Why Is Internet So Slow With New Router
Apr 7, 2012Why is my internet much faster on my laptops with my new router and much slower on my desktop?

View 1 RepliesI recently set up a router to have wireless internet at my house, and I've been experiencing very slow internet speeds. My internet specs are below:
ISP: Comcast
Plan: BlastPlus, which supposedly gives speeds of up to 40 mbps
Modem: Ubee D3.0
Router: Cisco/Linksys E1200
Before we got the router we used a wired connection which could only have one person connected at a time. That connection was a good speed, though I don't know exactly how fast. It never gave us any trouble. Now that we connected our router, we can't even stream youtube videos or anything. Emails take a long time to open, and navigating web pages in general is very slow.
I have a Netgear Router at home, and both my Laptop and Tablet connect to it via WiFi. Now on both the Laptop and Tablet, Internet has recently become VERY slow. I contacted my ISP and they said everything on their side is fine, so it has to be on my side. What can cause this? I've checked for Malware but the fact that both the tablet and Laptop has slow internet points to the router. I also flushed my DNS on my laptop and booted into safemode with networking, internet still ridiculously slow.Note, both the laptop and tablet travel with me and did connect to other networks sometimes.
View 3 Replies View Relateddecided first of all to connect an old router to the master (but not test) socket together with different cabling & splitter/microfilter - everything starting working almost perfectly (apart from downstream data rate was considerably lower than expected each time I connected - between about 1400 & 1600 Kbps - I have max. 8 Mbps).when I connected back my current router everything continued to be OK (apart from low downstream data rate) - until I would restart the current router and everything went back to very very slow.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've recently bought a 3G, 32MBit/sec (DC-HSPA+) connection with a ZTE MF680 Modem and a Dovado 3GN router. When I connect the modem directly to the computer I get around 20-25MBit/s which is great and acceptable. Problem is when I connect through the router I get max 3Mbit/sec.Connected via ethernet cable or Wireless (n/b+g+n) gives the same low speed results I have used the same APN (bredband.tre.se) in my router as is on the modem I have upgraded to the latest firmwares on the Router (latest firmware 5.0.5-3)I have swaped my modem to another one, to the Huawei E372 (latest firmware 11.203.05.00.00).
I have swaped my Router to another Dovado 3GN and updated to the latest firmware The modem is placed 2meters away from the router to reduce interference I have removed all my anti-virus and firewalls and I believe the router has no firewall and prior to that did a virus check, also with spyware doctor. I changed the SIM card, and got another from the ISP, no luck. The router's support says they recieve full speed (like 20Mbit) with the same hardware and firmware combination The 3G modem is exactly in the same place where I do the speed tests Speedtests done with [URL] and [URL] Pings are quite high in both cases when doing tracerts but while doing the speedtests they are between 45ms and 75ms?I have moved the config to another room, same results I have tried using no security on Wifi and also disabling WiFi. I have tested with 4 differnet computers with totally diffferent configs

I have Comcast 20Mbps internet. When I'm on the Mac partition of my computer, I get 15Mbps download and a ping of less than 10 on speedtest.net. When I'm on my Windows partition, I get a ping of around 250 with a download speed of 1.5Mbps. I read posts where people said disabling their firewall worked, so I disabled mine and it made no difference.

View 2 Replies View RelatedA while ago internet access was slowed right down for an hour or so. I have a phone line that comes into the house and then into gateway (10.0.0.2) then ethernet from that to linksys wifi router (192.168.1.1). So I did the following ping and repeated what you see below a few times to see that these results were broadly consistent, which was the case. One other person is connected to linksys via ethernet cord and they might have been on at the time. Questions are.... are these results consistent with contention caused by other user on the linksys? and why can I ping gateway but not the router? That makes no sense to me! I am not annoyed with the other person if he is hogging the network...I like him. I just wonder whats going on. When the internet works results from pinging are all as one would expect

