Way To Split An Ethernet Connection
Jun 29, 2011I need to split a connection so I can get internet to two computers.

View 11 RepliesWe inherited a soundbooth configuration Current Configuration:
1. Networked Projector interfaces directly with a PC through a second NIC
2. We can then control the projector through a web interface via the PC and the IP of the projector.
Desired New Configuration:
1. Maintain current configuration - but ADD a second computer (an iMac)
2. I want to split the connection coming from the projector to the 2 computers so that we can interface with the projector from both computers.
I was thinking I would need a switch but didn't know if there is any configuring I would need to do to get it to work.
I've got a router on which I run a backup/media/print server, a couple of computers and a voip box. My router has only four ethernet lan sockets which are thus all occupied by the above, but I need to attach at least one further device b
Secondly, could a splitter such as >> this one << do the job? I'm guessing this basically split a single 4-pair ethernet connection into two 2-pair ethernet connections.
I have only one computer right now.Had two, and got very weak signal to laptop (since discarded) upstairs from Linksys g 54Mbits downstairs at main desktop computer desktop.I have tried three different kinds of 54Mbits wifi routers, all with no success.I'm going to get my wife a new wifi laptop for Christmas, and she wants to be able to use it all over the house. The 54Mbits will cover the downstairs, but, based on previous efforts, I am thinking of putting my modem in the garage, where the cable enters my house, and using a splitter on the cable coming out of the modem to make two IN cables, using one cable for my comp and a 54Mbits router (for downstairs coverage), and putting a second wifi router on the end of the upstairs cable, to cover the upstairs rooms. My house has cable outlets in every room, so I won't have to do any wiring.
I plan to leave the routers on all the time (at this time) subject to how much of a bandwidth drop they cause. I have a 100 Mbps connection, and I play games, so I'd like to retain as much bandwidth as possible. I assume the two "on" wifi routers will pull zero bandwidth as long as the laptop is off. (??)Or maybe I should just try an "n" wifi router, since they get twice the distance, and forget the cable splitter idea.
We have ASA 5520 acting as the VPN Server and Cisco 1941 router as EZVPN client. Since last few days client is not able to establish vpn connection. 1941 router is continuously generating the below log messages

is it possible to configure a Cisco 881 router to split the incoming internet connection between two ASA's? If one ASA fails then the router would switch traffic over to the second ASA. The 2nd ASA would takeover from the primary ASA through the active/standby failover configuration and crossover cable. I'm trying to avoid configuring the switch to control the traffic using VLANS if possible.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently brought an 85mbps Powerline Ethernet Adapter. The basic idea is that you plug it into the wall. connect it via an ethernet cable to the back of your Router and then plug the corresponding adapter into the wall and into your device. It doesn't seem to work. I'm using my iMac and the connection is not working. How to set up the connection as my wireless router is a bit far away to give me a really good connection.

I have a general knowledge of fixing the typical internet connection problem (obtain DNS automatically, repair connection, unplug modem for 20 seconds, etc) but I've never been this stumped before.
Ive been using my Sony Vaio laptop (windows 7) to connect to my uni halls internet connection by ethernet cable (and keysurf login) for months with no problems, now all of a sudden my ethernet cable is not being recognised. its not a problem with my connection or cable as other people's laptops work on it. and its not a problem with my hardware as my laptop works in other people's rooms. its just the combination of my laptop and my connection. My friend did something along the lines of resetting the IP address, but not really sure what he did. So i've done a full recovery of my computer.

View 12 Replies View RelatedMy Windows 7 desktop cannot use the ethernet connection for some reason while it works just fine on my Macbook Pro. When I run ipconfig in CMD I'm seeing a 169 IP address which from my googling of the issue I understand is invalid. When I run network diagnostics to try to fix it the result is that "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration, and that this is now FIXED. My network and sharing center screen even claims I have internet access for a few seconds (instead of a red x between the network and internet icons) before dropping out again.I've been trying all kinds of stuff to try to fix this like ipconfig /release and /renew but this doesn't work because it says an address hasn't been associated with the network endpoint and so no operation can be performed "while it has its media disconnected."

