Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560 - Monitor Bandwidth Utilized By Servers In Network
Feb 6, 2013
I have 5 linux and 3 Microsoft 2008 Servers, each connected to 2 Cisco 3560 Switches. The 2 Cisco 3560 switches are connected to 2 different Cisco 515e Pix. Is it possible that if i enable Port SPAN in any of the switchport and send a copy of traffic to any of the windows 2008 server, will i be able to monitor the bandwidth of the servers (Here I am only looking for traffic going from servers to PIX and then to internet, also vice versa).
Also will wireshark be able to differentiate specify the bandwidth of each servers seperately ?

I am runing 802.1x and MAB authentication of devices connected to a 3560 switch (in test). When I run 'terminal monitor' I am getting alot of authentication fail-msg. Is it possible to get the switch not to show them? I have to do some debugging on SNMP and DHCP to be able to figure out why I get these msg, but since the switch is blasting out so many auth-msg it is hard to see the debug messages. [code]

I have the requirement to assign an asymmetric bandwith limit to each port on a switch (example: 4Mbps downlink, 1Mbps uplink). I've been searching and found the option to apply policers or srr-queue mechanism to achive this, however this only applies for one direction only as far as I know. Catalyst 2960 familiy is preferred, however if this is not possible, will possibly jump to the 3560X family.

I use WS-C3560G-24TS and try both ios 12.2.50.SE1 and 12.2.46.SE but problem the same. The config as following,
interface GigabitEthernet0/1
no switchport
ip address 1.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
[code].....
but I find the int g0/1 output traffic only can achieve about 500kbps then I try config below,
interface GigabitEthernet0/1
no switchport
[code]....
I find int g0/1 output traffic only can achieve about 5Mbps,but if I change "srr-queue bandwidth limit xx" command xx to 20-90,the int g0/1 can achieve normal traffic bps, for example,
interface GigabitEthernet0/1
no switchport
[code]...
the int g0/1 output can achieve 2Mbps that is correct, just only when limit set to 10%,the traffic only can achieve half of limit bandwidth.

I'm intending to purchase a switch for work, and I need to limit the bandwidth of one of the ports to 25 Mbit upload and 25 Mbit download (we have 100/100 Mbit connection and the customer is only paying for 25). I been trying to find information on how this could be "properly" done and what kind of switch I need to buy. As far as I have understood, most L2+ switches support outbound rate limiting, but not inbound, and as I only want the customer to have 25 mbit up and down, I need both.
I been looking at a Cisco Catalyst 3560 switch, and I'm first and foremost wondering if I can limit the inbound AND outbound bandwidth on this switch? Perhaps it can even be done on a simpler, cheaper, switch - as I rather not spend more money then necessary?
Lastly, how to do it, limit the inbound and outbound bandwidth on a single port (perhaps on the above mentioned switch, if possible), to 25 Mbit?

I start configuring Cisco 2821 router for multicast . First short description and attached sheme explanation. Let we say I have small network with 100 users. One router and Cisco switch 3560. Two VLAN’s, one for data another for multicast. Data from internet works fine but now I want to connect multicast servers (or source of more multicast streams) from another subnet. Router have three interfaces.I expect there should be no problems with multicast configuration, but unfortunately it is not like I expect. What I did ?

We have a server connected to a 3560 switch which in turn connects to 6500s. The gateway interface is on the 6500. We will be changing the 6500s so the mac address for the gateway will change, however the IP address will remain the same. As we change out the 6500s the uplink connections to the 3560 will go down. This will flush the old mac address from the 3560.When the 3560 removes a MAC address does it update servers so they have to relearn the correct MAC address?

configuring a switch or a router to limit the bandwidth for a specific user/IP when need it. Most of my remote offices are configured like this:
Users ------ 3560 switch ------- 2801 router -------- T1 to NOC -------- 7204 router with channelized DS3
I use Netflow Analyzer for high bandwidth usage alerts and can see the user's IP right away when someone is clogging our T1s. My goal is to be able to temporarily limit the bandwidth of the user taking over the T1. Whatever is best switch config or on the router.

I'm wondering if there is an easy way to monitor how much bandwidth is being consumed at any given moment for a home network.specifically, for the incoming/outgoing internet connection. My network is as thus:
DSL Modem -> Wifi Router (Linksys E4200v1 - PPPoE enabled here) -> Gigabit switch -> 2nd Wifi router (D-Link DIR-815 - DHCP disabled, repeats same SSID and password)
Most devices are connected directly into the switch, with one computer hard-plugged into the DIR-815 (I will eventually change this, as the 815 only has 10/100 ports).Basically, I want to easily be able to check how much up/down data is being sent for my internet connection. This means that I cannot use a program on a computer (I've used DL Meter before. Works great, but limited to a single computer).
The Linksys E4200v1 is using standard firmware, but I'm not opposed to loading DD-WRT onto it (was the original plan anyway, just never got around to it), if DD-WRT has this capability.Nice to have feature: Ability to see which devices are consuming what part of the bandwidth. Not necessary, but would be a cool feature.Alternatively, if there is a cheap (like $100 or less deal) box that can interface, say, between the E4200 and the switch, that can do this, that would work as well.