I have an SMC2804WBR router. It runs slowly and refuses to even load some web sites. If I unplug it for half an hour, it works fine for three or four minutes and then slows right down again. SMC support told me to reset and reconfigure the settings. I tried it twice. It made no difference at all. It works fine for a few minutes after it has been unplugged but then slows right down. I have the cable connection plugged into a PC running Windows 2000 and that is where I have the router plugged in as well. This is not the machine I use on a daily basis. I use a MacBook Pro via wireless. If I purchase a new router that says the operating system can be OS X or at least XP, can I configure it from the MacBook and will it still work with the PC running on Windows 2000? I was thinking of scrapping the SMC and getting a Linksys E1200-CA.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've recently purchased a WRT160N router, and I'm using it in conjunction with a WMP54G wireless PCI card. I've set the router up to my requirements, and can get a stable wireless connection.. but internet speed seems excessively slow. While I'm able to get up to around 4MB/s transferring files over the network, running speed tests, it consecutively shows my download speed to sit around 400KB/s, whereas I'm able to get a steady 1.1MB/s on another desktop that is wired. Disabling the LAN adapter on that computer, and connecting via wireless, brings down the speed that that computer is able to get to around 400KB/s as well. Hence, I don't think it's my wireless cards, but something to do with the router itself.I'm also experiencing lag spike issues in online games, which I can only attribute to the current wireless setup, because I've previously had no issues with it. All relevant ports are forwarded, so that is not an issue. After doing some Googling on the subject, someone had suggested running SpeedGuide's TCP Optimizer, and changing the RWIN - I ran it, and set it to the 'optimal' settings, and after a reboot the wireless seemed fine - I was getting just a tad under what I should (about 950KB/s).. but after a short while, it just went back to 400KB/s. After further investigation, it seems that Vista automatically changes that RWIN value to optimize network traffic.. but I never had this issue with my old wireless gear, so I can only assume that the way Vista is reacting is based on the way the router is interacting with it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased one simply because we needed a wireless router with my roommate using a new laptop. Installation went by without a hitch but when it came to actually using the internet, it was so sluggish that it was impossible to use, on either computer. In fact, I had to disconnect the router and go directly from the modem to even make this post.
I've upgraded the firmware and I thought it was fixed because the internet seemed to be moving at a decent pace (loading pages, speed tests), but then it went back to moving incredibly slow if not timing out altogether. There was a problem with random disconnects but that was something that the firmware upgrade did seem to fix outright.
I came home yesterday and my Internet was really slow. I later found out that it was due to my Linksys E3000 because if I bypass my E3000 and go directly to my cable modem, it work just fine.I tried reconfigure, update firmware, factory reset and none of these has worked.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a E2000 wireless router. After my internet was slow for a few days, I figured out that the router was slowing down my internet.
Here's what happens: When my PC is connected directly to the cable (I am connected to a university network, so no modem), everything is fine and a speed test (url...) shows the speed as 400 Mbps(200 Mbps upload) or more.Once I add the router and connect my PC through the router, the speed test result drops to less than 200 Mbps(100 Mbps for upload). I tried this several times, testing with the same server. At the same time, when I try to open pages, "Sending request"(Chrome) takes for ever! sometimes it stays at "Sending request" for 15 seconds. This happens even google.com, so it's not the Web server.

I have a new 861 router which I have connected to my home broadband cable modem. Got it all working okay and I have access to the Internet but its not as fast as it is if I connect my laptop to the modem.
My Internet is 60mb (was 100 but I downgraded). When I cannot my laptop directly to the cable modem, I get 60mb download speed on speedtest.net If I connect the router's WAN port back to the modem then I roughly get about 40mb, sometimes even 50.
I do not have any IOS firewall configured on the router, just basic ACLs to stop SSH and TELNET from public networks. If I do enable firewall then my Internet connection halves itself. I have read around that this is the case with ios firewalls on these small routers so I've disabled the firewall but I still don't know why I cannot get full Internet speed.
I just bought a Cisco e1200 router... and the wireless connection is way too slow, when navigating through the web, but when using speed test, the connection seems fine, but still it even takes more than usual to open simple pages, lets say Google... i usually watch streams and now that i cannot do... when i connect directly i can do everything as usual...as i have read, i change channels, but still no improvement, i have the latest firmware, on my range there are only 2 more available connections... i even tried disabling/enabling the WMM... We all know that having extremely slow internet must be the real "Mayan apocalypse"
View 2 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago, I noticed that my Internet connection had slowed down to a crawl. I waited a few days hoping it would go away on its own, but it didn't get better. So I asked this question about how to make it faster.
The problem went away after I updated to the latest firmware, so I didn't follow up too carefully. But every few days since then, my Internet has slowed down again. Unlike before, all I have to do to fix it is open the router administration page and press the "Reboot" button. Nothing else seems to work, though I'm sure there are options I haven't tried.
If it makes a difference, my girlfriend and I both transfer large amounts of data fairly routinely for school (videoconferencing, downloading entire recorded lectures).
The router is a Cisco/Linksys WRT160N v3 that's about a year old. Most of the time, it deals with just two standard Windows 7 laptops.
What could be causing these slowdowns, and how can I get rid of them?
I installed dd-wrt on my router, and I seem to be getting higher and more consistent speeds. Perhaps more importantly, my memory use is fairly constant.
When I start-up my computer, it takes over an hour to find my router on my computer (Not on my brother's computer, or the computer upstairs). Once it does, it connect perfectly. This is very annoying because I do not have a lot of time anyway to work/play and when I do, it takes over an hour to find the router.Recently, I have been having HUGE lag spikes, constantly disconnecting from games and skype calls.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy internet speed is usually instant when browsing online or gaming. At the moment it takes me 2 minutes just to load Google. So far I have been able to rule out a few reasons for this slow speed. It's not my ISP (Which is Comcast). My brother and my dad have fast connection and they are hooked up to the same router. (It has always been like that). I think it's not the router or the modem because my family's other computers are doing fine. It's not my wireless link because I jacked my brother's link and installed the software on my computer for it and the slow internet still existed.

