View 6 RepliesI just discovered that my wireless download speeds are 5Mbps, compared to 16Mbps if my laptop is connected directly to the modem or wired through the router. Uploads are 2Mbps either way. I have a WRT54GS v.6 with firmware version v1.52.8 which I updated today, completed by setting factory default through the router webpage after I discovered this discrepancy. The firmware update did not improve the download speed appreciably, if at all.Should the wireless connection be that much slower than the wired connection through the router? If not, what sort of issues could I be having to account for this?
I did just replace my modem when I discovered I was having erratic speedtests and that corrected that problem. That is when I became aware of the wireless issue, so not sure how long that has been the case. I have Charter's 16/2 HSI, living in a sparsely populated area with solid internet service. There is no external nor internal interference on this 2.4Ghz band.
I have a Arris DLS with 12 Mbps Download and when I Connect my laptop directly I get the same speed as 12 Mbps but when I do the speed test with my linksys I get only 5 Mbps. How to upgrade to the new WRT54GL or WRT54GS?

View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months. The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.

If I set it to 10mbps full duplex, download speeds jump to normal (500kbps for most HTTP sources)his happens on just this new computer (wired connection), any other computers on the network (wireless) work just fine
View 8 Replies View RelatedI live in the tampa bay area, I have bright house (BHN) as my service provider, which provides a Road Runner Lightning (40/5) package. I previously used BHN's top tier (20/2) back in July (and prior) with no problems.
After converting to Lightning in August of this year (2010). Of course, BHN (and every other provider) wants to force a modem/router down your throat, so I had them bridge it (in short, turn it into a dummy modem with no routing). I had an SMC branded modem gateway at the time. I work from home 2 days a week (so I can spend more time with my kids during morning, lunch, right after work) and this requires me to use QoS to ensure my VOIP work calls don't get dropped, if the family is watching youtube videos or watching netflex.
My network was as follows SMC Modem >WAN IP>>WAN Port>>D-link DIR-655>>Switch Ports>PC1, PC2, PC3
Everything seemed fine (from a usability stand point) till about 2 weeks ago when my upload speed seemed to grind to halt. Normally I was able to upload about 200-300K per second, and I noticed this dropped to about 45K per second during a drop box upload. First thing I did was power cycle both my modem and router (in the proper/usual order). After they both come up, I start using speed test to find out what my upload speeds were. I was getting about 39Mbps down, but only .56Mbps up still. I factory reset my router.... test, similar speeds. Power cycle all computers (just in case), and then modem/router. Tested, similar speeds. Updated the firmware to the latest. Same issue
Called BHN customer service, they factor reset it, but it wasn't in bridge mode. If I by passed the 655, in factory mode (non bridge mode) upload speeds returned to better than expected states. If I bridged the cable modem, upload speeds seemed to crash.
Had BHN replace the modem, seemed fixed for a day, then issue came back. Had them come back out and replace it again, this time with a Motorolla Surfboard modem... same issue. Fine during factory reset, however after they bridge the modem, upload speeds were fine. Told BHN I would take it from there.. Connected up the DIR-655, and upload speeds crashed again. (.6Mbps). Called D-Link Support, and the Chinese English speaking rep seemed to not be listening to me and tried to have me adjust my MTU as well as Wireless settings. Long story short... the rep was a level 0 id10t and I hope D-link will consider hiring better employees/contractors. So I was all about to give up and replace it with a DD-WRT capable router (which it takes me a lot to want to swap hardware), when I discovered the wan shaping was on. Which I thought to myself... nah... QoS has never messed up before... why would it be the cause. Turned off wan shapping... and voila. Issue seemed to be insta-resolved.
Unsatisfied with that... I decided to dig a lil deeper. I turned on Wan shaping again, but decided to set the settings manually instead of auto detect.
Here are the settings I used... (Advanced Tab>QoS)
Enable Traffic Shaping - Checked
Automatic Uplink Speed - Unchecked
Manual Uplink Speed - 5000
Connection Type: Cable or Other Broadand Network
Enable QoS Engine - Checked Automatic Classification - unchecked (this checked seemed to affect my upload speed by about 5-10% during testing) Dynamic Fragmentation - unchecked (this checked seemed to be the worse enemy for upload speed)
While I know I'm not any network guru (still have to use a subnet calculator for subnetting), I think I did a pretty good job drilling down the issue (once I got passed my service provider replacing modems).
Anyways, I've had overall good luck with D-Link products, even have a 5 port 10/100 switch (all metal) from 1998 that works great. Hopefully, D-Link will just either put more documentation on the web, or hire better employees.
Are the users' download speeds depend on the hosting company's owner's internet speed? Let say if I was running my own server with my internet speed 1mb and LAN 100mbps, are my clients' download speeds restricted to maximum 1mb of any content from my server?

