WRT54G2 - Monitor And Limit Amount Of Bandwidth Everyone Uses?
Sep 10, 2012
So lately this week, one rogue user from the boarding house has been downloading(possibly torrenting)/streaming to his/her heart's content resulting in extremely slow connections for everyone else. I've been using an Android app to list all devices connected to the network, and one-by-one, manually disconnected each one to find the problematic, bandwidth-hogging IP. I've found that said user continued to use up bandwidth even up to the wee hours of the morning.
I managed to find his/her IP address, I know I could just block sites/ports via the router's control panel but I guess it's not that simple because: a.) Whoever setup the wireless on our floor forgot the username/password combo(not even the landlady knows) b.) I've asked management about asking for access to the router. Being the IT student on the floor, I guess I'll take the responsibility of at least limiting the rogue user's bandwidth so everyone else on our floor has a fair share.
So my question is: is there a way to limit an IP/application's bandwidth usage via a non-router control panel method, without having to do a hard reset on the router? I have tried in vain to use the Android app I used, but all it takes is a router reboot to disable it (said user knows how to reset the router). It's been days since we've had a stable connection for legitimate schoolwork usage because of this one IP that's using up all the resources.
The router on our floor is a Linksys WRT54G2 and my operating system is Windows 7 64-bit.

Recently I bought a new router and it works great but I'm still having bandwidth issues. On average there are 6 devices running at once, but only two of which do anything that takes up a significant amount of bandwidth and the router is a good distance away from my computer and my brothers (we do online computer gaming). Is there any way to increase the amount of bandwidth we get up here with out having to move the modem and router?

I have 1812j with ISDN line.Recently Accidentaly the ISDN Router was dialing every 1 minute because of the config was not right. It was too late to find out.And I got the expensive bill from the telephone company.
The idea is I want to stop dialing if the dialing cost is over than appropriate amount. For example, if dialing cost reach to $200, then stop dialing and alert to the system administator by E-mail or something. There is the way to limit the timed-out but this won't work for that.

I have a Linksys WRT54G2 wireless router that is used in an office setting. We have, of course, set a password to access (wireless) the internet and local file sharing network from a laptop. Occasionally, however, we have guests that want to access the internet. Is it possible to give the guest a temporary password that is different than the main one? Also, is it possible to limit the guest to only the internet and not the local file sharing network?

I show up at this business. They have about 40-50 systems. They have a 2003 AD server with a router, and 4 switches. There is also a dvr system on the network for cameras. Each switch is daisy chained together. Everything is working correctly except for the fact that the network drops about 5 times a day. Before they called us, they would just unhook one switch and plug it back in and it would work. At first, we took that switch and exchanged it with another switch in a computer lab to see if just the computer lab goes down. If it did, then that switch was bad. That wasn't the case, the whole network still went down. We had already left, but when we go back, our first choice will to see if there is a loop anywhere within the switch that will flood the network. Then, we were going to see if there was a switch that was getting a lot of traffic on the network to try to track it down. How can u monitor the bandwidth on the switches? They are 24 port switches. The switch is fs750/24 switch.

I came across some free bandwidth monitoring software by Solarwinds while doing some reading on other sites. I installed the software and now im stuck at setup. The Softaware is asking for...
Ip Address/Hostname
SNMP Version
Community string
I'm assuming the IP Address/Hostname would be my computers IPv4 on the network and as far as the SNMP Version goes im not sure, I can either choose from SNMP v1/2c or v3. For the community string, I'm assuming its Public but im not completely sure. When I attempt to go to the next step is says the credentials test failed So obviously something I entered is incorrect.
Note: this is on my own home network. Im using a Comcast all in one router and modem.

Is there a way to limit a whole PC windows XP, or a certain program to use only a certain about of your total internet connection bandwidth? For example, I have 5 PCs in home all one the same ISP connection. I have one PC that I am trying to backup files online but I can only run it at certain times due to the backup program using ALL upload/download speed. And that makes every other PC super slow.

I have 4 laptops (WiFi), 2 desktops (LAN), xbox (LAN), and dish receiver (LAN) that are all connected to the internet using the method between the brackets. Recently i am running out of bandwidth, and what i am looking for is a freeware that i can install in one of the computers that could tell me which IP or MAC address used how much internet.I have read several articles: some articles point me to softwares which only monitor the computer that they are installed. Other posts argued that such thing can only be done through the main router. I know my router doesn't have such feature. I use SMC router.

I want to switch to a slower ISP because of financial constraints (specifically downgrade from cable to DSL), so I'd like to set up my Windows XP computer so that it downloads and uploads at the same speed that the slower ISP does. That way I can kind of "try before I buy" for a week or so, to get an idea if I can live with the slower speed before disconnecting from cable and incurring a disconnect charge. I was told that some software that limits your bandwidth also may cause distortion in video or audio streams, so I'd like to avoid that.

Should I monitor:

I'm wondering if there is an easy way to monitor how much bandwidth is being consumed at any given moment for a home network.specifically, for the incoming/outgoing internet connection. My network is as thus:
DSL Modem -> Wifi Router (Linksys E4200v1 - PPPoE enabled here) -> Gigabit switch -> 2nd Wifi router (D-Link DIR-815 - DHCP disabled, repeats same SSID and password)
Most devices are connected directly into the switch, with one computer hard-plugged into the DIR-815 (I will eventually change this, as the 815 only has 10/100 ports).Basically, I want to easily be able to check how much up/down data is being sent for my internet connection. This means that I cannot use a program on a computer (I've used DL Meter before. Works great, but limited to a single computer).
The Linksys E4200v1 is using standard firmware, but I'm not opposed to loading DD-WRT onto it (was the original plan anyway, just never got around to it), if DD-WRT has this capability.Nice to have feature: Ability to see which devices are consuming what part of the bandwidth. Not necessary, but would be a cool feature.Alternatively, if there is a cheap (like $100 or less deal) box that can interface, say, between the E4200 and the switch, that can do this, that would work as well.

I am using ASA 5505 cisco firewall as a transparent firewall. I have assigned ethernet 0/0 as outside interface and ethernet0/1-7 as inside interface. There are 3 departments in office. So, i connected ethernet 0/1 to Dept A, ethernet 0/2 to Dept B and ethernet 0/3 to Dept C. Now, I want to limit bandwidth to each department, e.g, 1 Mbps download/upload to Dept A, 512 kbps download/upload to Dept B and 512 kbps download/upload to Dept C. So, how can i do this in ASA 5505.?

I have a 20MB internet connection, with a 100GB cap. My mother works at home, with some employees. Adding home and work, 8 people use the internet all the time. Lots of Youtube videos, streaming netflix, iTunes downloading, and so on.I wanted something to:
1) Manage this cap. It's over too soon, and we're left with a poor internet connection until the end of the month - like 500kb.
2) Something to manage two internet connections.
I was thinking about a dedicated router - I currently use a WRT54G V8, which is nice, but it has some issues handling the traffic when the internet is in its full glory. I heard about pfSense, and some searches on Google tell me it's possible to do both options using it.
