Cisco :: Use MRTG To Monitor DSL Connection Bandwidth Usage?
Jan 24, 2013
I want to use MRTG to monitor my DSL connection bandwidth useage.
Should I monitor:
ATM 0/3/0 or
Dialer 1 or
Virtual-Access 2
ps. is the 'BW' aspect of show interfaces important? I have 56Kbit/sec on Dialer 1, 100,000 Kbit/sec on Dialer 1 and 1024Kbit/sec on ATM.

I have 4 laptops (WiFi), 2 desktops (LAN), xbox (LAN), and dish receiver (LAN) that are all connected to the internet using the method between the brackets. Recently i am running out of bandwidth, and what i am looking for is a freeware that i can install in one of the computers that could tell me which IP or MAC address used how much internet.I have read several articles: some articles point me to softwares which only monitor the computer that they are installed. Other posts argued that such thing can only be done through the main router. I know my router doesn't have such feature. I use SMC router.

After upgrade C7609S routers from:c7600rsp72043-adventerprisek9-mz.122-33.SRD4.bin to c7600rsp72043-adventerprisek9-mz.150-1.S3a.bin I lose interface with ip mpls configure form the MRTG SNMP pooling system. cfgmakre not see any more that interfaces (intrefaces fall on ($if_ok) filter). Other interface which not have a ip mpls configured is normally visible in the our MRTG monitoring system. From my site it is looks like that interface when I configure ip mpls go to unknown state for MRTG. That interfaces are not any more ethernet type.I can reach interface with configure ip mpls only with manual configure *.cfg file with ifindex value.

The other day 3rd party supplier ran some stats on our Gigabit link between 2 Cisco catalyst 3750Gs.now the graphs produced showed only a Maximum output of about 100Mbps ( 5 minute intervals) yet when I do a show interface it shows a lot more always 150Mbps and more. So I did my own Perl script doing an "sh interface" every minute and then graphed it, and the results were a lot different to the MRTG results.Questions: I know MRTG uses SNMP to get the traffic is there a bug in the SNMP, what OID does it use?does the "sh interface" give the correct results?

In the company I work for, employees' internet traffic is monitored, and if you download too much, you get a warning, and later there might be more serious consequences. But they don't tell how many kilobytes are too much, and they also don't tell, how much of your "kilobyte budget" you have spent already. So I want to be able to monitor my own internet activity. However, all the programs I found so far watch the whole traffic going through the network card, which, beside the internet usage, includes LAN and mail server communication, which don't count. So, I'm looking for a free portable program that can monitor specifically my browser's internet usage, i.e. the number of kilobytes sent and received by the browser application. It is imperative that the program should be portable, or at least installable without administrator privileges, because I don't have that.

I am trying to figure out how I can see what my monthly total bandwidth usage is. I have been trying to find a way to monitor my internet usage so I can make an informed decision on ISPs. one has a cap but allows ESPN3, the other is the opposite on both accounts. everything I have been finding look like good products however they all look like they are for an individual device. I have about ten devices and not all would have the ability to have these programs on them. I have and old xp machine that really is only good as a paper weight, If I had to I could make it a proxy but before I do that and create a major bottleneck I wanted to see if there were any other options

I have a small Network at my office, all done by myself with my limited knowledge. I have 9 systems connected thru physical LAN and 1 laptop connected through Wireless (from my internet router)I have distributed the internet connection openly, not using a proxy server. Anyone plugs in will get Internet on their system through the DHCP.Recently I found that internet usage been crossing the limits.sniff/monitor internet/bandwidth usage system wise.I have a internet router (Linksys/Cisco WRT 120N) from which the cable goes to an un-managed 8 port switch.I have three different areas in my office, so I pulled single cable to each of these areas and there I used another un-managed 8 port switch to distribute the LAN to the systems.

Is there any way to monitor and plot graphs against the data usage for each local pool configured on Cisco 7609. I have a CISCO 7609 that is acting as RAS for PPPoE Customers and have mulitple local pools (/24) configured on it. What is requried is a graph that shows data usage of each pool separately ( I can plot usage against each IP but that is not requried here, I need data usage (MRTG) for each complete local pool).

I show up at this business. They have about 40-50 systems. They have a 2003 AD server with a router, and 4 switches. There is also a dvr system on the network for cameras. Each switch is daisy chained together. Everything is working correctly except for the fact that the network drops about 5 times a day. Before they called us, they would just unhook one switch and plug it back in and it would work. At first, we took that switch and exchanged it with another switch in a computer lab to see if just the computer lab goes down. If it did, then that switch was bad. That wasn't the case, the whole network still went down. We had already left, but when we go back, our first choice will to see if there is a loop anywhere within the switch that will flood the network. Then, we were going to see if there was a switch that was getting a lot of traffic on the network to try to track it down. How can u monitor the bandwidth on the switches? They are 24 port switches. The switch is fs750/24 switch.

My home network has two routers. My setup is...modem to router 1, then router 1 to router 2. is there a way to track the bandwidth usage on the two routers. My ISP says that I'm going over my bandwidth allowance and that's because in my household, we are hardcore gamers, netflix, and internet users. Router 2 belongs to my sister-in-law, and router 1 is mine. But I want to know which and more importantly, "WHO" is using more of the bandwidth.