Looking for input/thoughts on the upgrade of our 3560's and 3750's while on production network.
While we could remotely send the IOS over the network to the device, I'm concerned about errors and the lack of physical control of the device. So, the thought is to just go to the comm closet, plug in with laptop to the console port, and upgrade the IOS over the console port. But this would require xmodem, correct? I know the fastest way would be to a. configure an empty fa0/0 port to no switchport, add an IP address, and use tftp. BUT, we would have to isolate the switch from the production network while connected to it with our laptop. Otherwise, our laptop would be seen on the network as an unknown device, and there would be repercussions...
So, we console into the device, and u/l the IOS that way. Is there a way to increase the baud rate on the switch to 115200, change putty to 115200, then do the x modem? I just say we should shut all the ports to isolate the switch from the network, then tftp the IOS to the switch. Unplug, reopen the ports, then reboot the switch.

I made 4 subnets in a test environment with some access-lists, nothing fancy yet. How can I use FF TMG for bandwidth management, where should I put it? For those 4 subnets the def. gw. is, normally, the 2921 router. TMG is splitting traffic by client IP.

Our network feels slow and trying to find the best way to investigate this properly. We have Cisco chassis 4500 with mix of 3560/2950 Edge switches 1GB backbones and WLC/WCS in place. The network is broken into multiple V LANS and IOS on our switches haven't been updated in 3-4 years.
On a wireless laptop (G) with get throughput of 1-2MB/s transfer speed with usually 10 clients per AP and LAN we get anywhere between 7-15 MB/s transfer. Using wire shark on a wireless laptop we see a lot broadcast traffic from other clients and the same for LAN. What is the best way to troubleshoot performance issues on the network and where do I start?

access-list 101 Permit 21 1.1.1.1 0.0.0.0 any
access-list 101 Deny 21 any any
and have applied it to my truck VPN that goes up to my firewall
int Vlanxxx
ip access-group 101 out
But when i test ftp is still allowed by all servers.

I show up at this business. They have about 40-50 systems. They have a 2003 AD server with a router, and 4 switches. There is also a dvr system on the network for cameras. Each switch is daisy chained together. Everything is working correctly except for the fact that the network drops about 5 times a day. Before they called us, they would just unhook one switch and plug it back in and it would work. At first, we took that switch and exchanged it with another switch in a computer lab to see if just the computer lab goes down. If it did, then that switch was bad. That wasn't the case, the whole network still went down. We had already left, but when we go back, our first choice will to see if there is a loop anywhere within the switch that will flood the network. Then, we were going to see if there was a switch that was getting a lot of traffic on the network to try to track it down. How can u monitor the bandwidth on the switches? They are 24 port switches. The switch is fs750/24 switch.

I came across some free bandwidth monitoring software by Solarwinds while doing some reading on other sites. I installed the software and now im stuck at setup. The Softaware is asking for...
Ip Address/Hostname
SNMP Version
Community string
I'm assuming the IP Address/Hostname would be my computers IPv4 on the network and as far as the SNMP Version goes im not sure, I can either choose from SNMP v1/2c or v3. For the community string, I'm assuming its Public but im not completely sure. When I attempt to go to the next step is says the credentials test failed So obviously something I entered is incorrect.
Note: this is on my own home network. Im using a Comcast all in one router and modem.

Recently i am running out of bandwidth, and what i am looking for is a freeware that i can install in one of the computers that could tell me which IP or MAC address used how much internet.I have read several articles: some articles point me to softwares which only monitor the computer that they are installed. Other posts argued that such thing can only be done through the main router. I know my router doesn't have such feature. I use SMC router.

So lately this week, one rogue user from the boarding house has been downloading(possibly torrenting)/streaming to his/her heart's content resulting in extremely slow connections for everyone else. I've been using an Android app to list all devices connected to the network, and one-by-one, manually disconnected each one to find the problematic, bandwidth-hogging IP. I've found that said user continued to use up bandwidth even up to the wee hours of the morning.
I managed to find his/her IP address, I know I could just block sites/ports via the router's control panel but I guess it's not that simple because: a.) Whoever setup the wireless on our floor forgot the username/password combo(not even the landlady knows) b.) I've asked management about asking for access to the router. Being the IT student on the floor, I guess I'll take the responsibility of at least limiting the rogue user's bandwidth so everyone else on our floor has a fair share.
So my question is: is there a way to limit an IP/application's bandwidth usage via a non-router control panel method, without having to do a hard reset on the router? I have tried in vain to use the Android app I used, but all it takes is a router reboot to disable it (said user knows how to reset the router). It's been days since we've had a stable connection for legitimate schoolwork usage because of this one IP that's using up all the resources.
The router on our floor is a Linksys WRT54G2 and my operating system is Windows 7 64-bit.

I matched the traffic statistics on one of my Cisco ASA site-site tunnels with the OID:1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.171.1.4.3.1.1.25.4142 (cipSecTunHistInOctets). I was real proud of myself for a few days until I checked the history and found the OID wasnt working. After some troubleshooting I found that the last four digits (4142 in this case) change whenever the tunnel drops and re-establishes itself. Any way to collect tunnel utilization history on an ASA with SNMP? Is there a different OID I can use thats based on the endpoint IP?
