View 1 RepliesI just discovered that my wireless download speeds are 5Mbps, compared to 16Mbps if my laptop is connected directly to the modem or wired through the router. Uploads are 2Mbps either way. I have a WRT54GS v.6 with firmware version v1.52.8 which I updated today, completed by setting factory default through the router webpage after I discovered this discrepancy. The firmware update did not improve the download speed appreciably, if at all.Should the wireless connection be that much slower than the wired connection through the router? If not, what sort of issues could I be having to account for this?
I did just replace my modem when I discovered I was having erratic speedtests and that corrected that problem. That is when I became aware of the wireless issue, so not sure how long that has been the case. I have Charter's 16/2 HSI, living in a sparsely populated area with solid internet service. There is no external nor internal interference on this 2.4Ghz band.
I am using Linksys wirelless G router, will my wired speed on desktop increase when I change to a wirelless N router for laptop and ethernet for wired desk top? I don't need anymore wireless speed but am wondering if I upgrade will my wired desktop pick up more speed.

View 7 Replies View RelatedFor a customer of mine I've installed 8 WAP 200 access points with an SF302 switch. The Access point are powered with POE. All seems to function properly: the clients are simple Android device and the connection appears solid.. We've a good roaming between access points (not seamless of course but is ok) and no particalur problems, also because the network is used to drive very LOW data (no internet): the clients opens a tcp connection to the server and sends only a keep alive packets over this connection.. Then sometime the server send a very small amount of data (some byte) to activate the display of the device and show a question.. the clients reply with some other byte of data and so on.. During an event of 3/4 hour we can do this 12/14 times, so the network load is nearly 0....
Last night the system suddenly stopped working: ALL clients (300) lost connection from their access points at the same time! How this can happens? The only reason that I can imagine is a power loss on the switch...
download is now 25.24 up is 3.97 should this be corrected?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was playing around with my wireless router settings and I noticed something strange. When I set my computer to use AES encryption, my link connection speed became greater than 54 Mbps. Unfortunately, running some internet speed tests showed a consistent download speed of less than 400 kbps, although my upload stayed around normal at 4000 kbps. When I switched to TKIP encryption, my link connection slowed down to 54 Mbps (which I'm assuming means it switched to G mode rather than N).However, my speed tests resumed their normal fast speed of downloading at 10,000 kbps or higher, and upload around the same 4000 kbps range.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Cisco E3200 Wireless N dual band router and external drive with USB2 support attached to it. The drive is shared across my network. My laptop has G WiFi adapter, so it can connect with 54Mbps only (which is ~6MB per second). I also have USB Wireless N adapter that supports up to 150Mbps.
When I copy my files from shared hard drive to my local folders it copies with speed 2.5MB/s and changing my WiFi adapter has no effect. It doesn't matter whether I am connected with 150Mbps or 54, the copying speed is the same - 2.5MB/s which is not enough for HD streaming; I have serious lag issues when I try to watch HD movies. When I disable WiFi and connect with a network cable, I see the speed is about 10-11MB/s - this is good enough. I can't understand what the problem is. Signal quality is 100%, security is WPA2 Personal.
Why is there no difference between 54Mbps and 150Mbps?
Why are files copied with a speed of 2.5MB/s in the 54Mbps network?
Is there a more detailed log or information from the router?I'm still having massive network variations, even with everything wire connected.
View 1 Replies View Relateddo you think there would be a visible (or negligible) difference in internet speed if I used a hardware firewall as opposed to the router's inbuilt firewall? So assuming that all switches/ports were Gigabit Ethernet compatible (including the firewall itself), would it be a better idea to turn off the router/modem's firewall and use the hardware firewall, or would it be best to just stick with the router firewall? The reasoning behind this is that I'm not a big fan of Netgear... or their firewall system. After recent DDoS attacks (and IP address changes), I've decided to put a computer that was lying around to good use - Use it as a (Linux) firewall. iptables, here we come. - Yes, the Netgear router (CVG824G) has died a few times. Probably going to get upgraded to a NG CG3000, which uses (more or less) the same firewall system, I assume.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI spoke with two different support agents with a well respected routermanufacturer. I got two different answers - No surprise. So, I ask the forum, what file transfer speeds should I expect when transfering a good sized amount of data (10gig) from wired PC on a 10/100/1000 network router to another PC via wireless connection 20 (feet away + two walls) using 802.11N.Both PC's are new / newer with win 7 64 bit. - Current transfer speeds - Both wired and wireless internet download speed tests are arond 21 meg per second. Both PC's wired and wireless get around 3.7 meg per second internet download (speed tests). At this point - no real difference in internet access between PC's and wired / wireless.
However, when I copy a file from PC1 to PC 2 (both wired) I get 68 megs per second. When I transfer the same data set (10 gig) from PC1 wired to PC 2 wireless, the data transfer falls to 3.7 meg per second. One rep told me to expect about 80% of my wired rate or about 54 megs per second (when using my 802.11N 300meg) equipment. The other rep (same company) told me that the 3.7 meg per second ia about the best I can expect. A transfer rate of 3.7 megs per second simply does not appear to be a reasonable speed given that all my wireless equipment is pretty new and supports numbers that are much higher
My computer is currently wired to the internet, but I'd like to make it wireless. I already have a wireless router and PCI card. The problem is that the wireless internet cuts my speed in half. Is there a reason for this? Is wireless inherently slower?

