for up to 10 minutes. I've upgraded the firmware to the most recent update. I've tried setting a static IP. I've tried imputing the MTU manually. I've tried setting a MAC address clone. I've tried turning on/off UPnP. I've tried release/renewing my IP address. I've tried flushing my DNS. All of which I power cycled the router after each and every attempt.

I've recently purchased a WRT160N router, and I'm using it in conjunction with a WMP54G wireless PCI card. I've set the router up to my requirements, and can get a stable wireless connection.. but internet speed seems excessively slow. While I'm able to get up to around 4MB/s transferring files over the network, running speed tests, it consecutively shows my download speed to sit around 400KB/s, whereas I'm able to get a steady 1.1MB/s on another desktop that is wired. Disabling the LAN adapter on that computer, and connecting via wireless, brings down the speed that that computer is able to get to around 400KB/s as well. Hence, I don't think it's my wireless cards, but something to do with the router itself.I'm also experiencing lag spike issues in online games, which I can only attribute to the current wireless setup, because I've previously had no issues with it. All relevant ports are forwarded, so that is not an issue. After doing some Googling on the subject, someone had suggested running SpeedGuide's TCP Optimizer, and changing the RWIN - I ran it, and set it to the 'optimal' settings, and after a reboot the wireless seemed fine - I was getting just a tad under what I should (about 950KB/s).. but after a short while, it just went back to 400KB/s. After further investigation, it seems that Vista automatically changes that RWIN value to optimize network traffic.. but I never had this issue with my old wireless gear, so I can only assume that the way Vista is reacting is based on the way the router is interacting with it.
