WNDR4500 Adding A Dedicated Firewall To Network

Feb 22, 2013

I'm considering adding a dedicated Firewall to my network. Here is what my home network currently consists of:

-Comcast Arris TM722 Broadband Modem
-Netgear WNDR4500 N900 Gigabit WiFi 450/450 Router
-2 x Netgear GS108NA 8 Port Gigabit Switches
-1 x Netgear WN2500RP Universal WiFi Range Extender
-4 Pc's running Windows 7 Home Premium
-Netgear ReadyNAS NV+
-3 x Blu-ray players - Sony & Oppo (2 wired, 1 connected by WiFi)
-Sony PS3 (wired)
-Onkyo TX-NR905 AVR (wired)
-Sony KDL-55HX800 TV (wired)
-2 x Vizio E400 Seies Smart TV's (1 wired, 1 connected by WiFi through Netgear WN2500RP Range Extender)
-HP Photosmart Printer

All wired connections using Cat6 ethernet cabling. So, I want to setup a Gigabit Firewall between the modem and the router (and just use the router as the wireless access point) but I don't want to take a hit on my bandwidth speed.I was thinking of the Netgear ProSafe FVS318G for this.

Netgear WNDR4500 - Adding Wireless Router To Existing Network?

Sep 23, 2012

Added a wireless router to our office here so that people with laptops could get on the net without having to physically plug in. Right now it is ok, but the router is acting as it's own DHCP server instead of our server here assigning out the IP's.

The main gripe I have is I can only login to the router through my phone and not through my computer. How can I achieve this. We have multiple offices that all connect through a VPN. I would like our sys admin to access the router at his location as well.

Do I just turn off DHCP on the router and thats it? The model is Netgear WNDR4500.

Setting Up A Dedicated Firewall Machine On A Switch?

Jan 29, 2012

this company uses Vyatta firewalls, which are dedicated boxes. So I was sent home with a Dell PowerConnect 5448 (a 48 port switch) with the project of getting a similar setup going with the computers i have at home. I have the switch set up, everything's on VLAN1, management IP is 192.168.2. 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway is 192.18.2.254, and the switch is properly sharing the my internet connection between three computers. That part was easy. So now, one of them is going to be either reformatted and set up with Vyatta, or I'm going to virtualize it. Either way, I need to route all the traffic through that firewall box before it goes to anything else on the switch so I can have a functional firewall.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5510 - Get Traffic Through Box To 4 Dedicated Servers

Apr 17, 2013

Recently moved into the hardware firewall space and have a ASA 5510. Having some issues trying to get traffic through the box to my 4 dedicated servers. all the servers have static IP's and are connected to a private switch into one of the ethernet ports on the firewall(0/2). Public internet connection into another(0/0). 1 of my servers has a connection to the management port, and the public switch, and this is the one im trying to do the configuration on.

Im unsure what to set the IP address of my "outside" interface as. need to have RDP,FTP, HTTP traffic going to each of the 4 servers independently, pretty sure i can get the rules in place to allow this, but cant seem to get any traffic to go through the firewall to any of the other 3 servers.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5505 - Adding New Rule For Network?

Mar 30, 2011

I have an asa 5505 and I would like to adding a new rule for a network, however it was added, it seems it would be inactive. I have two inside network,192.168.12.0/24 (name: lanA) and 192.168.99.0/24. (name: lanB) I have the following in the running-config:

access-list lanB_acl line 1 extended permit ip 192.168.99.0 255.255.255.0 any
access-group lanB_acl in interface lanB_interface

But when I tried to reach a host in the lanA, the packets are dropped. I configure the asdm, which shows this on the LanB interface:

1 lanB_network | any | ip | permit (hits 344)
2 any | any | ip | deny

and I checked the packet tracer with: tcp, source: 192.168.99.57:10460 dest: 192.168.12.2:443 and it shows that the packet has been dropped by the last 2. 'implicit any any ip deny' rule, in spite of my access-list rule (access-list lanB_acl line 1 extended permit ip 192.168.99.0 255.255.255.0 any) preceded it, and active.

The lanB and lanA interfaces are the same security level 100, and I can reach the outside/internet from 192.168.99.57 Is it possible that I have to reload the rules or something like in order to apply? Or I missconfigured something?

Dedicated 2nd Wifi Network Or Change Qos Settings?

Oct 22, 2012

In my restaurant, we currently have a password protected wifi network for customers and staff. The load is typically light, so it's worked fine. Now, we're putting in a new cloud-based point of sales system, which effectively means that I need a totally uninterrupted, high quality wireless signal running to the POS terminal (in this case, an iPad). If the terminal is sharing that connection with 15 customers Facebooking on their iPhones, I imagine we'll have some signal issues. I'd rather not install a second network dedicated to the POS terminal. Are there any other possible solutions, i.e. a way to give priority to the terminal over other connections? A way to "split" the existing network so only a portion of it is available to customers?

FYI, current network speed is 20/mbs 2/mbs, and the POS terminal requires a minimum of 7/2 mbs.

Dual Nics For Accessing Network And Dedicated NAS?