I have a problem with my download speed. I'm supposed to have a speed of 60 MBPS and when I collect my computer direct to the modem I received it but with my e2000 router, the 3 computer connected to it can't reach more than 30 MBPS. View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a 2 month old e3000 with the latest firmware. (1.04 i believe) I have run speedtests from wired and wireless machines on my network. All of the wired connections show a speed of around 15Mps (which is consistent with my providers guaranteed speed) but when I test any of the wireless connections I get somewhere between 3 and 7 Mps. I get the same degradation in speed when I stand directly next to the e3000.
Other then SSID and Passphrases I have everything set to the default settings. I have rebooted multiple times with no change. The e3000 is mounted on a 2x4 with several feet of clearance all around and is also located in the coolest part of the house. I am using Speedtest.Net for all the tests.
Yesterday, I changed my old belkin n1 router with Linksys WRT54GL router. Ever since them my upstream speed is really slow. I did the speedtest its like .5mbit. My downstream speed is just fine. However the 5 wireless computers all get 16mbps which is pretty good for them. Windows tells me that its a firewall issue and I currently can't use two programs, spotify and steam. They both have firewall issues, even if I turn off my firewall which is the windows one. I also have avast, and when I turn that off, still no good. I used OpenDNS, stopped using that flushed my DNS, that didnt work. I tried to optimize my computer settings, by changing various values in Regedit. All of this has done nothing. I have basically had these problems since the fresh install. All of my drivers are up to date.

When I direct connect my PC to my cable modem, I can get very near the 7mb/sec rate advertised by my ISP. When I connect the modem to this router, then connect to the pc to the router, the speed drops to between 2-3mb/sec. All tests performed several time using dslreport.com speed test website. The result is very repeatable, so I figure it has to be some delay introduced by the router. I can't see to find any place in the router configuration to do performance tuning. I'm not using any firewall rules except for the default rules. Why I'm seeing a greater than 50% decrease in internet throughput using this router?

I am using a Cisco RVS 4000 to test a new 10M/10M internet connection. I'm having a small problem performing the ISP's speed test (speedtest.cavtel.net). The download test consistently gives me 10Mbit/s, full speed for the connection, however the upload speed is usually about 5.5 Mbit/s. My ISP has been onsite and has checked the lines and tested directly, and we have determined that if connected directly we can test to full upload speeds, but when the RVS is connected, we cannot get full speed.
We've tried different cables, reseting to factory defaults, updating firmware, changing port settings, and toggling most of the other setting on the router. Some settings do have a minor effect on the upload speed, but nothing that gets me back up to 10Mbit/s.
I did notice that there appears to be no way to set speed and negotiation settings on the WAN port. Perhaps I am missing it, because that seems like a possible culprit.
Otherwise, the only only thing I can think of is a warranty return to determine if the unit itself is defective.
I installed an E1200 router today. It automatically upgraded the firmware to the latest when I did this. Everything went smoothly.
I connected my desktop wired and my laptop wireless. I ran three different speed tests: Xfinity, speedtest, and cnet. All three showed 25-35 Mbps download and 4-5 Mbps upload. That is what my old router had too. So far, so good.
I ran the speed test that came with the E1200 router. It showed 0.30- 0.66 Mbps download and 0.58 - 2.09 Mbps upload. Note the decimal points!
Bottom line: The E1200 seems to be working fine, except that its internal speed test seems to be broken, at least when testing from a wired machine.
I'm using Cisco EPC3825 cable modem for my home network, and wondered a thing, that if I set up modem to work in router-mode, my real connection speed slows down to around 5-7Mt/s, when using modem in bridged mode, my connection speed is close to 15-20Mt/s. My serviceprovider provides 200/10M speed to my modem, and they've checked, that modem is working with 204/10M speed, and computers works also, if using modem in bridged-mode.