Currently We have several Active Directory Domain at several Technical High Schools. These are used by us as a it educational unit(s). The Tech School System's IT Department has a fiber wan between the schools that allows communication between these units. We wanted to interconnect the unit's Active Directory's with Trusts or by combining them into one forest. However I am wondering How much bandwidth that alone would require? There make be some file access between units but not on a daily basis since the units are separate from one another. How much bandwidth do you think this would require?

I have a dell poweredge 830 (3.0 dual core pentium, 2gb ram, 2x160gb hdd in raid 1, dual port intel gigabit card). I'm trying to find a router OS that logs bandwidth by ips on the lan. I tried untangle and clearos neither of which have a feature (or one that I can find) that logs the bandwidth by ip. Apparently pfsense has a package you can install but I have never been able to get pfsense to work on this pc, it always errors in one way or another (on the 2.0rc3 I can't access the web page, it says it is missing a file).

I came across some free bandwidth monitoring software by Solarwinds while doing some reading on other sites. I installed the software and now im stuck at setup. The Softaware is asking for...
Ip Address/Hostname
SNMP Version
Community string
I'm assuming the IP Address/Hostname would be my computers IPv4 on the network and as far as the SNMP Version goes im not sure, I can either choose from SNMP v1/2c or v3. For the community string, I'm assuming its Public but im not completely sure. When I attempt to go to the next step is says the credentials test failed So obviously something I entered is incorrect.
Note: this is on my own home network. Im using a Comcast all in one router and modem.

So lately this week, one rogue user from the boarding house has been downloading(possibly torrenting)/streaming to his/her heart's content resulting in extremely slow connections for everyone else. I've been using an Android app to list all devices connected to the network, and one-by-one, manually disconnected each one to find the problematic, bandwidth-hogging IP. I've found that said user continued to use up bandwidth even up to the wee hours of the morning.
I managed to find his/her IP address, I know I could just block sites/ports via the router's control panel but I guess it's not that simple because: a.) Whoever setup the wireless on our floor forgot the username/password combo(not even the landlady knows) b.) I've asked management about asking for access to the router. Being the IT student on the floor, I guess I'll take the responsibility of at least limiting the rogue user's bandwidth so everyone else on our floor has a fair share.
So my question is: is there a way to limit an IP/application's bandwidth usage via a non-router control panel method, without having to do a hard reset on the router? I have tried in vain to use the Android app I used, but all it takes is a router reboot to disable it (said user knows how to reset the router). It's been days since we've had a stable connection for legitimate schoolwork usage because of this one IP that's using up all the resources.
The router on our floor is a Linksys WRT54G2 and my operating system is Windows 7 64-bit.

I matched the traffic statistics on one of my Cisco ASA site-site tunnels with the OID:1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.171.1.4.3.1.1.25.4142 (cipSecTunHistInOctets). I was real proud of myself for a few days until I checked the history and found the OID wasnt working. After some troubleshooting I found that the last four digits (4142 in this case) change whenever the tunnel drops and re-establishes itself. Any way to collect tunnel utilization history on an ASA with SNMP? Is there a different OID I can use thats based on the endpoint IP?

I'm wondering if there is an easy way to monitor how much bandwidth is being consumed at any given moment for a home network.specifically, for the incoming/outgoing internet connection. My network is as thus:
DSL Modem -> Wifi Router (Linksys E4200v1 - PPPoE enabled here) -> Gigabit switch -> 2nd Wifi router (D-Link DIR-815 - DHCP disabled, repeats same SSID and password)
Most devices are connected directly into the switch, with one computer hard-plugged into the DIR-815 (I will eventually change this, as the 815 only has 10/100 ports).Basically, I want to easily be able to check how much up/down data is being sent for my internet connection. This means that I cannot use a program on a computer (I've used DL Meter before. Works great, but limited to a single computer).
The Linksys E4200v1 is using standard firmware, but I'm not opposed to loading DD-WRT onto it (was the original plan anyway, just never got around to it), if DD-WRT has this capability.Nice to have feature: Ability to see which devices are consuming what part of the bandwidth. Not necessary, but would be a cool feature.Alternatively, if there is a cheap (like $100 or less deal) box that can interface, say, between the E4200 and the switch, that can do this, that would work as well.

Model : TL-WR841ND
Hardware Version :
Firmware Version : 3.13.27 Build 121101 Rel.38183n
ISP : cosmote
hardware version is WR841N v8.wireless works just fine. i use it for my smartphone and an old laptop. i use ethernet cable to connect to main computer where all is ok until i start using my bit torrent client. as soon as i build up traffic above 1MB the ethernet portion of the router freezes and needs a reboot. when frozen, wireless is still working and i still have access on the lan to the router via my browser. i got this router so i could have wifi for my phone. my old router (asus rx3041) worked just fine and i accessed my isp at the maximum speeds it would allow on a 60 gigabit connection.

Is it possible that if i enable Port SPAN in any of the switchport and send a copy of traffic to any of the windows 2008 server, will i be able to monitor the bandwidth of the servers (Here I am only looking for traffic going from servers to PIX and then to internet, also vice versa).
Also will wireshark be able to differentiate specify the bandwidth of each servers seperately ?

I'm monitoring an WAE 7300 content-engine on our network. I constantly see that the graph hit over 90% on CPU utilization. But when I logged into the box and performed a "show processes CPU", it's showing a pretty low CPU usage. I'm using the HOST-RESOURCES-MIB file OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2 to check CPU load. For other things such as memory usage, status of intefaces, etc... using that MIB file shows correct information. The one I got from SNMP or the one I saw when I logged into the box?