I've bought a TL-WD841ND and was using it normally.
After I arrived from a trip, the internet speed by wireless and by cable is only 0,5~0,7 Mbps...
My internet connection is 10 Mbps, and if I plug direct on the modem, there comes the real speed (9,7 Mbps), but connecting by the router, the speed is 1/20 of what should be. Before my travel i was using it normal, and no one has changed any configuration.
So i've updated to the last firmware avaliable on the website. So i've rebooted it and the "configuration" LED keeps flashing...
I would like to know if this led flashing is normal: (here is a video that i've done: [URL] and what could be happening. ps: connecting by cable, the internet speed is also the same (even after the factory settings reset)...
My Cisco E3000 has slowed it's Ethernet speed so slow that it times out when going to Facebook, YouTube or any site that is complex. It worked fine until one day it just gave up. It's connected to DSL Modem with Ethernet To a Apple Mac G5 power PC There are two other older macs connected via Ethernet, same problem. When I took the router out of the chain, and connected G5 directly to modem, normal internet speed. My firmware is up to date. Both wireless bands work great. When I look at Cisco Connect, everything looks normal. factory settings.

One is running at 18Mbps, the other two at 0.4Mbps. the internet setting are the same and the security is the same (WPA2-Personal with AES encryption). Why is it so slow wirelessly?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI set up the e1500 and everything worked well, my download speed over the wifi was something like 50mps, now its down to .3 mps over the wifi. When I'm hardwired to the router the speed goes back up and everything is fine. The only problem is the wifi. Its not the ISP because my roommates aren't having a problem with their wifi at all. I haven't changed anything on my computer except updated some drivers since I set up the router. My network card drivers are up to date and so is the router's drivers. I'm also doing all this about 5 feet away from the router.

I recently purchased an E1200 to replace a broken router. I have had good experiences with this model in the past which is why I bought it. However this has not been so pleasant. For some reason the internet connection over wifi is INCREDIBLY slow. I don't know why. It is fast when connected via ethernet to the router. I changed the MTU on the router to 1400, I set the wireless width to 20MHz and the channel to 11. I set security to WPA2. And yet it is still very very slow. It's not a matter of how many users are on the network; I live in a house with five other people and it's slow regardless of whether everybody's home or nobody is home. It's like this on Macs, PCs, phones and even the Xbox 360. I just did a speed test. Wired was about 14MBps down, wireless was around .7MBps down. I simply cannot comprehend this discrepancy. The old router was very unreliable in terms of connectivity but at least it was always fast. And my laptop is fast at my mom's house where she has an E1200. I use a MacBook Pro from 2009 but like I said, this seems to be affecting everybody in the house regardless of hardware. The modem is a Ubee modem from Comcast. I'd upgrade it to a SURFBoard but my landlord controls all the utilities and I'd rather not have to explain to him how to call Comcast and tell them to register the modem's serial number to the account or whatever.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my router because my last cisco router was having a misdirect issue. Type in facebook and you get an invalid URL and would have to reset the router to get it to work. Now I bought a new Cisco router and am regretting it. The n900 was a pretty penny and now ALL my videos are always buffering. I have several computers connected, but not active. The internet is painfully slow with the new router, but lightning fast with out it.
Currently using my laptop secuirty settings are IPv6/ and 4 SPI Firewall Protection: Enabled WPA2/WPA mixed mode.
I have tried everything: Rebooting, up to date firmware, resetting, What should I do next? Disable some of its advanced features? Cisco is earning a bad rap with me if a router that boasts high internet speeds makes all my videos buffer and load painfully slow. Let alone getting through all the commercials on the internet now.

I currently have a issue with my TP-link WR941N.When I first connected the router I had a good internet speeds of about 70 mbps. My max provided by the ISP is 120Mbps but 70 was acceptable for me. Recently however the connection is terrible. I regularly have a speeds of 6Mbps via the router, When i directly to the modem via kabel I get a speed of 120Mbps. Therefore I ruled out that the connectivity problem is due to my ISP.