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been having some problems with my Ethernet connection lately. The problem started early last week. I'm currently relocating, so I unplugged my laptop from the Ethernet connection I had at my old place. At two different locales, I have tried to use an Ethernet connection in order to get better speed (the wireless at the first locale was non-existent and at the second it is extremely slow in my room). I have done so with two separate cables that I have tested on others' computers and found that they are perfectly fine. That, of course, leads me to believe that it is my computer and is either a hardware or software problem (here's hoping it's the latter).Anyway, my laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1720 (purchased in 2006). About a year ago, I updated to Windows 7 from the pre-installed Vista. Never had any problems (as I said, everything was fine up until about a week ago). The installed card is a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller. Everything under Device Manager indicates that the hardware is working properly and has all of its drivers installed, but nothing is working.I have tried to uninstall and re-install the drivers (albeit by allowing windows to find them automatically), but the result is the exact same.I have checked the port and found that there is no debris or obstructions. My computer hasn't been dropped or mishandled in any way.

You must realize that I live away from the city and only have an iPhone 4 for a hot spot. It connects via WiFi, Bluetooth and USB. I have found USB quicker, but it doesn't seem to work under Windows 8. So I connect via WiFi only.I have a LAN, based on a D-Link DIR-615 router. This router has a WiFi option and has a Buffalo File server attached to the device that we use as a backup/file server and personal 'cloud'. When I am connected via WiFi and I plug in the Ethernet connection, the computer overrides the WiFi and attempts to connect to the Internet via the Ethernet port. It does know that the WiFi is connected as it is displayed on the bottom of the status bar as 'Internet', but choices to ignore or not check. I have gone to the devices and changed the priority to be Wireless on top and Ethernet on the bottom. This is done via the "Network and Sharing Center", "Change Adapter Settings", ALT-F (to get "File, Edit, View, Tools, Advanced and Menu" options), "Advanced" and finally "Advanced" again. Then put them in the priority you wish. Ethernet still overrides this and times out when I attempt to access anything on the Internet. It works the same on my wife's Windows 7 Laptop. It returns to normal if you unplug the Ethernet cable. Since I wish to have other files available, it is a pain in the bottom to have to unplug the Ethernet cable every time you change over to do something else and I usually forget and have to deal with the 'can't connect' message. It might be a simple solution to connect via WiFi to the router then hard wire the computers to the router, but this hasn't been a workable option. The router doesn't seem to be able to handle that type of connection?
I have had my HP laptop for 2.5 years now, originally bought with Vista 64 bit. It now has Windows 7. Up until now, internet access and connectivity have been working fine. But, all of the sudden today, I couldn't get Internet Access despite trying both an ethernet port and a wireless connection (connectivity was working.) I know it's something with the laptop, because my ASUS netbook has no problem accessing the internet. I've tried looking around at some of these tech support sites and haven't really found anything that's worked for me. I've tried using CCleaner to remove any temp files and clean the registry, and resetting internet settings in the command box, but still I get nothing.
View 5 Replies View RelatedFor other three years, me and my brother have both been connected to our router via ethernet cables. On this Tuesday just gone, however, my brother took it upon himself to mess with the router whilst I was out. Apparently, his internet had been down since we'd had a power-cut on the Sunday, (My internet was fine, and always has been and was fully functional after said power-cut), and before then, it'd been going really slow, and sometimes cutting out. Okay, no problem. Now, the the thing is, that morning, I was on my internet, all happy, and when I returned home that evening, my PC wouldn't connect. My PC still refuses to connect, three days on. It's not even picking up that there's something plugged in.the router is actually flashing to say that my PC is plugged in and connected to the router. I know that there is nothing wrong with the modem or what have you, as I linked my laptop up to my PC via a cable earlier today to try and get it online. It's not a virus program problem, either. Like I said, it was working Tuesday morning, nine hours later, I come home, my brother restarted/unplugged the router, and now my PC won't connect. I should also note that he's now had to go wireless via a dongle, and everyone else in the house uses wireless laptops. I can't connect my PC to the internet with a dongle

I've been trying to use my laptop (Lenovo IdeaPad Y580) as a wireless adapter for my Xbox 360 by bridging the LAN/Wireless networks and connecting the Xbox to the laptop via Ethernet. The wireless works fine normally, but when I plug the Ethernet cable into the computer, the laptop automatically disables WiFi and changes to a LAN connection. It doesn't give any options whatsoever to reconnect to wireless, just forces me to use the Ethernet connection. As soon as the cable is removed the wireless connection returns, but for what I'm trying to do to work, I need both LAN and wireless to be working simultaneously, and the wireless providing the Internet connection. I've also tried connecting the laptop to a router via Ethernet and received the same result, so I'm pretty sure it's something on the laptop that's causing it. Is there a way to change this so the laptop can use the wireless connection while plugged into another device via Ethernet?

I have connected the wire given by the ISP to the up link port of the switch & i connected my PC to one port of the switch with another network cable.