Nov 24, 2011

I'm trying to setup a server with two nics, one of which is connected to the network, and the other connected to a NAS via crossover. I've never done anything with subnetting, but I was thinking I could just set the main nic to 192.168.10.20 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and the other to 192.168.10.250 with a subnet of 255.255.255.240 and the nas nic set to 192.168.10.251

Am I thinking through this right, or is there a better way to do this?

Internet Port Broken On WNDR4500?

Dec 1, 2012

I recently swapped a router out for an old one to check an internet problem (to rule it out basically) and when I tried swapping the newer (better) one back in it networks fine (ie computers can see/stream off each other) but it doesnt recognize as being plugged into the internet.

After doing a factory reset via routerlogin.net I still have the same problem. The only thing I can think of is maybe the port got damaged? (The ethernet cables all work fine).

My process for hooking up the new router in case I was doing something wrong:

Unplug cable modem power, swap all the cords, on router while cable modem was rebooting and then once modem connected I turn on router. Did I need to restart the PC as well? Is that why this is screwing up?

Netgear WNDR4500 / 802.11n And 802.11ac Compatibility?

Mar 31, 2013

I know that N operates on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, whereas AC operates only on 5Ghz. Yet many AC routers advertise as operating on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. So what happens when you connect to an AC access point on 2.4Ghz? Does that operate using 802.11n?

What happens when you try to connect to an 802.11ac access point using an 802.11n client on 5Ghz? Is this possible, or are legacy connections only possible at 2.4Ghz?

I have a Netgear WNDR4500 (802.11n, dual band) currently that I am very happy with. I figure I will eventually switch over to AC. I'm trying to determine if I would be better off simply replacing the N unit with an AC unit, or running both (perhaps WNDR4500 to handle 2.4Ghz clients, AC access point to handle 5Ghz clients, or similar).

WNDR4500 - Shutting Down Wired PC Disconnects All Wireless Connections

Oct 30, 2012

So I have this Netgear N900 (WNDR4500) wireless router. I have one PC connected via ethernet cable to the router and 4 wireless devices connected wirelessly. As long as the ethernet-connected PC is turned on, the other wireless connections work fine, but as soon as I shut down that PC, the internet connection is lost (although I can still connect to the router via the wireless laptops - router login page - so I know the router's wifi part is working). Why would my PC need to be on? Does the PC handle any of the internet connection for the router?

I hope I don't need to keep my PC running 24/7 so that the other devices can access the internet!

Adding A Second Network?

Sep 28, 2012

I'm a newb at this stuff and hope someone will take pity on me and point me in the right direction? In a nutshell, we run a SBS2008 server at work with 20 users. Our company has a domain name which, via DNS hosting is pointed to our static IP. Email address's are handled via the server using Exchange 2007. Documents and files are stored on a data drive on the server (lets call it Server 1). We have now setup a second business with a different domain. I now have 10 users who will need access to the files on Server 1, but will run under a different domain (and need different email addresses) and need to have access to files stored on Server 1 and the new Server 2. The current setup is simple. ADSL comes into the server room and goes to a modem/wireless. From there it goes to the server which handles the DHCP. The server is in turn connected to a 24 port switch which then feeds the workstationsI have access to purchase another server and whatever hardware is required. No amount of Googling matches my scenario hence my question. What I'm really after is a mudmap showing setup or the right way to set this up

Fiber Dedicated Connection From ISP?

Sep 22, 2012

I have been doing network and computer work for a small public library which will soon be needing to change internet providers. Our planned route will be to have a fiber connection directly from our local ISP, but we need to figure out the best network hardware to accommodate this network connection. We currently have two HP 1810-24G switches connected to a Sonicwall TZ100 firewall as the primary router. The firewall/router connects to the internet with Cat6 connected to a fiber optic media converter. The media converter is on lease from the current internet provider so it will be gone. Our new ISP has said that they can provide a fiber connection in our building to an SFP port termination, which is their recommendation. Ideally, this would be an SFP port in a router or firewall. However, there seems to be very few options for routers with SFP and they're all incredibly expensive compared to a network switch with SFP. While I imagine we could just terminate the fiber optic connection into a cheaper switch with SFP and connect to that with the firewall, our network is further complicated in that we have a CISCO LifeSize video conferencing system which ideally runs best without running directly through the firewall, which can cause some lag and glitches in the signal it seems. I don't believe it's possible to have the router WAN interface connect through to the ISP with a static IP and PPPoE sign on as well as another network devices using the PPPoE and a separate static IP address, am I correct?Have I just over-complicated this network issue, and everything should just be run behind the existing firewall, or should I be able to find a different firewall/router or switch that can connect with SFP to the ISP?

DNS Redirect To Dedicated Connection?

I redirected all DNS traffic to the DSL line as an experiment with no decrease in web browsing speed. e are rural and speeds fluctuate considerably during the day. It seems like it's more of a response issue than a bandwidth issue. I would like to order a 2Mbps dedicated line from Comcast to use for DNS and VOIP traffic only, the DNS resolution times should be faster on that connection. There would be several tenants in this building using it for that purpose. The secondary purpose of this line would be for backup internet connectivity