The guy at SKY pointed out that we were maybe not plugged into the main phone port. This was new to me as I assumed all phone lines into a building were evenly matched. I then searched the whole building and found (what I think to be as it has a dividing line like he mentioned on the front plate) the main phone port into the building. Unfortunately its on the very top floor.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI setup a network to run my business three years ago. It consists of 7 computers, an HP Media Smart server, three Netgear GS 605 v 3, where I connect the computers, router and printers. The server is only used as a file server and runs the backups. However, I also put together an Access database which has a front end on each computer and a back end on the server.Reading data from the database on some machines is terribly slow at times, 30 seconds or more for a response, but other times it is almost as quick as you can type.We are a lot busier now so do I need to upgrade hardware or do I have a problem. For example, my machine is just a Vista machine and writes to server at 60Mbps and reads at 21Mbps, two other Windows 7 machines write at 70Mbps but only read at 3Mbps. If I look at the Status of my Local Area Connection Status, its speed is 100.0 Mbps yet the Netgear states 10/100/1000. I have concluded that I need to change the network cards in the computers, but I don't know if I am correct.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAbout 3 or maybe 4 years ago I bought a Dlink DIR-655 wireless router. On the box it listed it as an Xtreme N Gigabit Router, Wireless N (Draft N). I've had two Windows PCs connected to this router by Cat5 with "Intel 82562V-210 10/100 Network Connection" NICs on each set to "Auto detect". The link speed on the NICs show as 100Mbps.Also, I have an MBP and a Windows laptop that connects to this router at times, both with built-in wireless cards.I have Insight Cable and a 20Mbps download and 1.38 upload speeds. This router has worked great for the past years. Since it was getting a little old, I thought I would buy another just like it to have when this one defaults.I ordered a replacement from Amazon. The picture of the router at Amazon was the same as the one I have now. When the router arrived, it was a Dlink DIR-655; however, the router had a different faceplate and larger lights. On the box it listed it as "Xtreme N Gigabit Router". Also listed was N+ 300.
When I set the new DIR-655 up for my LAN and wireless, everything worked OK.However, I noticed the link speed on the NICs had dropped to 10Mbps.I can disable the NIC and then enable, or, unplug and plug in the Cat5 cable, and it will connect at 100Mbps for about 5 seconds and then revert back to 10Mbps.I returned the router to Amazon and purchased another just like it from Office Depot. The same problems are back.I have used the router set-up disk and have done a manual set-up. I cannot get the NICs to connect to the router above 10Mbps.I have turned off wireless, made different settings throughout the router and nothing works.I can set the NICs to 100Mbps full duplex and I get 1.5Mbps download speeds. If I set them to 100 half duplex, I might get 5Mbps.Believe me; I have just about changed every setting on this router with no success. I've turned the firewall, QoS off then on, wireless off and on, put one PC outside the router, but nothing works. Also, firmware is up to date. When I connect my PC direct to Insight modem or connect the original DIR-655, I get 100Mbps on the NIC and 20+Mbps download speed.I cannot get the NICs to connect above 10Mbps on this "new DIR-655" router.
2 pcs connected with a TPlink modem/switch. wired connection. One pc running win7 64, other xp sp3. Both home pcs..Used to get about 10mbs transfer speed. ( I know its low, but was more than happy with it as I never use it to transfer large files. But suddenly transfer speed changed to just 8kbps. Its kind of a speed limit activated.I can just browse files and folders but cannot copy at 8kbps.

I'm now hoping a network pro can provide it here.I have two Gigabit switches connected by a single Cat 5e cable of length 10 metres. My servers are on one switch, and clients on the other. We don't seem to get good speed on the network, so I am investigating various issues in turn as I come across them. The Question is: Would I achieve faster packet throughput between switches by filling the empty RJ-45 sockets with additional Cat 5e cables, or will it have no more effect than the single cable there at the moment?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Verizon DSL. Since I've gotten it turned on in my new apartment it's been randomly DCing, I had a tech come out and tell me it was because I'm too far from the central office(thought I'm only a mile from the office?) and I needed to call and get my mbps reduced from 10, to 5. So, I called and did that and I was still having the same issue. Today another tech came out, told me the same thing, but I needed to be reduced to 3, and left. I called and got it reduced again. They said it should be 3-5 and I was at 5-7. So, now my download speed is actually higher than it was when I was 5-7(it was at 3 mbps usually, now it's 5), but my ping has doubled. Pages are taking longer to load, and when I play any games online there's a noticeable delay. I have been DCing less often, but it's still happening.
View 14 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to monitor network traffic speeds. Our companies network download speeds seem to start high, but then progressively slows to a near stop.Downloading small documents start out fast and finishes, but I noticed that the speed slows down significantly. This poses a problem when downloading larger files and documentsThe speed start out very high, but then slows to near zero and results in the file failing to complete. What i need is to find out what is causing the speed degradation and or where our bottleneck is. Is this a setting issue with the browser, security, etc.

I don't know why the speed dropped so much. We weren't messing around with anything and wasn't using the internet.About 3 hours later after my bro was done using the laptop I disconnected the router and plugged the modem straight into my pc and the speed shot back up to 20Mbps on speedtest.net.
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen wired to the router I consistently get 10meg up and down, so the connection itself is fine. When I use wireless on my laptop, I get around 0.1meg down and 10meg up. The router is fine because I still get 10meg up and down testing on my iPhone, and the laptop is fine because I get 8meg up and down on my friend's wireless network. There must be something specific that's incompatible between my laptop and my router. I've already tried changing the channel, used inSSIDer to pick unoccupied channels (4+8) with no occupied channels either side. Using N-only mode, channel bonding, tried protected mode on and off, QoS on and off.
